A seven-goal thriller unfolded at Elland Road this evening as Leeds United hit top-flight rivals Newcastle for five in a tense Premier League battle.

Despite Steve Bruce’s side doing well to cancel out the Whites’ first two goals, their fluid attack proved to be too much for the opposition defence.

Not only did Leeds bank five goals, but they all came from different goal-scorers, which will be a great boost for the team’s confidence.

Jack Harrison seriously impressed by scoring and creating a goal, but one man who went under the radar with a creative showing was Raphinha.

Raphinha excels

The right-winger may not have got himself on the scoresheet or provided an assist, but his ability to create chances really helped Leeds secure their emphatic win tonight.

According to Sofascore, Raphinha completed 100% of his attempted dribbles and long balls, and also made two interceptions and two tackles.

Not only did he cause problems for the defence, but he also helped contribute to his own, striking a perfect balance between his attacking and defensive input.

As it stands, Leeds have three recognised right-wingers on their senior roster – Ian Poveda, plus summer signings Raphinha and Helder Costa have been competing for a spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s starting lineup.

The latter started the first eight games of the season before he started dropping to the bench in favour of his Brazilian teammate.

The 24-year-old signing has made a huge impact already and has impressed the likes of Phil Hay. The journalist lauded him for being a “bargain” signing after he joined from Rennes in October for £17m.

This win is a huge result for the Whites, who have now leapfrogged today’s opposition thanks to their hefty 5-2 scoreline. Their next match will be against Manchester United on Sunday, which will be a big hurdle to clear for the newly-promoted club.

اكتفى لاعبو الأهلي الذين شاركوا في التشكيل الأساسي بالفريق خلال مباراة غزل المحلة أمس بمران استشفائي اليوم.

فيما خاض باقي اللاعبين الذين لم يشاركوا في المباراة أو البدلاء مرانا شاملا.

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has discussed whether Leeds United got away with a couple of decisions in their recent 1-0 win.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men had picked up a 1-0 win over the Burnley on Sunday, thanks to a first-half goal from Patrick Bamford, who had scored from the penalty spot. Having said that, the Clarets had a goal of their disallowed after Ashley Barnes had found the back of the net but Ben Mee was adjudged to have fouled Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier before the ball fell to the striker (as per BBC Sport).

Halsey believes Leeds were lucky against Burnley

Halsey, talking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern discussed the incident involving Mee and Meslier and the former referee feels that match official Rob Jones made two errors in that moment and he made his surprise clear at the fact that VAR didn’t check for a possible foul on Mee. He believes that Meslier indeed did take Mee out before Barnes ended up scoring the goal.

He said:

“I think the referee Rob Jones has made two errors in this situation. One was blowing too quickly because once the ball goes in the back of the net, but he’s blown the whistle before that ball goes in, that nullifies any VAR goal check. However, what can be checked is a potential penalty because he’s blowing his whistle for a free kick to Leeds. Now for me, the Leeds goalkeeper just comes out and just absolutely takes Ben Mee out. He comes out and knees him in the back and just goes through him, so I was amazed that VAR didn’t check that and recommend a review for a penalty.”

Unsurprisingly, Sean Dyche criticised the decision to disallow Burnley’s goal and he made it clear that Mee had eyes only for the ball. He feels that it is ‘impossible’ that Mee committed a foul since he was trying to head the ball with his back to the goalkeeper (as per BBC Sport).

He said: “At the other end, the keeper goes through with his knee in Ben Mee’s back. Ben has got nothing other than eyes for the ball, that is all he is concentrating on.

“The ball drops and the referee doesn’t even give it a chance to see what happens, because it is not a foul, it’s impossible it can be a foul when he’s just tried to head the ball.”

Bielsa’s men were lucky to survive

Considering Halsey’s comments, Leeds were lucky to get away without a goal or a penalty being awarded against them in the game and perhaps, Barnes’ goal should have stood on Sunday, or a foul should have been awarded.

Dyche even said that the decision to award Leeds a penalty in the game wasn’t exactly a decisive one. He feels that if the foul had taken place anywhere else on the pitch, it may not have been given as a foul. He felt that Nick Pope made clear contact with ball before colliding with Bamford (as per BBC Sport).

So considering these contentious decisions, it is fair to say that Leeds had a few big decisions go their way and perhaps, on another day, that might not have been the case.

AC Milan are the latest side to reportedly register an interest in Liverpool striker Divock Origi ahead of the January transfer window, which could represent the perfect opportunity for Jurgen Klopp to axe the Belgian.

What’s the word?

According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur on Twitter, Milan have held a conversation about potentially taking the former Lille man on loan.

This would surely suit Origi, as he is not currently getting a look in with the Reds, whilst Stefano Pioli’s side currently sit top of Serie A, so he could still be part of a title challenge if he were to move to Italy.

Does Origi have a future with Liverpool?

However, the 25-year-old’s performances this season certainly suggest that he doesn’t really have a future at Liverpool, as he has disappointed in his few performances in the Champions League, averaging a shocking 6.29 rating, whilst he has managed just three substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Therefore, if possible, the Reds should sell the Belgian international permanently in January, rather than holding out hope that he could rediscover his form in the Italian league, where he would need to keep out the superb Zlatan Ibrahimovic if he wanted to start up front for I Rossoneri.

This perhaps seems unlikely when you consider the Swedish striker has averaged an incredible 8.41 rating for his performances so far this season, whilst Origi has found the net just twice, both of which came in the League Cup win against Lincoln City.

Of course, the striker will be fondly remembered for his role in helping Liverpool win the Champions League in the 2018/19 season, after his brace against Barcelona and his late goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

Following his performance against Spurs, former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer was full of praise for him, saying:

“Origi produced an outstanding finish once again. I was at the semi-final against Barcelona at Anfield and he was immense. To produce another incredible finish in the final is massive credit to his drive and belief.

“When he was away on loan he couldn’t even get any game time — and he has it tough in this Liverpool team as that front three are impossible to budge.

“But what a two months it has been for him. He has written himself into the history books at Liverpool Football Club.”

Unfortunately for Origi, the occasional impressive performance shouldn’t be enough to see him stay at Anfield for the long-term, as both his performances and effort levels this season have been far from good enough, so Michael Edwards should attempt to negotiate a deal that sees the Belgian striker leave the Merseyside club permanently next month.

وأضاف: “قبل أكثر من مباراة أمام مانشستر يونايتد، كنت أتخيل دائمًا طريقة تسجيلي للأهداف، لم أكن موفقًا في أول موسمين أمامهم ولكن تحسن الأمر وسجلت العديد من الأهداف”.

It’s time for Tottenham Hotspur to move Lucas Moura on during this transfer window.

The Brazilian winger was an absolute hero only 18 months ago as his dramatic come-from-behind hat-trick in Amsterdam fired Spurs into their first-ever Champions League final, but ever since then, things have quickly gone downhill for the former PSG star.

It says a lot that his only defining moment this season has been a sublime free-kick against eighth-tier Marine in the FA Cup. On Sunday afternoon, he was snubbed again despite all of Steven Bergwijn’s fitness concerns.

The 28-year-old has now only started four of Spurs’ 18 outings in the Premier League, a rather damning indictment towards Jose Mourinho’s feelings on the wide man, you’d imagine.

It’s easy to see why he’s been snubbed so many times – heck, even in midweek without Bergwijn, the Portuguese boss turned to Moussa Sissoko at right-wing instead.

That’s either blasphemy or simply proves that Moura is no longer up to it in north London.

Moura has scored only one goal in the Premier League since December 2019. By comparison, central defender Toby Alderweireld and even right-back Serge Aurier have both found the triple the number of times in the competition.

In addition, his attacking output has dropped immensely – per WhoScored, we’ve seen a regression in dribbles, a key facet of any winger, from 2.1 per game in 2019/20 to 0.4 per match this campaign.

No wonder Mourinho doesn’t start him anymore.

Maybe it comes as a surprise seeing as Moura’s teammate, Eric Dier, waxed lyrical over him in training to the Premier League’s official YouTube channel less than two months ago, he said:

“There’s no-one worse to train against than Lucas Moura. He’s a nightmare. He’s so fast, so sharp.”

Now valued at just £22.5m by Transfermarkt, it might be time to finally sell him as there’s no point having him around if he can’t start against rock-bottom Sheffield United.

According to Eurosport’s Dean Jones, Moura is one of several players the club will listen to offers for, should the right one come in for him this window.

That’s a good stance to take right now as getting his reported £110k-per-week salary off the wage bill could help fund a new signing – it’s well-known that Mourinho wants a new central defender and quite possibly a box-to-box midfielder too.

He can afford to offload Moura too as Bergwijn is the regular in the role, having started eight of 12 top-flight appearances, and there’s still Gareth Bale, who is yet to hit the ground running since his sensational return in the summer.

It’s simply time for Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to offload the £25m star after three years at the club.
