Serie A expert drops big Boga to Everton claim

Serie A expert Conor Clancy insists that Jeremie Boga would be limited by Rafael Benitez if he decided to move to Everton.

The Toffees have been linked with a potential swoop for the winger this summer, as have Crystal Palace.

Boga has emerged as something of a star during his time with Sassuolo in Serie A, and reports suggest that Atalanta have already tabled a bid worth £15.5m for his signature, though it was rejected.

The 24-year-old, who is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, has made a total of 90 appearances for the club and has scored 18 goals, while also laying on seven assists.

A pacey, tricky winger who can play on the left, in attacking midfield and up front, Boga needs to be able to have the opportunity to play with complete freedom, according to Clancy, who is the editor-in-chief at Forza Italian Football.

Boga, of course, has experience of playing in England, as he came through the ranks at Chelsea, though he made just one senior appearance for the Blues.

Like a number of Chelsea youngsters, he went on a spate of loan spells, playing for French club Rennes, Granada in Spain and fellow English club Birmingham City.

Clancy said: “Maybe Everton might make a little bit more sense but still, under Benitez, he’s going to be a lot more restricted than he would like to be.

“With Sassuolo, he’s basically just told, ‘there’s the ball, go and play’. I think he’s got to go somewhere where that can also happen and I don’t see that from Everton in the Premier League.”

Abada let Ange down vs Alkmaar

Ange Postecoglou led his Celtic side to a fifth consecutive win on Wednesday night as the Hoops beat AZ Alkmaar 2-0 in the Europa League.

Celtic have won their past five competitive matches, scoring 18 goals in the process, and are now in a strong position to qualify for the group stages of the European competition.

Kyogo Furuhashi and James Forrest scored the goals for the Australian’s side, with Tom Rogic and Furuhashi providing the assists. Joe Hart was also able to claim a clean sheet, with his defence helping him to stop Alkmaar from finding the back of the net.

However, it was not all sunshine and rainbows for the Hoops as one player, in particular, struggled to show his quality on the pitch.

Liel Abada was reintroduced to the side after two games on the sidelines due to injury and his lack of sharpness was evident in his performance. The summer signing was the only player in the starting XI to record a FotMob rating lower than 7.1, as he scored 6.6 for his display on the wing.

Delving deeper into his statistics from the game, it is easy to see why he was given such a low score in comparison to his teammates. Per FotMob, Abada lost 100% of his duels on the pitch and only completed three passes in 58 minutes before being taken off, having attempted five overall.

In total, he only had eight touches of the ball and had one shot on goal whilst creating zero chances for his teammates and attempted one cross – unsuccessfully – into the box. This shows that he failed to get himself into the game and was left watching on as his teammates did the business.

Ahead of the game, we published an article urging Postecoglou to throw Abada a bone by unleashing him against Alkmaar following his fitness issues. We pointed to his form in matches earlier this season as a reason behind starting him, with the Australian ultimately agreeing with our suggestion as he picked him against the Dutch side.

However, he let his head coach down with a disastrous display and embarrassed him. As shown by the aforementioned statistic, he was unable to make any positive impact on the game before being hauled off in the second-half. This will have been a disappointment to Postecoglou as the winger did not prove that he was right to put his faith in him for this game, leaving him embarrassed at making the decision to start h

Inter pede Maicosuel em troca de Valdívia. Galo analisa a proposta

Campbell backs Newcastle to sell Hayden

Newcastle United have now been backed to sell Isaac Hayden before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Watford interest

According to Football Insider, Watford have now ‘set their sights’ on signing Hayden, and it is understood that he is ‘keen’ on a move to the Hornets before the window shuts.

A source from Vicarage Road has claimed that they are interested in signing the central midfield player, and a move down south appears to have turned his head.

The Latest: Campbell on Hayden

Speaking to Football Insider, former Everton and Arsenal striker now pundit Kevin Campbell has backed the St. James’ Park faithful to sell Hayden if they got an offer of between £10-12m for him, and claims that they should be letting him go:

“I think it’s difficult to stand in his way if he wants to return down south.

“If they got offered £10-12 million I’m sure they would take it. I think the new contract last year was just to tie him down and reward him for his hard work over the past few years.

“I don’t think it was necessarily with the idea that he could be turned into a £50 million player. I think it was an upgrade for the player.

“I think they should let him go.”

The Verdict: Disagree

The North East club should be looking to keep hold of Hayden before the window closes, especially given that there is just a few days left and therefore there may not be enough time to replace him.

Described as ‘outstanding’ by Tyneside legend Alan Shearer after a very impressive display in their 3-2 home win versus Southampton in the Premier League back in February, Hayden was a big player for the Magpies last campaign as he helped them avoid relegation down to the Championship, winning 5.5 of his duels per match, in addition to averaging 2.2 tackles, 1.9 clearances and 1.8 interceptions per game (Sofascore).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Nonetheless, selling him to a rival in the division in Watford – one who could be competing with the Magpies to avoid that bottom three – would not be good business at all, and so the Toon must try and hold onto him at all costs.

Andrew Symonds has been handed extra responsibility as he aims to work his way back to international cricket, having been named captain of Queensland for a Twenty20 match against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Symonds will be handed the reins for a game in Brisbane on Tuesday even though the Bulls’ full-time leader Chris Simpson will also play.Trevor Barsby, the Queensland coach, said the practice games provided the team – and Symonds – the opportunity to experiment. “These matches against the Knight Riders are a good chance for us to have Andrew Symonds test the water as captain and lead by example on the field,” Barsby said.Symonds made his return to state cricket on the weekend, when he turned out for the Bulls in two Twenty20 fixtures against the Knight Riders. He struggled to have an impact with the bat and scored 2 and 1 in the back-to-back games. However, Symonds’ bowling was useful and he finished with figures of 0 for 8 from four overs in one match and 2 for 24 from three overs in the other. The series of practice matches has allowed Symonds to ease back into cricket following his axing from the Australia squad in Darwin.

Marshall stars in Bengal's victory

Hamish Marshall’s polished half-century, and quick contributions from Rohan Gavaskar and Lance Klusener, propelled the Royal Bengal Tigers to 170 for 4, a match-winning total, in Ahmedabad

The Bulletin by Sriram Veera in Hyderabad19-Oct-2008
ScorecardHamish Marshall’s polished half-century, and quick contributions from Rohan Gavaskar and Lance Klusener, propelled the Royal Bengal Tigers to 170 for 4, a match-winning total, in Ahmedabad. The Mumbai Champs turned in another below-par performance – they were dismissed for 158 – and suffered their third straight loss of the tournament. The feature of Marshall’s innings was that all of his shots, barring a heave to cow corner, were conventional. He hit a couple of sixes over the bowler’s head but, instead of long-handle shots, they were merely an extension of the follow-through.Steve Rixon, a coach in the ICL, had a revealing story to tell about convincing Surrey’s Mark Butcher to play Twenty20. Butcher wasn’t sure he could play this format but, during a net session, Rixon told him to play his shots with a follow through. Much to Butcher’s surprise the ball flew over the cover boundary. That is how Marshall has batted in this tournament: nothing extravagant, just good old cricket but with a pronounced sense of purpose while completing a shot.He lifted Johan Van der Wath, who had another poor day with the ball, and Nathan Astle straight over their heads for a six and pulled Michael Kasprowicz over deep midwicket.Marshall’s test came against Sridhar Iyer, a tall legspinner, and he went down the track to the first ball and lofted it with the turn over extra cover. Iyer shortened his length but got cut to point boundary. Marshall went down the track once again but his lofted shot didn’t clear long-off. It was a neat little innings and it laid the base for the assault from Rohan Gavaskar and Lance Klusener.Prior to this game Klusener had faced only 24 balls for 22 runs with two fours and, surprisingly, no sixes. He hit one today, a monstrous shot over long-on against van der Wath. His high back lift and the powerful swing of his heavy bat fetched Bengal valuable runs. It was Rohan Gavaskar, however, who really turned it on by smashing his first ball from Avinash Yadav over deep midwicket. He found the cover-point boundary thrice against the medium-pacers and his 30 off 12 balls helped achieve a challenging target.Mumbai have been unable to gel as a unit in the tournament and they had another bad day. There was the odd contribution with the bat from Astle and a late charge from van der Wath and Subhojit Paul created some artificial excitement but they never really threatened Bengal. When you are losing consistently even the attacking innings tend to get overlooked. Mumbai’s start to the tournament has been poor but the worrying bit is that they haven’t shown much improvement.
