One of West Brom’s rising stars could about to be embroiled in a January transfer saga as interest begins to ramp up onto another spectrum.

Nathan Ferguson has only just broken into first-team stardom up in the west Midlands, but his early-season form has attracted the interest of Europe’s elite as well as a few teams in the Premier League.

Originally it was Crystal Palace who showed interest as they look to fill the void left behind by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and now they have been joined by the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus – if reports are to be believed.

The 19-year-old started life out as a centre-back amongst Albion’s youth ranks, but he began the season at right-back before shifting to the left-hand side of the defence in Kieran Gibbs’ absence.

Ferguson has performed so well in the role that he has kept the former Arsenal man out of the starting lineup since his return from injury.

Several of the Hawthorns faithful have been debating his potential exit, and many seem to believe that every player has his price with the promising defender being no different.

One supporter claimed sporting and technical director Luke Dowling could use any fee to unearth more gems while another said they could go out and buy Mason Holgate as a replacement – his impact from last season is clearly still in the minds of some.

A further member of the Albion crowd said he would ‘1000%’ sell Ferguson for the right price as people seem to forget that the club still has Gibbs with one more labelling the club as ‘crazy’ if they were to not sell the youngster.

Aw, how sweet – Marcus Rashford has responded to Harry Maguire’s congratulations post, in which he claims to be delighted to not have to face him on the opposing team, by reciprocating his joy that the pair will remain teammates for the foreseeable future.

Having played against Rashford on eight separate occasions throughout his career, first for Hull City and then Leicester, the man affectionately dubbed “Slab Head” has won just once against his current teammate, drawing twice and losing a further five more.

Maguire joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side for a world record fee in the summer after two years with fellow top-four hopefuls Leicester City. And after congratulating Rashford on hitting 50 goals for the club – a feat he completed against Norwich City on Sunday, despite missing a penalty – the defender dug up an image of the pair clashing with one another at Old Trafford.

The pair will be hoping to build on the club’s recent form, which has seen them win two in two games, when they travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Wednesday.

It seems the Scottish Premiership has a title race on its hands.

After years of Celtic domination, it looks as though Glasgow rivals Rangers are ready to take the fight to the Bhoys. Although they may currently lie second in the Premier League table, that is only on goal difference, with just one goal separating the two sides.

The Gers’ success has been helped by a trio of veterans who are all set to be offered new contracts with the club, per The Scottish Sun. Allan McGregor, 37, has conceded just six times in his first nine games of the league campaign, whilst Jermaine Defoe – also 37 – tops the division’s goalscoring charts with 10. Steven Davis, three years younger but still 34, has also played a part in 10 of the first 11 matches.

All three have contributed to the team’s success already this term, and it remains to be seen whether they can go all the way. However, they are just part of a short-term plan, and it seems to be a bizarre decision to attempt to keep them beyond the current campaign.

Whilst a title is the first priority, there appears to be little planning for the future. The Ibrox outfit have the joint-oldest squad in the league, with an average age of 27.1. Others, such as Scott Arfield, are also approaching the end of their careers and could do with being replaced.

The issue is also their wages. Whilst former England international Defoe would surely take a pay-cut if he stayed in Scotland, his total annual salary of £5.38m would be well out of Rangers’ price range, and Allan McGregor and Steven Davis are likely to be amongst the club’s top earners considering their track records.

Financially, there are rumours the Gers are in trouble. Last year, they lost £14.3m, which was more than the rest of the league combined.

Surely keeping ahold of those three veterans is part of a path towards disaster, and brings back memories of the club’s collapse at the start of the decade. Yes, these players may be helping in the short-term, but in the long-term there is a danger their renewals could constitute a problem.

Perhaps the club should rethink the potential new deals.

Birmingham City are reportedly preparing a January move for Nahki Wells in a potential deal which would threaten to derail QPR’s season.

The Burnley striker is in his second loan spell at the club in as many years and he appears to be enjoying life under Mark Warburton, playing alongside Jordan Hugill.

According to The Sun (03/11, p.61), as reported by HITC, the Clarets want £6m for the 29-year-old, a figure which likely puts him out of the west London outfit’s reach if they were to attempt a permanent transfer.

The club had to offload players in the summer in an attempt to reduce the wage bill, and therefore an approach by Blues would likely leave QPR in a position where they are forced to see Wells depart.

Mark Warburton will hold out hope that Burnley stay true to the season-long loan deal arrangement, and not recall him in a couple of months in order to move him on, as to lose him now would be a big blow.

Wells has become a key focal point of the attack and fitted in well with Hugill and Eberechi Eze, and his departure would likely mean that QPR can say goodbye to any hopes of making the play-offs.

The Bermuda international already has seven league goals this term, equalling his total in the 2018/19 season.

It also means he is well on his way to bettering the totals achieved by the highest scorer in each of the past four campaigns, with Matt Smith’s tally of 11 in 2017/18 the highest in those years.

That underlines his importance to the team, while he has twice linked up with Hugill to participate in goals, allowing his strike partner to thrive in this QPR set-up as well.

According to WhoScored, he has averaged 0.8 key passes from his 13 league games, and that has played a significant part in QPR ranking joint-third for goals scored in the Championship, with a total of 24.

It is difficult to find all-round strikers such as Wells, particularly when the club is seeking loan deals due to budget constraints, and that means the club could easily fail to replace him sufficiently.

Losing his goals would increase the reliance on Hugill and Eze, both of whom face an uncertain future, with Hugill also on loan and Premier League interest in the latter.

As a result, QPR should do whatever they can to keep him at the club, as he could be an effective long-term servant.

Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Cedric Soares revealed in an interview with The Telegraph that he plans to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old – signed from Sporting Lisbon for £4.7m – spent the second half of last season on loan at Inter Milan, but has since returned to St Mary’s to make five appearances this term.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, the 33-cap Portugal international has made a pretty big revelation in stating his desire to leave when his terms run out.

“I have just this season left. Right now after this season I think I am going to make another step and see what is the best for me. It’s a great opportunity and it’s something (being out-of-contract) that maybe happens once in your life for a player.”

One supporter said that they’re “not worried” about Cedric leaving, stating that it might actually encourage the south coast side to sign some full-backs “for once” – The Athletic reveal that the Saints are targeting reinforcements at centre-back and full-back in the New Year.
