Dom Sibley grinds out hundred as Warwickshire take the slow road

Northamptonshire manage seven wickets in day as prospect of forcing a result recedes

Dom Sibley posted his second LV= Insurance County Championship century of the campaign as Warwickshire frustrated Northamptonshire’s hopes of pushing for victory at Wantage Road. Sibley’s patient knock of 102 was backed up by a belligerent 77 from 80 balls by Michael Burgess, ensuring the visitors passed the follow-on target and closed on 396 for 8, just 55 behind.Nathan McAndrew struck his maiden Bears half-century, an undefeated 54 prior to stumps, while Northamptonshire seamer Jack White ended the day with figures of 4 for 62. However, it looks unlikely either of the sides – who have registered just one Championship win between them so far this season – can find a way of increasing that tally on day four.Although Ben Sanderson found some early movement when Warwickshire resumed at 71 for 1, the home side soon turned to spin in the form of Simon Kerrigan. That move paid off immediately, with the left-armer’s third ball of the morning tempting Chris Benjamin to drive high into the hands of mid-off.Will Rhodes joined Sibley, who continued to advance at a snail’s pace – the opener’s stay at the crease approaching four hours when he reached his half-century – but the pair gradually began to open up, with Rhodes coming down the track to thump Kerrigan over midwicket for the first six of the match. However, Warwickshire were pegged back again by Josh Cobb’s pre-lunch spell of three overs for two runs – plus the wicket of Rhodes for 42, smartly caught by the diving Rob Keogh at mid-on.Northamptonshire persevered with an all-spin attack following the interval, but Sibley dealt with that efficiently as he brought up his 17th first-class hundred, from 260 balls. It was seam – and the new ball – that eventually did the trick when White returned to have Sibley caught behind and then removed Jacob Bethell, with Emilio Gay initially parrying the ball at second slip before recovering to dart forward and scoop it up just above the turf. With Warwickshire retreating into their collective shell again, Matt Lamb survived two close calls to reach 37, squirting White just short of mid-on before edging Tom Taylor through the hands of Ryan Rickelton at first slip.Taylor got his man on the stroke of tea, though, taken behind off the outside edge to leave the Bears six down and still requiring 44 to avoid the follow-on. But any concerns were swiftly dispelled by Burgess, who thumped a trio of boundaries off Kerrigan and confidently swept him to the fence again to reduce the deficit below 150 as he and McAndrew added 88 for the seventh wicket.Burgess looked comfortably on course for a hundred but, having pulled White for four, he attempted to repeat the stroke next ball and top-edged to cover instead.

Rob Key pleased that 'bet' on Brendon McCullum has hit the Test jackpot

Director of cricket vindicated by buy-in from players and public after four Test wins in a row

Rob Key, England men’s director of cricket, admits he has been surprised by the speed with which both the players and the public have bought into Brendon McCullum’s new vision for the Test team, but says he shares McCullum’s dislike of the phrase “Bazball”, because he feels it “devalues” what the team has achieved in the space of four Test wins in a row.Speaking to the media during the second ODI between England and India at Lord’s, Key acknowledged that his appointment of McCullum back in May had been a “bet”, given that McCullum had never previously coached a red-ball team in his life, but he was pleased to have been vindicated by the startling upturn in the team’s fortunes, amid consecutive 270-plus run-chases culminating in an England-record 378 to beat India at Edgbaston.Related

Character becomes destiny as Ben Stokes fires up England's new era

Brendon McCullum's mission to reinvigorate England's Test team has a global remit at its heart

“The way that Test series went was really pleasing,” Key told Sky Sports. “I never thought it would go like that. I loved the fact that it seemed to capture the imagination of the public. That was not part of the plan but [Ben] Stokes and McCullum have somehow managed to do that. They’ve got the best out of so many of these guys, which is what the bet was, really.”But I’m not mad on ‘Bazball’,” he added, echoing McCullum’s sentiments from last week. “It’s not our term, and it devalues a little bit what I think those guys have done. It doesn’t mean you can only play in the Test team if you’re going to be someone who’s going to play a shot a ball. That’s not what it’s about. They’ve soaked up pressure as well.”A truer reflection of McCullum’s and Stokes’ influence, Key said, came in the little details of their man-management during the New Zealand and India Tests.”I was here when we beat New Zealand at Lord’s, and I popped into the dressing room,” Key said. “Joe Root had played that magnificent knock and got us home, but Ben and Brendon made a real point with Alex Lees, who got 20 and at that stage hadn’t secured his place – ‘the way you played there, that set the tone. That’s what we want from you.’ It was the same with Jonny Bairstow, who had played a couple of big shots. And then you see how that has a knock-on effect later on.”Key added that McCullum has also developed a means of reinforcing his message outside of the dressing room. “Brendon will make sure he gets a lift to the ground with one of the players, so he can work with them then and start talking them then, to try and get these players to free up and play their own version of Bazball, if you like. That’s what it’s been about.”You could have someone who was going to be a hard taskmaster, who’s going to be really tough on the players, or someone who was going to try and free them up and get them to be able to express themselves better, to play and reach their full potential,” he added. “That was the bet I had, and that’s what Brendon’s done.”Rob Key: ‘Can you imagine, that packed ground, everyone coming to see you … the only thing you couldn’t have done there was try and block out for a draw’•Lindsey Parnaby/AFP/Getty Images

In terms of the mindset shift that has taken place within the Test team, Key admitted that part of the change had been self-perpetuating – particularly on the pivotal final day of the second Test at Trent Bridge, where the decision to admit the day-five crowd for free (a move subsequently replicated at Headingley and Edgbaston) helped to create an expectation of entertainment.”If you think back to Trent Bridge, the only option was to go for it,” Key said, reflecting on a run-chase that was lit up by Bairstow’s 77-ball hundred. “Can you imagine, that packed ground, everyone coming to see you … the only thing you couldn’t have done there was try and block out for a draw.”It sounds simple to say that now, but that’s what you want to see, it’s just a better game. There’s something in it for everyone. In England, our culture is a bit like, ‘be careful of that, you can’t do this.’ But what [the team] focus on is what you can do.”[People said], ‘you can’t do that against India’, or ‘you can’t do that against Australia’, or if the ball’s spinning … All right. That might be the case. But let’s just live for now, and try and play as well as we can, and deal with what’s in front of us.”The first months of England’s new era haven’t been entirely plain sailing, given the white-ball team’s struggles to play with their usual freedom in the series against India. But Key dismissed the idea that the Test focus had cramped the style of the limited-overs team, particularly with the T20 World Cup looming in Australia in October, adding that the players most affected by the demands across formats – the 90mph-plus quicks such as Jofra Archer and Mark Wood – are currently unavailable anyway.”It’s actually not so complicated, because we’ve got so many injuries to bowlers,” Key said, about balancing priorities across formats. “That problem will come when Jofra Archer’s fit, when Mark Wood’s fit. When you got those really quick guys, sometimes logistically, you can’t actually do it.”

Big upgrade on McNeil: Everton close in on sealing Moyes’ first signing

Fair to say, it’s been an eventful week at Everton.

On Thursday, mere hours before their FA Cup tie at home to Peterborough United, it was announced that Sean Dyche had been sacked, leaving Leighton Baines and club captain Séamus Coleman in caretaker charge, overseeing an unspectacular 2-0 victory.

Remarkably, this is the first time any Premier League club have sacked their manager on the day of a game, prior to kick off, for 30 years.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Then, on Saturday morning, it was confirmed that David Moyes had returned, 13 years after leaving Merseyside for Manchester United, having overseen a whopping 518 matches during his first spell in charge.

With the Toffees currently 16th in the Premier League table, a mere one point clear of the relegation zone, reinforcements are needed, but could the first arrival of the second Moyes-era be imminent?

Everton want to bolster their forward line

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Everton are ‘in talks’ with Olympique Lyonnais over the signing of Ernest Nuamah.

Meanwhile, reports from France on social media claim the deal is only ‘one step away’ with an ‘agreement almost reached between the different parties.’

Numah joined Lyon from Danish Superligaen side Nordsjælland for a reported €30m in 2023, suggesting the Blues are unlikely to get him on the cheap.

However, as noted by Colin Millar, Matt Slater and Matt Woosnam of the Athletic, les Gones have been provisionally relegated from Ligue 1 “following an audit of their finances”, informed they must “satisfactorily improve their financial situation before the end of this season”.

Olympique Lyonnais'ErnestNuamahduring the match

As a result, Nuamah appears set to be sacrificed, although no Everton supporter should consider this a done deal until he has officially put pen to paper.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That’s because, in the summer, Nuamah was reportedly on the verge of joining Fulham, only to “vanish” part-way through his medical, after breaking down in tears, declaring his love for OL and refusing to move to West London, with American owner John Texter subsequently forced to send an apology letter to the Cottagers.

Fair to say, the Toffees will be hoping to avoid similar complications.

How Ernest Nuamah compares to Dwight McNeil

Ghanian commentator George Addo Jnr on Twitter describes his compatriot as “some talent”, with journalist Owuraku Ampofo adding that he is “a fantastic dribbler”.

Wesley Mak of Opta’s The Analyst labels him as “a multi-functional forward” capable of playing anywhere across the front three, comparing him to West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, another Ghanian attacker who began his career at the world-renowned Right to Dream Academy.

Well, considering Everton are the Premier League’s second-lowest scorers this season, ranked rock-bottom for xG, the Blues need all the attacking reinforcement they can get, but how does Nuamah compare to their joint-top scorer Dwight McNeil?

The table outlines that these two wingers are stylistically very different.

McNeil is much more a creator, hence why he’s accumulated significantly more assists and expected assists while, last season, only eight players across Europe’s “top five” leagues put in more crosses than his 229; Dyche-ball at its finest.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

Meanwhile, Nuamah is much more of a dribbler, registering more take-ons and progressive carries, with the Ghanian significantly more of a goal threat, bagging 15 goals during his final campaign at Nordsjælland, on target against such illustrious opponents as Paris Saint-Germain and Eintracht Frankfurt since making to move to Lyon.

Well, considering Everton have scored nil during eight of their last ten Premier League outings, failing to find the net in a whopping 39% of the league games Dyche took charge of, Nuamah will certainly be a welcome addition for all Evertonians.

Tom Westley century sets up Essex for 182-run thrashing of Kent

Captain shares in 184-run stand with Grant Roelofsen before Kent chase of 333 implodes

ECB Reporters Network11-Aug-2022

Tom Westley led the way with a century•Getty Images

Tom Westley steered Essex to their first Royal London Cup win of the season with the sixth one-day century of his career. The Essex captain laid the foundations for a 182-run demolition of Kent in the latest Battle of the Bridge with a third-wicket partnership of 184 in 30 overs with newcomer Grant Roelofsen. Westley contributed 109 from 101 balls, while Roelofsen chipped in with a 79-ball 77, his 14th score above fifty in List A cricket, the others in his native South Africa. However, that Essex were able to set a target of 332 was largely thanks to a late burst of 41 from 22 deliveries by Shane Snater that steadied a ship that at one stage looked in danger of running aground. Kent’s 20-year-old seamer Joey Evison took some stick but finished with career-best figures of 3 for 62.Ben Compton anchored the Kent reply, but without injecting any urgency or pace into his innings of 52 from 82 balls as wickets fell all around him. Snater finally removed Compton to take five wickets in 14 balls and return List A-best figures of 5 for 29.Westley and Roelofsen joined forces after Essex – who elected to bat on a phew-what-a-scorcher sort of afternoon on a flat pitch – lost two wickets in six balls. Feroze Khushi was first to go when he got a leading edge to give Matt Quinn a return catch. Fellow opener Josh Rymell followed lbw to one that rapped his upper thigh.Westley accelerated through his eighties, the handbrake off, with three fours in an over from Nathan Gilchrist that ultimately cost 19 runs. A characteristic flick off his legs for his 13th four took Westley to a 96-ball century.Roelofsen’s anchorman role came to an end after 79 balls with a momentary lapse of concentration when Navdeep Saini sent his middle-stump cartwheeling. Westley followed almost immediately when he scooped Joe Denly to Evison on the fence at long-on.That wicket-taking combination was reversed with Denly taking a spectacular diving catch at mid-on off Evison to account for Aaron Beard. Four balls later Aron Nijjar, like Westley, picked out Evison on the rope to hand Hamid Qadri a wicket. With Essex slipping from 217 for 2 to 250 for 6 in five overs, it needed some agricultural hitting from Snater to push Essex towards a defendable total. Saini lost his composure completely with two balls above waist height to Robin Das that forced him out of the attack in the midst of an over. The second free-hit was smashed for six over square leg.More drama was to come as Quinn contributed a wide of his own to the 10-ball over, which concluded with Das finding Finch on the midwicket boundary to end a 49-run partnership inside four overs with Snater. In response, Kent were never really in the chase. They lost Tawanda Muyeye in the sixth over trying to play Jamie Porter to leg but falling to Das at point. Ollie Robinson attacked from the start, hitting two sixes in his 31 before he flicked Porter to deep extra cover where Snater took a one-handed, rolling catch. Snater’s drop of Denly was not costly as three runs later Khushi took a stunning catch above his head at short cover.Kent’s fourth wicket went when Alex Blake flicked Jamal Richards into Beard’s hands on the square-leg boundary. Harry Finch managed just a dozen from 28 balls before he chipped Snater to mid-on. Evison followed going for a suicidal second run to Snater in the deep and Roelofsen, behind the stumps, completed the run-out.All the time Compton was slowly accumulating, but at no great pace. His fifty took 76 balls – Westley’s had taken 44, Roelofsen 52 – and included just two fours. But as soon as he had raised his bat, he started to run out of partners as Snater claimed three wickets in an over before completing the rout by removing Compton.

Aston Villa plotting deal to hijack Chelsea move for "excellent" £17m ace

Looking to get one over on their Premier League rivals off the pitch, Aston Villa are now reportedly plotting a deal to hijack a move for a key attacking addition this month.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have already been busy this January, welcoming Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund and reportedly closing in on young Levante right-back Andres Garcia. Instantly easing Unai Emery’s concern in their respective areas, those at Villa Park could still welcome more fresh faces as they look to push the Spaniard’s side towards Champions League qualification once again.

Of course, what would have undoubtedly helped that push is their recent 2-2 draw against Arsenal in which Emery’s side came from two goals behind to rescue a dramatic point.

Now, having dealt the Gunners a blow on the pitch in north London, the Midlands reportedly want to leave Chelsea just as frustrated away from the action in west London.

Aston Villa considering move to sign "great" Serie A winner alongside Bade

They could bring him back to the Premier League…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 19, 2025

According to CaughtOffside, Aston Villa are now plotting a deal to hijack Chelsea’s move to sign Yeremay Hernandez this month. The Deportivo La Coruna winger reportedly has a release clause of just €20m (£17m) which the Blues are yet to match, leaving the door ajar for Villa to make their move.

Still just 22 years old, Hernandez would likely find himself on the fringes of Emery’s strongest side, especially following the arrival of Malen, but that’s not to say that he wouldn’t have a place in years to come as those at Villa Park continue to step things up.

"Excellent" Hernandez is one to watch

Whilst Malen’s arrival means that Hernandez may not be a priority for Aston Villa this month, the Deportivo winger remains one to watch. Even having already boosted their options, the last thing that the Villans will want is to allow such a talent to fall into the hands of top-four rivals Chelsea.

Praised for his “excellent vision” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Hernandez looks destined to thrive no matter his next destination.

What his arrival would create is question marks over Leon Bailey’s place at Aston Villa. The former Bundesliga star has struggled to replicate last season’s impressive form in the current campaign and could yet have both Malen and Hernandez gunning for his starting role.

With their sights set on the top four, Aston Villa could round off the January transfer window in impressive fashion by beating Chelsea to Hernandez’s signature.

'It's a big headache', but Pujara expects India to pick Pant ahead of Karthik

Who does the finishing job then? Hardik Pandya is the best option, says the India Test batter

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-20228:40

Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik?

Cheteshwar Pujara called the task of picking one of Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant in the India XI for the Asia Cup game against Pakistan a “big headache”. But, unless both are fielded, one has to miss out, and Pujara picked Pant over Karthik for a spot in the team.”Firstly, it’s a big headache for the team management as both [Pant and Karthik] are doing really well in the T20 format,” Pujara said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out programme ahead of the India vs Pakistan game in Dubai. “The tough call is whether you want someone to bat at No. 5 or you want a finisher who can bat at No. 6 or 7.Related

Suryakumar: Behind square, one step ahead of bowlers

Posers for India: Same old top three? Pant or Karthik?

“So, I would say, if you want someone at No. 5, Rishabh Pant is a better choice. But if you want your batting line-up to have a very good finisher who is likely to play ten or 20 balls and give you 40-50 runs, I think DK [Karthik] is the better option.”With India trying out a number of players over the last few months for one reason or another, both Pant and Karthik have had decent runs in the format. But now Virat Kohli is back, and all of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are around, which has changed the scenario. Those names, however, don’t include a left-hander, another reason Pant might pip Karthik to the post, Pujara reasoned. “Personally, knowing the team management (and) knowing how things work around the Indian team, I would think they might go with Rishabh Pant because he is a left-hander and that gives the team a bit of balance with a left-and-right combination. But how about both figuring in the playing XI? Possibly at the expense of a top-order batter? If the top three of Rohit, Rahul and Kohli is fixed, could Suryakumar make way?The team’s not big enough for both of them, or is it?•PTI

“Suryakumar is one of our top T20 players, so I would definitely want him in the side because he can win you games… he is someone who has done really well for Mumbai Indians [in the IPL],” Pujara said. “Whenever I’ve seen him at No. 4, he has done exceptionally well.”So I don’t think the team management will leave him out. If Rishabh and Karthik both have to play, then I think you have to drop one of the top-order [batters], which is impossible. So I don’t think both can make the XI.”Karthik has been India’s finisher of choice in T20Is this year. He boasts of a strike rate of 171.60 in the death overs in 2022 and has the ability to manufacture shots soon after getting in. If he is dropped, who does that job?”I would prefer Hardik to do that role,” Pujara said. “He is someone who can strike from ball one, and his strike rate is always above 150. I don’t think Rishabh can do that job because he needs a little more time. And if he [Pant] comes in to bat, it should be somewhere around ten or 12 overs. And if he gets eight-ten overs, he can score a 50 or a bit more than that.”The India vs Pakistan game will be played in Dubai, where Pakistan beat India by ten wickets at the T20 World Cup last year – it was Pakistan’s first win over India in any World Cup, ODI or T20I.
