Could Man United star’s absence prove a blessing in disguise?

The England national team face two very different types of test this week as they take on Moldova tonight at Wembley before facing Ukraine away on Tuesday in crucial World Cup qualifiers.

Roy Hodgson has targeted ten more points to secure qualification from Group H, but the difficult juxtaposing fixtures will be made even harder without Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, who will miss out on both international encounters after a collision with Phil Jones in training that’s left him with a gory gash down the centre of his forehead.

England will be without their main man, who’s netted eight goals in 11 outings since Hodgson took over as head coach in summer 2012, but his absence could prove a blessing in disguise for the Three Lions.

When it comes to strikers, the England boys are rather short on established international quality. Andy Carroll, Jermain Defoe, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck and Rickie Lambert have all featured in the past year for the former Fulham and Liverpool boss, but none have managed to find the net on a regular enough basis to topple Rooney’s position as the starting XI’s lone centre-forward.

[cat_link cat=”England” type=”tower”]

Not that their performances would necessarily guarantee a spot in the first team; Hodgson sees the United forward as one of a rare few shining stars, and as previously stated, Rooney’s form has been at its most prolific for England under the 66 year old’s management.

Jermain Defoe has netted four times in eight appearances over the last two years, but a start for the Three Lions is an uncommon occurance for the Tottenham man, due to Hodgson’s England ‘Plan A’ being centred around a single striker.

The 31 year-old looks set to miss out again this week as he joins the squad struggling with a calf injury, along with Daniel Sturridge who picked up a knock at the weekend for Liverpool but could feature against Ukraine on Tuesday.

It will give England’s new cult hero Rickie Lambert another chance to impress following his match-winning goal against Scotland in August. The former non-leaguer’s personal story of his rise to the top is captivating and inspiring, and the vast majority of Three Lions fans will be glad to see him starting tonight against Moldova.

Admittedly, the quality of the competition is weak, but this will be a huge test for the 31 year-old. Affairs against international minnows are often lose-lose situations for the England team, with anything less than a hefty thrashing often deemed unacceptable by the English media and the public. But Moldova are no San Marino – they’ve already claimed five points in the current qualifying campaign, and their unique system of paying players in either bonuses or fines depending on results, as explained in the Telegraph by Tony Hawks, will motivate them for the Wembley challenge.

Most likely, they’ll set up shop by camping deep in their own half, and it will be up to Lambert to prove he’s firstly capable dealing with all the pressure involved in England affairs against lesser opposition, and secondly that he’s got the quality to penetrate a defensively-minded XI intensely focused on stopping him from scoring.

The Southampton star showed all the skills to do so last season, netting 15 Premier League goals to finish as the division’s highest scoring Englishman tied with Frank Lampard, but now he has to do it on the international stage where anything less than all three points and a healthy contribution to England’s goal-difference will be viewed as a failed venture.

Moving onto Tuesday night, and it will be Sturridge’s turn to impress if he can recover from his niggling groin complaint. Since arriving at Anfield from Chelsea in January, the 24 year-old has been unstoppable, claiming 13 goals and five assists in 17 Premier League appearances for Liverpool including three in three this season. The striker’s only England goal came against San Marino earlier this year, and the Ukraine encounter strikes the right balance in terms of quality of opposition for Sturridge to make a more noticeable announcement on the world stage.

But just as for Lambert tonight, Sturridge will feel the unique pressure England players are put under by a mixture of high expectations and natural pessimism from Three Lions supporters. If three points against Moldova is a given, a win away to Ukraine is certainly not. Whereas Lambert will simply have to go through the motions to get his quality to tell, his Liverpool counterpart will need to put in a high-octane performance as well as find the net if he’s to be the integral cog in an England victory.

For both men, it’s about proving they have the quality and the mentality to play for England, with one eye on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. But for Roy Hodgson it’s an opportunity to see how the Three Lions play without lynchpin Wayne Rooney. Despite the healthy scoring record, England have fallen flat in vital matches due to a lack of craft and penetration going forward, with Group H fixtures against Ukraine, Poland and Montenegro previously all ending as 1-1 draws.

At the same time, the performances have been laboured and one dimensional; set pieces appear to be the main attacking threat, and trying to keep the ball often proves more trouble than it’s worth for England’s technically limited roster.

To suggest that’s down to Wayne Rooney would be unfair, but Hodgson’s game plan is centred around getting the United striker on the ball as much as possible with mixed results. The 27 year old can produce moments of magic out of nothing, but more often than not, a ball to feet from midfield ends with Rooney being surrounded by two opposing defenders and readily dispossessed. For the Red Devils, he finds space and opens up his body in front of goal, but in an England jersey, he spends the majority of his time facing his own half and rarely gets the chance to penetrate behind the opposition back line.

In typology, Sturridge and Lambert aren’t directly comparable to Wazza Roo and thus Hodgson will be forced into modifying England’s style accordingly. Lambert is direct in physique but comes with unique quality on the ball, whilst Sturridge’s game is filled with flair, close control, pace and lethality in front of goal. Rather than searching for Rooney as often the sole attacking outlet in the final third, both strikers will require a different kind of service from midfield rather than simply passes to feet in the hope the United forward can turn his immediate marker.

And if either forward, or indeed both, prosper significantly in Rooney’s absence, the England boss will need to reconsider how he sets up in future games. Both Lambert and Sturridge’s domestic form is hard to ignore, but proving their worth internationally will make a much stronger case for regular inclusion in the  England starting XI.

Hodgson appears adamant to field either 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 formations, and admittedly, the days of the Three Lions playing in an ill-fated 4-4-2 are well and truly dead. But if another prolific goalscorer emerges for England over the next week, it could see Rooney pushed deeper into a supporting role, similar to how he’s most commonly utilised for Manchester United, which in turn, may provide a different and more creative dynamic going forward.

More than anything, Lambert and Sturridge’s outings this week will highlight to Hodgson that he has other viable options up front than the current one-man attacking game plan if the striking duo produce promising performances. Rather than losing our only established international centre-forward, Rooney’s absence will serve as a blessing in disguise,  and hopefully encourage the England boss to venture away from the Three Lions’ limited one-dimensional style.

Will Rooney’s absence serve as a blessing in disguise?

Revealed: 52% of Liverpool fans want Ayew in to improve their backup options

Liverpool are in the Champions League final and may well win it if they take the chances that Real Madrid will inevitably present but their options off the bench are simply not good enough.

It showed again at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea; Jurgen Klopp does have a small squad and an injury crisis to contend with but he didn’t have the replacements on hand to alter the course of a game that ended up as a 1-0 defeat against last season’s champions.

Buying backups is a tough game to play but the alternative is that the likes of Ben Woodburn have to deputise for Mo Salah and co; which is a far from ideal scenario that places youngsters under extreme pressure at such an early stage of their career.

That’s why we asked you whether Swansea City’s busy forward Jordan Ayew – who could still of course be relegated this season – would be a good fit.

The change England’s U21s need?

Earlier this week the u21 European Championship final was contested between Sweden and Portugal.

It was a game that hardly set the world alight, with the Swedes needing penalties to win after a 0-0 draw after extra time.

This is a tournament where England’s young lions finished bottom of their group. This was in a group with Italy, finalists Portugal and eventual winners Sweden (who we beat 1-0). But despite this, the campaign cannot be seen as anything other than a drab failure.

Little of the blame can be put at Gareth Southgate’s door. Contrary to what he might say about the situation, it is hardly ideal. He is forced to do his job blindfolded, with one arm behind his back whilst hopping on one foot.

Much has been said criticising his tactical choices and lack of game management, but he, like many others, can hardly hold much enthusiasm regarding the u21s’s chance of success in the current state.

Whilst it is often expected, the team is not often filled with the best available talent, with the seniors having hoovered up many stars already.

Many players capped for the senior side see the u21s as a step down. Whilst this is terribly short sighted from privileged young men, club sides must change their attitude on releasing players and should encourage international success at youth level.

Pundit Gary Lineker recently claimed “If clubs try to pull their players, it would be a national disgrace.” With u21s Coach Phil Neville adding “Harry Kane’s development as a player will only be enhanced with u21 involvement. The same could be said of the roll call of eligible players who didn’t travel to the European Championships including; Jack Wilshere, Phil Jones, Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Luke Shaw.

Almost uniquely within Europe, the Premier League has a strangle hold over the top flight which doesn’t enable the National FA to implement changes to improve the national teams.

Often a polarising figure, Joey Barton suggested extended international suspension for those unwilling to represent u21 outside of genuine injury. Although difficult to police, the sentiment is correct. The pride and passion needs to be brought back in representing your national team at all levels. This reluctance is something your average Joe Bloggs will never be able to understand regarding representing your country. Perception must change and realisation needs to occur of the opportunity available to these players to change our psyche for future tournaments.

The U21s should grow up together in tournament football, being able to step up to senior level en mass with 7-8 progressing to the open age side when required rather than just 2 or 3 with their youth careers seen as effectively over.

A winning attitude needs to be nurtured as a group and success as a group with the u21s would only help when stepping up together to the senior side.

FIVE must-sign players for Tottenham on FM13

The aim of any aspiring Tottenham manager on FM13 is to avoid the state of flux Spurs find themselves in on the periphery of the European elite. Utilising the generosity of the infamously prudent Daniel Levy, it is possible to transform the fortunes of the North London club into genuine Premier League title contenders.

Couple the potential fire sale of the likes of Livermore and Huddlestone with Levy’s £35million warchest and you have the potential to be the envy of managers the world over.

It is crucial to maintain the legacy of your predecessor Andre Villas-Boas and the plans he laid out in his tireless fortnight in charge. Therefore, a fluid 4-2-3-1 formation will be used to build around the Welsh wizard Gareth Bale and create a domestic and European dominating outfit.

How Tottenham must line up when they host Watford on Monday

Tottenham Hotspur will look to recover from their FA Cup disappointment and strengthen their grip on their top-four spot in the Premier League when they host Watford at Wembley on Monday night.

Spurs knew they had the opportunity to end a decade drought without a trophy when they faced Manchester United in the semi-final of the famous competition last weekend, but despite Dele Alli giving them an early lead they were eventually beaten 2-1 by Jose Mourinho’s men.

Attention now turns back to the top flight and the north London outfit will be determined to ensure that they now qualify for the Champions League next season, in order for them to give themselves a chance of enjoying more famous European nights at their new stadium.

Mauricio Pochettino will know how important it is that they don’t let their advantage over fifth-placed Chelsea slip in the remaining four fixtures, and he will certainly fancy his side’s chances of overturning the Hornets.

Javi Gracia’s men are in mid-table despite losing 17 of their 35 matches and conceding 60 goals in the process, and they have lost four successive Premier League matches on the road without finding the net.

Pochettino made six changes to the XI that drew 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion previously for the clash against the Red Devils, and he may well be considering making some more alterations in order to keep things fresh.

Here is how Tottenham must line up when they host Watford, ahead of Hugo Lloris in goal…

Pochettino decided to stay loyal to Michel Vorm for the FA Cup semi-final tie after he had played in all of the previous rounds, and he may have considered doing it anyway with Lloris struggling for form in the Premier League in recent weeks.

However, the France international must return between the sticks against Watford, with the back four otherwise staying the same.

Ben Davies didn’t have his best game against the Red Devils, but he should continue at left-back given Danny Rose is injured and there are few other options available.

Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele have been Pochettino’s first-choice pairing in the Premier League and Champions League over the course of the last few months, and while the former impressed against Man United last weekend, the latter was poor on the day – as shown by his awful statistics from the game.

The Argentine boss should consider resting the Belgium international for this one as perhaps the number of games the team has played has caught up with him, and Victor Wanyama should come into the starting XI having replaced him in the 78th minute at Wembley last weekend.

Pochettino went with his first-choice front four of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane against Jose Mourinho’s side, but while Alli got himself on the score-sheet and made a big impact in the first half, the same couldn’t really be said of his attacking teammates.

Eriksen and Kane didn’t look quite right and Son is struggling to replicate the prolific form he was in just a few weeks ago.

As with Dembele, Pochettino should look to take the South Korean out of the spotlight for the visit of Watford, and give Erik Lamela another opportunity to impress alongside Alli, Eriksen and Kane in attack.

Chelsea chief, Newcastle ‘tactician’… Oddest press conferences of the season

Press conferences are usually full of media trained managers and footballers spouting clichéd lines and safe answers. But occasionally, coaches let go and say what they really think, put their foot in it or come out with claims that their own team then let them down on.Here are FIVE of the best from the season just gone for your viewing pleasure, so have a look and vote for your favourite below…

John Carver – Simply the “bestâ€

http://emp.bbc.co.uk/emp/embed/smpEmbed.html?playlist=http%3A%2F%2Fplaylists.bbc.co.uk%2Fsport%2F0%2Ffootball%2F32623289A%2Fplaylist.sxml&title=John%20Carver%3A%20’I’m%20the%20best%20coach%20in%20the%20Premier%20League’&product=sport

Avoided relegation on the final day and barely registered points in double figures during his reign… Sure you are, John!

Brendan Rodgers guarantees effort…

Okay, after this claim Brendan Rodgers’ side went out and beat QPR 2-1, but following that they drew with a Chelsea side who had already won the title and shipped nine goals in Steven Gerrard’s last two games against Crystal Palace and Stoke.

Nigel Pearson in meltdown mode

Too bizarre for words. Just watch and soak up the awkwardness…

LVG has a few too many…

Not strictly a press conference, but Louis van Gaal’s actions at Man United’s end of season awards do were amazing. The Dutchman must have found Fergie’s red wine supply as he cavorted about the stage in hilarious, and tipsy, state.

Jose Mourinho goes all Eric Cantona…

“To those who say we don’t deserve it, in my country we say: ‘The dogs bark and the caravan goes by,'”

Remarkably similar to Cantona’s “seagulls†and “trawlers†quotes… These were Jose Mourinho’s words after his side clinched the title!

Wigan Athletic v Tottenham Hotspur: Match Preview

Now is the time for Wigan to live up to their tag as the Premier League’s escapology specialists. The Latics are currently in the relegation zone, three points from safety, and saw they survival prospects take a hit last weekend as they limped to defeat at West Ham and results went against them. Now its time for Roberto Martinez’s side to begin the process of unlocking the chains and climbing out of the top-flight dunk tank. Replicating the feats of last season won’t be plain sailing in their five remaining games and they have to make home form count after two consecutive losses away from the DW Stadium.

After coming from behind to slay Manchester City last Sunday Tottenham are on a high and can reclaim a position in the top-four with victory in the North West. They are just two points behind Arsenal and have a game in hand on their North London rivals, who go up against newly-crowned champions Manchester United tomorrow. Andre Villas-Boas will have been pleased by his teams second half response against City as they scored three times in seven minutes to earn a much needed win. Wigan, however, are something of a bogey team for Spurs and they’ll be seeking to avenge the 1-0 defeat suffered in the reverse fixture at White Hart Lane earlier in the campaign.

Team News

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez looks set to reinstate winger Jean Beausejour to the starting XI after being forced into a defensive reshuffle following the news that Antolin Alcaraz (hamstring) faces three weeks out.

Aaron Lennon has overcome a knee injury and is back for Tottenham. Also fighting fit are Gareth Bale and Jermaine Defoe after they both made a scoring comeback in the victory over Manchester City. Sandro (knee) and defensive duo Younes Kaboul (thigh) and William Gallas (calf) remain unavailable.

What the managers said…

“The speculation about Real Madrid comes from the coach having speculation all over the world about his exit – Real Madrid are looking for a coach. The fact he made it public that he is looking for an exit has ended up with a lot of speculation. For me it is always an honour but I am completely focused. At the moment I am very, very focused on trying to get another year at one club. The same club!” Andre Villas-Boas insists every ounce of his focus is on Tottenham (Telegraph Sport)

“The players have been very focused on the league. Their performances have been phenomenal. Arguably, the games at Manchester City and West Ham were our two most dominant performances away from home. You shouldn’t just judge football on results. If they want to play in the FA Cup final, that comes through very good performances in the league.” Roberto Martinez adds an incentive for his players to secure Premier League survival (Telegraph Sport)

Player Ratings: Who was Man United’s MOTM vs Tottenham?

Manchester United took a huge step closer towards ending the season with silverware on Saturday, clinching a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in their FA Cup semi-final meeting at Wembley.

It was the Lilywhites who started on the front foot, with Dele Alli breaking the deadlock after just eleven minutes upon connecting with a Christian Eriksen cross.

But the Red Devils grew into the game the longer it went on and hit back midway through the first half, when Paul Pogba tackled Mousa Dembele and picked out Alexis Sanchez with a perfectly weighted cross.

United fans will be delighted to see Jose Mourinho’s star duo, who have suffered plenty of criticism this season, combine so effectively in such an important game.

But 66-cap Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku had a big impact as well, continuously causing problems for Tottenham’s defence and inadvertently assisting the man who got the winner in Ander Herrera, another impressive performer for United at Wembley.

So, United fans, who was your Man of the Match on Saturday? Who impressed and who disappointed? Let us know by voting below and giving each player involved a performance rating out of ten…

The five players Liverpool fans want sold this summer

So Liverpool’s loss to Hull last night all but ended their hopes of finishing in the top four.

A seven point gap between themselves fourth placed Manchester United with just four games remaining means Brendan Rodgers’ side look will have settle for another season in the Europa League next term.

After spending over £100million on new recruits last summer, there’s no other way to dress up Liverpool’s disappointing campaign other than it being a complete and utter failure.

It initially stems from their struggles to adapt to life without Luis Suarez after his move to Barcelona last summer, and the ongoing injury struggles of Daniel Strurridge that has left them extremely short of fire power up front.

So who should get the Anfield axe this summer? We asked Liverpool fans to vote in our poll a couple of days ago, where they could vote players up and down depending on whether they wanted to see the back of them or not.

179 Reds fans took part in the poll and had their say on the player’s they want replaced by the club in the summer. And the results are a tad surprising…

5. Rickie Lambert

Football – Crystal Palace v Liverpool – Barclays Premier League – Selhurst Park – 23/11/14Liverpool’s Rickie Lambert celebrates scoring their first goalMandatory Credit: Action Images / John SibleyLivepicEDITORIAL USE ONLY. Lambert earned a dream move to his boyhood club last summer after rising up from non-League football to become one of the most prolific strikers in England.

But it could be argued that his move to Anfield came a few years too late, not to mention the fact he had some pretty big shoes to fill once Suarez left for sunny Spain.

And just two goals in 21 Premier League outings hasn’t exactly convinced the Anfield faithful that he’s the man to help fire them to a Premier League crown.

107 of the Liverpool fans who took part in the poll want to see the back of him at the end of the campaign, while just 38 reckon he can still offer something positive to their side next season.

4. Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli’s £16million move to Liverpool was supposed to be the signing to fill the void left by Suarez, but instead he’s been more of a hindrance than a help to Brendan Rodgers’ side.

A return of just one goal from 16 Premier League appearances simply isn’t good enough, and the Liverpool fans have clearly had enough of him.

And for most of the season it’s looked as if Balotelli himself isn’t particularly bothered that he hasn’t made an impact at his new club, which obviously adds to the frustration of the Anfield faithful.

112 fans voted for him to be sold this summer, while 35 optimistic supporters reckon he might just come good next season.

3. Brad Jones

There was a point this season when Brad Jones’ Liverpool career was looking positive. The stopper got himself a chance to impress in the first team after Simon Mignolet was dropped for a string of dodgy performances.

But that was short lived after he picked up an injury, which game Mignolet his chance to get his first team spot back and keep it, which he did.

So Jones is simply warming the bench once more, and the fans appear to believe it’s time for him to move on so Rodgers can go out and bring someone else in who is capable of competing for that number one spot and, in all honesty, is good enough to take the number one jersey in the future.

117 fans voted for him to be sold, but 28 Reds fans reckon the club might as well just keep him at the club as a decent back up to Mignolet.

2. Fabio Borini

Fabio Borini’s seven Premier League goals while on loan at Sunderland last season looked to have reignited his career, but he turned down a chance to stay at the Stadium of Light permanently because he wanted the chance to prove himself at Anfield.

But that hasn’t happened and he’s managed just a single goal in 12 Premier League appearances this term, nine of which have been from the bench.

So perhaps Borini’s future does lie away from Liverpool, and 125 fans believe it’s time for him to move on and make way for a player who is a more capable back up to the Reds’ main strikers.

1. Iago Aspas

The Spanish striker signed from Celta in 2013 for about £7million, but hasn’t had much of a chance to live up to that price tag at Anfield.

Last season he managed to make 14 Premier League appearances and failed to score a single goal in the process, which led him to being shipped out on loan to Sevilla last summer.

And he’s only managed to find the net twice in La Liga this season, and has only completed a full 90 minutes on one occasions. That perhaps suggests he’s not the striker Liverpool thought he might develop in to when they signed him, and the Liverpool supporters don’t appear to be too keen on giving him another chance to prove himself.

124 Reds fans want him off the Anfield books, and 22 fans would be happy to see him play for them again next season.

Fergie’s ‘transfer nightmare’ XI at Manchester United

Even the greatest managers fail sometimes and despite all his trophies at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t perfect. For every Eric Cantona, Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy, there’s a whole host of signings that Manchester United fans will try desperately to erase them from memory.

Old Trafford can be an unforgiving place for a player, especially considering the Reds often have to pay over the odds for signings. The pressure can be difficult to handle and individuals often face levels of unwarranted criticism. Rather like Ernst Stavro Blofeld, failure simply isn’t tolerated at Manchester United and that hunger for success has clearly worked, especially seeing as the Reds have overhauled Liverpool’s number of titles.

That feat isn’t thanks to any of the people listed below however, some of whom were so bad, it’s not implausible to suggest they were planted by Liverpool to try and destroy United’s legacy. See what you think of United’s worst XI signings from the Premier League era:
