Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti ready to axe five or six Steve Walsh signings

According to The S*n, Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is ready to axe five or even six of former director of football Steve Walsh’s signings for the Toffees in an early ruthless decision, bringing a much-needed end to his era.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Italian has only been in charge for four matches having been named as Marco Silva’s successor last month, but the report says that he has already made his mind up on the futures of a handful of first-team players.

The report says that the 60-year-old has decided that Gylfi Sigurdsson, Theo Walcott, Cenk Tosun, Morgan Schneiderlin and possibly Michael Keane could all go, while Jordan Pickford is another who needs to be wary of his position.

All five players moved to Merseyside when Walsh was in charge of signings until he left in the summer of 2018, and aside from potentially Pickford, it would be hard to argue that any of them have been a real consistent success.

Much-needed end of an era

Everton brought the aforementioned players to Goodison Park in a bid to move to the next level and begin to regularly challenge for the top six or even top four positions in the Premier League, yet when Marco Silva was sacked six weeks ago they were in the relegation zone.

The Toffees spent £45m on Sigurdsson, £30m on Keane, £27m on Tosun, £24m on Schneiderlin and £20m on Walcott in 2017 and the 2018 January transfer window.

That’s £146m of talent, and that doesn’t even include the £30m they spent on Pickford, who could be another man in trouble.

If Ancelotti does axe all of those players, it will be a big step towards ending what was a disappointing era under Walsh in terms of new players brought to the club.

His replacement Marcel Brands has had his ups and downs as well with the likes of Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi so far failing to fire with the former without a goal in his opening 20 appearances, and the latter with two in his 20 outings.

However, he has been successful in bringing the likes of Lucas Digne and Andre Gomes in too, and he may have to take it up another level now Ancelotti is at the helm.

Crystal Palace fans drool over Vicente Guaita’s save against Arsenal

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to drool over Vicente Guaita’s save against Arsenal.

Roy Hodgson’s side managed to grab a 1-1 draw against Mikel Arteta’s men thanks to Jordan Ayew’s equaliser, which saw him become the first Palace player to score home and away against the Gunners in the Premier League.

However, the south Londoners had another man to thank after earning a point – Guaita.

The Spaniard pulled off a wonderful fingertip stop to deny Nicolas Pepe in the 83rd minute, in which he prodded the shot onto the post before springing back into action, smothering the ball to prevent Alexandre Lacazette from tapping in.

It was truly a point-winning moment and a save that the 32-year-old really had no right to make, while also being a particularly brave act as well seeing as Guaita lunged at the feet of Lacazette and could easily have been hurt by his studs.

After the game, Palace now sit on 29 points from 22 Premier League games this season, while Hodgson’s side have the joint-fourth best defence having conceded just 24 goals in those 22 outings – Guaita has been a huge part of that impressive record.

Let’s see how the Palace fans on Twitter reacted to the save…

This fan kicked off the reaction by making the bold claim that the Spaniard is “the most important player at our club” following his monumental effort to keep ten-man Arsenal out in the dying embers of Saturday’s game – that speaks volumes while Wilfried Zaha is also at the club.

Elsewhere, this supporter decided to admire many aspects of the former Getafe man’s intervention.

Aside from the fingertip stop and the bravery that followed, Richard pinpointed James McArthur running back onto the goal line, as well as Gary Cahill’s celebration after the ball remained safely in Guaita’s grasp.

Simon went as far as saying that Guaita’s stop was “one of the best saves I’ve ever seen”, before noting that the glovesman’s highlights reel is just getting better and better – it certainly wasn’t the only stunning stop made by the Palace No.31 this season.

Furthermore, Steve said “wow” after realising that Guaita got a touch to Pepe’s shot, before branding the Spaniard as the “best keeper in the” Premier League – a bold statement to say the least.

Lastly, these two supporters added to the adoration over Guaita and his save.

Steve said that “he has been amazing all season” whereas another fan named Ben simply said that it was an “unbelievable save” – you can’t argue with that.

Sheffield Wednesday fans voice frustrations with Garry Monk

Sheffield Wednesday’s season has been plagued by inconsistency and their results in recent weeks have characterised exactly that, with a heavy defeat against Blackburn undoing the great win at Elland Road last week.Losing 5-0 to Rovers is an unacceptable result against a fairly mediocre team, as evidenced by the fact they have been in mid-table for the majority of the campaign.Worse still, Swansea’s win at home to Wigan means the Owls have slipped out of the playoff positions, and they could struggle to get back into the top-six as their next two opponents – QPR and Millwall – both picked up impressive wins today, beating Leeds and Reading respectively. Are you a Championship expert? How much did each of these big-money signings cost?Fans are understandably frustrated and have rightly aimed criticism at Garry Monk. After all, as the man in charge, he is ultimately culpable for the defeat as it was his tactics and team selection which brought on the defeat.

While the reasons for their criticism are well-founded, supporters should take into consideration the fact that Wednesday played more than an hour with ten men after Massimo Luongo was sent off with the score at 1-0.

Losing a key player in such an important area would likely affect most teams and though the hosts should have reacted better, some fans have overreacted and let their emotions get the better of them.

Looking at the bigger picture and the progress the Owls have made this season – challenging for the playoffs in a way they didn’t last term – means the treatment of Monk is a little uncalled for, with several supporters suggesting he should go.

In other news, there is an interesting development taking place off the pitch which could affect the team’s play-off chances.

Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi brought the fight against Bournemouth

In what was an impressive team performance, Matteo Guendouzi embraced his role as the pantomime villain in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Bournemouth on Monday night.

The floppy-haired Frenchman was given the chance to start in central midfield alongside Granit Xhaka, replacing Lucas Torreira. And in a dominant display from the Gunners – they averaged 60% possession – Guendouzi was the man at the heart of things in that deeper-lying role.

After arriving in the summer of 2018 from French side Lorient, the 20-year-old established himself as a vital part of the Gunners’ first-team, making a total of 48 appearances across all competitions. But having started this campaign with similar importance – he featured in the north London side’s first 14 Premier League games – Guendouzi has had to settle for a more bit-part role as of late.

Since the announcement of Mikel Arteta’s arrival as the club’s head coach, he has been an unused substitute three times in the league, playing just 178 minutes of top-flight football. Torreira and Xhaka has been the preferred midfield axis, but in one superb display against Bournemouth in the FA Cup fourth round, Guendouzi delivered a major statement to his new boss.

As per Sofascore, his total of 88 touches was only behind Sokratis (100) and Xhaka (97) in the Arsenal side, but he was the undeniable driving force in midfield. He completed all five of his attempted dribbles, and at one point, delivered an emphatic nutmeg of Dan Gosling to escape from a tight spot. It was a sign of the level of confidence that seemed to be oozing through the former Lorient man, and to his credit, he also didn’t shy away from the defensive duties.

His game-high total of 14 duels won was more than double that of the man in second – Gosling, who had just six. Add to that, his four tackles, two clearances, one interception and two free-kicks won, and it was clear Guendouzi was the heart and soul of the Gunners.

And having committed a few fouls himself (3), the Frenchman certainly didn’t endear himself to the Cherries crowd, who made their disapproval very clear. His altercation with Gosling by the touchline further added to his villainous reputation, but Arteta and the Arsenal fans will no doubt have appreciated his fire and will to win. He embraced the proverbial ‘dirty’ side of the game, and carried Arsenal into the fifth round of the cup.

He may have lost his place to Torreira in the starting line-up when it comes to the Premier League in recent weeks, but Guendouzi’s tigerish midfield display on Monday has certainly given Arteta a major selection headache.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans have been left swooning over this attacker’s performance against Bournemouth.

Newcastle fans respond to Olivier Giroud claims

Newcastle have been interested in a few strikers as we get closer to transfer deadline day with Emmanuel Adebayor and Paco Alcacer linked.

However, a fresh claim from journalist Lee Ryder has confirmed the Magpies are keeping a close eye on Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud.

He suggests that Steve Bruce considered a loan deal earlier in the window but with the Frenchman yet to find a club this month, a move could be back on the cards.

Giroud has yet to score all season but that hasn’t stopped Newcastle fans from raving over the idea of him arriving at St James’ Park.

Taking to Twitter, multiple fans responded to the claim with one suggesting the 33-year-old would be a cracking signing for the Toon Army.

Despite not finding the net in 2019/20, Giroud has been labelled as the best target man in the world by Eden Hazard so it’s hardly surprising that some sectors at Newcastle rate him highly.

Further supporters were eager for this deal to go through in order to top off an impressive transfer market for Steve Bruce and his men.

Amid talk of a potential takeover, the Magpies have added Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb to their ranks on loan while a temporary move for Danny Rose looks as though it’s set to go through as well.

Signing a striker, therefore, would top things off nicely. Newcastle are in dire need of attacking recruits given Joelinton’s struggles since arriving.

He’s scored just twice after his summer arrival while Yoshinori Muto, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle have no league strikes between them.

Whether or not the World Cup winner arrives in the north-east remains to be seen but it’ll certainly be an eye-catching signing and one to keep a very close eye on as the deadline approaches.

With Lazio also an interested party, it won’t be a straightforward chase.

Man Utd reportedly agree personal terms with Odion Ighalo ahead of potential loan

According to Sky in Italy (via Sky Sports), Manchester United have agreed personal terms with Odion Ighalo ahead of a potential loan move.

What’s the word?

In what has been a frantic deadline day, it appears the Red Devils may finally be edging closer to getting a striker in before the close of play.

Sky in Italy claim the Manchester side have “reached an agreement” with Ighalo on personal terms and salary over a six-month loan from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua, with there being an option to buy.

The report further claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are now in contact with their counterparts to finalise the move, with a medical potentially being held China.

Inching ever closer

Whether Ighalo is the man United wanted all along is certainly up for debate. But as the deadline approaches, beggars cannot be choosers. And in the Red Devils’ case, they simply need to get on with things when it comes to their pursuit of the Nigerian forward.

They need someone in to help ease the burden on Anthony Martial up front, particularly with Marcus Rashford out injured too. So whilst Ighalo may not have been their first-choice (the Manchester side had seen a £20m bid rejected for Bournemouth’s Josh King rejected earlier in the day), he would represent a vital attacking addition nonetheless.

Meanwhile, Simon Stone has delivered a teasing update on Man Utd’s transfer plans.

West Ham owners Gold & Sullivan need to see the light amid Yarmolenko report

According to Football Insider, West Ham United are ready to take a big hit on the transfer fee they paid for winger Andriy Yarmolenko in order to get him off the books this summer, and joint-owners David Gold and David Sullivan absolutely need to see the light as a result.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Football Insider report that an Irons source has told them that the club is willing to listen to offers for the 30-year-old they signed for £18m in the summer of 2018.

The report says that the east London outfit realises that they won’t get anywhere near that fee for a player who turns 31 in October, and who will have two years remaining on his contract come the end of the season.

The Ukraine international has only made 25 appearances in all competitions during his 18 months at the London Stadium, scoring five goals and providing a further two assists.

Penny needs to drop for Gold & Sullivan

How many of these big-name and big-money signings haven’t worked out for West Ham over the years now?

Yarmolenko has ultimately flopped with the Hammers because of his injury issues, while Felipe Anderson has one goal and five assists in 21 appearances in all competitions this term having cost £36m in 2018.

Meanwhile, Sebastien Haller joined the club in a deal that could eventually be worth £45m last summer, and has six goals in 26 outings in total to his name – including just two in his previous 17 Premier League matches.

There has to come a time when Gold & Sullivan look at that scattergun transfer strategy and think about things in a different way – it’s so obvious.

Is life under Gold and Sullivan really that bad? Maybe this quiz will change your minds, West Ham fans…

Perhaps one plan that makes sense in this case is to axe Yarmolenko, but rather than go out and spend on another winger, promote Grady Diangana to the starting XI and give youth a proper chance – it’s not as though their more established players have delivered given they currently lie in the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, wide man Diangana has five goals and six assists in 21 Championship games on loan at West Bromwich Albion in 2019/20.

Former West Ham boss Slaven Bilic clearly likes him given his recent comments, and now it’s time his parent club put their faith in the 21-year-old in the summer – whichever division they find themselves in.

In other West Ham news, this is the dramatic story behind Jarrod Bowen’s deadline-day move to the London Stadium…

Southampton: James Beattie speaks out on Che Adams

Ex-Southampton striker James Beattie has been talking to The Daily Echo about Che Adams.

The 23-year-old arrived at St Mary’s from Birmingham in a deal worth £15m last summer, and went on to start the first bunch of Premier League games this season.

However, after failing to score in those games and with Danny Ings embarking on a hot streak, the Englishman was sidelined and has only made eight Premier League starts so far this term – he only has one assist to show for his efforts in 24 appearances across all competitions this term.

What did he say?

Beattie said: “I know what will happen. He will just bang an absolute worldie in when no one is expecting it.

“As a striker you have to go back to your process and I know he scores goals for fun in training. But he is mentally strong, resilient and hopefully that goal isn’t too far in the future.”

If anyone knows, Beattie does

These words of advice to Adams couldn’t come from a much better source given what Beattie achieved for Southampton.

The ex-England international scored 71 goals for the Saints in 215 appearances, enjoying one phenomenal season in particular at St Mary’s which saw him net 23 Premier League goals in the 2002/03 campaign.

Having also worked with Adams at Birmingham before his big-money summer switch, Beattie knows him on a personal level as well as being someone who has been in the Southampton No.10’s shoes, so if the £15m man is going to listen to anyone about how he can be successful on the south coast, he should be attentive to the 41-year-old’s words.

Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?

Adams has all the ingredients to be successful. He is rapid, strong and can clearly finish having scored 22 Championship goals last season, while there were times early in the season – such as his fierce strike against Sheffield United that smacked the post – which proved that he is only inches away from notching one.

Hopefully, Beattie’s words will help the Saints forward.

Thursday night was a glorious night for Rangers at Ibrox as Steven Gerrard’s troops staged an incredible comeback to win 3-2 against Braga in the Europa League.

Michael Ball delivers verdict as Everton lose narrowly at Arsenal

Everton suffered a 3-2 loss at Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. The Toffees levelled the scores at 2-2 in the final stages of the first period when Richarlison bundled home from close range. However, a header from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shortly after the restart proved enough for the Gunners to pick up an important three points.

It was a very frustrating second half for Everton, though, as they created a number of openings.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side actually managed 17 shots during the 90 minutes, registering five of those on target. Arsenal, on the other hand, only had four shots on target, three of which found the back of the net.

After the match, former Everton defender Michael Ball took to social media to offer his thoughts, and the 40-year-old said that the Merseyside giants just needed “a little bit more quality” in order to win the match.

Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think…

Ball also took a shot at Arsenal, claiming that the London side “aren’t a good team”.
