Tottenham fans urge club to avoid injury-hit striker Carroll

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a shock £2million swoop to sign West Ham United striker Andy Carroll – as reported by The Sun.

Spurs are currently in the throes of an injury crisis, leaving Fernando Llorente as the club’s only fully fit senior centre-forward.

With Harry Kane out, Llorente started against Fulham on Sunday and scored an own goal in the 2-1 victory, while also missing a gilt-edged chance at the other end.

Dele Alli was injured towards the end of the game with a hamstring injury, as reported by BBC Sport, while Son Heung-Min is currently on international duty with South Korea at the Asian Cup.

The Sun claim that Spurs have turned their attentions to Carroll as they look to bolster their forward line. The deal will rest on whether Manuel Pellegrini feels that he needs the 30-year-old as back-up to Marko Arnautovic.

However, Carroll has struggled immensely for fitness in recent seasons and has scored just once this term, in the FA Cup win over Birmingham City.

Many Tottenham fans have therefore reacted to the news with genuine dismay, urging the club to steer as far away from the injury-prone forward as possible.

Liverpool fans react as Marko Arnautovic is ruled out of tonight’s game

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was confirmed that Marko Arnautovic will miss tonight’s game against them, which has boosted their chances of a win against the Hammers massively, according to Anfield HQ.

The Austrian international forward had to leave the field against Wolves with a foot injury, and the game against Jurgen Klopp’s league leaders has come too soon for the 29-year-old who was close to a move away from the club in January.

The former Stoke man has scored eight goals and recorded two assists so far this season, and would have been a massive threat to a Liverpool backline suffering from the absence of Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold – however, it looks as if Klopp has survived the first scare of the evening.

Fans of the Merseysiders are nervous about the game after Manchester City closed the gap to just two points, but the news regarding Arnautovic should ease their fears somewhat…

Sunderland fans react as Stewart Donald crushes worrying transfer report

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Sunderland fans have been heaping praise on owner Stewart Donald, after the boss quashed a false rumour about loaned out defender Lamine Kone.

After reports claimed Sunderland are still paying Kone an absolutely ludicrous £53,000 per week, Donald was quick to dispel the rumour.

Replying to a fan on his official Twitter account, the Black Cats boss said: “We are contributing nothing to Lamine Kone playing in France. I do not know what Strasbourg are paying him exactly but we are paying nothing at all.”

Kone was part of a mass exodus of first team players last summer, as Donald and Jack Ross tried desperately to thin the wage ball.

The towering Ivory Coast international joined Strasbourg on loan, and Donald confirmed in his tweet that there is an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

After several years of hurt under Ellis Short, fans are loving Donald’s openness and honest, and not for the first time this season.

Arsenal fans react as Ramsey pens four-year Juventus contract

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Arsenal fans have been reacting to a transfer update from David Ornstein, who reports that Aaron Ramsey has signed his pre-contract agreement with Juventus.

According to BBC’s David Ornstein, Ramsey has now officially signed his Juventus contract, and the clubs themselves have now confirmed the deal is in place.

The 28 year-old passed a medical in January, and has now penned a four-year deal that will see him make an eye-watering £400,000 per-week, making him the highest-paid British footballer of all time.

Ramsey has racked up an impressive 62 goals and 64 assists in 361 Arsenal appearances, though one has to think those numbers would be even better if he was able to stay fit consistently.

The 58-cap Welsh international, who has scored 14 times for his country, will join ex-Liverpool man Emre Can, who moved to Turin last summer in the exact same manner, as Juventus continue to prove they are the shrewdest operators in the transfer market.

The Chalkboard: Berardi’s return kills two birds for Bielsa and Leeds

[ad_pod ]

Leeds have won just three of their last nine games in all competitions, but the return of versatile defender Gaetano Berardi could solve several problems at once.

What’s the word?

The Whites had a terrific run through the difficult winter period, but have gone off the boil since Christmas, due mainly to injuries and suspensions.

Liam Cooper’s return coincided with Kalvin Phillips collecting a three-game ban, and Luke Ayling has been in really poor form since returning from his knee injury, as the club just cannot get its best players on the pitch and in form at the same time.

However, Marcelo Bielsa is set for a huge boost this week as Berardi returned to action on Monday, starting in the Under-23’s clash against Bolton.

If you told a Leeds fan last season that their promotion hopes would rest on the shoulders of Berardi they probably would have laughed you out of the room, but his presence in the first team will help Bielsa in more ways than one.

On the chalkboard

When the 30 year-old does return, it could be very bad news for Ayling. Jansson and Cooper will presumably remain the first choice centre back pairing, and Berardi’s versatility means he can slot in on the right side.

Ayling has been looked a step off the pace since returning from injury himself, and some of his play with the ball at his feet has been truly shocking, while he also gave Swansea a pointless penalty last weekend.

While the tough-tackling Berardi’s return may be bad news for Ayling, it is most definitely good news for for players like Phillips and Jamie Shackleton, who can now focus entirely on doing their job in the midfield.

A chance to refresh the midfield

Phillips was forced to fill in at centre back over the winter, but having him back at full pelt in midfield makes all the difference, and with a solid back four behind him the youngster will only get even better.

Shackleton has also been asked to fill in at right-back at times this season, but will now be yet another option for Bielsa to rotate into the midfield if needs must, an area where depth is crucial in such a high-tempo system.

Berardi’s return gives Bielsa an extra option right across the defence, as well as a huge boost to the freshness and quality of a midfield that has run out of gas since the turn of the year.

The feisty 30 year-old is more important to the club now than he has ever been, and fans should be chomping at the bit to get him back in the side.

Crystal Palace fans react after Martin Kelly signs a new contract

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed that Martin Kelly had signed a new contract with the club.

The England international’s new deal will keep him at Selhurst Park until June 2021, and is a big move for Palace as they tie down their third-choice centre-back for the foreseeable future.

Kelly has been with the club since 2014 after arriving from Liverpool, and has made 110 appearances for the south London-based club.

At 28 years of age, Kelly could be forgiven for wanting to leave as he finds game time hard to come by as a result of James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho’s formidable partnership, but he has always displayed model professionalism when called upon by Roy Hodgson.

Kelly has made 10 appearances for the Eagles this season, emerging as somewhat of a fans’ favourite thanks to his excellent attitude and committed performances.

Let’s take a look at how the Palace supporters reacted to the news on Twitter…

Tactical analysis: Chelsea v Tottenham

[ad_pod ]Chelsea defeated Tottenham 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, as Maurizio Sarri’s men bounced back from the disappointment of their Carabao Cup final penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City. The performance was one of fire and brimstone, with the Blues setting up to play at a high tempo, while also looking to limit the chances created by Spurs.A low block was set up which stifled the attack of Mauricio Pochettino’s men, with Harry Kane, still apparently half-fit, forced to drop deeper and deeper in search of the ball.Indeed, per Opta, Spurs did not manage a single shot on target for the first time under Pochettino’s management.

The stat is all the more remarkable when one considers that, at Wembley, Tottenham ran riot, beating Chelsea 3-1 and having nine shots on target. Clearly, Sarri has learned some lessons since then.

Spurs marginally shaded the possession at Stamford Bridge, but their slow, methodical build-up ultimately played into Chelsea’s hands, with the Blues favouring quick bursts in attack.

Due to their sluggishness on the transition, Pochettino’s men could not find a way through Chelsea and failed to create a truly clear-cut chance.

Per WhoScored, Spurs had 546 passes compared to 480 for the home side, while the Blues were forced into 15 blocks and 37 tackles. It is hard to feel that this was not by design.

Pedro, playing on the right flank, embodied this strategy, routinely collecting the ball from deep and sprinting at the Spurs defence, with a similar passage of play resulting in Chelsea’s first goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta took the ball in on the halfway line and surged forward, playing in Pedro, who beat Toby Alderweireld and fired between Hugo Lloris’ legs.

Spurs, of course, did not help themselves. Their performance after going a goal down was one of desperation; Pochettino threw on Fernando Llorente, abandoning his 4-2-3-1 formation in favour of moving two up top. Son Heung-Min was subsequently shunted out wide, and the South Korea international’s influence waned as a result.

Kane, meanwhile, began dropping even deeper, to accommodate the aerial threat posed by the Spaniard.

It didn’t work – Chelsea were well-equipped to deal with an aerial bombardment and did so with aplomb, before Kieran Trippier and Lloris conspired to kill Spurs’ hopes stone dead.

After a long ball forward, there appeared little danger as Trippier looked to play the ball back to his goalkeeper. Lloris, however, had charged out of his area in an attempt to sweep up, and the England international simply passed the ball into the back of his own net.

It is difficult, of course, to account for such monumental stupidity from two seasoned professionals but Pochettino’s tactics from the start failed to take advantage of the tiredness in Chelsea’s legs.

Whereas at Wembley, Spurs were at full throttle and took the Blues by surprise, this was the opposite.

Watching on, few would have been forgiven for thinking it was Spurs who played 120 minutes of football on Saturday; Sarri, ultimately, masked those flaws with clever planning, a low defensive block and explosive phases of attacking play.

Spurs had no answer, and are now surely out of the title race.

Liverpool have to utilise Xherdan Shaqiri’s talents throughout the title race run-in

[ad_pod ]Liverpool have allowed Manchester City back into the title race, having held a seven-point lead over them at one stage, but their fans should be worried about the flat performances on the pitch rather than what the table is saying with nine games still yet to play. The Reds’ campaign so far has been defined by attacking football, spearheaded by the prolific Mohamed Salah but kick-started by the composure and technical ability of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk at the back.In recent weeks, however, which have seen Jurgen Klopp’s men drop points in four of their last six games, something seems off about their style of play. It seems hindered by nerves, static, and far more conservative than we’ve become accustomed to – it’s as if the Merseysiders are more fearful of conceding goals, rather than focused on scoring them. Are fan nerves to blame for Liverpool’s recent form? Pl>ymaker FC’s Tom Skinner discusses in the video below…A key aspect of this has been Klopp’s midfield choices. In Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum, James Milner and Fabinho, the former Borussia Dortmund boss has far too many pragmatic work horses in his side, and little creativity apart from the underused Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri. It is the latter who must be trusted to start from the first whistle in the business end of the season. The Swiss international offers something that no other player in Klopp’s squad does, that ability to spot a killer through ball that even fans in the stand haven’t seen is on, and play it to perfection – for some reason, having featured quite often in the first half of the season, the 27-year-old has played just 210 league minutes since the turn of the year.

You only have to look at the fixture away to Huddersfield earlier in the season, in which a 0-0 draw looked the likely result before the former Bayern Munich man’s driving run and clever ball into Salah to nick a vital 1-0 win – that is what Shaqiri offers. He can be a match-winner, and must be trusted by Klopp.

He is also the only left-footed option in Liverpool’s midfield, and absolutely has to be deployed on the right of a three-man midfield where he can cut in on his stronger foot, pull the strings or go for goal himself with his impressive long-range shooting ability.

Almost every player in red looks scared on a matchday. The flamboyancy is drying up, the creativity is scarce, and Liverpool need to rediscover themselves if they truly want to win a maiden Premier League title for the club – the shackles need to come off, and Shaqiri’s introduction can be the catalyst for such an act.

Chelsea fans take to Twitter to call for more from Antonio Rudiger

In his Chelsea career so far, the Blues have come to love and appreciate Antonio Rudiger as one of their best defenders. The ex-Roma man has a touch of class and his commanding physical presence at the back is always felt, yet the fans felt he could have done a lot better yesterday when Wolves took the lead at Stamford Bridge, and they all let him know it.

The Stamford Bridge faithful have been questioning just a lot of their side at the moment. There have undoubtedly been improvements in the way they’ve been playing since that fateful day where they shipped six to Manchester City, yet the fans were far from pleased with their home display yesterday against Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves where they had to settle for a point.

In truth, the fact that the points were shared was incredibly harsh on the visitors. Wolves took the lead in spectacular counter-attacking fashion midway through the first half when Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez linked up beautifully as the latter opened the scoring, but during the goal, the Blues were all left questioning why Rudiger didn’t take a booking and haul down Jimenez for a tactical foul on the half-way line.

You can read the Blues’ verdict on Rudiger here:

The Blues were far from happy with Rudiger, and their whole defence for that matter, yesterday and will want a stark improvement against Everton next time out.

Aston Villa: Signing Brentford forward Neal Maupay worth the risk for Dean Smith’s side

Reunion’s in football can sometimes lead to spectacular results.

Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea after six years away saw the Blues secure a league and cup double whilst Zinedine Zidane’s arrival at the Estadio Bernabeu as a manager following a successful playing career for Real Madrid recently brought about three consecutive Champions League titles for Los Blancos.

Whilst admittedly not on the same scale as these two examples, it can still be argued that a move by Dean Smith to sign Neal Maupay for the second time in his career could be vital for Aston Villa’s future.

Having previously bought the French forward whilst in charge of Brentford from Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne, the 47-year-old could see him as a permanent solution to the Lions’ attacking issues. A move for Tammy Abraham in the summer may not prove to be very cost-efficient when you consider that Chelsea will undoubtedly be looking at selling to a number of different clubs if they are to let the forward leave, stoking up a possible bidding war.

Although interest in Maupay may also be high due to the fact that he has scored 23 goals and provided eight assists for the Bees this season, it could be more of a realistic option for Villa. The Lions, who are currently sixth in the Championship table, may be able to provide the platform that the former Nice forward needs to fulfill his potential in the future.

At the age of 22, Maupay has all the talent needed to succeed at the highest level yet it is questionable that he can do this by staying at Griffin Park when you consider that Brentford are heading for yet another season where they are stuck in the second tier.

Any move therefore could ultimately come down to whether Smith’s side achieve promotion at the end of the current campaign. With Villa occupying the final play-off position in the Championship, they will be desperate to avenge last year’s loss in the final of the competition in May.

What do you think Villa fans? Should Smith do all that he can to sign Maupay in the summer? Or is there another forward that you like him to buy? Let us know below.
