Crystal Palace could sign "electric" £25m ace who’d make Eze even better

It's been a mixed summer for Crystal Palace so far.

They have seen the mercurial Michael Olise leave for Bayern Munich, but they have also seen the likes of Chadi Riad and Daichi Kamada come the other way.

That said, the Eagles' other star commodity, Eberechi Eze, has also been the subject of persistent interest from other Premier League sides, but with the Olise money in the bank, there is a real chance that Oliver Glasner will have access to the talented Englishman next season.

Not only that, but based on recent reports, the Austrian could soon be handed the perfect teammate for the 26-year-old, as recent reports have touted an exciting attacker for a move back to London and, more specifically, to Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace transfer news

According to a report from GIVEMESPORT earlier this week, Crystal Palace are incredibly keen to add Sporting CP star Marcus Edwards to the squad this summer.

Sporting winger Marcus Edwards.

In fact, the report reveals that the Eagles saw an offer of around £13m rejected as the Portuguese giants value the talented attacker at closer to £25m due to the 35% sell-on clause that would be owed to Tottenham Hotspur.

Unfortunately for the South Londoners, the finances are not the only potential obstacle to securing the player's services this summer, as the report has also claimed that Spurs and Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr are keen to sign him.

Former Vitoria star Marcus Edwards.

It could be a complicated and relatively pricey deal to get over the line, but considering how well he has played in Portugal and the potential for him to form a partnership with Eze, it is one worth pursuing.

Why Edwards would be an excellent teammate for Eze

So, with Olise now plying his trade in Germany, much of the team's creative and attacking burden is likely to fall upon Eze's shoulders, but should Glasner get his hands on Edwards in the coming weeks, that might not need to be the case.

It's this ability to chip in and influence proceedings at the sharp end of the pitch that would make the former Spurs gem such a useful teammate for the Palace ace, and based on his last few seasons of football with Sporting, it certainly looks like he'd be able to make a difference.

For example, while last season was his least productive for the Portuguese outfit, he still scored six goals and provided nine assists in 44 appearances, or 2373 minutes, which equates to a goal involvement every 158.2 minutes.

The season prior, he racked up a seriously impressive 26 goals and assists in 51 games or 3604 minutes, and the season before that, it was 18 goals and assists in 2258 minutes, which equates to a goal involvement on average every 138.6 minutes and every 125.4 minutes, respectively.

Now, if the "electric" winger, as dubbed by football presenter Jack Collins, can reproduce even some of his attacking output in South London, then that would take so much pressure off the shoulders of the former Queens Park Rangers star and in turn could then see him deliver more consistently for the club.

Crystal Palace want to sign 22 y/o who matched Eze’s assists last season

Ultimately, if Palace can secure the services of Edwards for around £25m this summer, then that would be a brilliant idea. While he had a slightly lacklustre campaign last season, the last three years are evidence enough that he is a quality attacking player and one who could help get even more out of Eze.

New Zealand and West Indies aim to shake off rust for round two

History in Mount Maunganui promises another run-fest, as the visitors look to keep series afloat

Alagappan Muthu28-Nov-2020Big PictureThe thrill of a fast start. The chaos of a collapse. A fast bowler breathing fire. A T20 maverick standing tall. There were so many good things about the first T20I in Auckland – not least the return of people in the stands and the death of the artificial crowd noise machine, which couldn’t have happened soon enough. But there was also room for improvement. Lockie Ferguson made a point of it in the post-match press conference several times. Barring his vicious spell of 4-0-21-5, the rest of the bowlers took a little while to come to grips with international cricket again. Even someone as skilled as Tim Southee – who’s also the stand-in captain for the first two games – began the day with two wides.Watch the cricket on ESPN+

West Indies were rusty too. Yorkers that turned into beamers were a major cause for their defeat on Friday and Kieron Pollard will be eager to restore his team’s discipline and push the series into a decider. For all the excitement at Eden Park, there may well be something even better at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, as both sets of players work their way back towards peak performance levels. In the spotlightIt wasn’t so long ago that Jimmy Neesham was about to walk away from the game. He batted slowly and bowled too predictably. As a result, he lost his place in the side and was forced on a journey of self-rediscovery. Friends and family and the Wellington players and staff helped him locate his love for cricket again, and now he’s out there making a case to be a limited-overs finisher. New Zealand have often missed that, with senior top-order batsmen like Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor forced to both carry an innings as well as close it out, but now things are changing.Nicholas Pooran fell cheaply to a full toss on leg stump. Sure, it arrived at 150 kph, but he’s supposed to be the crown jewel among the next generation of West Indies batsmen. And those guys are supposed to belt bad balls like that out of the ground. Pooran is no fluke. He is good against pace and spin. He is already a batsman capable of seeing two overs ahead in the game and batting accordingly. And he has all the shots and flair to spare. Chelsea must sell £50m star who earns more than Sesko & Olise combined

Chelsea are wasting no time this summer, with their preparations for next season well underway.

Mauricio Pochettino has already been replaced by Enzo Maresca, and Tosin Adarabioyo is all but confirmed to have become a Blue following a free transfer from Fulham.

New Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca

However, Todd Boehly will have to spend a lot more on his next few targets, with Michael Olise and Benjamin Sesko both highly regarded.

However, the American will also need to axe a few players and there's one that actually earns more than Olise and Sesko combined.

What Chelsea paid for Ben Chilwell

Just like new Chelsea boss Maresca, Ben Chilwell truly made a name for himself at Leicester City before making the switch to Stamford Bridge.

The left-back impressed over his 27 starts in the 2019/20 season, scoring three goals, picking up three assists, and keeping nine clean sheets in the process.

Ben Chiwell Chelsea

That summer, Chelsea came knocking and secured his services for £50m, signing a five-year deal that has since been extended until 2027.

Initially, Chilwell was extremely influential, once again starting 27 Premier League matches in his debut campaign, boasting an increased output of three goals and five assists.

However, he’s unfortunately not progressed much since, with his future now uncertain at the club.

What Ben Chilwell earns at Chelsea

Last season, the England international made just nine starts in the Premier League, with injury issues being a frequent problem.

In total, the left-back missed 30 games across all competitions, and unfortunately, his future role in the starting lineup isn’t guaranteed.

With Maresca being appointed, Chilwell must be fearing for his place in the team, given the Italian’s system doesn’t utilise a left-back in typical fashion.

In possession, the left back often tucks in to form a back three, with the right back inverting into midfield. This means that the 44-year-old often prefers a dynamic centre-back in the position, which suits Levi Colwill perfectly.

With that in mind and given his lack of action last season, it’s difficult to see how Chelsea can continue to justify paying Chilwell £200k-per-week.

This salary makes the 27-year-old Chelsea’s joint-third highest-paid player in the entire squad, only behind Raheem Sterling and Reece James.

For context, this means that the defender earns more than both of Chelsea’s biggest targets combined, with Sesko currently earning £57.9k per week and Olise earning £100k per week.

Chilwell is also the highest-earning left-back in the entire Premier League, excluding Josko Gvardiol, with the next highest being Marc Cucurella at £175k-per-week, who’s also at the Blues.

With injuries being a continuous issue and the system no longer suiting the former Fox, this summer may be the perfect time to recoup some of the £50m once spent on him.

There’s no doubting that when he’s fit, Chilwell is a flying full-back, but even then, he would be behind Cucurella in the pecking order.

Paul Scholes reveals 'massive concern' over Man Utd's capture of Matthijs de Ligt as he labels Bayern Munich & Netherlands star a 'second-rate defender'

Paul Scholes is not a fan of Manchester United target Matthijs de Ligt and labelled the Bayern Munich star as a "second-rate defender".

  • Man Utd set to land De Ligt
  • Will shell out €45 million for the player
  • Scholes not convinced with De Ligt's quality
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United are reportedly close to finalizing a move for De Ligt, with the transfer fee believed to be around €45 million (£38m/$49m) plus an additional €5 million (£4m/$5m) in potential add-ons. The Dutch defender, currently 25 years old, has already built an impressive resume, having played for top European clubs such as Ajax, Juventus, and Bayern Munich. Despite his accolades, Scholes remains unconvinced that De Ligt is the right fit for Manchester United.

    WHAT SCHOLES SAID

Scholes, known for his straightforward opinions, did not hold back in his critique of De Ligt and during a recent discussion on The Overlap Fan Debate, hosted by Sky Bet said: "With Man Utd, we’re talking about players who can’t get into their team. He’s [De Ligt] not playing for them [Bayern], that has to be a big concern, especially when Eric Dier is playing in front of him. That is a massive concern for me."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rising through the ranks at Ajax, he quickly became a standout player, even earning the captain's armband at the tender age of 19 under the guidance of current Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. His performances in Amsterdam caught the attention of Juventus, where he made a high-profile move. Following his stint in Italy, De Ligt transferred to Bayern Munich, further solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s top young defenders.

However, Scholes is concerned that De Ligt's performances at Juventus and Bayern have not lived up to expectations and cautioned against signing players based solely on their past performances under Ten Hag. “You’re bringing in players for £40m, £50m just because he’s played for him [Ten Hag] two or three years ago,” Scholes remarked.

"Juventus got rid of him, he wasn’t good enough there and he obviously hasn’t been good enough at Bayern Munich. He’s coming to us almost like a second-rate defender."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

Despite Scholes' reservations, it is undeniable that United require reinforcements in their defensive line. The club has seen the departure of key defenders Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala, while injuries have plagued the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. The arrival of De Ligt, alongside another potential signing, Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, could help bolster United’s defensive options. The duo’s arrival would add to a growing list of players who have previously thrived under Ten Hag’s leadership, including Lisandro Martinez, Andre Onana, and Antony.
