Arsenal: Elneny may not play this season

Injury expert Ben Dinnery says that Mohamed Elneny may not play for Arsenal again this season after his latest injury setback.

The Lowdown: ‘Significant injury’

Arsenal confirmed last week that the Egypt international has suffered a ‘significant injury’ to his right knee, which will keep him out of action for an ‘extended period of time’.

The north London club did not make it clear exactly how long the 30-year-old will be expected to be sidelined for, but Dinnery has now given a timeline.

The Latest: May not play again this season

Speaking to Football Insider, the injury expert says that Elneny is expected to be out for months rather than weeks, and it is ‘very touch-and-go’ whether he will even feature again this season.

Dinnery said: “It looks as though Elneny is facing a severe injury at Arsenal. We’re certainly talking months on the sidelines instead of weeks with this one. I understand that it is very touch-and-go whether Elneny will even play again this season.

“The arrival of Jorginho in January is a good indicator that Mikel Arteta feels vulnerable and fragile in those positions.

“Arsenal will be very worried about that midfield area, with Thomas Partey not boasting the best injury record either.

“It was a wise move to bring somebody in to just offer cover and quality in case Arsenal are hit with more key injuries.”

The Verdict: Not ideal

If Elneny is believed to be out for the season, as Dinnery has said, then it is certainly not an ideal situation for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal.

It would leave the Spaniard with just two naturally defensively-minded midfielders in his senior squad – one of whom is new signing Jorginho, who will still need time to settle in; and Thomas Partey, who has been prone to injury himself in the past.

With eight appearances in total over all competitions so far this season, including four starts, Elneny has been able to step in when required for the Gunners, but now it looks like they will no longer have that luxury.

Given that injury blow, it has to be questioned why Albert Sambi Lokonga was allowed to go to Crystal Palace on loan, with Arsenal now looking short in midfield.

Crystal Palace: Imagine Ahamada & Doucoure

Crystal Palace have been linked with Naouirou Ahamada recently and the youngster could form a superb partnership with Cheick Doucoure in Patrick Vieira’s midfield.

According to The Athletic‘s Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam, the Eagles are “in discussions” with the Bundesliga club over a deal for the breakout star.

The 20-year-old has established himself as a regular in Bruno Labbadia’s side so far this term, making 17 appearances, in which he has contributed two goals and two assists.

In a recent interview with Football FanCast, journalist Pete O’Rourke shared his thoughts on a potential Palace move for Ahamada and the partnership he could form with summer signing Doucoure.

He said: “On paper, they’re both good midfielders.

“They’ve got good energy, they can provide defensive cover in front of Palace’s back four. They seem to have all the attributes to be the modern-day midfield.

“I’m sure that Patrick Vieira will be hoping that those two players can become Palace’s engine room for the long-term.”

Ahamada was featured on football talent scout Jacek Kulig’s “crazy” list of French U21 players and if he could achieve his obvious potential at Palace, then there seems no reason why he couldn’t be a mainstay alongside Doucoure for a number of years to come.

The Malian, who joined from RC Lens last summer, has started 18 of Palace’s 20 games in the top flight so far this season and boasts an impressive 6.83 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

However, he has often been exposed due to a lack of defensive support in the midfield, with the likes of Jeffrey Schlupp, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise often accompanying him in the middle of the park, despite none of those players being natural central midfielders.

Therefore, it is easy to see why Vieira would want to sign another midfielder this month, especially with James McArthur, Luka Milivojevic and Schlupp all candidates to leave Selhurst Park at the end of the season when their current contracts expire.

The French manager has overseen a youthful transformation of Palace’s squad since taking over from Roy Hodgson in 2021 and Ahamada would be another exciting young option in the middle of the park.

With Doucoure more of a ball-winner, while the Stuttgart star likes to get forward with his preference of dribbling and shooting from range, there seems little reason why they couldn’t be a success together at Crystal Palace for years to come.

Dubravka linked with Leicester swap deal

Journalist Ross Gregory has claimed that it could make sense for Newcastle United to try and pull off a swap deal involving Martin Dubravka.

What’s the word?

At the start of the season, the goalkeeper was loaned out to Manchester United but has returned to the club and is now being linked with a move to Leicester City.

Incidentally, the Magpies have been tipped to make a possible for Foxes midfielder Youri Tielemans this winter. On top of that, James Maddison is another name frequently linked with Newcastle.

With that in mind, it could make sense for the two clubs to try and possibly arrange some kind of swap deal involving Dubravka which could, in theory, leave all parties happy this January.

While talking on NUFC Matters, Gregory proposed the ideas, saying: “If Dubravka is going to go there, or is somebody that they’re interested in and looking to sign, and if Newcastle are keen on a couple of Leicester players, then it would make sense to try and negotiate some sort of deal there.”

He did add, however: “Swap deals and deals involving other players very, very rarely come off in the Premier League.”

Swap deal

At times this season, current Leicester number one Danny Ward has come under criticism and so it wouldn’t be a shock if the Foxes genuinely were in the market for a new goalkeeper.

Over at Newcastle, Nick Pope is the undisputed first-choice pick for Eddie Howe but that doesn’t mean Dubravka is a poor player. After all, he does have 37 clean sheets in 127 Premier League games. So he could be an attractive option for Brendan Rodgers.

And with those rumours linking the Magpies with the likes of Tielemans and Maddison, an opportunity could arise here allowing them to land a target for a cut price with their unwanted goalkeeper heading off in the other direction.

It certainly makes sense on paper but it remains to be seen if such a deal would even be considered.

Spurs: Hojbjerg ran the show vs Brentford

Tottenham Hotspur once again came back from a losing position to secure a point in a 2-2 draw with Brentford on Monday afternoon, a trait that Antonio Conte will undoubtedly be hoping for his side to lose over the remainder of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

Indeed, as has been so often the case so far this season, Spurs found themselves behind heading into the break, with Vitaly Janelt’s 15th-minute strike giving the Bees the lead before Ivan Toney looked to have given his side a fantastic chance of going on to secure their first win over Tottenham since 1948 by doubling their advantage 54 minutes into the match.

However, a 65th-minute Harry Kane header pulled the visitors back into the fixture, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg completed the comeback just six minutes later, with the Denmark international curling a wonderful strike beyond a helpless David Raya between the Brentford sticks on the 71-minute mark.

And, while the north London outfit were unable to go on and find a winner at the Gtech Community Stadium, the performance of Hojbjerg in the middle of the park will undoubtedly have been a huge positive for Conte, as the 27-year-old once again proved himself to be one of the club’s most important players against the Bees.

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch, the £61.5m-rated midfielder was spectacular in possession of the ball, enjoying 89 touches – the most of any player in the match – completing 61 of his 68 attempted passes – a success rate of 90% – and making three key passes, as well as playing two long balls, completing one cross and being successful with two dribbles.

The £100k-per-week midfielder also impressed while doing the dirty work, making three tackles, one interception and two clearances, in addition to winning six of his ten duels – a success rate of 60%.

These metrics saw the 27-year-old average an extremely impressive Sofascore match rating of 7.90 – the highest of any player to feature in the match – while football.london journalist Alasdair Gold also awarded the Dane a joint match-best seven in his own player ratings, in addition to stating of his performance:

“Janelt ghosted in behind him to score for Brentford in the first half. Started the game sluggishly but got better as it wore on and levelled the scores with a perfect curling effort inside the left-hand post.”

As such, considering the fact that Hojbjerg currently ranks as Conte’s third-best performer in the Premier League so far this term, it would indeed appear as if the midfielder is having a “very underrated season” – in the words of journalist Sam Tabuteau – something that the 27-year-old’s match-running display against Brentford only proved further.

Sunderland could sign Ryan Porteous

Sunderland have reportedly been placed on transfer alert as target Ryan Porteous is set to leave Hibernian in the January window.

The Lowdown: January exit…

Porteous is out of contract at Hibs in the summer, meaning that he can leave as a free agent, or sign a pre-contract agreement with a non-Scottish club in January.

As such, manager Lee Johnson, who used to manage at the Stadium of Light, has admitted that the club will sell Porteous in January for the right price.

The Latest: Sunderland target

As per The Northern Echo, the Wearside club’s recruitment team are ‘keen’ to bolster their defensive ranks in January, and are understood to ‘remain interested’ in Porteous, after being ‘heavily linked’ with a move in the summer.

However, he is also ‘expected’ to be a target for fellow Championship rivals Luton Town and Millwall.

Nonetheless, both Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman are ‘keen’ to continue with their policy of recruiting relatively young players who can be developed within the ranks, with Porteous, who does not turn 24 until March, fitting that bill.

The Verdict: No-brainer

Signing a player of Porteous’ quality at his age for a cut-price in January is surely a no-brainer for Tony Mowbray’s side.

Hailed as being a ‘heart-on-sleeve, full-blooded’ type of defender by former Hibs boss John Hughes, the six-foot-two colossus has been their standout performer in the Scottish Premiership so far this term, ranking highly among his team-mates in terms of average aerial duels won, tackles, interceptions, clearances and blocks per match (WhoScored).

A no-nonsense centre-back, Porteous could thrive in the difficult division that is the Championship, and at 23 years of age, he could be a mainstay in the Black Cats’ backline for years to come.

Liverpool are interested in Mikel Merino

Liverpool have been linked with several midfielders over the last few months, and a new update has emerged on one such potential transfer target.

What’s the latest?

According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino is on Jurgen Klopp’s list of potential targets.

As per the report, Galetti claimed that Merino is on a list featuring Piotr Zielinski, Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo as Liverpool attempt to rebuild their midfield in upcoming transfer windows.

Klopp can land his own Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

There is no doubt that Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements in the middle of the park, as many of the midfielders in the squad are either out of contract in the summer or reaching the latter stages of their career.

Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are all entering the last six months of their contracts at Anfield, whilst skipper Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are both into their 30s.

This leaves just Fabinho as the most experienced long-term prospect in the heart of the midfield, with youngsters Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott only now coming into their own in the team.

As a result, the prospective signing of Merino – who has a £50m release clause – could be a great piece of business for the Merseysiders, as he could bring not only some much-needed experience in midfield but a lot of quality as well.

Across 14 La Liga appearances so far this term, the former Newcastle United gem – who was described by Rafael Benitez as “a midfielder with talent” and “very focused” – has scored one goal, delivered six assists and created eight big chances. He has also averaged 1.4 key passes, 2.4 tackles, 2.3 clearances and 7.4 successful duels per game, proving that he is both solid defensively and offers an attacking threat.

Furthermore, Merino ranks in the top 10% of his positional peers across the top five leagues in Europe for touches, clearances and aerial duels won, also ranking in the top 15% for assists.

Klopp could even land his very own Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the Spaniard, as the Lazio star is one of the top ten most comparable midfielders to Merino according to FBref.

The talented duo have had many similarities in their output over the season so far, including assists (6 v 7, Merino first), shots per 90 (1.84 v 1.64), pass completion rate (75.6% v 75.1%), shot-creating actions (41 v 37), interceptions (13 v 14) and blocks (15 v 17).

With that in mind, Merino could be a great asset to the Merseysiders in their pursuit to refresh their midfield over the coming months and may just make the difference needed to get Liverpool back where they belong, competing for Premier League titles at the top of the table.

Rangers must ditch Scott Arfield

When Glasgow Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield signed a one-year contract extension back in May, it was looked upon as a wise move, especially with his experience and big-game mentality.

Fast forward six months and it’s clear that Giovanni van Bronckhorst should have moved him on in the summer and cleared up space for some fresh talent to join the Ibrox side.

What looked like a bit part role, coming on in the last 20 minutes and controlling the game in tight matches was soon changed to starting or playing a key role in the majority of games due to the injury crisis the club is going through.

With Ryan Jack, Tom Lawrence, and Ianis Hagi all out with long-term injuries, Arfield has had a more prominent role the last couple of months, and it has been detrimental to the team’s performance.

He has featured in all 12 Premiership matches so far, averaging a modest SofaScore rating of 6.77 and while he has registered three goal contributions, his overall displays have been poor.

The 34-year-old has managed just 14.5 passes on average, making just 20% of his attempted dribbles and winning just 28% of his total duels, proving that he has been way off the pace, both going forward and defensively.

The £10k-per-week Scot was criticised for his finishing ability against Hearts in October, with Journalist Josh Bunting describing an attempt he had on goal as a “dreadful finish” and that just about summed up his season to date.

If his league performances were a warning sign that he is deteriorating as a force in the Rangers’ starting XI, then his Champions League displays surely must give Van Bronckhorst an easy decision come next summer whether or not to extend his contract.

Arfield has completed zero successful dribbles, loses possession on average nine times per match, and has made just 0.3 key passes, proving that he has been out of his depth on the elite stage this season.

Of course, the Dutchman has had no choice but to play the midfielder due to injuries, however, young talents such as Charlie McCann and Alex Lowry must be given precedence when they are fit and ready to play.

Arfield has been a solid professional during his spell at the Light Blues, however, this will surely be his last campaign for the club.

Newcastle still eyeing Leverkusen’s Diaby

iNews journalist Mark Douglas reports Newcastle United still ‘retain an interest’ in Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby ahead of the January window.

The Lowdown: Summer interest

The St. James’ Park outfit reportedly held an interest in Diaby in the summer, but a move never materialised despite interest from multiple suitors, and he has stayed at Leverkusen.

In 13 appearances so far this season, the winger has managed two goals and four assists over all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: January move?

Writing in his latest piece for iNews, Douglas says that the North East club ‘intend to move again’ for new players in January, after spending over £120m in the summer.

Among the targets that they ‘retain an interest’ in is Diaby, although they are also still looking at Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison, with whom they were also linked with a move for in the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Statement signing

Diaby would certainly be a statement signing if the Tynesiders can pull it off.

Hailed as a player with ‘electrifying pace, good with both feet + fearless on the ball’ by The Chronicle journalist Aaron Stokes, he claims that it would be a ‘remarkable deal’ should Eddie Howe’s side be able to sign him.

Last season, the France international managed a very impressive 17 goals and 14 assists in total across all competitions, mainly playing out wide (Transfermarkt), and at 23 years of age, his ceiling is still so high.

Nonetheless, it would be a real coup if the Magpies were able to sign him and Maddison in 2023.

Rangers had howler over Marcus Gayle

Dick Advocaat brought the good times back at Glasgow Rangers following the demise of the legendary nine-in-a-row side.

The 1998 appointment of the Dutchman gave the Ibrox side a new lease of life, as they embarked on a trophy-laden two-year spell, winning five out of the six domestic trophies available to them.

It all started to unravel in season 2000/2001 however, with Celtic, having appointed Martin O’Neil as their new manager, sweeping the board, and leaving Rangers to lick their wounds.

The Dutchman’s transfer business was also poor that season, with one particular signing proving to be a giant waste of money…

Marcus Gayle proved to be a poor investment

Rangers signed Gayle from Wimbledon for a fee of £1m, a decent sum for a 30-year-old approaching the end of his career.

His arrival in March 2001 meant he only had a few matches left of the season to prove his worth to Advocaat, but the Englishman didn’t exactly get much of a chance.

Having scored 34 goals in the Premier League, there was hope he could shine in Scotland, however, Gayle played just four matches and failed to score in any of them.

As quick as he arrived at the club, the striker was departing, with Watford sealing a deal to bring the Jamaican international back to England for £900k and playing for another 6 years.

It was a strange transfer and there is no doubt if he had been given longer, Gayle would have showcased his goalscoring abilities.

The 52-year-old looks back fondly at his time in Glasgow however, saying:

“I could probably have done with that move two years previously but I cherished the experience I had.”

Who knows what might have happened had he moved while at the peak of his powers back in 1999, but Advocaat made a big howler by bringing him to the club.
