Arsenal must make a ruthless call on Alex Runarsson in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Iceland international only arrived at the Emirates in the summer, joining from French side Dijon as a direct replacement for the Aston Villa bound Emiliano Martinez.

With Bernd Leno established as Mikel Arteta’s established number one goalkeeper, Runarsson has been restricted to sporadic appearances, getting onto the pitch just five times in total.

Now, The Athletic claim that the Gunners are willing to let the £40k-a-week ace go out on loan, and that the Premier League side would be keen on bringing in a replacement before they do so.

Liability to Arteta

Even despite playing just five games for the club, the 25-year-old has shown nothing to prove to Arteta that he can be a worthy back-up goalkeeper to Leno.

The Gunners were arguably spoiled by the fact that they had Emiliano Martinez as their reserve shot-stopper; the Argentine is proving with Villa now that he is more than capable of being a Premier League side’s number one by keeping eight clean sheets in 15 top-flight games.

In contrast, Runarsson’s most memorable moments for the Gunners have been his high-profile clangers, not least when he literally chucked away Arsenal’s chances of a Carabao Cup semi-final by dropping a Riyad Mahrez free-kick into his own net – the north Londoners would eventually lose 4-1 on the night.

Speaking after the game, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, said: “I almost feel bad jumping into his nightmare. People make mistakes, from a goalkeeper’s perspective it looks like he got himself into the right position but takes his eye off the ball.

“I’m sure Arsenal fans are thinking ‘why don’t we play our No 1 goalkeeper?’ Goalkeepers don’t need to rest, I know it’s the Carabao Cup but it’s a big game for him today. It didn’t really make sense playing him in the first place.”

The fact is Runarsson has only shown himself to be a liability for Arteta. Given how much the Gunners had to depend on Martinez last season following Leno’s injury, it would be a nightmare if something similar happened to the German now and only the former was available for these upcoming Premier League and Europa League knockout games.

It may be a ruthless call given that the Icelandic ace only joined in the summer, but it’s one that will no leave the Arsenal boss relieved given how much he has already cost them in his limited game-time this season.

January is undoubtedly one of the biggest months of the year for speculation and 2021 is no different at Celtic.

The Hoops are in a spot of bother and having won just seven of their last 21 outings heading into their clash with Livingston on Wednesday, they were over 20 points behind Rangers.

Of course, they have games in hand, but it would take a major miracle for the Bhoys to beat their rivals to the SPFL crown.

Consequently, Neil Lennon’s job is under threat with supporters even gathering outside Parkhead in protest.

Eddie Howe has been touted with taking over from the Northern Irishman while former Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov threw another of their ex-players into the hat this week, suggesting Roy Keane would be a good move.

The 49-year-old hot-headed pundit led Sunderland to Championship glory in 2006/07 in one of his 16 honours as a player and coach, but he has been out of management since 2011. Keane rejected the chance to return to Glasgow in 2014 and very rarely do second opportunities like that come about.

Though, if majority shareholder Dermot Desmond viewed him as a suitable replacement for Lennon should he be sacked then the Manchester United legend could help to create a fearsome duo.

That’s because the Glaswegians have been linked with making a move for Preston midfielder Ben Pearson, someone available on a free transfer next summer.

Preston boss Alex Neil has already given the green light for him to leave, and if both Keane and Pearson arrive at Celtic, it would be a full-blooded partnership.

In many senses, Pearson embodies the player that Keane was. The 26-year-old is one of the most aggressive around and in the last four and a half years alone, he has picked up 52 yellow cards.

Like the television pundit was during his playing days, the 5 ft 9 Pearson loves to throw in a tackle and nothing sums that up more than his poor disciplinary record. Keane, for instance, picked up an alarming 31 red cards in his career.

His cut-throat nature has continued since he retired and he’s known to be a particularly demanding individual as a coach. Described as “unbelievable” by Michael Chopra for the way he took him under his wing at Sunderland, a similar sort of relationship could be established between these two Celtic targets.

Keane has made a living from being bad-tempered and hostile in the challenge. Pearson is proving exactly the same in the English Championship.

Just imagine how destructive the midfielder could be under a manager who despite being so argumentative, harnessed that to win a plethora of titles in the process.

This could be a dream combination for the Bhoys.

Com o limite de cinco por jogo se aproximando, já existe certa resistência interna pela contratação de um novo atleta de fora do país. Isso porque, principalmente para o Campeonato Brasileiro, se outro estrangeiro for contratado, alguém vai precisar sair da lista de relacionados da partida.

O problema é que o Botafogo precisa de reforços logo, como já dito pelo próprio clube e corre para fechar com eles. Não só para uma posição. E pouco importa se eles falam português, espanhol, guarani, francês…

يصل المغربيان أشرف بن شرقي ومحمد أوناجم لاعبا الزمالك إلى القاهرة مساء اليوم الخميس من المغرب، بعد انتهاء إجازتهما التي حصلا عليها خلال الفترة الماضية بسبب توقف بطولة الدوري المصري الممتاز.

Everton full-back Lucas Digne let Carlo Ancelotti down by producing a performance that was as bad, if not worse, than Robin Olsen’s against Manchester United in Saturday night’s 3-3 draw.

The Toffees salvaged a point in the dying embers at Old Trafford when Dominic Calvert-Lewin slotted home his 17th goal of the season in all competitions, to record strikes in back-to-back Premier League fixtures for the first time since October.

Scott McTominay had appeared to seal the win for the Red Devils when Olsen seemed to slip when scurrying a couple of yards across his line to deal with the midfielder’s header.

McTominay’s goal was not the only time that Olsen struggled, either, with the Sweden international unable to replicate his midweek excellence against Leeds United.

Instead, Olsen was rooted to the spot when Bruno Fernandes’ perfectly placed strike sailed over his head in first-half stoppage-time, caught unaware by the dipping nature of the Portuguese maestro’s shot.

The AS Roma loanee’s blushes were spared thanks to Calvert-Lewin’s late equaliser, poking home Michael Keane’s flick-on following Digne’s deep free-kick into David de Gea’s box.

Digne had come close to causing the home side trouble with his deliveries moments earlier, only to find Marcus Rashford back defending. And while a shot from the £30m-rated gem rattled the woodwork in the final stages, De Gea would argue that he always had that covered.

Again below his usual standards, Digne won just 20% of his ground duels having lost four of his five contests compared to an average 47% success rate, while Wan-Bissaka won five of his seven, McTominay won four of his six and Greenwood won five of nine as the trio locked down United’s right-hand side.

With Digne enjoying little success on Everton’s left-wing both offensively and defensively, he ultimately let Ancelotti down on a night where the Toffees could have moved to within five points of their opponents with two games in hand. Yet, instead, they now trail by eight points and have lost pace in the race for the top-four.
