Liverpool are linked to Dusan Vlahovic

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic as the summer transfer window approaches.

What’s the story?

According to an exclusive report by Inside Futbol, the Anfield outfit have held talks with the representatives of the 21-year-old and have also made contact with the Serie A outfit over signing the highly-rated youngster.

Vlahovic caught the eye with a string of impressive performances throughout 2020/21, bagging 21 goals in 37 league appearances for La Viola.

Next Firmino

Liverpool struggled to live up to their usual high standards last season, finishing in a disappointing third place in the Premier League table as they let their top-flight crown slip without much of a fight.

While injuries to their first-choice centre-backs severely hampered Jurgen Klopp’s men, so did the poor form of several of his forwards.

Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino were particularly underwhelming, with the usually prolific pair contributing to a combined total of just 20 league goals, 14 fewer than the tally they managed two years previously.

As the Anfield outfit look to rebuild their side and mount another title charge, adding another attacking force appears to be high up on Klopp’s wish list.

The likes of Patson Daka and Raphinha have been linked with a move to Merseyside in recent weeks, and now another name has been thrown into the mix in the shape of Vlahovic.

Forza Italian Football editor Conor Clancy has previously heaped praise on the Serbia international following his extraordinary form for Fiorentina.

“He’s really incredible, and it really caught me by surprise because I’d seen him play in the flesh a few times, and he scored a great goal against Inter, and there was a lot of hype in Florence about him. People were saying this guy’s the real deal, and I just couldn’t see it,” said Clancy in an interview with This is Futbol.

“He’s just a complete number nine, and I know it’s just off the back of one season, but he’s strong, can link play up, can hold the ball up, and most importantly, he’s scoring goals. He’s one of those players that when he looks confident, you almost expect him to score every time he plays.”

A move for the 6 ft 2 hitman would appear to be a logical move for director of football Michael Edwards then, and he could seal Firmino’s natural replacement by securing Vlahovic’s signature this summer, with the Brazilian looking like he is now past the peak of his career.

And, in other news…Klopp must brutally axe £60k-p/w Liverpool starlet this summer, he’s not good enough

Waleed Hussain18-Feb-2001A splendid 104 by Sadagopan Ramesh, his 195-run second wicket standwith VVS Laxman (94) and fine spin bowling by Colin Miller who baggedsix wickets for 90 runs highlighted an eventful second day’s play inthe three day match between India A and the touring Australian cricketteam at the Vidarbha Cricket Association ground in Nagpur on Sunday.India A who were 71 for one at stumps on the opening day in reply tothe Australians’ first innings total of 291 were all out for 368. Theinnings ended 78 minutes after the tea interval and in the remainingtime, the Australians scored 39 for one off eight overs. The morning belonged to the home team and Ramesh and Laxman were allsmiles as they came in to lunch on 203 for one off 49 overs. At theinterval, Ramesh was on 99 and Laxman on 68. The session produced 132runs off 31 overs with no damage in the wickets department.Ramesh carried on from where he left off last evening. He reached hishalf-century in the sixth over of the morning with a pull shot offDamien Fleming. He kept a steady flow of runs from one end as Laxmansettled down at the other. Ramesh was the most aggressive in thesession but just missed getting his hundred by the interval.Laxman was given his first reprieve by Mathew Hayden in the gully whenhe chased an outswinger from Fleming in the second over of themorning. He was lucky again at 10 when a bouncer from Gillespie wentoff Laxman’s gloves and fell inches short off Langer at gully.Laxman went on to get his half-century off 111 balls laced with nineboundaries. Ramesh was the dominant partner but when he reached thenineties, he seemed nervous. Laxman then took over centre stage andplayed some aggressive shots to ease off the pressure on Ramesh. After lunch, however, Miller turned the tide in favour of theAustralians with a five wicket haul. By the interval, he had baggedfive for 76 from 27 overs to reduce India A to 299 for eight off 79overs. The session saw a remarkable change in the proceedings as 96runs were scored off 30 overs but at the cost of seven wickets.Ramesh duly reached his century immediately after lunch and Laxmancontinued to blaze away. But then Ramesh touched a wide delivery fromGillespie and edged the ball to Gilchrist. Ramesh’s 101 came off 158balls with a score of boundaries. He and Laxman added 195 runs for thesecond wicket off 43.4 overs.Soon after, Laxman missed out on his century by six runs when he drovethe ball in the air, to Steve Waugh in the covers. He played 157 ballswith 17 hits to the fence. The scoreboard read 231 when the second wicket fell. One run later,Dinesh Mongia was back in the pavilion. The score did not move anyfurther after that as three more wickets fell on the same score of232. Dinesh Mongia, Laxman and Hemang Badani all fell in quicksuccession.Balaji Rao showed signs of a fightback but could not counter the spinof Miller. He holed out to Fleming on the boundary trying to clear thefence, for six runs off 35 balls. Harbhajan Singh soon followed afterscoring 12 runs off eight balls, with three hits to the fence. RahulSanghvi had no clue to the bowling and was trapped on the back foot byMiller for one run.The last session of the day produced a fighting knock from the Indianstumper Nayan Mongia who played a brave innings to ensure that theIndia A team got the lead. He remained unbeaten on 71 off 102 ballswith eight hits to the fence.Australia took the second new ball after 81 overs. Mongia went afterDamien Fleming in the 86th over, hitting him for 18 runs. He was wellsupported by Debasish Mohanty and the two added 75 runs for the ninthwicket off 21.3 overs. Mohanty played a patient 73-ball knock and hitthree boundaries and one six for his 28 runs. The Australian openers batted cautiously in the second innings. Eventhe usually explosive Slater tried to leave deliveries outside theoffstump. He slashed at an outswinger from Ashish Nehra but was letoff at Gully by SS Das. The other opener Mathew Hayden too had hisshare of good fortune when a cut off Mohanty fell inches away from theoutstretched hands of Rahul Sanghvi at gully.First change bowler Harbhajan Singh spelt doom for Slater who failedto time a pull shot, only to find Balaji Rao at midwicket. Slaterscored 11 runs from 25 balls. Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer ensuredthat no further damage was done to the innings before close of play.

'Nós vamos continuar com Marcelo Cabo', diz dirigente do Atlético-GO

Piadas no futebol acontecem.

Everton add Rudi Garcia to their list of candidates

Everton’s search for a new manager could come to a close in the coming days with the Toffees in the final stages of their bid to sign Nuno Santo.

The Portuguese left Wolves a number of weeks ago and is now a free agent.

That being said, things can collapse quickly and Everton must have other candidates primed and ready to enter negotiations.

After all, Nuno was on the verge of joining Crystal Palace before a deal fell through at the 11th hour.

On the chalkboard

The Toffees have been linked with a number of new coaches from Rafa Benitez and Christophe Galtier to Roberto Martinez.

However, the freshest name on their lips is former Lyon manager Rudi Garcia.

The Daily Mail suggested earlier this week that they’d added the 57-year-old to their list of candidates to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

Garcia left Lyon last month after the French side failed to qualify for the Champions League which doesn’t bode enormously well for Everton.

That being said, his record prior to this season with them was enormously impressive, meaning he could be a better appointment than Nuno.

He immediately revived the fortunes of Lyon after they won just two of their opening nine matches in 2019/20.

After Garcia entered the camp, he guided them to five wins and a draw in his first eight games in charge.

French football ended up being cancelled due to the pandemic with Lyon in seventh but in cup competitions, they were a team to be feared.

They reached the League Cup final and French Cup semi-final and surpassed all expectations in Europe, reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

In the process, he revived the career of a certain Memphis Depay, proving he can get the best from players who need a leg up in order to reach their potential.

The Dutchman scored 15 in 22 last term before racking up 22 in 40 outings during the course of the current season.

Hailed for his “exceptional” team talks by Lyon CEO Jean-Michel Aulas, he is also a strong motivator and talker in the dressing room. On that evidence, Garcia would be a smart choice for the Everton hierarchy.

He’d certainly be a more exciting option than the inflexible and stubborn Nuno.

Dolphins romp to nine-wicket win in SBC semifinal

The KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins galloped to a nine-wicket victory over Eastern Province on the back of a run-a-ball century opening partnership in the first leg of their Standard Bank Cup semi-final at St George’s Park on Wednesday night

Peter Robinson14-Feb-2001The KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins galloped to a nine-wicket victory over Eastern Province on the back of a run-a-ball century opening partnership in the first leg of their Standard Bank Cup semi-final at St George’s Park on Wednesday night. With Gulam Bodi hammering out 56 off 50 balls and Doug Watson putting together a more measured 72 not out, the Natalians made light of a two-paced pitch and the EP attack to romp home with 13 of their 45 overs to spare.Defending a total of 172 for nine, the home team were simply unable to contain Bodi and Watson once the Natal pair had settled and after 92 had come off the first 15 overs of the innings the outcome had already been decided to all intents and purposes. The first-wicket stand eventually yielded 111 off 110 deliveries before Bodi, who had helped himself to eight fours all around the wicket, chanced his arm once too often, mishitting the offspinner Shafiek Abrahams to hole out to Dave Callaghan at long off. His departure, however, brought in Wade Wingfield who promptly picked up where Bodi had left off.Wingfield crunched out an unbeaten 40 off 52 balls, finishing the match with a straight six off Robin Peterson while Watson’s innings took him 92 deliveries and and included six fours and two sixes. It was a good enough effort to earn him the man of the match award. It was as comprehensive a drubbing as the Natalians might have hoped for and it should make them firm favourites for Friday’s second leg at Kingsmead. The EP innings was an undistinguished affair, slipping quickly to 6 for two before a succession of middle order batsmen played themselves in only to get themselves out.In the end James Bryant’s 31 was the top score with Dave Callaghan making 30 as the home side struggled to come to terms with the pitch and a Natal attack which stuck to the basics well. As might have been expected, Shaun Pollock showed few ill-effects from his trip to Australia earlier in the week, finishing with two for 23 off his nine overs, while Eldine Baptiste was also almost impossible to hit, bowling his nine out in one spell for two for 29.There was even time among this for Lance Klusener to trundle up two overs of off spin. He conceded only nine, but on the evidence of this effort, he might be well advised to stick to his day job.

Unknown Foster named as bowling coach

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Thursday named virtually unknownDaryl Foster as the national team’s bowling coachcum consultant fortour to England another mind boggling decision which will be debatedfor days to come

27-Apr-2001The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Thursday named virtually unknownDaryl Foster as the national team’s bowling coachcum consultant fortour to England another mind boggling decision which will be debatedfor days to come.An official of the PCB revealed that Foster would also work asconsultant of the team but his contract was only for the two Tests”which is extendable upto the tri-nation one-day series”.The first Test at Lord’s begins May 17 while the second Test at OldTrafford concludes June 4. The 18-day one-day series, also involvingAustralia and the hosts, will kick off at Edgbaston June 7.The PCB spokesman added that a full-time coach to replace sacked JavedMiandad would be named `soon’ but confirmed that Foster would join theteam in England where it is due to arrive May 2.Although no details about the financial package offered to the formerKent county coach were released, but was anybody’s guess that ifGeoffrey Boycott can claim 30,000 pounds for a 15-day coaching stint,Foster would be getting the same if not more. The free-spending PCB sustained the criticizm of wasting money onBoycott saying the Yorkshireman was sponsored by a food chain. But itwill have to come up with a sound explanation to justify theinvestment on Foster. It means all the current expenses to run the establishment are beingmet from previous earnings whether they be the 1996 World Cup profits$6 million from PILCOM or television rights of the recent home series. It may not be out of context to mention here that the PCB has notconducted any audit of expenses for the last 18 months. And ifanything has been done, the official document has not seen thedaylight. On the face of it, it appears that Foster has been hired specificallyfor controversial pacer Shoaib Akhtar, who underwent remodelling ofhis bowling action in the University of Western Australia in Perth. The PCB has been emphasising for the last two days that it has proofthat Shoaib’s action was clean a claim based on the report submittedby Foster’s university. The PCB admitted that Foster’s appointment did have an influence ofhim working with Shoaib. Which means that in Foster, the PCB has hireda “lawyer” for Shoaib to counter the hostile British media which iscertainly not going to make the pacer’s life easy.Foster’s job description as bowling coach is nothing but a belatedattempt to give a legal cover because it is anybody’s guess that inthe presence of Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram, if selected, who couldbe better persons to guide the young pacers.Wasim and Waqar together have around 20 years of experience of playingin England while the second Test is at Wasim’s home countryLancashire.Besides, if Wasim and Waqar are so deadly, it is not because they gotthe guidance of a bowling coach. They were nurtured by Imran Khan whotutored them and passed on valuable tips on the field rather than onthe drawing board. It is the second time that a specific person to handle and look afterShoaib has been appointed. Earlier Dr Tauseef Razzak toured NewZealand with the Pakistan cricket team specially to look after Shoaibwho has become a regular “tourist” than a playing member.Shoaib, on whom the PCB has already spent millions, has failed tosustain a series in his previous three tours. The same is likely tohappen again no matter whom the PCB appoints considering Shoaib’s pastrecord.

Benitez won’t affect Newcastle takeover

Lee Ryder has dropped a promising claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United as big news emerged on Rafa Benitez.

The Lowdown: Benitez to Everton?

As per football presenter Jim White, Benitez is on the brink of becoming the new manager at Everton after discussions, after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid.

According to journalist Liam Kennedy, who has been following the takeover saga closely, the former Magpies boss was wanted by the potential owners-in waiting to return to St. James’ Park, as he helped bring them to the table in the first place.

The Latest: Ryder on Benitez

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, North East journalist Ryder has confirmed that Benitez’s potential return to Tyneside was not a stipulation of the takeover deal, meaning that him joining the Toffees will not affect any potential new ownership.

With the arbitration case against the Premier League, this is certainly promising news, as there is still a chance that the bid can be revived if that case goes the way of the Magpies.

The Verdict: Arbitration focus

Given that the potential appointment of Benitez for the Blues will not have any affect on new ownership at St. James’ Park, the sole focus will now be on arbitration.

If the Toon are able to win their case, then the potential takeover could certainly be pushed one step closer to completion – just not with Rafa at the helm.

However, they would still need the top flight to cooperate with them fully, and any deal may be complicated by NUFC’s other focus on the summer transfer window and preparation for the new 2021/22 season.
