Manchester City star De Bruyne returns to training ahead of Anfield showdown, Liverpool fans react

Kevin De Bruyne is arguably one of Manchester City’s best players but Pep Guardiola’s side have been coping without him.

The midfielder has only played 30 minutes of action so far this season due to a knee injury that he suffered in August.

It was widely expected that De Bruyne would be on the sidelines for around three months, and it seems as though he is on track to return sooner than planned.

On Monday, the Belgium international confirmed on Twitter that he has returned to training with his teammates.

The news has certainly caught the attention of Liverpool supporters given that their team will face Guardiola’s men at Anfield on Sunday.

As mentioned, City have not severely missed De Bruyne due to the quality that they have running through the team.

The club currently sit at the top of the league table following an unbeaten run of six wins and one draw.

Interestingly, Liverpool hold the same record, but they sit second in the standings due to a slightly inferior goal difference.

The form of both of these teams makes Sunday’s encounter all the more important, and the news of De Bruyne’s return to training has certainly got supporters talking.

Simpson flattered by Rangers interest but focused on Bournemouth

[ad_pod ]

Bournemouth youngster Jack Simpson has admitted he is flattered by reported interest from Rangers but is not looking to leave the South Coast, The Bournemouth Echo reports.

What’s the word?

Rangers have improved significantly under the guidance of Steven Gerrard and their fine form this season, accompanied by the major decline of Celtic, has seen hopes of a potential title charge rise in the first few months of the campaign.

Currently just one point ahead of their arch-rivals in what is a fierce battle at the top, Rangers sit five points behind an unbeaten Hearts who they come toe-to-toe with at the start of October – a battle that could play a huge part in how the season pans out.

Gerrard was extremely active in the transfer market during the summer to strengthen his ranks but did not get his hands on all the players he wanted, as Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe blocked a swoop from the Scottish giants for 21-year-old Jack Simpson.

The young defender has since featured for the Cherries in the Carabao Cup, playing 90 minutes in the 3-2 win over Blackburn, and admitted to The Bournemouth Echo that he was flattered by Rangers’ interest but never planned on leaving his current side.

What was said?

“It was nice and I didn’t really expect it if I’m honest. It was a bit strange but it doesn’t really matter now because I’m here and I’m a Bournemouth player.

“I was aware of it but just got on with my training and if it happened, it happened. For me it was just important to make sure I developed as a player and it wasn’t really in my control.

“I am happy to be here and be a part of this squad because it’s not a big squad and there will be opportunities to play.”

Should Gerrard move?

While Simpson has earned his chance in the first-team in the Carabao Cup, the tournament ends in February and league opportunities may be difficult to come by for a youngster who has to compete with the likes of Nathan Ake and Steve Cook.

Therefore, there is every chance that Bournemouth could change their stance in the January transfer window but Gerrard should avoid moving for the youngster as he does not require another young talent in his defence.

Rangers boast the likes of Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson and Joe Worrall as options at the heart of the defence and, if Gerrard is to dip into the market for a central defender in January, then a wiser move would be to pursue a target who can provide more experience.

Aston Villa fans split over report claiming Thierry Henry will be made manager with John Terry his assistant

According to the Daily Mail, Thierry Henry is set to be named as Aston Villa’s new manager with John Terry as his assistant in an incredible double appointment.

Henry is currently Roberto Martinez’s assistant with the Belgium national side, but has made it clear that he wanted the job at Villa Park ever since Steve Bruce was sacked on Wednesday.

Bruce was relieved of his duties following a 3-3 draw with then bottom club Preston North End that meant they had won just one of their previous nine league games. The run extended on Saturday though as the Villans lost 2-1 to Millwall under caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald.

While some fans were concerned by the lack of experience that Henry and Terry have as a pair, many were excited by their potential. Terry spent last season playing at Villa Park, but left the club at the end of his one-year contract as they failed to secure promotion at the final hurdle with a 1-0 loss to Fulham in the playoff final.

Chelsea should look to seal return of former defender to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea’s season continues to go from strength to strength, with the Blues winning once again this weekend.

Smashing four past Burnley is no mean feat, and the Blues will be keen to ensure their form continues into the coming weeks as they look to regain the Premier League title.

While the squad at the Bridge is an excellent one, there does seem to be a gap when Marcos Alonso is missing, and that’s why we think that the club should look to re-sign former defender Ryan Bertrand.

The Saints left back has been as consistent as they come in the last few seasons, and he has deservedly earnt England honours during this time and developed a reputation as one of the top left backs in the country.

However, a move back to his first club might well appeal, and while he might play second fiddle to Alonso, it is a long season, with a chance of winning medals something which might well lure him back.

Manager Mauro Sarri will know where he wants to strengthen, and signing someone like Bertrand would be a superb addition to the Blues squad.

Chelsea fans, what do you think? Would Bertrand be a good signing? Let us know in the comments!

Erik Lamela making himself undroppable despite Alli & Eriksen being on the cusp of return

In his last eight games for Tottenham Hotspur, Erik Lamela has produced five goals and three assists, failing to play a hand in a goal in just one of those appearances.

The Lilywhites have been made to wait a long time for the Argentine to hit his utmost potential in north London, partly because his original heralding in summer 2013 as Gareth Bale’s natural successor was impossible to live up to and partly because of a succession of injury problems, but Mauricio Pochettino is certainly getting full value out of the attacking midfielder right now.

After scoring the winner against Tottenham on Saturday, Lamela has now matched his second-best scoring haul in a single season for the Lilywhites, albeit his strongest to date of eleven in 44 outings still being a little way off, and the controlled header connecting with a Moussa Sissoko cross wasn’t his only moment of brilliance in an otherwise tetchy local derby.

In fact, the 26-year-old’s direct running continued to cause problems for West Ham’s defence with four successful dribbles in total, made all the more impressive by the fact Lamela was dispossessed just once and didn’t suffer a single unsuccessful touch before being subbed off in the 75th minute. He also threatened Lukasz Fabianski’s goal the most too, recording one more shot than Harry Kane.

And that leaves Pochettino with the right kind of problem to have, because amid so much scepticism about Tottenham’s squad depth – especially following a summer in which they failed to make any new signings – the Spurs boss currently faces some big decisions in the middle of the park.

Christian Eriksen made his return from the substitutes bench against the Hammers while Dele Alli is expected to be back in action next weekend – so who exactly should take up the central attacking role in Tottenham’s midfield against Manchester City? Let us know by voting below…

Swansea face tough call over academy products

According to the BBC, Swansea manager Graham Potter has said that he does not feel under any pressure to sell Connor Roberts and Joe Rodon.

That is despite both players’ contracts expiring at the end of the season. This therefore, gives Swansea only one real way in which they can keep hold of their players; earn promotion.

While Potter admitted that he would think about selling the players “if Real Madrid come in and offer £50m”, he still sees both of them as part of his plans.

But Swansea have a very tough decision now. If they sell the players in January, it would give them a cash injection, but it could seriously hamper their chances of doing well in the division. On the other hand, if they kept hold of the players and still didn’t manage to earn promotion, they could well lose the players to Premier League sides for free. Already the 21-year-old Rodon has been linked with Man City, which is an indication of the interest these players are attracting.

The only alternative whereby Swansea keep hold of these sought after players is by earning promotion. If The Swans were back in the Premier League next term, they would surely be able to tie the players down with new contracts. Both have come through Swansea’s academy and would surely not want to leave their boyhood clubs, but equally they would not want their careers to be held back if they could be playing in the division above.

Revealed: Liverpool fans polled unanimous in wanting Fabinho to start vs Cardiff

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool will look to extend their unbeaten start to the season to ten games on Saturday when Cardiff visit Anfield, and every single one of the fans that answered our poll wanted Fabinho to start in midfield after his Champions League display.

The Brazilian defensive midfielder has only started two games for the Reds since his £40m move from Monaco early in the summer as Jurgen Klopp has given him time to adapt to the pace of the Liverpool system.

Against Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday though the 25-year-old was extremely impressive when breaking up play and starting attacks with incisive forward passes. He could even have had a fantastic assist if right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold was able to convert from a long cross-field ball.

Now, all of the fans that answered our poll wanted him to start ahead of club-captain Jordan Henderson in the holding role. Check out the full results below.

Player Zone: The curious case of Fred the Unready

[ad_pod ]

With modern football’s greatest managerial rivalry integrating into the geographical divide that should be at the very top of English football right now, few derbies are laced with as many intricate, overlapping subplots as the Manchester edition.

Whether you focus on the men in the dugouts, the polarised philosophies and styles of both teams, the money spent constructing them or the clubs’ respective business off the pitch, there are so many angles to put under the microscope whenever we enter the week-long countdown to Manchester City vs Manchester United.

Summer signing Fred should have been one of those, and perhaps even the most prominent, ahead of Sunday’s 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium. City were close to acquiring the Brazilian from Shakhtar Donetsk back in January as they continued their search for Fernandinho’s understudy-come-rightful-successor, only to get cold feet and turn their attentions elsewhere. United then picked up the pieces in the summer with a swoop that served as a swipe at their rivals, in a bid to find a potential solution to their own long-term concerns in midfield.

Fred the Red, as he was quickly monikered, was billed as the platform to allow Paul Pogba to fully thrive, in the same way that City had once identified him as the new anchor for Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva to spring attacks from.

But fast forward six months from a £52million transfer that inevitably caught the attention of both sides of Manchester, and rather than Fred being centre stage for the first Manchester Derby of his Premier League career, the 11-cap midfielder couldn’t even get a spot in the chorus. He spent Sunday’s game watching on from the sidelines as one of Jose Mourinho’s unused substitutes, while United put in one of their most apathetic derby displays in recent memory.

This wasn’t an increasingly common Mourinho starting XI snub either; few were surprised or even noticed Fred hadn’t made it onto the pitch at the Etihad Stadium. He’s so far managed starts in just half of United’s Premier League games this season, was hooked off early in four of those and barring a goal in a disappointing 1-1 draw with Wolves has struggled to impress throughout.

Far from a unique midfield talent akin to Fernandinho, capable of quickly breaking up play before distributing the ball with offensive intent, Fred’s looked decisively ordinary if not underwhelmingly clumsy and out of sync with what’s going on around him.

And thus, the case of Fred becomes even more curious, because his performances have been so far removed from his preceding reputation, from the countless snippets of endorsement that previewed his arrival in Manchester, and from what he’d often produced for Shakhtar in the Champions League.

This is the same player who ranked 11th for tackles per match out of all central midfielders in Europe’s top competition last season (to play more than three games) and third for successful dribbles. In one outing against eventual semi-finalists Roma, he was the best player on the pitch by a country mile.

Which in turn makes City’s decision to pull out of a deal for Fred all the more intriguing. Did they simply find a more suitable alternative in summer target Jorginho, who eventually followed Maurizio Sarri to Chelsea instead, or did they see something in the South American that’s now fully materialising at Manchester United?

Adapting has been a problem for him; ironically, and perhaps because he was initially expected to move to the Etihad Stadium instead, recent reports from The Metro have revealed Fernandinho is in fact the 25-year-old’s closest friend in Manchester.

That can’t be an easy situation, especially as Fred suffers from a weak grasp of English and joined United at pretty much the worst possible time. There aren’t too many examples of a new signing excelling in a team that’s falling apart at the seams and the midfielder has inevitably been caught up in the constant turmoil at Old Trafford.

Even during his first pre-season with the Red Devils, Mourinho was busy criticising the club’s transfer policy rather than focusing on the acquisitions Ed Woodward had made, Fred being the most expensive of those, and Sunday’s humbling loss against City epitomised how United’s campaign proper has panned out since then.

United’s struggle for form has only further amplified Fred’s lack of familiarity with his team-mates and English football. Throw in recovery from the World Cup in Russia, and circumstances certainly haven’t been kind to the former Shakhtar star.

But even so, something about Fred just doesn’t feel right. Usually a tough start for a new signing contains traces of potential brilliance and flickers of better times ahead, but none of the characteristics attributed to Fred – his incisive dribbles, his crunching tackles, his driven passes and his all-round capacity to rapidly turn defence into attack – have been particularly evident.

Perhaps Mourinho’s tactics have played a part, perhaps he simply isn’t jelling as well with Pogba as everybody expected, but right now Fred feels far more like the next Kleberson or Anderson than Fernandinho. Fred the Red is more Fred the Dead, or at the very least Fred the Unready for life at United.

Manchester City’s decision to swerve in January now seems like a masterstroke – the idea of Fred clumsily trying to sweep up behind their five-man attack is almost laughable – but do you think the summer signing will eventually come good, or end up being a costly dud for the Red Devils?

HYS: Where should Charlton boss Lee Bowyer strengthen in January?

[ad_pod ]

It has certainly been a turbulent start to the season off the field at Charlton during this campaign. Owner Roland Duchatelet has continued in his attempts to sell the club, without success, and the fans have continued to protest against his cost-cutting measures, which has included refusing to pay employees their promised 10 per cent bonuses.

According to the Evening Standard, the club have been losing £10m a year since the Belgian’s takeover in 2014.

However, on the pitch Lee Bowyer’s men have been going about their business in League 1. The Addicks currently sit in sixth place after 17 games, occupying the final play-off spot that they will be hoping to have secured come the end of the season.

Here at Football FanCast though, we want to know what position on the pitch Bowyer should strengthen if he is given any funds for transfer fees or wages in January. With a lack of depth in the squad, defence should surely be a priority for the 41-year-old boss.

So, Charlton fans, let us know what position you think needs investment in January by voting in the poll below.
