Thomas Frank says Tottenham owners '120%' committed to achieving 'something special' after rejecting 'unsolicited' bid from Brooklyn Earick

Thomas Frank has shared his belief that Tottenham's owners are "120%" committed to achieving something special at the club after having their resolve tested by an unsolicited bid of £3.3bn. The bid, fronted by former DJ and tech entrepreneur Brooklyn Earick, is the third received by the Lewis family since the departure of Daniel Levy as the club's chairman.

Lewis family has rebuffed three offers

reports the Lewis family, who own and operate Spurs though the investment company ENIC, have also received bids from an Asian consortium of investors and a group fronted by former Newcastle director Amanda Staveley. All three bids have come in the weeks following the departure of Daneil Levy as the club's chairman.

A source close to the Lewis family said: "This unsolicited and unnecessary interest does nothing to change the family's resolve and commitment to do whatever it takes to drive success on the pitch. The club is not for sale."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportFrank shares view on Lewis' family commitment to Tottenham

Speaking ahead of Spurs' Premier League clash with Wolves this weekend, Frank said he believes the club's current owners are fully committed to the project.

He said the Lewis family are: "Very, very invested. 120% committed to the club. They really want to achieve something special," he said. "They want to build, want to add, and I like the phrase, building layers, because you never go straight to the top. You can't jump five steps. That's impossible.

"So building layers is very important. I think that's also more organic and more sustainable over time. But they're very, very focused on what they can do to help the club."

However, Frank did add that he thinks it important for the owners to take a more active role in the leadership of the club. Before Levy's departure, both he and ENIC had been the subject of fan protests. While the club is in a much stronger position financially and commercially, repeated failures on the pitch and a perceived lack of investment into the squad had soured the relationship between the fans and the club. The Lewis' had previously been happy for Levy to front the response, but without him, now is the time for the owners to play a more public role according to Frank.

"If you're an owner or a leader, it's important for people to see you," he said.

Conflicting reports — Are Tottenham for sale?

Earick's group is comprised of 12 entrepreneurs with interests in the NBA and NFL. Further to the reported offer of £3.3bn for control of the club, Earick's group would make £1.2bn available for an overhaul of the club's playing squad. Reports have linked the consortium to meeting with people behind the scenes at Spurs dating back several months. It would appear Levy's departure has prompted Earick's group to again test the resolve of the Lewis family.

A statement by Spurs CEO Vinkai Venkatesham appeared to reiterate the Lewis' stance, despite conflicting reports: "There's been a lot of newspaper articles and a lot of media speculation around a takeover, so I can be really clear on this. So the Lewis family are really clear. They see their involvement in Tottenham Hotspur being long-term and they see their involvement continuing through the generations. We made a statement very late last night and a statement I hope was unambiguously clear that Tottenham Hotspur is not for sale."

Getty Images SportWill speculation affect Frank's Tottenham team?

The vibes around Tottenham have been very good to start the season, as Thomas Frank has led his team to third in the Premier League table, won their first game in their return to the Champions League and progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup. With the current squad currently performing very well under their new manager, the distraction of a potential takeover, or speculation over the club's long-term future, are unwelcome. Frank's side continue their Premier League campaign when they take on Wolves later this evening, before they make the trip to Norway for a Champions League with Bodo/Glimt.

Tottenham sent Randal Kolo Muani warning as "frustrating" claim made

Tottenham Hotspur’s final signing of the summer transfer window, striker Randal Kolo Muani on loan from PSG, is poised to make his imminent Premier League debut against West Ham on Saturday.

The Frenchman’s versatility will be invaluable for Thomas Frank, with Kolo Muani able to play on both the right and left-hand side, though it appears he’ll most likely be used as an alternative to centre-forwards Richarlison and Dominic Solanke.

The latter didn’t play in Spurs’ 1-0 defeat against Bournemouth prior to the international break due to a niggling ankle problem, and while Frank suggested that Solanke could be back this weekend, it is definitely wise to have another option up top considering Richarlison’s fitness issues last season.

Kolo Muani has played the vast majority of his 269 total senior appearances as a striker, and there is reason for supporters to be excited by his arrival.

During his best-ever campaign to date in 2022/2023, the 26-year-old racked up an impressive 23 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt, and this stellar form earned him a £76.4 million move to Ligue 1 heavyweights PSG.

While it hasn’t worked out for him in the French capital, Kolo Muani’s head-turning loan move to Juventus last term, where he managed 10 goals and three assists in 22 outings, showcases a player of serious attacking quality.

On the international stage, Kolo Muani has always maintained the faith of Didier Deschamps, even amidst his PSG exile, with the forward bagging semi-final goals against Morocco at the 2022 World Cup and Spain in Euro 2024.

The former Nantes sensation has also been a long-time target for the Lilywhites. Tottenham attempted to agree a deal for Kolo Muani in January before his switch to Juve, and ex-Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was personally pushing for him in the winter, according to club insider Paul O’Keefe.

Now, the Spurs recruitment team have got their man, but unfortunately for Frank, there is no option to buy Kolo Muani at the end of his loan spell if he manages to pull up trees in north London.

This is seen as quite an ‘un-Spurs like’ condition of the Kolo Muani deal, and pundit John Wenham has fired a warning to Tottenham over agreeing to a straight loan.

Tottenham sent Randal Kolo Muani warning as "frustrating" claim made

Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham says thatTottenham are taking a “risk” by just signing Kolo Muani on a dry temporary deal, calling it a “frustrating” development and explaining that other sides could outbid them next year.

While there is an argument that Tottenham face not being able to hold on to Kolo Muani, the fact he’s arrived at N17 for essentially zero cost for the entire season is still a big boost for Frank.

Spurs need strength in depth if they’re to finish in the top four and contend for major trophies, and Kolo Muani is exactly the calibre of player to help them do this.

'Kylian Mbappe is decisive in every game' – Vinicius Jr & Arda Guler playing 'catch up' as Xabi Alonso hails rare 'pace' of Real Madrid star after big Champions League win

Kylian Mbappe scored a stunning hat-trick as Real Madrid cruised to a 5-0 Champions League win over Kairat Almaty, bouncing back from their derby defeat to Atletico. Xabi Alonso hailed the Frenchman as “decisive in every game” while stressing that Vinicius Jr. and Arda Guler are still “catching up” to his rare pace as Madrid’s new front line begins to click at European level.

Mbappe hat-trick powers Real Madrid to emphatic win

French hero Mbappe delivered a masterclass with a hat-trick as Madrid eased past Champions League debutants Kairat Almaty in a 5-0 away victory. The French forward converted a penalty in the first half before adding two more after the break, a chip over the goalkeeper and a thunderous strike from distance. Rodrygo, Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz also played their part in a dominant team display as Los Blancos bounced back emphatically from their 5-2 La Liga defeat against Atletico Madrid.

After the win, Madrid boss Alonso was full of praise for his star forward, saying: “He’s decisive in practically every game. He’s clinical in front of goal. He also scored a spectacular goal the other day in the derby. We need his quality to flourish. Not just for the goals, but for everything. For his influence. He can have a spectacular season.”

Alonso described Mbappe’s rhythm as “difficult to achieve” and admitted that few players can keep up with his level of impact in Europe.

Vini and Guler told they are ‘catching up’

While Mbappe stole the spotlight, Alonso also addressed the roles of Vinicius and Guler, noting their importance but stressing the difference in levels. "I'm left with Kylian's great form, not just the goals, but many other things he's doing and helping the team with. The team is looking for him, we're progressing. Kylian's pace is hard to match, and comparisons are complicated, but others are gradually catching up, Vini, Arda… It's just that Kylian's pace is very high," the coach said.

He highlighted how Guler’s positioning between the lines unsettled Kairat’s defence and praised his link-up with Mbappe, while downplaying the fuss around Vinicius’s substitution, stating: “Another day, maybe, but today wasn’t a rebound.”

The win leaves Madrid in a commanding position in the Champions League table, with Mbappe already scoring five goals in two European matches. Alonso insisted the Frenchman’s dominance must be complemented by the rest of the attack, as Madrid seek balance after relying heavily on their new talisman. The focus now shifts back to La Liga, where Real will be expected to prove their resilience in the title race following their derby setback, they are going to challenged by Villarreal CF next in Spain. With Vinicius, Guler and Rodrygo putting up a strong show, Alonso believes his side is building the depth needed to compete on all fronts.

BCCI terminates India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar's contract

Nayar is the first major casualty of the review carried out by the BCCI in January to assess India’s poor run in Test cricket late last year

Nagraj Gollapudi17-Apr-2025The BCCI has terminated Abhishek Nayar’s contract, less than a year after appointing him as assistant coach of the India men’s national team.Nayar, who was appointed last July, is the first major casualty of the review carried out by the BCCI to assess India’s miserable run in Test cricket late last year, beginning with the 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand followed by the 3-1 series defeat in Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Soon after India returned from Australia, the BCCI conducted an extensive review meeting in coordination with India head coach Gautam Gambhir. Also present at that initial review meeting, which was held in Mumbai, were India Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.Nayar, a successful allrounder with Mumbai who played three ODIs for India, was handpicked by Gambhir for the job after he was appointed as head coach. While Gambhir was given a three-year contract – until the 2027 ODI World Cup – Nayar’s tenure could not be ascertained.Gambhir and Nayar worked together at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024 and were key to the franchise winning its third IPL title, the first after a decade. While Nayar has never coached in the domestic circuit, he has worked one-on-one with several international and uncapped Indian players, including Rohit, Dinesh Karthik, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer and Angkrish Raghuvanshi.Recently, KL Rahul also credited Nayar for his white-ball success, saying, “Big shoutout to Abhishek Nayar. I’ve worked a lot with him ever since he’s come into the Indian team.”Doubts over Nayar’s future emerged in late January when the BCCI appointed former Saurashtra batter Sitanshu Kotak as the batting coach ahead of the white-ball home series against England. Both Kotak and Nayar, along with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip had also travelled to the Champions Trophy as part of Gambhir’s support staff.ESPNcricinfo has reached out to Nayar as well as Saikia for comments.Adrian Le Roux set to join as trainerAdrian Le Roux, who worked with the India men’s team as a trainer for a year in the early 2000s, is set to join in the same position. It is understood that Le Roux, who is currently with Punjab Kings in the IPL, has accepted the offer the BCCI made recently. Le Roux is set to replace Soham Desai, who has been the strength and conditioning coach for India since 2019.After working as a consultant during India’s tour of South Africa in 2001-02, Le Roux signed a one-year contract as trainer with India, which lasted until the 2003 World Cup. He then declined the one-year extension given by the BCCI, saying it was “a personal decision” to stay back home before he joined the South Africa men’s team as a trainer. Le Roux paired successfully with Andrew Leipus, who was India’s physiotherapist then, and the two made a significant difference to the fitness level of players.

Declan Rice explains how Arsenal & England are benefitting from his new role that's led to him 'enjoying' football

Declan Rice has explained how Arsenal and England are benefitting from his new role that led to him "enjoying" football. The midfielder looked every inch the leader England needed as he wore the captain’s armband in Thursday night’s 3–0 demolition of Wales at Wembley. With Harry Kane sidelined through injury, the 26-year-old Arsenal powerhouse stepped up, dictating play, barking orders, and driving the Three Lions forward with authority and composure.

The Arteta revolution: Rice reborn

Rice’s dominant performance summed up a player who’s rediscovered pure joy in football, something he openly credits to his shifting role at both club and country. At Arsenal, Mikel Arteta’s tactical tweak has unlocked a new dimension in Rice’s game. No longer chained to the anchor role, the Gunners boss has given his midfield engine the license to roam, a blend of grit and grace that has seen him blossom into a complete No.8. That freedom has seen Rice contribute more than ever in the final third.

In just 10 appearances this season, he’s already clocked one goal and three assists; remarkable, considering he’s been missing in the starting line-up for three matches to manage workload and fitness. Concerns briefly flared when Rice limped off against his former side, West Ham, with a back issue after scoring the opener in Arsenal’s 2–0 win last weekend. Fans feared the worst, but Arsenal later confirmed it was precautionary and the England star was fit enough to captain his nation days later.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportArteta & Tuchel give Rice the wings

If Arteta has refined Rice’s craft, Thomas Tuchel has turbocharged it for England. Under the German’s guidance, Rice has been given a similar license to roam, bringing balance and dynamism to the national side’s midfield.

“I can play No6 or No8,” said Rice. “I think now I am more of a box-to-box No8. The manager has adjusted my position at Arsenal a bit this year, given me a bit more freedom to drop deep, but also get in the box when I can. It is the same with Thomas. I think that really suits me on that left side of midfield. Being able to get back, being an all-round action midfielder is what I want to be, and I am just enjoying my football.

“I have got two managers who lay it out really easy with the game plan, what I have to do and where I have to be. Obviously, I am the one that has to go and execute it, but when you have confidence in football, you feel unstoppable at times. “I ended the season really strong last year and probably didn’t start one or two games of this season as good as I wanted, but I have picked up my form now. I feel really strong. I feel fit, really confident in my game, and hopefully the only way is up from here for England and Arsenal.”

Midfield chemistry: Anderson-Rice link blossoms

One of the keys to Rice’s newfound attacking edge has been his partnership with England’s rising star, Elliot Anderson. The Nottingham Forest midfielder, who only made his senior debut for The Three Lions last month, has started three consecutive matches alongside Rice, and their chemistry has been electric.

“I think you probably can’t play at a higher level,” said Rice. “He has taken it in his stride, and he is playing exactly how he does for his club. When you have a lad who is that confident and comes in and feels like they don’t have to do anything different, they go on the pitch, and everything is just like autopilot, the way he plays."

Rice added that Anderson’s presence gives him the green light to venture higher up the pitch.

“We have built up a really strong relationship in midfield," he said. "We have a close relationship there. We are playing closer together, he is letting me go forward a little bit more. We are building a nice little partnership. The manager has really liked us in the last three games, and he has stuck with that. We have just got to keep building on that. Obviously, the World Cup is in the summer, still a long way to go, but the more we can play, keep building momentum, it will be really important.”

Getty Images SportEngland have Latvia next in the schedule

Tuchel’s early impact as England manager cannot be overstated. The German tactician has now won six of his first seven games, a feat only achieved before by Glenn Hoddle and Sven-Göran Eriksson. Under his watch, England are scoring freely and dominating early, with the 3–0 blitz of Wales marking the first time since 1987 that England netted three goals in the opening 20 minutes of a game. From front to back, the team looks rejuvenated, and Rice’s commanding presence at the heart of midfield is central to it all. England sit comfortably top of Group K with five wins from five, and Tuesday’s clash with Latvia offers another chance to tighten their grip on qualification.

Gary Neville's hilarious Liverpool claim in 2023 continues to haunt him

Gary Neville loves making a fool of himself when it comes to Liverpool predictions, and one that he made back in 2023 remains one of his worst.

Neville consistently wrong about Liverpool

Over the past decade or so, Neville has become one of the most prominent pundits in the game, often speaking plenty of sense, as long as it’s not about Liverpool or Manchester United.

Too often, the former right-back allows his heart to rule his head, predicting United to finish in the top four or claiming his club will finish above the Reds in a season, despite arguably providing little substance to back it up.

For example, back in the summer of 2019, Neville said that Mohamed Salah would definitely leave Liverpool the following year – he is still a Reds player in 2025 – and that United would win a Premier League title before their rivals.

“Salah will leave, he will, I can absolutely guarantee it. I can see it, you can feel it, you can smell it, you know it.

“Liverpool, City, Tottenham – all these clubs have had poor recruitment policies over the last 25-30 years at times, so United are going through one at the moment. Eventually they’ll stumble across the right recruitment system, the right recruitment people. We’ll get a great manager – hopefully that’s Ole – and they’ll start to win again.

“That’s going to happen, I can guarantee you as clear as day Manchester United will win again, they’ll win again no problem. They’ll win a league – probably win the league before Liverpool in my opinion, I’m not being disrespectful.”

Neville's shocking Liverpool prediction back in 2023

In 2023, Man Utd visited Liverpool in the better form of the two sides, with Jurgen Klopp’s team struggling for various reasons, not least because the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were shadows of their former selves.

Speaking on Sky Sports before the game, Neville was in cocksure mood, saying he had complete faith in the Red Devils winning at Anfield, barely even entertaining the thought of defeat.

Instead, Liverpool went on to obliterate United 7-0 at Anfield, with Erik ten Hag’s side capitulating in the second half, as the Reds inflicted one of the worst defeats ever on their rivals.

It is a classic Neville moment, and he has produced plenty more in the two years since, featuring alongside Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, with the pair regulars on Sky Sports as pundits. As can be seen, the former Reds defender shared a brilliant image of Neville in the commentary box during the 7-0 win.

'Mason can do more!' – Marseille hero Greenwood given harsh reality check by Roberto De Zerbi after matching Ballon d’Or winner in four-goal showing vs Le Havre

Mason Greenwood has been given a harsh reality check after putting in a four-goal performance for Marseille in their 6-2 mauling of Le Havre. The former Manchester United forward put in a talismanic display for his Ligue 1 employers, but has still been informed that he “can do more” by demanding coach Roberto De Zerbi – who has explained how Greenwood can “become one of the best players in the world”.

Greenwood's goal record: Output for Marseille

The 24-year-old has become an integral part of Marseille’s plans since moving to France in the summer of 2024. He claimed a share of the Ligue 1 Golden Boot alongside Paris Saint-Germain frontman Ousmane Dembele last season – netting 21 times in the French top-flight.

He has found the target on seven occasions through 10 appearances in the current campaign, taking him to 29 efforts in total for Marseille from 46 games. Few arguments can be offered against his output, but De Zerbi still believes that there is more to come.

AdvertisementMatched Ballon d'Or winner: Greenwood versus Le Havre

Greenwood emulated Ballon d’Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin against Le Havre, becoming the first player to net four times in a single league fixture for Marseille since their legendary former France international striker in 1991.

It is being suggested that Greenwood can form part of the global elite if current standards are maintained. When that claim was put to De Zerbi, he told reporters: “It's true that Mason can do more, not just in terms of goals scored because in that area he doesn't need to do better. He's already a top player in front of goal, but he can become one of the best players in the world, because he has the ability.

“He can improve in helping the team when it needs it, when it's necessary. But I want to protect Mason from criticism, he's always scored a lot of goals and never missed a training session. But he still has room for improvement.”

Greenwood told how to join global elite

De Zerbi has previously said of Greenwood’s efforts to unlock full potential, with some tough love being passed in the winger’s direction at times: “All the credit goes to his mother and father. And I'm here to help him become more complete. When he needs a hug, a word of support, I gladly give it. And when I need to push him to give more, I have to do that too because that's my job.

“I would especially like to help him be remembered, in this stadium and by these supporters, as one of the greatest players to have played here at the Velodrome. There have been so many great players here, but I think Greenwood has the qualities to be remembered that way. And I'm trying to help him progress.”

Greenwood has shown that he can match Dembele’s numbers on the goal front, with the PSG superstar savouring a historic Ballon d’Or triumph in 2025. He is considered to boast similar qualities to World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe, who is now a ‘Galactico’ at Real Madrid.

De Zerbi has said of Greenwood rubbing shoulders with the best in the business: “If he wants to become a great player, he must run off the ball. I saw Mbappe, I saw Dembele pressing without the ball, and Greenwood has to do it too. He has worked on pressing, but not always. When he wants to, he does it, and he must understand that this effort is what separates the greats.”

GettyLigue 1 title bid & Jamaica switch: Greenwood's future

Greenwood will be gracing the grandest of stages again on Wednesday when heading to Lisbon for a Champions League clash with Sporting. He has already faced Mbappe and Real at Santiago Bernabeu, while Marseille are now top of the Ligue 1 table – one point clear of dominant title holders PSG.

It remains to be seen what his future holds at international level, with the one-cap England international yet to be drafted into the Jamaica fold by ex-Manchester United boss Steve McClaren despite receiving clearance that allows him to switch allegiance to the Reggae Boyz.

Celtic have their next Matt O'Riley in the making & he's rarely playing

Celtic lost another star player during the summer transfer window when they sold electric forward Nicolas Kuhn to Serie A side Como for a fee of £16.5m.

The German attacker ended the 2024/25 campaign with a return of 21 goals and 15 assists in 51 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish Premiership champions, per Transfermarkt.

Kuhn provided a huge threat at the top end of the pitch down the right flank because he had the quality to cause the opposition problems as both a scorer and a creator of goals, domestically and in Europe.

The Hoops did not sign a natural right winger to replace the German, though, and Hyun-jun Yang and James Forrest have combined for no goals or assists in nine combined appearances in the Premiership this season, per WhoScored.

This suggests that Celtic are struggling on the right wing because they did not go out into the market to sign a like-for-like replacement for the left-footed attacker.

Another player the Hoops have yet to fully replace since they sold him for big money is attacking midfielder Matt O’Riley, who joined Brighton & Hove for a fee of more than £25m last year.

Why Matt O'Riley was so valuable for Celtic

The Scottish giants raked in a club-record fee of £25m from the Premier League side when they decided to cash in on the Denmark international. This was because of the value that he provided on the pitch for the Bhoys in the 2023/24 campaign.

Brendan Rodgers arrived at Parkhead in the summer of 2023 to replace Ange Postecoglou in the dugout in Glasgow, and he was key to O’Riley’s impressive progression on the pitch.

The left-footed midfielder scored three goals and provided 12 assists in the Premiership in the 2022/23 campaign under the Australian head coach, which was an impressive return given his creative output.

Rodgers, though, elevated O’Riley to the next level at Parkhead by freeing him up to take on more responsibility as a goalscorer, putting him further up the pitch to break into the box by joining attacks.

As you can see in the table above, the English-born playmaker scored 15 more goals under Rodgers than he did under Postecoglou in the previous Premiership season.

Per WhoScored, O’Riley led the team in both goals (18) and assists (13) in the Premiership in that season under the Northern Irish head coach, which is why he was so valuable to the squad, as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

These statistics and his importance to Celtic convinced Brighton to splash a fee of more than £25m on him in the summer of 2024, and the Scottish giants are still looking for their next version of the Dane.

Benjamin Nygren has shown flashes of promise in a central midfield role, with three goals and one assist this season, and Arne Engels delivered nine assists in the Premiership and the Champions League combined last season, per Sofascore.

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, Celtic may have their next Matt O’Riley in the making in the form of a player who has been rarely used by Rodgers, so much so that he has played fewer minutes than both Nygren and Engels.

Portugal U21 international Paulo Bernardo has not had too many opportunities to impress in the middle of the park, but has shown potential to develop into an impressive player in the future.

Why Paulo Bernardo could be the next Matt O'Riley for Celtic

Signed on a permanent deal from Benfica in the summer of 2024 after a loan spell in the 2023/24 campaign, the central midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at the start of this season.

Luke McCowan, Callum McGregor, Benjamin Nygren, Arne Engels, and Reo Hatate have all played more minutes than Bernardo in the Premiership, per WhoScored, which shows that the manager rates other players ahead of him in his position at this moment in time.

The Portuguese star has only played 74 minutes in the league. This comes after he started 13 of his 28 outings in the division in the 2024/25 campaign, and showed plenty of signs of real quality at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Bernardo excelled against his positional peers per 90 in a host of key offensive metrics, in both scoring and creating goals.

These statistics suggest that the former Benfica starlet, who was described as “tenacious” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could provide a big threat at the top end of the pitch from midfield as both a scorer and a creator of goals if given the chance to start week-in-week-out and play more minutes for the Hoops.

His assist, for O’Riley in fact, in the clip above illustrates the kind of quality that Bernardo can provide in the opposition’s box when he is free to push forward and join in with attacks to make things happen in the final third.

The Portuguese whiz is a creative and silky attacking midfielder who has the ability to score and create goals at an impressive rate when allowed to express himself on the pitch, but Rodgers has rarely given him an opportunity to do that.

Celtic’s manager elevated O’Riley to the next level by playing him week-in-week-out and pushing him up the pitch to score goals, and Bernardo has the potential to follow in the Dane’s footsteps.

But it is now down to Rodgers to provide the 23-year-old star with more chances from the start to allow him to find some consistency in his performances and his end product on the way to being the club’s next O’Riley.

The 6ft 6ins seamer’s two overs at the start of the Kent innings went for 21, but were not without promise.Bell-Drummond pulled an early six off Matt Taylor as he and Muyeye took the score to 94 off ten overs. They were parted when Gloucestershire skipper Jack Taylor bowled Bell-Drummond with a leg-spinner after the opener had hit six fours and two sixes.Tom Smith’s left arm spin accounted for Muyeye, caught at deep cover having faced 33 balls, and at 109 for 2 in the 13th over, Kent needed to rebuild. Crawley and Denley did so effectively, the former taking 26 off five balls sent down by Charlesworth in the 16th over, including four sixes. When Crawley fell to Smith, having faced just 17 deliveries, Denley went on the attack, launching four sixes and three fours in his 24-ball blitz to take the Spitfires beyond 200.Gloucestershire’s reply had reached 34 in the fifth over when Cameron Bancroft drove a catch to mid-on off Fred Klaassen. It was 37 for two when James Bracey top-edged a delivery from Rogers and skyed to wicketkeeper Billings.Hammond hit three defiant sixes in an innings of 38 off 25 balls, but when he holed out to mid-on off Nathan Gilchrist in the ninth over Gloucestershire were 61 for 3 and well behind the required run-rate. Price did his best to rectify matters, launching four sixes in an over from leg spinner Matt Parkinson.Jack Taylor brought the hundred up by smashing Grant Stewart over wide long-on and followed up with another maximum in the same over, narrowly avoiding falling to a boundary catch. He and Price had added 56 in just 3.5 overs when Denly broke the stand, Taylor pulling a catch to deep mid-wicket.Price went to a 25-ball half-century with a six off Gilchrist, but drove a catch to mid-off from the next delivery to leave his side 127 for 5 in the 14th over, still requiring 82.Charlesworth and overseas recruit D’Arcy Short both hit sixes off Denly, but Short skied a catch off fellow Aussie Rogers to make it 160 for six and when the gallant Charlesworth was run out off the fourth ball of the final over Gloucestershire’s race was run.
