Leeds United have to do all they can to sign Liverpool man despite update: Opinion

Leeds United are hoping to go again next season as they seek to overcome their play-off final disappointment.

The Whites have had good news with the news that Marcelo Bielsa will stay put, and there is bound to be a plethora of players linked with the club this summer who can improve the squad.

One man who has been linked with the club this weekend is Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson, who was superb for Derby County last season as Frank Lampard’s men made it to Wembley.

However, with the news report also stating that Liverpool could be set to cash in on Wilson is someone is willing to pay their £21m asking price, we here in the Tavern feel that Leeds need to be doing all they can to try and convince Liverpool to send him to Elland Road next term.

Leeds and Bielsa are desperate to win promotion, and after seeing what Wilson did to them over two legs in the play-offs, all the evidence is there to suggest the 22-year-old would slot right into the squad at Elland Road while suiting Bielsa’s style of play.

Wilson is a player capable of playing in both wide positions if needed, and his 16 goals last season give Leeds something they missed, especially when the likes of Kemar Roofe were out injured, as Patrick Bamford struggled to replicate the goalscoring form Roofe had delivered earlier in the campaign.

While Liverpool could be tempted to cash in, they might well be best suited letting Wilson spend time with a club the size of Leeds and under the guidance of such a world renowned manager like Bielsa.

Jack Harrison has seen his loan spell with the club end, while Pablo Hernandez cannot simply keep going at the level he is at forever. This represents the perfect opportunity for Wilson to move into Leeds XI and make a massive impression.

What a waste: Spurs fans slam Bale after agent comments

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Spurs fans have been reacting to some comments from Gareth Bale’s agent, who ruled out a loan move for the Welsh winger.

Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, has effectively ruled out a move to Tottenham or Manchester United this summer, per Sky Sports.

Barnett told Sky Sports: “Obviously Gareth’s situation at Real hasn’t improved. I think Mr Zidane has decided he can probably do without him, so we have to wait and see.

“There’s more chance of me winning at Ascot than him going out on loan. It’s not going to happen,” he said. “I don’t think he wants to go out on loan. He’s got a lovely life and home in Spain.

“I think it would take something exceptional for him to leave and loans are not on the menu.”

It seems extremely unlikely that Spurs or United would have the funds to pry Bale away from Madrid on a permanent basis, as he has three years left on his current deal and would cost a fortune.

As reported by Football.London, the Welsh international is believed to earn more than £600,000-a-week before tax, and fans are lashing out at his greed after his agent’s comments.

It is quite alarming that the 29 year-old seems content to just warm the bench and pick up his pay packet, as he started just 21 La Liga games last season and scored only eight times, per Whoscored.

Have a look at some of the Twitter reactions down below, where Spurs fans have some very harsh truths for their former hero…

Would Callum O’Dowda be a good signing for Leeds?

[ad_pod ]

According to reports from Football League World, Callum O’Dowda has his heart set on a move to Leeds United after turning down three contract offers from Bristol City.

The Ireland international was tipped as a Leeds target back in January when they were also pursuing Dan James, although more recent reports have suggested the Yorkshire club are no longer interested in his services.

And unfortunately for O’Dowda, he isn’t the only winger linked with a move to Elland Road this summer as Leeds have been looking at the likes of Helder Costa, Ryan Kent and Jack Harrison.

The Yorkshire outfit may be tempted to go back in for the Bristol City man after this latest update, but would he be a good signing?

He is clearly well-versed in second-tier football having played in the Championship for the last three seasons, but with other options linked he may not be the best player available to Leeds this summer.

Football FanCast’s writers have attempted to deliver their verdicts on whether he would be a good signing for Marcelo Bielsa’s side…

Billy Meyers

“The fact that O’Dowda already has his heart set on a move to Leeds is a good thing for the club, and should bode well if he does eventually end up at Elland Road. Most of the fans are a passionate bunch and would surely welcome a player who openly wants to join, and he would also add a lot on the pitch too. With a strong aerial presence for a wide man and the versatility to play in central midfield, O’Dowda appears to be a very well-rounded option who would fit in well with the physical demands of the Championship. With all that in mind, I think he’d be a good acquisition.”

Matt Dawson

“O’Dowda would be a decent addition for Leeds but he wouldn’t be worth raving about. He only scored four goals last season which isn’t amazing yet still represents a career-best in the Championship but his form towards the end of the term, where he netted three times, certainly shows he’s progressing nicely. O’Dowda would help replace last year’s loan signing Harrison if he doesn’t return to Yorkshire this summer, but if Leeds are looking for players capable of helping them achieve promotion they should look elsewhere. O’Dowda has only proved he’s a Championship level player.”

James Beavis

“O’Dowda may want a move to Leeds, but Leeds shouldn’t want to sign him. The 24-year-old wasn’t even a regular in the Bristol City XI last season with 11 of his 31 Championship appearances coming from the substitutes’ bench, which is hardly a good indication of his ability. Averaging one dribble and 1.1 key passes per outing in the league last term for a wide man isn’t exactly inspiring, and suggests that he would need to make a big improvement should he end up making the move to Elland Road.

Having been linked with the likes of Harrison, Costa and Kent this summer, the Whites already have better options on the table than O’Dowda. Harrison showed glimpses of his ability throughout last season’s loan spell, Costa has achieved promotion to the Premier League before with Wolves and Kent bagged six goals and nine assists on loan at Rangers.”

Iglesias has the goals record to be Everton’s main man

[ad_pod ]

Everton have been linked with move for Espanyol forward Borja Iglesias, who scored 20 goals last season.

What’s the story?

According to Estadio Deportivo, Everton have been eyeing a move for the Spanish striker since January.

The report claims Espanyol will discuss Iglesias’ future once he returns from holidays on July 3, and they will expect his €28m (£25m) release clause to be met if he is to leave.

It also claims he is good friends with new West Ham goalkeeper Roberto, who joined the Hammers from Espanyol this summer, and would like to follow him to the Premier League.

Ball, meet net

Splashing out on strikers is a risky game, and Everton know that more than most. After losing Romelu Lukaku, the Toffees brought in the likes of Sandro Ramirez and Cenk Tosun to grab the goals. Neither player got anywhere close to meeting expectations.

And while fans may well look at Iglesias as just another Sandro, the 26 year-old’s consistency in front of goal suggests his form will carry over to England, unlike the 2017 flop.

This season, Iglesias bagged 17 in La Liga and three in cup competitions. In the 2017-18 season, albeit in the second division, he grabbed 22 goals in 39 league appearances, and the year before that he struck a ridiculous 34 times in 39 Segunda Division outings.

The striker has bagged double-digit league goals in every full professional season he has played in his career, and also has the physicality to thrive in England too, winning 1.8 aerial duels per game last year.

With such a consistent record in front of goal, it seems implausible that Iglesias would suddenly forget how to stick the ball in the net if he moved to the Premier League, so this one is definitely worth the risk for the Toffees.

Manchester United fans react as Ander Herrera explains departure

[ad_pod ]

Having joined from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 2014, Ander Herrera endured a rather inconsistent career at Manchester United.

The all-action midfielder featured heavily in the early years of his time at Old Trafford, but began to see his first-team opportunities at the club become more and more limited, playing just 22 out of 38 league games last season.

After letting his contract expire this summer, it was confirmed that Herrera had joined French giants PSG on a free transfer. Now, speaking to Marca, the Spanish international has revealed that differences in opinion over his importance in United’s future plans saw him make the decision to leave Old Trafford.

After hearing the 29-year-old’s comments on his United exit, fans of the Manchester side took to Twitter to voice their opinion and many were seemingly divided about the issue.

Some seemed to take Herrera’s comments with a pinch of salt and instead suggested that the Spaniard’s reported wage demands were the main reason behind him choosing to join the cash-rich French side.

Others however seemed to be on the midfielder’s side and empathised with his comments that United’s offer had “arrived late” and felt it was a massive symbol of the current plight at Old Trafford.

Check out some of the mixed reaction of United fans below:

Liverpool: It seems AC Milan really are quite keen on Dejan Lovren

AC Milan are set to ramp up their interest in Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren to ensure he signs this summer, according to Italian outlet TuttoSport (via Calcio Mercato).

A central defender has been highlighted as the number one priority by new boss Marco Giampaolo and Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren, whose role in the squad has somewhat diminished since the rise of Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, apparently fits the bill.

After claiming himself to be one of the best central defenders in the world, the Croatian has somewhat struggled to find a foothold in Klopp’s plans. Following his return from injury, which left him unavailable until October, Lovren made just 18 appearances all season, and was left on the bench for the all-important Champions League semi-finals and final.

BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks wrote back in January that the former Southampton man ‘might have to start looking for new employers’ following the impressive performance of Fabinho as a central defender against Brighton, while the Liverpool Echo suggested new signing Sepp van den Berg could be fast-tracked into first-team thinking, such is the level of his talent.

Sky Sports, however, have recently claimed the European champions do not want to sell the man who has racked up 126 appearances (Transfermarkt) under Klopp’s stewardship, despite the options they have in central defensive areas.

So, Milan’s interest may indeed fall on deaf ears, should the Reds continue in their reported stance of wanting to retain his services.

Liverpool fans, do you agree Lovren should be sold? Let us know in the comments below…
