West Ham dealt Rice blow

Coming after star West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice turned down two new contract offers in the summer, it appears the club have been dealt another potential blow surrounding the player.

The Lowdown: Rice new deal saga…

Reliable outlets like The Evening Standard and The Guardian reported over the summer that Rice snubbed two fresh deal offers at the London Stadium and wished to be informed of any incoming bids.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-2/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Thankfully for manager David Moyes and co, Rice also didn’t try to force any move away and swiftly returned to action with West Ham upon finishing England duty and his personal break.

A silver lining at the end of what was some concerning news then, it appears West Ham may now be dealt another potential Rice blow as a new report emerges.

The Latest: West Ham dealt another potential Rice blow…

As per 90min, the Hammers and Moyes could indeed face a fresh challenge in tying down their star man.

Rice, who started 32 Premier League games for West Ham last season, expects the 2021/2022 campaign to be his last in east London.

While the 22-year-old would be open to signing fresh terms on the condition of a release clause, West Ham’s own rule of not including them in contracts for any of their players means a new deal is ‘unlikely’.

Rice is currently focused on this season with the Irons but has no shortage of suitors, with Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all making their interest known according to this report.

The Verdict: Key player, big money…

Making the joint-most interceptions per 90 on average last season (1.8), the England international is well and truly a key player and West Ham’s unlikelihood of tying him down could come as a blow.

It will certainly be interesting to see if he does in fact move on at the end of this season, but if he keeps performing at such a high level, potential suitors will need to fork out big money.

A £100 million price tag on Rice has been mooted while manager Moyes believes he is worth even more than that, so while fans will of course want to keep their talisman, an offer at or over that price tag would surely be taken under consideration.

Cook counts on experience

If England are looking for some self-belief that they can prosper in the first Test against India despite very little time to acclimatise, they need to look no further than Alastair Cook

If England are looking for some self-belief that they can prosper in the first Test against India despite very little time to acclimatise, they need to look no further than Alastair Cook.In 2006, Cook was summoned from the A-tour of the Caribbean after Marcus Trescothick was forced home by the first bout of his mental illness. Cook, 21 at the time, flew half way round the world and was thrown straight into open the batting in Nagpur. He made 60 in the first innings, a maiden Test century in the second and has never looked back.”The preparation has not been ideal,” Cook said. “But I have been here two years ago, having travelled half way round the world, had just one training session and played. It can be done. You don’t lose your technique overnight, it’s very much a mental battle.”We have been playing since mid-October and have been to West Indies. We have been doing a lot of preparations and the three days in Abu Dhabi have been brilliant.”England’s three-day training camp in the Middle East at least allowed the batsmen a chance to get bat on ball and the bowlers the opportunity to work up a sweat. However, with just two days of preparation in Chennai, the squad could ill-afford the rain that cut into the first training session and is threatening to impact proceedings over the next few days.”It has been very tough and it is probably not the ideal build-up but now we are here and we have a chance to play against a very good side in India,” Cook said. “It is an exciting challenge and we are looking forward to it.”We have to prepare ourselves mentally. What’s happened recently has taken its toll but this side has got behind each other. There have been some very tough decisions individually and we are here to play as a unit.”Cook’s role at the top of the order is especially important because if England want to compete with an in-form India they need to produce big first-innings totals, something that has been a problem recently.During the last home season they only passed 400 once in seven first innings, and the series loss to South Africa was largely down to two poor first-innings displays at Headingley and Edgbaston.”Huge first innings total are important for winning matches on dry wickets in India,” Cook said. “We have been talking as a group and especially in India, we have to make a massive score. If you get your big scores in the first innings, you really set yourself up. We saw that in Nagpur and Mumbai [in 2006]…when we put pressure on the opposition.”England’s decision to resume the tour has been widely applauded, but there has still been a suggestion that the players have been motivated by India’s huge financial clout. Cook, though, insisted that the only consideration among the squad was whether the tour would be safe.”Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their writings,” he said. “We sat down and made decisions as a side through our security adviser and that’s been important. All that other stuff does not affect the players. Our decision-makers decided to come here and play cricket and the issue was security. Everything outside had nothing do with us and we will let other people deal with that.”

Ronaldo could be ruled out of Newcastle clash

Manchester United have suffered a potential setback ahead of their Premier League clash with Newcastle United after it was revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo may not be available to play.

What’s the word?

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner made a dramatic return to his former club in the closing stages of the summer transfer window after flirting with the prospect of joining United’s local rivals Manchester City.

After returning from international duty early due to a yellow card picked up against the Republic of Ireland which saw Ronaldo suspended for his nation’s subsequent World Cup qualifier; the 36-year-old was expected to make his second Red Devils debut over the weekend.

However, according to The Sun, the United fans may have to wait until Tuesday to catch a glimpse of their returning hero as he will have only had one day’s training with his teammates after having to isolate for five days due to Covid regulations.

Solskjaer will be absolutely gutted

The Old Trafford outfit may have picked up a very respectable seven points from a possible nine in the opening weeks of the new Premier League campaign, but unconvincing performances against Southampton and Wolves have left a lot of work to be done.

Therefore, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be absolutely gutted that he may not be able to call upon Ronaldo’s services when the Magpies come to visit on Saturday afternoon.

It’s claimed that after the Norwegian tactician gave fellow summer signing Raphael Varane two weeks to settle into his new surroundings, it’s unlikely that Ronaldo will be thrown into the starting XI after such a short time to adjust.

United’s relatively low-key Champions League group stage clash against BSC Young Boys in midweek has instead been outlined as the date when the Portuguese legend may be seen turning out for the 20-time English champions once again, something everyone associated with the club will be eagerly anticipating.

A ideia agrada à direção do Bernô.

West Ham: Coufal must return vs Utd

West Ham boss David Moyes must bring Vladimir Coufal back into his starting XI this afternoon as the Irons look to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to a fifth straight game.

It won’t be an easy task, however, as they welcome Manchester United to the London Stadium and they’ll have plenty of firepower at their disposal, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes.

The Hammers continued their fine form in 2021/22 during the week, defeating Dinamo Zagreb in their own back garden to kickstart their Europa League group stage debut in impressive fashion.

Moyes rung the changes for the encounter, almost utilising a whole new backline, with Ryan Fredericks and Issa Diop coming back in, whilst Kurt Zouma was handed a debut.

But despite the solid outings from many of his fringe players, the Scotsman must turn back to his usual first-choice options, which means we should see a return for the industrious Vladimir Coufal at right-back.

It remains to be seen who could line-up for the Red Devils on the left but considering the options are between Sancho and Mason Greenwood, the east London outfit will know they will be in for a tricky afternoon against either.

The Czech Republic beast has continued his phenomenal form from his debut campaign last term and sits amongst Moyes’ best-performing players once again.

No other player is averaging more tackles per game (3.3) this season than Coufal, whilst he’s also averaged 1.3 interceptions and one key pass per match, via WhoScored.

According to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, the 29-year-old was “one of the signings of the season.”

“We talk about [Tomas] Soucek, but Coufal whether it’s right wing-back or right full-back at different times, he’s just one of those players that’s 7/10 minimum every time you watch him play. He’s the type of player you’d love to play with him. A manager’s dream, never injured, he’s there week in week out,” he said on Monday Night Football (4th May, 22:24pm).

Whilst Coufal’s current teammate, the Irons club captain Mark Noble, dubbed the £18m-rated defender as a “machine” to ‘That Peter Crouch Podcast’ back in May.

If West Ham are to continue their unbeaten run, then Moyes must turn back to Coufal at right-back. He could well hold the keys to a positive result this afternoon.

Arthur happy to see new faces after long haul

It has been a tough, exhausting and emotional few weeks for the South African squad and the coach Mickey Arthur is pleased they can now they welcome new faces for the limited-overs portion of the tour

It has been a tough, exhausting and emotional few weeks for the South African squad. They came to Australia aiming to become the first team to beat Australia in a Test series at home in 16 years. They achieved their goal with a pair of brilliant come-from-behind victories before the effort took its toll and they narrowly lost the third Test in Sydney. Now there is a new challenge: a limited-overs series of two Twenty20 internationals and five ODIs against Australia. Johan Botha is captaining the side in the absence of Graeme Smith, who flew home to a hero’s welcome during the week, and their starting line-up for the first Twenty20 at the MCG on Sunday features five men who did not take part in the Tests.”Fresh faces at this point of the tour is very good,” the coach Mickey Arthur said. “It’s been a long haul for us. Our guys worked extremely hard through the Test tour, so to get some young faces in just keeps refreshing the squad, which is great. We’ve now closed the book on our Test tour. We see this as another tour for us.”Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Vaughn van Jaarsveld are set to make their international debuts, while Herschelle Gibbs has also returned after completing an alcohol rehabilitation programme. South Africa’s semi-final exit from the World Cup in 2007 led them to focus on Tests for the next two years; now the one-day rebuilding phase has begun as they aim to discover the men who can win them the World Cup in 2011.”There are going to be opportunities for a lot of younger players here and it’s going to be interesting to see how they stand up,” Arthur said. “We probably know we’re not the finished article yet in one-day cricket.”Obviously our goal in one-day cricket is to be that in two years’ time when the World Cup comes about. Two years ago we started with our Test team to get them ready for this tour. We’re sort of two years behind in terms of our one-day side.”Technically South Africa are the No. 2 one-day team in the world, but like Australia’s No. 1 Test ranking, it is more a legacy of previous sides than a reflection of the current outfit. The loss of Charl Langeveldt and Shaun Pollock in the past year has left the squad short of experienced bowlers, and the Test fast men Makhaya Ntini, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel will be rotated this series to keep them fresh for the return Tests in South Africa. It all means a genuine opportunity for Australia to build some momentum against a side that has turned their summer dark and gloomy. Australia are also looking to the next World Cup and their plans do not include Matthew Hayden, who has been dropped, but Arthur believes Australia are more advanced in their one-day arrangements than South Africa.”This is probably their chance of salvaging a little bit out of their summer,” he said. “I think they’re going to come out extremely hard. We’re expecting a huge backlash from them during this series and they have to start as favourites. There’s no doubt about that. They are a little bit further up in their rebuilding phase than we are.”Australia have given Mitchell Johnson, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin time off from the Twenty20 games in Melbourne on Sunday and Brisbane on Tuesday as they aim to manage the workloads of their key men. It is the first time Australia will host two Twenty20s against the same opponent in a summer and Arthur said it was important not to left the shortest format expand too far at international level.”I worry about overkill of Twenty20 cricket with international teams,” he said. “There should be perhaps two Twenty20s a summer with your international teams … and then every two years you play a world championship”That’s perfect for international cricket. I worry that sometimes you might have three ODIs and a five-match Twenty20 series on a tour because of the commercial value. I think that would be wrong.”
