The top TEN ‘best trequartistas’ in Football

Inverted wingers, false 9s and now trequartistas are dominating the modern make up of the game. The rotation of central players has become king to success, with few operating on the flanks as traditional wide attackers. It’s a pass and move game, with quick five yard passes and one or two touches. The creativity in a team can be stretched across a number of positions in the starting XI, but central players are the likely suitors to the role of puppet masters.

The trequartista operates in the advanced role up the pitch, ruling out players like Xavi and Xabi Alonso. Cesc Fabregas is an interesting one: does he fall into a deep-lying category like his earlier days at Arsenal, or is he now an established advanced player? If it’s the latter, then surely he takes up a role as a false 9, thus ruling him out of this list as well. Although, with Fabregas it’s definitely one for debate.

But importantly, the real emergence of these roles in a team has forced the need for a 4-2-3-1 system. Barcelona and Spain do not necessarily play strictly to that formation, but then Barcelona do not strictly adhere to any formation or tactics for a great length in any game. Alexis Sanchez may be found as the most advanced and central player on the pitch, while Lionel Messi is just as likely to take up that position in the next phase of play.

But it’s a formation and a desire to play in this manner that has been adopted by many across Europe and has played a part in the capturing of league titles for a few others. England, Spain, Germany and France all crowned champions who play with the trequartista behind the lone striker, and it’s a formation that looks to be a mainstay in the game.

It encourages a passing game in the centre of the pitch, while those who opt for a more traditional 4-4-2 are seen as living in an age that has no relevance to modern football.

United closing in on £6m deal & Fergie linked with shock move for old boy – Best of MUFC

Honestly, I dread to think about the gruesome state of the United dressing room in the aftermath of their defeat last week at Old Trafford. There is no doubt a fresh paint job will have been required after Sir Alex Ferguson’s fabled ‘hairdryer treatment’ peeled the skin off the walls and even the players for that matter. Performances of that nature are becoming an increasingly distressing regularity for the Red Devils faithful as they were carved open not once, not twice but three times by their North London conquerors. The root of the problem is that they lack a natural leader in Nemanja Vidic’s absence. Someone to set an example, organise, rally the troops and eke out that extra 10 per cent that could prove the difference between victory and defeat. Frankly, the less said about Rio Ferdinand’s astonishing decline the better, while Ryan Giggs is slowly becoming a liability as he creeps towards pension age. This may be an issue that even Ferguson can’t fix.

This week on FFC is the fast paced enviroment of the Premier League proving too much for United and which former defender could be set for a return to Old Trafford?

“It does bother us having to come from behind because we are losing those early goals. It is not nice and it is something that we have to stop because we cannot afford to keep letting teams get a head start on us, especially in the Champions League because it is difficult to win the game anyway. We have to make sure we are more solid and hopefully we can be in future games.” Wayne Rooney wants Man Utd to be ‘tighter’ in the future

Joe Hart confident of City’s European chances

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has stated that although his side have started slowly in this season’s Champions League, they still have the quality to qualify for the knockout rounds.

The Premier League champions were beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid in their opening fixture, before a last-minute Mario Balotelli salvaged a home 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the second game.

Hart, who made some stellar saves to keep his side in contention against Dortmund, does not feel that the pressure is getting to Roberto Mancini’s men.

“Look at my team-mates. You couldn’t have a table big enough to fit all their medals on, so I’m pretty sure it won’t affect them. But we are in with the big boys now and there is no place to hide,” The Telegraph quote Hart as saying.

“We weren’t great against Dortmund. We were a bit open, but we did create chances.

“They are a very good side, though, and how they can be a pot four side in the Champions League just shows what a strong group it is,” he concluded.

City play back-to-back fixtures against Ajax in their next Champions League fixtures.

By Gareth McKnight

Manchester City v Swansea – Match Preview

Manchester City will be hoping to put their midweek horror show in Amsterdam behind them, when they welcome Swansea City to the Ethihad on Saturday evening.

Roberto Mancini bravely took the blame for his side’s poor display in midweek, and will be hoping for three Premier League points to keep the pressure on Chelsea at the top of the table.

Swansea ended their run of five games without a win, by beating Wigan 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium last Saturday.

The result especially came as a relief to Michael Laudrup, who had to quash rumours of dressing room unrest ahead of the fixture.

David Silva will remain absent for Roberto Mancini, as he is still suffering with a hamstring injury.

Pablo Zabaleta, Javi Garcia, Maicon and Jack Rodwell are also absent, while James Milner is suspended following his red card in last weekend’s dramatic win over West Bromwich Albion.

Swansea have no new injury concerns to deal with ahead of the trip to Manchester.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-0 Swansea City

Luis Suarez goal was planned claims Enrique

defender Jose Enrique has revealed he and Luis Suarez had planned the move that resulted in the Uruguayan’s outstanding goal against Newcastle.

Suarez calmly chested down Enrique’s 60-yard pass before rounding Newcastle keeper Tim Krul to equalise in the 1-1 draw at Anfield yesterday.

And the Spanish defender has admitted that he and Suarez had discussed the move before the game and that he was not surprised with the way his team mate finished.

He told Liverpool’s official website: “I spoke with Luis before the game I told him, if you have a chance and see a space behind the Newcastle centre back, just try.

“We tried that and it worked. I know his movement is really, really clever and that he is a great player. The goal was all about the control from Luis. And his finish was 10 out of 10. It was amazing.

“We all know Luis already though, so [the quality of the goal] was no surprise.”

But Enrique also revealed his disappointment at the 1-1 draw, claiming Liverpool deserved to take all three points to make it back-to-back home wins.

“We were disappointed with the result because Newcastle only had two chances to score and one of them was their goal,” he added.

“We deserved to win and we know we have to start to get points. Afterwards the manager told us to try to keep doing what we are doing. And I think we are doing well.

Sam Allardyce delighted with Nolan

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce singled out Kevin Nolan for special praise following their 1-0 Premier League win over Newcastle.

The midfielder got the only goal of the game against his former club, diverting Joey O’Brien’s effort into the net.

Allardyce took time after the game to credit his player’s recent form:

“That’s five he’s got now and the enormity of Kevin’s goal record for us means he’s our top scorer.” He told SkySports.

“Our frontmen are not really scoring at the minute but we’re sharing the goals out.

“And the way he played off Andy is what I liked the most. He really does sustain the attacks by holding the possession up.

“He read the situation well in the box. It’s a tap-in but you’ve got to be there and Kevin always seems to get in the box at the right time.”

The former Bolton and Blackburn coach was also delighted with the performance from his team and the result:

“It’s a fantastic victory for us and a second away win,” Allardyce told Sky Sports. “With Newcastle being one of the top six boys these days after last season it put some pressure on us.

“I said to the lads, it’s a great time to come here as they played midweek on Thursday in Europe and I experienced it myself at Bolton that the hardest game to win is the next one.

“That gave us an opportunity here today and we took the opportunity with both hands.

“It was a great performance and a great three points from us away from home, especially after losing three players through injury. I couldn’t ask any more from the players today.”

West Ham named as highest ranked bidder for Olympic Stadium

have announced that they have been chosen as the LLDC’s Highest-Ranked bidder for the use of the Olympic Stadium.

The Premier League club have made it their number one priority to secure a move to the Olympic Stadium well before it was finished being built for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

And the club’s owners, David Gold and David Sullivan, have always insisted that the move would be in both the club’s and the city’s best interests.

A statement on the West Ham’s official website reads: “West Ham United are extremely pleased to be announced as the Highest-Ranked Bidder to be the anchor concessionaire of the Olympic Stadium –  a decision that guarantees a true and lasting legacy for east London and the best possible outcome for the British taxpayer.

“We commend the LLDC and its Chair, Boris Johnson, for their vision in appointing West Ham as Highest-Ranked Bidder. In doing so, London is well on the way to being able to showcase yet another major destination and visitor attraction in the Olympic Park, further strengthening the capital’s place on the global map.”

The move, which is not expected to happen until at least August 2015, is one that the club feels can not only improve the club’s stature, but can also create employment opportunities within the area.

“We are already working with key strategic partners to ensure that unemployed east Londoners in key target groups will have access to sustainable employment in the Olympic Park via the 700-plus job opportunities that West Ham’s tenancy will create,” West Ham’s vice-chairman Karen Brady says in the statement.

“We guarantee millions of visitors and customers, which will galvanise the Park and act as the catalyst to spark a thriving economy in this part of east London.”

Wag of the Week – Man United ace bags a beauty!

The late great soul singer Sam Cooke was well known for his beautiful voice, but his namesake, glamour model Sam Cooke, is famous for her beautiful eyes and jaw-dropping figure. The Page 3 girl, who has also worked for lads’ mags including FHM, Zoo, Nuts and Loaded is romantically linked with Manchester United’s Chris Smalling.

The Manchester-born model isn’t your typical sexy WAG however, she has brains too. Before her career in semi-nudity kicked off, Cooke – the tastiest Cookie on the planet – was considering a future in Bio-Chemistry, having studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology at college. Luckily for us, and perhaps to the detriment of the field of scientific research, the 27-year-old bombshell decided to enter into The Sun’s ‘Page 3 Idol’ competition, which she won in 2006. Ever since, Cooke has been making the days of men around the world slightly brighter by showing off her goods and wearing skimpy outfits.

I’m sure her bedside manner and companionship made Chris Smalling’s recent recovery from a broken metatarsal bone, which saw him miss the start of the season, much easier and the England and United defender was probably gutted when he had to return to the training ground and swap Nurse Cooke’s tender touch for Sir Alex Ferguson’s hairdryer treatment.

In her spare time, Sam Cooke DJ’s around the world, and has performed in clubs in Malaysia, Egpyt and Ibiza. But for now, lets just concentrate on her modelling work.

Here’s a gallery of the sexy dame’s best photos

Reading keeping tabs on Swansea ace

Reading manager Brian McDermott has hinted that he may be interested in signing Swansea City striker Danny Graham in the January transfer window.

Graham has been in and out of the Swans side this season due to injury and the form of summer signing Michu but could become a key player in Reading’s attempt to stay up.

The former Middlesbrough and Watford striker was an instant success in the Premier League last season under Brendan Rodgers, notching 14 times to be the South Wales club’s top goalscorer.

Reading’s need for goals is clear to see as summer signing Pavel Pogrebnyak has been unable to find his shooting boots, while Jason Roberts, Adam Le Fondre and Noel Hunt have fared no better.

McDermott knows Graham from his time at Carlisle but despite admitting an interest in signing a striker, the Reading boss has not yet made an offer the English forward.

“He’s Swansea’s player and I think there is a bit of interest in him,” McDermott told Goal.com

The 15 ‘Boy Wonders’ who never lived up to their billing

English football is filled with players who were once on the books at Old Trafford, Anfield, The Emirates or a plethora of other Premier League clubs but didn’t quite make the grade, finding themselves kicking the ball around on a League One pitch and wondering how they let it all slip.

Such names like John Bostock, David Bentley, Xisco and more recently Michael Johnson are the most recent examples of youngsters that never lived up to their billing.

Although it is almost expected that 90% of academy youngsters won’t make it to the level expected of them, there are a few notable individuals who were hotly anticipated for greatness, with all the right tools at their disposal, only to surprise everyone by becoming massive flops.

Here is a list of the Top 15 child prodigies who appeared to be destined to become World Class footballers but sadly never made it. Some turned sour over night, many never recovered from serious injury and few were simply never as good as everyone thought they were.

So click on Sonny Pike below and check out the Top 15 child prodigies who never made it!
