Most of the attention in Zimbabwe cricket this last week has been centred on their performances in the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka

John Ward23-Sep-2002Most of the attention in Zimbabwe cricket this last week has been centred on their performances in the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka.CONTENTSInternational cricket:Zimbabwe v IndiaZimbabwe v EnglandAfrica CupProvincial cricket reports – Vigne CupInterviews: Gus Mackay and James McMasterLettersAfter a long break, we hoped the team would be fresh and ready to go, but unfortunately it didn’t work out like that. The engine is running in fits and starts, with the bowling being the most disappointing area. We have seen our team play brilliantly, but apart from a brave run chase against India – led of course by the incomparable Andy Flower – they did not play to the high standards we know they can obtain. Assessments of the matches against India and England are included in this issue. In one way I feel this tournament could have been organized better. That regards the fixture list. Long before the group matches were concluded, Australia and Sri Lanka are in the semi-finals, South Africa are virtually assured of a place, and the only match with any real significance is that between England and India for the remaining semi-final place. That means there are quite a number of meaningless matches, mostly involving the minnows Bangladesh, Kenya and Holland, remaining before the semi-finals start. The crucial matches between the two strongest teams in each group were played early on, when they should have been used as likely deciders, as England v India will be. Perhaps the fixtures were drawn up in this way to stimulate early local interest in the tournament, or perhaps it was done to put less pressure on the likely semi-final teams. Perhaps they just came out of the hat that way.In future, I would suggest that the weakest team in each group – which would include Zimbabwe – get their matches over with early. The likelihood is that the bigger guns will beat them, and each of the final group matches will be in effect a quarterfinal, with a semi-final place dependent on the result. This will sustain interest, which will otherwise be lost in a series of dead matches.Closer to home, this issue includes a report on the Africa Cup competition held in Lusaka recently, after an interview with manager Kish Gokal, and reports on the Vigne Cup and provincial cricket. Gus Mackay, recently appointed general manager of the Mashonaland Cricket Association, talks about his job in a major article. We also include an interview with Australian James McMaster, a strong ZCO supporter, who is visiting Zimbabwe for the first time and has some interesting observations to make.

Pundit says Crystal Palace could still re-sign Gary Cahill

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge hasn’t ruled out Crystal Palace re-signing experienced defender Gary Cahill.

The 35-year-old joined two years ago and has made 47 appearances in all competitions since arriving from London neighbours Chelsea.

The odd few muscle and knee injuries aside, Cahill has generally been a regular starter during his two seasons at Selhurst Park and often wore the captains armband in Luka Milivojevic’s absence.

However, Cahill’s contract expired at the end of last season, meaning he was on course to become a free agent for the second time in three years.

According to The Sun, though, the south London outfit have offered him a contract extension despite already bringing in two centre-backs in Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi from Chelsea.

But Cahill rejected the offer, with his current wages reportedly too expensive for the club.

However Bridge told The Transfer Tavern that a deal to bring the defender back to Selhurst Park remains a possibility:

“I don’t think it’s out of the question. From what I’ve heard, the club are surprised that it’s not actually been signed.

“They’ve bought in the two defenders which is great, but someone like a Cahill, being a leader, maybe not starting all the time, but being a leader from the bench or the training pitch they would love.

“They would like to get him in, but his demands have taken him back a little bit, so it’s a wait and see.”

Positive McCullum remains hopeful

In what was his last innings of the series, a rearguard 71 from Brendon McCullum almost gave New Zealand the belief of producing the unthinkable against England, on the third day of the final Test at Trent Bridge

In what was his last innings of the series, a rearguard 71 from Brendon McCullum almost gave New Zealand the belief of producing the unthinkable against England, on the third day of the final Test at Trent Bridge. Dominating a partnership of 94 with Daniel Flynn, who showed tremendous courage in his 49, the pair nearly saw New Zealand through to stumps before James Anderson bowled McCullum off an inside edge. Now, though, with just five second-innings wickets remaining, still trailing by 64 runs, Flynn and McCullum’s stand appears to have just delayed the inevitable.Flynn has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the last two weeks. An horrific blow to his mouth from an Anderson bouncer at Old Trafford displaced two teeth, requiring visits to hospital and three separate treatments by a dentist. Lesser mortals would have been placed straight on a plane home but, remarkably for such a severe injury, Flynn was desperate to return to the middle. In addition to the obvious bravery he showed, there was no shortage of ability either. Anderson and Stuart Broad repeatedly teased him outside his off stump, but Flynn’s resolve was unwavering, and he drew praise from his senior partner at the end of the day’s play.”Flynny is a tough character and desperately wants to play cricket for New Zealand,” McCullum said. “He’s come back from a horrific injury in a very short space of time, but was very, very keen to get out there right from the word go. So it’s great from his perspective and development that he was able to get out there and contribute like he was able to, in tough conditions like they were.”It was McCullum who dominated the partnership however, giving New Zealand hope – however faint – that, just possibly, they might be able to set England a challenging total. “We put a pretty good partnership [together] which gave us a bit of belief within the team. We’re obviously desperately disappointed to lose both Daniel and myself at the end, but saying that, we’re closer than where we were at the start of the day.”We’re obviously behind the eight-ball, but you’ve always got to have hope. If we can manufacturer a 150 to 180 lead – out of somewhere – then who knows what can happen. We’re definitely still hopeful.”Such confidence is to be expected of New Zealand’s master batsman. Realistically, however, only he – and possibly Ross Taylor had he not fallen for a disappointing 14 – could have turned the match New Zealand’s way today, and McCullum remained philosophical of his 71, despite his obvious disappointment.”I couldn’t keep wicket this game, so had the opportunity to play as just a batsman. I was disappointed not to get runs in the first innings, and also not to still be out there in the second innings today, but it was nice to make some kind of contribution.”As soon as you get that cloud cover, it’s pretty tough out there. I don’t think the wicket has played too much of a part – maybe [in] the first hour of the first day. It’s probably more what the ball’s doing in the air – and with inswing and outswing, it’s pretty tough. They bowled very well in the conditions they have had.”It was disappointing to get out; I’d hoped there might be a bit more reward for the application I was trying to show, but I’ll learn from what went on out there, how I faced with the conditions and changed my game, and hopefully that’ll make me a better player in the future.”

Wainman slams Gallagher after Leeds miss out on signing

Joe Wainman from All Leeds TV has expressed his frustration at Leeds United missing out on the signing of Conor Gallagher to Crystal Palace.

The midfielder has moved on loan to Selhurst Park from Chelsea, with The Guardian reporting that he rejected potential moves to both Leeds and Newcastle United.

The 21-year-old has not actually made his debut for the Blues yet but has gone on a variety of different loan spells.

He has played for Charlton Athletic, Swansea City, and West Bromwich Albion, progressing through the leagues as he went, and has now made the move to south London.

Wainman believes that the fanbase were disappointed with Gallagher’s decision to link up with new Palace boss Patrick Vieira rather than Marcelo Bielsa.

Indeed, he has claimed that Leeds fans wanted to sign the player on a loan deal that included an option to buy, instead of just borrowing him.

He said: “The fanbase seems to be split on this one because a lot of people wanted a loan with a view to a permanent, and obviously Chelsea were only willing to loan him.

“I’m a little bit disappointed that he has chosen Palace and, for me personally, I would question him because I don’t understand why you would choose Palace, and Patrick Vieira.

“I get Patrick Vieira was a great midfielder but as a manager I’m not really sure, the jury’s still out for me on Patrick Vieira. Whereas Conor Gallagher could have come to Leeds United and worked under Bielsa.”
