Leeds: Andy Hinchcliffe says Whites are underperforming because of pressure

Andy Hinchcliffe joined Geoff Shreeves on another instalment of The Debate on Sky Sports and talked about Leeds United’s struggles in the Championship before their recent resurgence in form.

According to Hinchcliffe, the main reason behind their struggles is the constant pressure burdening the team. He believes the club’s past success is what might be weighing them down.

Here’s what he said for The Debate (27/2/2020): “Leeds are under the most pressure in the Championship. They’re not under the pressure West Brom are under. The pressure after what happened last season and we know what the fans at Elland Road are like normally back in the day, but the noise there every time that they play, it’s absolutely relentless.”

Despite results not going in their favour all the time, Leeds have picked themselves up as of late, registering three wins in a row, albeit by slim margins. However, it’s the result that matters and the Whites are once again going in the right direction.

Fulham are only five points behind them in the table while they also trail West Brom by four at the moment. It’s pretty clear that nothing is decided just yet and the battle for promotion will be tight until the end.

Leeds fans, do you agree with Hinchcliffe’s verdict about the team underperforming due to pressure? Let us know in the comments down below!

Rangers fans respond to Alfredo Morelos’ apology message

A whole host of Rangers supporters have taken to social media to respond to a tweet that Alfredo Morelos put out on Tuesday evening.

Morelos was not involved in Saturday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final defeat to Hearts due to disciplinary reasons.

Indeed, having been granted compassionate leave to return to Colombia, the 23-year-old returned late and was therefore dropped for the clash with Hearts.

Morelos posted an apology on Tuesday, insisting that he was sorry for his actions before vowing to show what the Scottish giants mean to him.

Some of the fans were happy to accept the situation and move on.

However, not all of the supporters were so understanding, suggesting that the forward has work to do if he is to win all of the fans around.

Questions are being asked about the South American’s commitment once again.

However, he has been in impressive form on the field this season, scoring 29 times in 43 appearances in all competitions, including 12 in the Scottish Premiership.

Meanwhile, one player could be on his way out of Ibrox in the near future.

Man Utd’s Scott McTominay proves worth after injury return

If you’re a fan of poetic brilliance, then you didn’t have to look any further than Manchester United’s clash with Derby on Thursday night.

Whilst the FA Cup tie at Pride Park certainly had a lot riding on it – there was a plum quarter-final clash against Norwich up for grabs – one of the big talking points was of course Wayne Rooney playing against his former club.

And the United legend came face-to-face with a man who may well be the future of his former side: Scott McTominay. Whilst Rooney no doubt had his moments and was unlucky not to score, it was the latter who dominated the game, and proved why he will prove to be a key performer for both now, and the years to come too.

The Scotland international only returned from his lengthy injury lay-off in the 3-0 win over Watford in late February, and made only his second start since then against Derby. And boy did he show Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side what they’ve been missing.

As per Sofascore, he won ten total duels, made a team-high five tackles, and made the joint-most interceptions with two. Indeed, whilst his defensive work was top-notch, he was equally efficient and influential whilst on the ball too.

His 89 touches were the most of anyone on the pitch, which made his incredibly 98% pass accuracy all the more impressive. He also showed he has a bit of range to his arsenal too, completing all nine of his attempted long balls.

Amidst all the fuss over Paul Pogba, both in terms of his future and potential return from injury, McTominay proved to Solskjaer why he needs to forget about the Frenchman and concentrate on the present. The United academy product’s display was full of power and class, and added a different dimension to the Red Devils in the middle of the park.

Pogba may continue to steal the headlines in the media, but McTominay’s performance should surely ensure Solskjaer spends less time worrying about a player who may be heading for the exit door.

Meanwhile, Wes Brown has exclusively opened up on his time at Manchester United and their situation right now.

Liverpool should consider Sancho’s big-game failures

PSG vs Borussia Dortmund was a bizarre experience.

The Champions League clash was played behind closed doors, the second such game this season following Valencia’s clash with Atalanta on Tuesday evening. That did not stop thousands of fans of the home team gathering outside the stadium, but it was still eerily silent inside the Parc des Princes.

Still, there was a game of football to be played despite the ongoing situation, and it was the French club who prevailed, 2-0. It wasn’t the best game of football, but PSG were the more clinical, scoring twice from eight shots, whilst the German outfit failed to hit the back of the net from 11.

Featuring for Die Schwarzgelben was Liverpool target Jadon Sancho. The 19-year-old has become a key member of Dortmund’s side this year, but although he had some good moments in the match – he completed five of his seven dribbles, for example – it was still far from the best display from the England international.

Few players have been able to match his performances in the Bundesliga this term – he has 14 goals and 16 assists in just 23 matches, a return to be proud of – and it is these displays that have seen him be the subject of such interest from the Reds. However, in the biggest moments, his performances have often left a bit to be desired.

In the Champions League, he failed to score in two games against Inter Milan, and one against Barcelona, managing a goal and an assist in the other two matches. Against PSG, he was even less successful, failing to rack up one of either in those outings.

It was a similar story last year too. He did net against Atletico Madrid – albeit a tap-in – but he was anonymous against Tottenham as BVB lost 4-0 on aggregate. In the Bundesliga against Bayern Munich, as well, he has struggled to make an impact – he failed to bag in either game last year, and he was hauled off after just 36 minutes this time around.

Following the match, Dortmund boss Lucien Favre confirmed it had nothing to do with his fitness, but rather he wasn’t performing well enough.

Whilst there is no doubting he is a promising youngster who has the world at his feet, there is a question mark over his ability to perform in the biggest moments. With a Transfermarkt value of £117m, it would likely cost Liverpool a fortune to find out whether that would change at Anfield. It is certainly something for them to consider moving forward.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp crumbles under the pressure against Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool: Would reported target Denis Zakaria replace Fabinho at Anfield?

Liverpool are in the race to sign Denis Zakaria, Sky Germany reported this week, and the Switzerland international’s performances this season suggest his arrival could have a big impact on Fabinho.

According to Sky Germany (Saturday 14/03, 14:24), the Reds are facing competition from Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid in the race for Zakaria. The same source claim Borussia Monchengladbach value their star midfielder at €50m (£46.2m), which is a similar price to the one Liverpool paid for Fabinho back in 2018 (BBC). So how does Zakaria stack up against the former Monaco man?

Immovable object… Fabinho’s first job is to of course to shield the back four, but since returning from ankle ligament damage the 26 year-old has been a step slow and the amount of players dribbling past him with the ball is definitely a concern. While the two men are completely level for tackles each game, both averaging 2.1 per top-flight match, Fabinho is dribbled past a whopping 1.7 times per game, while Zakaria only gets beat 0.8 times per match. The Swiss star also makes more interceptions, clearances and blocks and commits less fouls, suggesting his positioning and reading of the game may be superior to Anfield’s number two.

Unstoppable force… Driving forward with the ball, Zakaria is also extremely impressive. Standing at 6 foot 2 he is a difficult man to stop once he gets moving, boasting two dribbles per game in the Bundesliga. Fabinho meanwhile beats a player with the ball just 0.4 times per match. The Brazilian also has less goals, assists and shots, suggesting Zakaria is a far greater force in the final third. The Monchengladbach man registers 0.12 expected goals per 90 minutes compared to a measly 0.01 per 90 from Fabinho.

Ability on the ball… The one area Fabinho seems to have the advantage over Zakaria is safety in possession, as the Liverpool ace takes less unsuccessful touches per game and is also dispossessed less. His 2.9 long balls per match also eclipse Zakaria’s 1.5, although it is possible that is merely a by-product of Liverpool’s regular switching out to the full-backs. Both players are hovering in between 85% and 87% for overall pass accuracy, with Zakaria taking a slight edge in that department.

There’s no question Liverpool have looked susceptible through the middle in recent games, with Fabinho receiving heavy criticism for poor displays against Chelsea, Shrewsbury and Bournemouth. And while Zakaria may take a few more risks, the 23 year-old is absolutely a rising star in his position, with his tenacity in the tackle and driving runs forward proving a unique combination that offers a combative presence at both ends of the pitch. Boasting superior numbers in almost every defensive statistic while also offering more going forward, a potential summer move for the Swiss star could well signal the end of Fabinho’s time as a regular starter at Liverpool.

Moussa Dembele has continued to soar since Celtic exit

Even with the departure of Brendan Rodgers last year, Celtic have been able to continue their domination of Scottish football.

Neil Lennon took over from the now Leicester City boss, and guided them to the treble treble in the process. They top the Scottish Premiership this term once again, whilst they have already secured the League Cup and are still in the Scottish Cup. On top of that, they made it out of the group stages in the Europa League, as well.

All of that has been possible without Moussa Dembele as well.

The Frenchman was fantastic for the Bhoys during his time there, but now appears for Lyon in Ligue 1.

Let’s have a look at how he is getting on…

Time at Celtic

The former France U21 international actually started out at PSG, but he made the move to Fulham in 2012 for £324k as per Transfermarkt. For the Cottagers, he would go on to make 64 appearances, but it was during the 2015/16 season when he caught the eye, scoring 15 times in 43 Championship matches.

Despite his stunning form that term, Celtic and Rodgers managed to sign him on a free transfer.

It would prove to be an inspired capture. He was lethal during the two full campaigns he spent at the club, scoring 51 goals in 94 matches. That would see him win the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup three times apiece, whilst the League Cup was also won twice.

Chelsea had been said to be interested, but in the end, Dembele would return to his homeland – Lyon parted with £19.8m to take him back to France.

Where is he now?

From there, he has really kicked on. His first campaign saw him score 20 goals in 46 matches, including 15 in 33 in Ligue 1 as Les Gones qualified for the Champions League. This term, he has performed even better, scoring 22 times in 42 matches – although he has failed to hit the back of the net in European competition so far.

He also added to his France U21 tally, which ended with 13 strikes in 25 matches, whilst the interest in his services from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs has returned.

The Blues have again been linked with a move, as have Manchester United – they are said to be the 23-year-old’s dream club.

Jean-Michel Aulas is unlikely to let him go easily – he is said to have demanded €100m (£91.6m) for his services – but it seems unlikely that his journey will end at Lyon.

Celtic fans should be happy to have been able to watch a future star begin to blossom at their club.

Crystal Palace fans react to Alexander Sorloth’s honest comments

Loads of Crystal Palace fans have reacted on Twitter after fan account CPFC News HQ relayed some eye-catching comments made by striker Alexander Sorloth.

The centre-forward appeared on Norwegian media outlet TV2’s Premier League podcast this week, and issued some very honest comments on his time at Selhurst Park prior to his loan exit to Trabzonspor.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The 24-year-old said that he felt unlucky to have a goal ruled out against Chelsea in one of his first matches that could have helped him cement a spot in the starting XI, before he then suffered an injury which further hampered his chances.

He went on to say that it wasn’t fair to be judged on a few late substitute appearances, which is certainly some refreshing honesty from the Norway international.

Of course, Sorloth has gone on to be a big hit in Turkey after scoring just once in 20 games for Palace, netting 25 times in 39 outings for Trabzonspor to date.

Eagles supporters have been quick to comment on their striker’s comments on Twitter, as you can see below.

More than one individual said they felt sorry form him – it’s difficult not to.

Spurs target Alejandro Grimaldo could transform the team

According to Record, Tottenham are unwilling to meet Benfica’s asking price for Alejandro Grimaldo.

What’s the word?

With Danny Rose currently out on loan at fellow Premier League side Newcastle and his long-term future at Spurs up in the air, it is unsurprising to hear the north London side seemingly being in the market for a new left-back.

But whilst Portuguese publication Record confirm Spurs’ interest in Grimaldo, they claim that both Jose Mourinho’s team and Italian giants Napoli are unwilling to meet Benfica’s demands.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report suggests Benfica are asking for around £35m (£30m) to let the Spanish defender go, and that with him still having three years left on his existing deal, they are under no pressure to cash in on him on the cheap.

Biting the bullet

Spending big-money on a full-back doesn’t naturally come across as the best use of resources, but for Spurs, getting Grimaldo in this summer could be absolutely pivotal to ensuring Mourinho has a defence that he can rely on both going forward and back.

The Spaniard has been in imperious form in domestic football with Benfica, registering an impressive six assists in just 24 games in Liga NOS. And when you look at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to see why he’s been so influential for the Portuguese side in an attacking sense.

As per Whoscored, he averages 1.2 shots, 2.2 key passes, 1.5 dribbles and 1.8 crosses per game in the league – startling numbers for someone who is just a left-back. In fact, his arrival could elevate Harry Kane’s game to another level.

The Spurs talisman can become more of a penalty box predator rather than feeling compelled to come deeper to collect the ball and help out his team with the build-up phase. Grimaldo can provide the north Londoners with another attacking outlet, and having someone like Kane on the end of his crosses and surging runs forward could result in the England international plundering even more goals than he already does.

So not only would Spurs improve their back-line, but they could also simultaneously sharpen their offensive game too. It’s exactly why Daniel Levy must reconsider his side’s stance of not being willing to meet Benfica’s asking price for Grimaldo.

Amidst all the recent links to a player like Philippe Coutinho – a play-maker in a position Spurs have plenty of options for – Grimaldo should be the man Spurs focus on this summer.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans reminisce about this former star’s time in north London.

Newcastle United: Fans slam Professor Simon Chadwick’s Saudi takeover revelation

Lots of Newcastle United fans have slammed Professor Simon Chadwick’s revelation that a takeover of French club Olympique de Marseille is being pondered by Saudi Arabia.

This follows rumours that it is a Saudi prince’s will to buy Marseille which would supposedly raise less controversy than the buyout of the Tyneside club.

Members of the Toon faithful would perhaps be relieved that it is not Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), the Saudi crown prince looking to take over at St. James’ Park.

The bid has been backed by the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), as the Saudi-led consortium, spearheaded by businesswoman Amanda Staveley, look to end Mike Ashley’s reign of 13 years in the North East.

The Reuben brothers are also set to become part-owners of the Magpies if a deal goes through.

Nevertheless, they may not be the only club owned by Saudis if this attempted buy of Marseille is completed.

These NUFC supporters were slamming Chadwick’s claim:

Geordies, do you think this would affect the takeover? Comment below!

Man United can’t ignore shortcomings of Ryan Sessegnon

[ad_pod ]

Reported Manchester United target Ryan Sessegnon was supposed to be the next Golden Boy of English football.

The versatile Fulham wide-man is just 18 and had a breakthrough season in the Championship in 2017-18.

Deployed in three different positions – left-back, left midfield and high up on the left wing – Sessegnon was a key member of a swashbuckling promotion-winning team, scoring 15 times in the second-tier and laying on six assists. That tally included a hat-trick against Sheffield United in November as Fulham won 5-4.

The performances naturally led to interest from the Premier League. The Telegraph reported in February of last year that Tottenham Hotspur were preparing a £35million bid. Fulham, they claimed, valued him at closer to £50m. Sessegnon was 17.

In July, then-manager Slaviska Jokanovic claimed that Sessegnon was a mix of Real Madrid stars Marcelo and Gareth Bale, per the Evening Standard.

He said: “He is an incredible player project, with a fantastic physical capacity. People compare him to Bale, for me it’s a mix between Marcelo and Bale.

“I’ve used him lately in a more offensive role, but he’s ready to be left-back of a big team that constantly attacks. He still has a lot of room for improvement.”

Promotion came and went and Sessegnon stayed at Craven Cottage, though he has not committed his future to the club. His current contract expires in 18 months and the Evening Standard report that talks are dragging on. He is said to be aware of interest from Manchester United and Spurs. Indeed, the Daily Express claim that United are ready to match that aforementioned £50m asking price.

Yet, at the same time, there is a feeling that Sessegnon is stagnating. Jokanovic, the man who touted Sessegnon as some sort of freak of nature, a player combining the attacking talents of Bale with the defensive assiduity of Marcelo, was sacked in November. Fulham had picked up five points from 12 games when he was relieved of his duties and replaced by Premier League title winner Claudio Ranieri.

But the Italian does not appear to have the same amount of trust in Sessegnon as Jokanovic. Since his appointment on November 14th, Sessegnon has played the full 90 minutes four times. Ranieri has taken charge of 14 games. Fulham are 19th, eight points behind 17th-placed Cardiff City.

Sessegnon made two assists in his first game under Ranieri, a 3-2 win over Southampton, but his playing time has swiftly waned. In Fulham’s last five games – against Burnley, Tottenham, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United – Sessegnon has played a maximum of 45 minutes. He was on the bench against Palace and did not come on as a substitute.

United’s apparent pursuit, then, appears to make little sense. Ranieri had time to get to know Sessegnon, to watch what he can do in training. After doing just that, he opted to sign Ryan Babel in January. Babel, by comparison, has started Fulham’s last four outings.

There is an easy parallel to draw with the United squad. After seeing Luke Shaw explode onto the scene at Southampton under Mauricio Pochettino, United paid £27m to secure his signature in 2014. He became one of the world’s most expensive teenagers once the deal was completed, as he was signed at the age of 18.

It quickly became evident, however, that Shaw did not possess the qualities needed to make the grade at United immediately. He was too weak physically, too positionally rash, too defensively naive.

It has taken Shaw a total of five years to become a genuine first-team option at the club and, even now, he is occasionally kept out of the team by a 33-year-old Ashley Young. That is not to mention the fact that Anthony Martial, on the left wing, has unlocked his potential and appears primed to become a world-beater under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sessegnon appeared to have the world at his feet in the second-tier but the jump to the Premier League has been monumental. His statistics, still, are solid. He has scored two goals and laid on five assists this season.

But the possibility of a move to United sets alarm bells ringing. Ranieri believes Babel is more deserving of a first-team spot after 12 years away from English football and that is about as far from a transfer recommendation as a club can get.

Sessegnon can still make the very top. He is young and he clearly has talent in spades but he needs time to develop and stepping into the cauldron of Old Trafford would not bring out the Gareth Bale-Marcelo hybrid so hyped by Jokanovic – certainly not instantly, anyway.

Instead, it would see him sitting on the bench yet again, watching more accomplished alternatives maraud up and down the left flank.
