Tottenham: Gareth Bale could transform the team
An all too familiar Gareth Bale saga is seemingly once again creeping up on Tottenham and it’s certainly divided the fans.
Indeed, there are some of the opinion that Bale is still a world-class talent that would provide a huge boost to the club. Others are perhaps still hurt by his departure and don’t want the Welshman anywhere near the team. But perhaps it’s time to forget the romantic.
Yes, Bale has largely disowned his Tottenham roots since his exit, but come on! It’s Gareth Bale, who was even mentioned in the same sentence as his former club as recently as yesterday by BBC Sport.
What are the rumours then? And let’s go no further before highlighting that they are exactly that – rumours. Well, they start from the fact that the former Tottenham man seems to be somewhat of an outcast as it stands. Snubbed of a potential final day farewell, Zinedine Zidane has stated Bale no longer fits in the team (as per The Telegraph), essentially hinting towards his departure.
But this represents a conundrum for Real Madrid, as the Welshman has three years left on his contract. Further reports have stated Bale wants to stay in Madrid and will simply continue to pick up his pay cheque. Yet, it has also been reported that Madrid are to offer him on a £10m loan deal to Tottenham (as per the Sun) to get him away from the club and cut into some of his £600,000-a-week wages (as per The Sun).
So, the question now must be, do Tottenham entertain this seemingly implausible possibility? The answer must be yes. In 231 games for Madrid, Bale has scored 102 and assisted 64. Those are mighty impressive stats. He has also scored winning goals in two Champions League finals and a Copa del Rey final. Don’t let the Spanish media fool you, the Welshman has been nothing short of sensational.
The current model Tottenham have been operating under can only take the squad so far. It’s very much been a process of brining players in and moulding them into superstars. Look at Heung-min Son for example. The football he’s playing now is almost incomparable to his first season. But if Tottenham are to catch the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, they need to be brining in players of the same calibre.
Bale is a player that would genuinely strike fear into an opposition. And don’t be suckered into the notion that Bale is always sidelined through injury. He made 42 appearances this season despite often being overlooked by Zidane.
The forward could play behind Kane, alongside him or on the wing. Put simply, he would be an astonishing signing. At 29-years-old, he should really be in the prime of his career and could take Tottenham to the next level. For those saying Bale doesn’t care about Tottenham and they should forget about him. You’re right, his affiliations are indeed somewhere else. But to turn down a cut price deal with Gareth Bale would be verging on lunacy.
While it remains highly unlikely a deal will ever transpire, the thought is still one to entertain. He is a world class talent and would walk into any team in the Premier League.
