Opportunity knocks for late T20 World Cup bid amid Australia's mass tour absences

There is no guarantee from Australia’s selectors that all the players who made themselves unavailable for tours of West Indies and Bangladesh will immediately return to the fold for the T20 World Cup if others take the chance to impress in their place.David Warner, Pat Cummins, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis withdrew from contention for the upcoming tours for a variety of personal reasons while Daniel Sams, who contracted Covid-19 in India before the IPL, had previously opted out to manage his mental health.Trevor Hohns, the national selector, reiterated that individual player circumstances were understood and respected at a time where international cricket requires bubbles and quarantine but admitted it was “frustrating” not to be able to have a full squad together with the World Cup four months away.”We are obviously disappointed that they made themselves unavailable, but we totally understand and respect their decision,” Hohns said. “In saying that we also see it as a good opportunity for others who have been included to push their case for inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad. I also see it as a good test of our depth.”If a player wishes to make himself unavailable that’s his prerogative to do so, we can’t force them to go on a tour but what we can say is that they are giving someone else an opportunity.”Related

Australia’s final lead-in to the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to start in mid-October and may yet be moved to the UAE, remains uncertain but there had been plans for a tri-series which would likely clash with the resumption of the IPL. Detailed conversations have yet to take place, but Hohns laid out his expectation of the players’ priorities.”It will certainly depend on their commitments and what we think they should be committing to regarding Australia at that time,” he said. The mass absence has meant recalls for Ben McDermott, Ashton Turner and Dan Christian plus a maiden call-up for Wes Agar. There is also another opportunity for others who were part of the T20 squad in New Zealand such as Josh Philippe and Riley Meredith.Dan Christian is one of the players with a chance to make a late push for the World Cup•Getty Images

Australia’s T20 selection has been disrupted since the start of the last home season due to a combination of biosecure bubble requirements, injuries, resting players, the initial plan for twin tours of South Africa and New Zealand and now the latest withdrawals. However, Hohns said the selectors had most of a likely World Cup squad inked in a few months ago but, while some of those missing will walk straight back in, strong performances in the coming weeks may sway other positions. There is also a likelihood that squads will need to be larger than the traditional 15.”That’ll be an interesting discussion for us going forward, there’s no doubt about that, depending on performances in West Indies particularly by the extra inclusions for this tour,” he said. “So if someone was to really shoot the lights out with bat or ball we’d have to stand up and take notice.”One player not considered for the tour despite the number of missing names was Marnus Labuschagne with the decision taken to allow him to continue his Glamorgan contract. A key part of that was the chance to play a significant amount of T20 cricket rather than being sat on the sidelines on the tour where he may only have featured in the ODIs. He has enjoyed an eye-catching start to the T20 Blast with three consecutive half-centuries, one of which was an unbeaten 93, and handy wickets.”Marnus went over some time ago to play county cricket and he also has the opportunity to play a lot of T20 cricket which is something he expressed to us that he would really like to do,” Hohns said. “He was totally involved in this decision, he thought it was in his best interest to continue to play cricket in England. We are certainly watching his performances in the T20 competition so that’s not gone unnoticed.”

Newcastle hit gold on star worth more than Isak & Gordon in 2024 money

Newcastle United will hope both Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak remain fit and healthy for the duration of the season, as they might be the duo to fire the club back into the Champions League.

So far in the Premier League this season, the pair have scored two of the club’s four goals, as seven points have been picked up from nine.

The recent international break also saw both Isak and Gordon starring for their respective nations. Gordon started both of England’s matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, averaging 1.5 key passes per game, creating a big chance and also succeeding with 50% of his dribble attempts each game.

The winger was also strong in the tackle, winning 70% of his ground duels per game, while making one tackle per game, and he could emerge as a key player over the next few months,

Isak was also in superb form for Sweden. Not only did he score three goals in games against Azerbaijan and Estonia, but the striker averaged 2.5 key passes and succeeded with one dribble per game, enjoying a wonderful international break.

If both players perform like they have over the previous few international games during the clash against Wolves, then the Magpies will surely have three points wrapped up.

How much are Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak worth

The winger and centre-forward have seen both their market valuations rise due to their performances in recent months, becoming two of the highest-valued players at Newcastle.

Indeed, Isak, according to Transfermarkt, is now currently worth €75m (£63.3m), which will only continue to rise as he scores more and more goals for both club and country.

Gordon is now valued at €60m (£50.6m) according to Transfermarkt, and, like Isak, if the Englishman maintains his recent momentum, there is no doubt this valuation will get higher.

Eddie Howe has two excellent players in his squad who will surely begin to attract serious attention sooner rather than later. When the time comes that both of them depart Newcastle, the manager will be aiming to make a substantial profit on the duo.

It wouldn’t be the first time the Magpies have secured a solid return on their initial investment for an attacking player. Nearly 30 years ago, one of the most prolific strikers in their recent history was sold to a league rival – Andy Cole.

Andy Cole’s Newcastle statistics

In February 1993, Newcastle broke their club record by signing Cole from Bristol City, splashing out £1.75m in the process for one of the brightest young centre-forwards in England at the time.

Cole had made just one appearance for City, but Kevin Keegan clearly saw something in the player, and he was spot on.

During the second half of the 1992/93 campaign, Cole scored 12 goals in 12 league games as the Toon secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time, yet this was just the start.

Across 45 matches the following season, the Englishman netted a stunning total of 41 goals, which included 35 in the top flight, and it was clear he was destined for bigger and brighter things.

Another 15 strikes came during the first half of the 1994/95 season, yet he wasn’t quite at the same level as the year before. There were rumours linking Manchester United with the player and Keegan was keen to make a deal, especially considering the profit they would make.

How much Newcastle sold Andy Cole for

Sir Alex Ferguson spent a then British record fee of £6m plus Keith Gilliespie going in the opposite direction to secure the services of Cole at the start of 1995.

It was obviously too good a deal to turn down, despite Cole being one of the best players in the squad. Eventually, the Magpies would sign Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer to soften the blow, but it was clear United had signed a striker who was only keen on winning trophies.

The Toon certainly hit the jackpot on the former England international, especially considering just how much he would be worth in the transfer market today…

Andy Cole’s 2024 market valuation

In 2024, money, however – with Totally Money having adjusted for inflation over the years – this £6m transfer fee would be worth a staggering £122m if he made the same move just now.

This valuation is currently worth more than Isak and Gordon’s values combined, which proves just how much of a profit the club made when they sold Cole to Man United in 1995, clearly hitting the jackpot as they cashed in for a gigantic fee, relative to the time.

Cole enjoyed a stellar career in the Premier League, seeing plenty of success during his spell at Old Trafford between 1995 and 2001.

What Andy Cole did after leaving Newcastle

Although the striker couldn’t power the club to a Premier League and FA Cup double during his first six months at United, the following six and a half seasons saw him win the title five times, the FA Cup twice, and the Champions League in 1999, not a bad haul.

Overall, he netted 121 goals for the club before joining Blackburn Rovers in 2002, where he went on to claim the only trophy he failed to get his hands on at United – the League Cup.

Further spells came at Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth, Birmingham City, Sunderland, and Burnley before he wound down his career with a spell at Nottingham Forest during the 2008/09 season.

The centre-forward enjoyed a career most could only dream of. Howe will be hoping that his two star players at the Magpies will hit heights like Cole did at the club and go on to generate a substantial profit in the process.

The way things are going right now, the pair will certainly move on for lavish fees in the future, no doubt about that.

Howe must drop Joelinton & unleash "gifted" Newcastle star instead

The Magpies could end the weekend in a top-four spot…

Fewer passes than Raya: Arsenal ace just proved he must be dropped v Wolves

Arsenal rounded off their pre-season preparations with a comfortable 2-0 win over Lyon at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

It wasn't the same rip-roaring performance as we saw from the Gunners in their 4-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen a few days ago but there were still plenty of positives for Mikel Arteta to take forward.

The biggest plus point was set pieces. When aren't they? The north Londoners were excellent from corners in 2023/24 and showed they should score plenty more from those scenarios this weekend.

Two Declan Rice corners, headed home by William Saliba and Gabriel won the game for Arteta's side who now just have six days to wait before taking on Wolves in their first Premier League clash of the new campaign.

Another positive was Riccardo Calafiori's first minutes in the red and white of Arsenal, introduced as a second-half substitute for Oleksandr Zinchenko.

So, will the Italian start the opening match of the new season? Given his lack of game time, it seems unlikely. That said, he's not the only one who should probably be expecting to be sat on the bench.

Riccardo Calafiori's cameo vs Lyon

Last week it was announced that Zinchenko was swapping his shirt number to 17. It's not a landmark moment but since then the Ukranian has been brilliant, starring now against both Leverkusen and Lyon.

The left-back cooly found the back of the net in midweek, sliding the ball home from the edge of the area after being teed up by Kai Havertz.

Zinchenko also looked in good order on Sunday, notably winning three of his four duels, completing 90% of his passes and supplying four key passes. Not a bad day at the office indeed.

The former Manchester City man will no doubt have been sweating over his future with the arrival of Calafiori and Jurrien Timber's return from injury but he now looks set to start on the opening weekend against Wolves.

Calafiori will have to bide his time instead. The Italian showed a few neat touches, including one tidy driving run forward in the centre of the pitch.

A centre-back by trade, the former Bologna man will likely play most of his football at left-back and that's where he played on this occasion.

Interestingly enough, it does appear as though it's the entirety of the left-hand side that is up for debate. Will Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard start?

Martinelli's performance in numbers vs Lyon

Since the beginning of last season, Martinelli hasn't particularly been at the races. The Brazilian was in superb order during the 2022/23 campaign, scoring 15 Premier League goals in 36 games.

Yet, in 2023/24, his form took a turn for the worse, scoring just six times in the league. One of the main reasons for that was undoubtedly the rivalry he had with Trossard. The Belgian was a man possessed at points last season and ended the term with 17 strikes to his name, only three fewer than top scorer Bukayo Saka.

So, when Trossard scored a delightful goal against Leverkusen a few days ago, it looked like an uphill battle for Martinelli to start on the opening weekend of the new league season.

That was then confirmed when the Brazilian struggled against Lyon this weekend.

Martinelli was positive in his play, looking to get in behind on a regular basis but his first touch let him down and he struggled to get the ball out of his feet. That was notably the case in the first half. Martin Odegaard slipped a lovely ball in behind for Martinelli but he struggled to power beyond the defender and the chance came to nothing.

It's that lack of decisiveness that Trossard can trump him in and will likely lead to him being given the nod initially next week.

During his 78 minutes on the pitch, the no.11 made just 14 passes, two fewer than goalkeeper David Raya.

In giving away possession on 14 occasions, it meant he lost the ball every 2.5 touches. Yes, Martinelli is direct and a risk-taker but he must learn to keep control of the ball better. That was evidenced further by the fact that he failed with both of his two dribble attempts.

His performance was perhaps best summed up by Football.London's Kaya Kaynak who noted at full-time that the winger was 'still struggling to find his technical quality when running at high speed on a consistent basis.'

That will no doubt be a worry for Arteta and as a consequence, he should lean on Trossard for gameweek one of the Premier League.

Arsenal can reach new level by signing "unstoppable" £84m Martinelli rival

The incredible attacker would be a game-changer for the Gunners.

Latest Leeds transfer news: Farke eyes Norwich raid; PL trio after stars

Football FanCast brings you the latest Leeds United transfer round-up.

With another month to go in the transfer window, Daniel Farke is preparing his side for another season in the Championship after suffering heartbreak in the play-off final. The Whites are already feeling the cost of losing out to Southampton in late May, with Archie Gray departing for big money as Leeds agreed a £30m deal with Tottenham Hotspur.

Joe Rodon and Jayden Bogle have signed to strengthen the backline, though questions remain over the future of star man Crysencio Summerville, among others.

But what are the current rumours? Find all the latest Leeds transfer talk here as they seek to bolster their ranks ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

EFL Championship done deals: Every summer 2024 transfer

Who has made the biggest moves so far in the Championship? Every in and out this summer is listed here.

ByStephan Georgiou Sep 18, 2024 Latest Leeds United transfer rumours Transfers in

Jordan James: Leeds have reportedly "registered their interest" in Birmingham City midfielder Jordan James. James could be a potential replacement for Glen Kamara, who joined Rennes earlier this summer.

However, the Whites face Premier League competition for his signature, though it does appear that the 20-year-old is up for grabs following his current club's relegation from the Championship last season and their subsequent heavy spending.

Ao Tanaka: Reports in Germany have claimed that Fortuna Dusseldorf midfielder Ao Tanaka has seen his price tag lowered by as much as £1m. Fortuna, who joined Leeds in play-off heartache last season, are now thought to be open to selling the Japan international for £2m.

Gabriel Sara: Leeds are among the teams interested in signing Norwich City midfielder Gabriel Sara. The likes of Leicester City and Crystal Palace are also in the mix for the Brazilian, who notched 25 goal involvements in the Championship last term. However, it does not appear that the Canaries are willing to sell.

Farke could land the next Raphinha in Leeds swoop for "magical" gem

Leeds United will look to sign their next Raphinha with this midfield gem joining.

1 ByKelan Sarson Jul 29, 2024

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi: The Whites are also in the running to secure the signature of Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi. Despite their interest, it looks like it will be a tall order for Leeds to pull the move off – there are a number of clubs interested and Southampton have already had a £7m bid rejected. That said, Leeds have received a fair bit of cash so far this summer.

Dejan Ljubicic: Reports in the past week claimed Leeds technical director Gretar Steinsson had travelled to Germany to explore the signing of Koln midfielder Dejan Ljubicic. Koln were relegated from the Bundesliga last season and it is thought that Ljubicic turned down a new deal in order to seal a move away. However, his club had already rejected a £3.4m bid from Leeds prior to Steinsson's visit.

Sammie Szmodics: Leeds have reportedly "formalised their interest" in Championship top scorer Sammie Szmodics in recent days. Also said to be of interest to Premier League new boys Ipswich Town, the Blackburn Rovers star may be tempted to move having only just avoided relegation with the Lancashire side last term.

Leeds could unearth new star duo by landing Szmodics and "ridiculous" star

The Whites have been linked with an interest in both players, who starred in the Championship last season.

ByDan Emery Jul 25, 2024

Anselmo Garcia MacNulty: Leeds are continuing their pursuit of Anselmo Garcia MacNulty, who currently plays for Dutch Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle. The left-back could become a replacement for Junior Firpo, who has long been linked with a summer move, perhaps to former club Real Betis.

Transfers out

Georginio Rutter

Georginio Rutter: Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly preparing a new bid to sign Georginio Rutter this summer. Rutter joined Leeds for a deal worth a potential €40m (£36m) in 2022, and has apparently already been the subject of a £30m bid from the Seagulls, which Daniel Farke's side turned down.

Wilfried Gnonto: Everton could bid as much as £28m for Wilfried Gnonto, according to reports. The Italian has been a target for the Toffees all summer and Leeds have so far been playing hardball over a fee for the forward, who is thought to be keen on a move. The structure of the deal could be the key to breaking a deadlock in talks, with Sean Dyche's side said to be viewing Gnonto as a "priority".

Crysencio Summerville: West Ham United are thought to be leading the race for Crysencio Summerville, but are still some way off Leeds' £35m price demands in talks. It is believed the Hammers have only been happy to offer £20m plus add-ons for the Dutchman, while it looks as though Crystal Palace are heading out of the running as they edge closer to a deal for Ismaila Sarr.

Latest Leeds transfers 2024/25

Leeds defender Joe Rodon.

Plenty of money has come Leeds' way so far, with their squad being taken to pieces as a result of their play-offs failure. However, they have brought in some solid second-tier experience in the shape of Jayden Bogle and Joe Rothwell, with the latter ending last season at Wembley foes Southampton.

Archie Gray remains the standout departure for now, though Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville could yet leave for big money. How Leeds reinvest that money will be key to their promotion charge in the coming season, though there are still several gaps to fill as we head into August.

Shubman Gill taken for scans after blow to left forearm

Shubman Gill, the India opening batsman who copped a blow in his left forearm while fielding at forward short-leg on the third evening, has been taken for a “precautionary scan”, the BCCI confirmed on Tuesday, the fourth morning of the second Test in Chennai. It was the last ball of the 18th over of the England second innings, bowled by R Ashwin, and Dan Lawrence stretched out to get to the pitch of the ball and swept with power. Gill tried to take evasive action at the close-in position but the ball still hit him in his hand.Only one over was bowled on the day after that incident, and the BCCI said via a tweet on Tuesday: “Shubman Gill sustained a blow on his left forearm while fielding on Day 3 of the 2nd Test. He has been taken for a precautionary scan. The BCCI Medical Team is assessing him. He won’t be fielding today.” The fourth day started with England at 53 for 3 chasing 482 for victory, and a 2-0 lead.Gill made his Test debut on the recent tour of Australia, and scored 45, 35*, 50, 31, 7 and 91 in his three Tests there as India won the series 2-1. He finished the series with an impressive average of 51.80, only behind Ravindra Jadeja’s 85.00 and Rishabh Pant’s 68.50 among Indians. Then, in the first Test against England, also in Chennai, Gill scored 29 and 50 even as India lost by 227 runs to fall 1-0 back in the four-Test series, and he had scores of 0 and 14 in the ongoing game.

Spurs in talks to sign £68m England gem who’s similar to Musiala

Tottenham have started their summer transfer window with purpose, acquiring Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray for around £40m, and Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden for £8.5m.

Ange Postecoglou will be happy with the investment so far ahead of the next Premier League season, getting some very promising young midfielders, but attention could now turn to some forward reinforcements, to help the likes of Son Heung-min in the next campaign, spearheading the attack.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Son scored 17 goals in 36 appearances last season for Spurs, with the next-best tally coming from Richarlison, netting 12 goals in his 31 appearances. They were the only two players to get double-digit goal tallies.

Tottenham chasing England international

According to reports from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are seriously considering a move for Crystal Palace star, Eberechi Eze.

It is understood Eze is open to offers, and he has a release clause of £60m plus £8m in add-ons. It's reported that there has been talks with agents to discover the potential terms of a deal.

The reports also state Spurs interest in Rennes winger Desire Doue. However, with his fee possibly being inflated towards that similar £60m fee that Eze would cost, it could deter Tottenham from getting involved.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

The England international could add that extra creative spark in attacking areas for the Lilywhites, with an ability to add goals from open play and set pieces too. The 26-year-old made 31 appearances in all competitions for Palace last season, scoring 11 goals, and providing six assists.

How Eze is similar to Euro 2024 star Jamal Musiala

The players rank as each other's closest "similar player" via FBref's compare feature, and whilst one has been lighting Euro 2024 up, the other has made a few appearances from the bench, but the similarities in their styles of play and best qualities are worth speaking on.

Musiala – once of Chelsea – made 38 appearances in all competitions for Bayern Munich last season, scoring 12 goals, and providing eight assists. The German also started all five of Germany's Euro 2024 games, scoring three goals.

Both players want to be heavily involved in the attacking third, whether it's creating chances for others, or finding space for a shot themselves. Eze only got three fewer G/A for Palace last season, as Musiala got for Bayern, and this was playing in a far worse side.

Both players love to beat their man, taking players on and using their high level of dribbling to create chances and advantages. Eze averages 3.02 successful take-ons per 90, but surprisingly only averages 2.98 progressive carries per 90.

Whilst Musiala averages 4.07 successful take-ons per 90, ranking him in the top 1% of wingers and attacking midfielders in Europe for this metric, but also averages 5.3 progressive carries per 90, nearly double Eze in this stat. Either way, they are both very strong ball carriers who love to make things happen in the final third.

Jamal Musiala

The fact Musiala makes more could well be down to the fact Musiala is playing in a much more ball-dominant team, where teams sit off a bit deeper and progressive carries are important to breaking the lines, whilst Palace for large parts of the season, were hitting teams on the break.

So, by putting Eze in a possession-orientated side, he would get far more frequent chances to carry the ball and get into 1v1 situations, which would see vast improvements in his other metrics, and also his G/A output on a better side.
