  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Dalot is the first of likely United players to welcome Amorim to Old Trafford. The Portuguese full-back appears excited to work with his countryman having been in and out of the team under Ten Hag. Dalot was heavily criticised for missing an open goal in Red Devils' Premier League loss to West Ham last weekend but appears to have already put the incident behind him.

    WHAT DALOT SAID

In an interview with, Dalot said of Amorim: "He's obviously a fantastic coach, young mentality but he knows what he wants. Very demanding, that's what I can expect and I think that's a perfect match for a club like this. The standards are really high. I hope it can be a really good match and I wish for us to win together.

"The Premier League really suits people from Portugal. It's been all over the years that Portuguese managers and players coming to England and being successful, so I really hope it's one more case and I am really excited to start working with him. We are going to be a team. We have to work with each other and we will help him in some ways and I am sure he will help us."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dalot may well benefit from the system Amorim deploys. He favours a three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs, meaning Dalot could slot in as one of the three centre-backs or on the flank. He has played as both a left and right-back under Ten Hag as well as centrally when needed there. His versatility is very likely to suit the new head coach.

WHAT NEXT FOR DALOT & MAN UTD?

Most United players may not meet with their head coach until after the next international break. Although Amorim officially joins on November 11, players like Dalot will be jetting off to represent their countries and will have to get up to speed quickly when they return to face Ipswich on November 24.

Chelsea could now offer 2023 signing in swap deal to sign £60 million Olise

Chelsea could now offer up a player who they only just signed last year in potential swap deal talks for Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

Chelsea make approach to sign Olise alongside Duran

Earlier this week, Enzo Maresca's side kickstarted negotiations to bring young Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran to Stamford Bridge, as widely reported by a multitude of reliable media outlets.

Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea agree another signing amid Duran talks, deal done

The west Londoners are moving quickly.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 13, 2024

Fabrizio Romano says discussions between Chelsea and Villa remain ongoing as they look to shake hands on a deal, but it is believed that the Midlands side want players included in any potential move. Duran wants to make the move to west London, though, and he is apparently prioritising Chelsea over joining other clubs who are also in the race for him (Fabrizio Romano).

As co-Chelsea sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley lead the club's pursuit of transfer targets, they're firmly in the chase for Duran, but it's also been reported that an approach was made for Palace winger Olise this week as well.

Chelsea are said to have contacted Selhurst Park chiefs over the 22-year-old's availability (The Guardian), with his contract including a very complicated £60 million release clause. Reports have suggested that Olise is very keen on making the move to Chelsea, coming after another excellent Premier League season across London.

The attacker, who spent a good portion of last season out injured, resumed the norm upon his return to action. Olise dazzled under new manager Oliver Glasner towards the end of last campaign, helping Palace finish 2023/2024 in very strong fashion.

"He has that killer instinct, he has that arrogance – in the right way – to go about the game," said teammate Joel Ward.

"For such a young talent, he’s got a very wise head on him. He’s very tactically astute, he wants to learn, he wants to develop and you can see that he’s got that desire to go and make things happen. When you need him to grab a game by the scruff of the neck, he does that, and he takes it upon himself to go and be the difference.”

While his deal includes a £60m exit clause, there are murmurs this may not be valid for Chelsea. Indeed, Olise's clause is apparently only valid for sides who qualified for the Champions League next season, so Maresca's men could end up having to pay more.

Chelsea could offer Madueke in swap deal for Olise

As such, the Blues could look for ways to drive his price down, and a player-plus-cash offer is on the cards.

Raheem Sterling has come up in talks between Palace and Chelsea over Olise, but another nominee has emerged in the form of 2023 signing Noni Madueke.

Noni Madueke

That is according to The Guardian and journalist Jacob Steinberg, who claimed on Friday evening that Madueke could be offered to Palace in Chelsea negotiations for Olise this summer.

Chelsea signed the 22-year-old from PSV Eindhoven for around £30 million in January last year, and he's gone on to make 46 appearances in all competitions. In that time, he's racked up nine goals and three assists.

Clement must ditch Rangers "Rolls Royce" after Balogun & Cordoba deals

Glasgow Rangers boss Philippe Clement and head of recruitment Nils Koppen look set for a busy summer of business in the upcoming transfer window.

They have already moved to sign Brazilian left-back Jefte from Fluminense on a permanent deal to bolster their defensive options, and are also closing in on a deal to sign centre-back Jose Cordoba from Levski Sofia.

The Panama international is poised to put pen to paper on a permanent move to Ibrox this week and Clement has also decided to retain veteran defender Leon Balogun, who has signed a one-year contract extension.

Rangers defender Leon Balogun.

This means that Rangers are set to have one more centre-back in their squad next season, with Connor Goldson, John Souttar, and Ben Davies already on the books.

With this in mind, the Belgian head coach must brutally bin young defender Leon King from the squad as he would likely be sent further down the pecking order.

Why Leon King should be ditched this summer

The Daily Record reported ahead of the January window that Clement was prepared to send him out on loan for the second half of the season, as he could not guarantee the youngster game time.

A move did not materialise for the Scotland youth international, though, and he went on to play just three games in all competitions after the turn of the year, two of which came as a starter.

As you can see in the table above, the 20-year-old starlet ended the 2023/24 campaign with just five league appearances under his belt in the Scottish Premiership.

King, who was once described as a "Rolls Royce" by ex-Gers full-back Alan Hutton, is not benefitting from sitting on the bench or in the stands most weeks, rather than playing week-in-week-out at first-team level, as he is not gaining experience on the pitch.

Glasgow Rangers defender Leon King.

This is why Clement must brutally bin the £8k-per-week defender from the squad this summer, whether that is on loan or on a permanent basis, due to the lack of game time facing him next season.

Why Cordoba and Balogun deals are bad news for King

He was below Daves, Balogun, who has just signed a new deal, Souttar, and Balogun already in the pecking order, and may now be behind Cordoba as well.

The new deal for the Nigerian defender could mean that he remains ahead of King, given that the 35-year-old colossus played nine more league matches and almost 900 more minutes in total this season.

Former Rangers defender Leon Balogun.

Meanwhile, it would be odd for Rangers to sign a 22-year-old centre-back, in Cordoba, and not have him in mind to be playing regularly, or at least in the mix to start.

The Panama international played 29 league games for Levski Sofia during the 2023/24 campaign and made 4.4 interceptions per game to go along with an aerial duel success rate of 64%.

Clement can forget all about Sima with Rangers swoop for £3.5m star

The Light Blues are reportedly keen on a deal to sign the “superb” winger this summer.

ByDan Emery May 28, 2024

Meanwhile, King made zero interceptions and lost a staggering 83% of his aerial duels across five appearances in the Premiership this term.

This does not suggest that the Scottish youngster has the quality to step up and play ahead of the new signing, whilst already being behind the other four centre-backs at the club, and that is why Clement must brutally bin him from the team this summer.

Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi among wickets as batsmen continue to struggle

Abid Ali and Azhar Ali again fail to make most of opportunities for time in the middle

ECB Reporters Network26-Jul-2020

Shaheen Shah Afridi celebrates a dismissal•AFP

Pakistan’s frontline pace attack impressed on the third day of the final scheduled intra-squad match at the Incora County Ground in Derby. Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah each took three wickets while Mohammad Abbas bowled throughout the morning and conceded only 20 runs.It was encouraging for the tourists, 10 days out from the first Test against England, although question marks over the batting remain with Abid Ali and captain Azhar Ali failing for a second time in the match. Fawad Alam top scored with 43 for Team White who led by 85 after being bowled out for 198. At the close, Team Green were 133 for 3, 48 in front. After losing all but seven overs of day two, it was a relief for the tourists to see patches of blue sky over the ground when play began on time with Abbas embarking on an unbroken spell of 12 overs. The former Leicestershire fast bowler gave an object lesson in control with his relentless accuracy contributing to the success of Naseem and Afridi. His one wicket came when Alam, who is a candidate for next week’s opening Test, was beaten by a full-length swinging delivery that plucked out middle stump.Abbas was certainly the pick of the attack with Naseem and Afridi both struggling with their line at times although they were better after lunch when the innings quickly folded.Naseem got through the defences of Kashif Bhatti and Usman Shinwari who were both undone by swing while late away movement found the edge of Sohail Khan’s bat. Imran Khan clipped Afridi to short midwicket leaving Imam-ul-Haq, who retired hurt when he was hit on the left hand on day one, unbeaten on 41 from 140 balls which could make a case for his inclusion at Manchester.Certainly openers Abid Ali and Shan Masood have looked far from convincing in this game with both missing out on a big score to cement their place following first-innings failures.Abid, who made one on the first day, faced 42 balls for 16 but in the last over before tea, fell across the crease and was lbw to Faheem Ashraf. Masood was badly dropped at second slip off Sohail on 28, one of a number of catches that have gone down in the cordon in this game, but was bowled by Imran, one away from a half century. That brought together the tourists’ best two batsmen who had both made runs in last week’s warm-up match with Azhar scoring a century and Babar Azam 58. But they had made only 38 between them in this game so it was important they spent time in the middle and both applied themselves after tea. They added 55 in 22 overs with few problems and were close to seeing out the day until Azhar played only half forward to Sohail and was lbw for 28 from 91 balls. At stumps, Azam was unbeaten on 25 and will look to make a significant score on the last day although the forecast is for more rain in Derby on Monday.

Man Utd eyeing "monster" £80m Casemiro upgrade

The lion's share of the Premier League's competitors are done and dusted after the denouement of another thrilling campaign, though Greater Manchester is yet to bow out ahead of the summer's international football.

Indeed, Manchester City will defend their FA Cup title in the final against neighbours Manchester United after beating Erik ten Hag's team in the previous year's trophy decider.

A pretty dour league campaign has left Man United nursing their wounds after finishing eighth and thus failing to qualify for Europe – though defeating Pep Guardiola's winning-machine outfit will provide a glittering route into next season's Europa League.

Manchester United players celebrate

Regardless of the outcome, change is afoot at Old Trafford, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS officials determined to root out the rot at the Theatre of Dreams and bring in some steel and style to lift this prestigious club back to the forefront of the domestic and continental game.

Man United eyeing Premier League star

Where do Manchester United need to improve this summer? It's a good question, and while there are several glaring areas of concern, few would dispute that incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth must strengthen the defence.

And so it's hardly surprising that transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has recently revealed that United are set to be in the market for a centre-half or two this summer, though sorting the future of Ten Hag will take immediate precedence.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Still, according to the respected Italian journalist, Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite is among the players that Man United "like" and could be set for a move in the coming months.

United have been linked with the Toffees star on many occasions over the past year and rumours are starting to hot up, with Football Insider reporting in April that Man United are eager to help ameliorate Everton's financial problems by signing the England international before June's financial deadline.

Sean Dyche's outfit will reportedly demand as much as £80m for their prized possession. Will United pay that much? Perhaps not. But there is every chance that a deal will be struck in the months to come for one of Europe's most exciting young defenders.

Jarrad Branthwaite's season in numbers

Branthwaite, who is 21, enjoyed an impressive loan spell with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, featuring 36 times, and returned to Merseyside with the right set of skills to succeed in the Premier League.

Now hailed as an "absolute monster" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Branthwaite has been a core member of an Everton team that has battled through the thunderous financial turmoil that has stripped eight points from their seasonal Premier League tally to still record a 15th-place finish and yield the best defensive record of any side not finishing in the top-three.

As per FBref, Branthwaite ranks among the top 20% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 17% for interceptions, the top 21% for tackles and the top 18% for aerial duels won per 90. This is a promising core clutch of qualities ahead of a long and expectedly fruitful career in his homeland.

Lofty price tag? Sure. Worth the pursuit? Definitely. Branthwaite is exactly the type of player that INEOS need to target to ensure that United escape from the murky mire that has entrapped the club for many interminable years.

How Jarrad Branthwaite could fit in at Man United

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez would have formed the central defensive axis at Manchester United had they been fit, but alas, both have been consigned to testing terms given respective battles on form and fitness fronts.

Manchester United player Casemiro

United, for all their faults, have been blighted by luckless injury fortunes this season that have seen Casemiro shoehorned into the backline at this late stage of the campaign – something that has led to several horror shows and criticism from Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp, who rather brutally said that he "looks like he's in Soccer Aid".

Branthwaite must be signed to take Man United back to a position of power, especially given that Raphael Varane is poised to depart upon the expiry of his contract next month.

Branthwaite is simply better, at this stage of his career, than United's existing options – Lisandro Martinez, who has endured an injury-ruined campaign, notwithstanding.

More robust, more reliable, more durable, more athletic and active, more organised, more accurate in the duel. Certainly, his impressive metrics for Dyche's side fall down to the system and structure but this doesn't negate Branthwaite's quality: it accentuates it.

Casemiro, it's important to note, has spent most of his season in his natural position in midfield, but he hasn't looked fit or formidable enough to continue at Manchester United if Ratcliffe and co wish for the Theatre to become a place of dreams once more.

The distinguished Brazilian enjoyed a much-improved performance on the Premier League's final day, as United defeated Brighton & Hove Albion, though it remains the case that after a long and illustrious career, this titan of the game might be entering the downward spin toward obscurity.

Branthwaite, conversely, has barely scratched the surface of what promises to be a successful career, and given that the Everton ace has already been praised for his "magnificent" performances by pundit Alan Shearer – who recognises a tough defender when he sees one – he might just be the perfect cog to steel-enforce the new era at Old Trafford.

Farke told to drop anonymous Leeds star who lost 9 duels against Norwich

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has been urged to consider dropping one man for the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final clash with Norwich City on Thursday.

Spoils shared at Carrow Road

In one of the more forgettable Championship play off games, Leeds and Norwich played out a 0-0 draw in Sunday sunshine at Carrow Road, leaving the Yorkshire outfit with a slender advantage heading back home in four days' time.

Leeds waiting to sign £20,000-per-week man as he snubs new contract offer

He’d be a coup.

ByEmilio Galantini May 11, 2024

Heavy favourites to go up going into the play-offs, Farke's side created little but dominated the ball, appearing happy to walk away with the tie still in the balance given their recent run of wretched form.

They have never been promoted through the play-offs in five attempts, and will be hoping that history doesn't repeat itself this time around, given that they were well-placed to secure automatic promotion before their late slump.

But Farke may need to make some tweaks to his side in the home leg to ensure they get past a stubborn Norwich defence, and now he has been urged to drop one player in particular.

Attacker under fire from former Leeds player

That comes in the form of Georginio Rutter, who struggled in the east Anglian sunshine. The Frenchman started the game as a lone striker, but managed just a single shot, and lost 9 of his 15 duels. In his 70 minutes on the pitch, he also managed to complete just six passes, roughly one every 12 minutes. Given that his side saw 60% of the ball across the game, more would have been expected from the Leeds frontman.

Georginio Rutter

Now, Farke has been urged to drop Rutter for the return leg by ex-Leeds defender Jon Newsome, who claimed Joel Piroe made more of an impact from the bench than Rutter managed from the start.

“I hate to say it, but he was really poor today. Nothing stuck. He is that kind of player that really frustrates you, but also has that little sparkle of magic.

“That magic dust has disappeared for the moment and he has been missing for quite a while. Joel Piroe came on, I thought Norwich looked a bit leggy and looked a bit tired, so that gives you an advantage.

“When you have got fresh legs, I think he [Piroe] made more of an impact in the last 20-25 minutes than Rutter had the whole game. Definitely gives Daniel Farke food for Thursday night in his selection.”

Rutter's record this season has been impressive, but the Frenchman's form has suffered along with his side's, and the 22-year-old last found the back of the net in February, a run stretching across 14 starts – though he has grabbed six assists in that time.

With Patrick Bamford's injury set to rule him out of both the upcoming game and any potential final, it will fall on someone else to score the goals to take Leeds up, and Rutter may not be up to the task based on Sunday's showing.

Mohamed Salah labelled a 'miserable so and so' as Liverpool legend suggests £100m Saudi Arabia transfer could go through before summer deadline

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has labelled Mohamed Salah a “miserable so and so” and suggested that a £100m ($128m) transfer could still happen.

Egyptian into final year of contractLinked with move to the Middle EastReds expected to add before deadlineGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The Egyptian superstar has entered the final year of his contract at Anfield. No extension has been agreed as yet, meaning that questions of the 32-year-old’s future are never far away. He was heavily linked with a big-money move to Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2023.

AdvertisementWHAT LAWRENSON SAID

That speculation has continued into the current window, with Lawrenson telling of what the next few weeks could hold for Liverpool talisman Salah: “The Saudi Arabian clubs want younger players and that might be the reason they haven’t gone back for Mo Salah. He likes it at Liverpool, and he’s been excellent so they will want to keep him but if someone did knock on the door and offered £100 million, I think they’d take it, but it would depend on how long is left in the transfer window. He guarantees you goals. He can be a miserable so and so at times, but he guarantees goals.”

Getty THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Salah will continue to make plenty of headlines, Lawrenson believes that new Reds boss Arne Slot could dip back into the transfer market for further reinforcements before the next deadline passes. He added: “I think Liverpool might bring in a couple of players before the transfer window shuts. I'd be surprised if they didn’t. If you’re FSG and you appoint the new manager, you don’t want to just let him work with the old squad. I think they’ll most definitely get a couple and that would be a good thing for the manager so then he's got his own players. The problem for Arne Slot will be if he has a run of three games where he doesn’t get a win, it's the reaction from that. It's massive boots to fill.”

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

Slot is picking up a managerial baton put down by Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool are hoping to successfully bridge one successful era to the next, with their 2024-25 campaign set to get underway away at newly-promoted Ipswich on Saturday.

Arsenal "suddenly stop" negotiations with their £110,000-p/w "top player"

Whilst the attention of much of the Arsenal fanbase will be on the Premier League title race and upcoming Champions League quarter-finals, it appears that negotiations to keep a star player at the club have ground to a halt.

Arsenal braced for busy summer

Stan Kroenke looks set to give heavy backing to Mikel Arteta in the transfer market as the Gunners look to consolidate their recent successes. The big money spent on the likes of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz looks set to continue as Arsenal look to build a squad capable of challenging the likes of Man City and Liverpool.

Arsenal's "world-class" general has made himself as undroppable as Odegaard

The brilliant international has been sensational for the Gunners this season.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 23, 2024

The most prominent link ahead of the summer has been Arsenal's interest in Brentford striker Ivan Toney. The 28-year-old has scored four goals in ten Premier League appearances since returning from a long-term suspension. Also on the Gunners' radar have been midfield reinforcements, with Arsenal reportedly interested in moves for Weston McKennie and Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi.

With the middle of the park an area of the pitch that Arsenal are eager to strengthen, reports of a midfielder edging closer to leaving the club may come as a shock to the Gunners faithful.

Arsenal stop talks over new deal for Jorginho

As relayed by Sport Witness, the Italian press is claiming that negotiations over a new deal for Arsenal midfielder Jorginho have come to a stop. The Italian midfielder had supposedly been offered a new deal until 2025 with a club option of a further year, with his current contract set to expire this summer.

Jorginho-martinelli-arsenal
Jorginho-martinelli-arsenal

The outlet states that "having officially started talks to renew the player’s contract, it’s claimed Arsenal have ‘suddenly stopped’ negotiations," with no clear reason as to why. This development will be music to the ears of Juventus, who have held a long-standing interest in the former Napoli man and are reportedly "waiting for the right moment to present a proposal for the player".

Jorginho has become a surprise success in north Londonm with the 32-year-old joining the Gunners in a £12m move from rivals Chelsea. After being deemed 'too old' for the Premier League by the Blues, the Italian has become a vital part of Arteta's side as they push for the Premier League title.

As a result of Thomas Partey's struggles with injury this season, Jorginho has often been required to step up for his side and start games, a duty he has fulfilled with aplomb. Particular highlights from this campaign have been the midfielder's performances against Liverpool and Newcastle, both of which saw the Italian earn the Man of the Match award.

Speaking after the Newcastle win back in February, Arteta was quick to praise Jorginho, telling the press:

"He’s a top player, especially when the opponents have certain behaviours or [a] certain setup. The way I can imagine the game, he is going to have a big impact. He is certainly [world-class]."

Currently on a reasonably modest £110,000-per-week salary, it should not be a question of finances when it comes to renewing the Italian's deal. Overall, failing to tie Jorginho down to a new contract would see them lose out on an experienced head still capable of putting in quality performances.

Mount swapped Chelsea for Man UtdHad tough, injury-hit debut season at Old TraffordSays team are "ready" for the new campaignWHAT HAPPENED?

Mount swapped Chelsea for United in a £60 million ($76m) transfer last summer but his first campaign at Old Trafford would be a frustrating one; so much so, that he was even linked with a swift exit. Injury and form struggles limited his game time, but now, the 25-year-old appears confident he and the Red Devils can have a far more positive 2024-25 season.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT MASON MOUNT SAID

In his first public interview since his unveiling at United, he told the club's website: "We know what we can do as a group and I think we showed it at the end of last season. We definitely have a group that can win trophies and that's the most important thing. We'll keep trying to do that and stay focused on that goal, because this is Manchester United and we need to set the bar as high as we can and we know how high the bar is. Now it's time for us to perform. But we're ready for it, as I said, and as many trophies as we can get, win as many games as we can. That's our focus throughout the whole group. We're definitely on the same page.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mount was once seen as one of England's brightest rising stars but his form in recent seasons has seen him fall out of favour at Chelsea, flatter to deceive at United, and fail to pick up more England caps. After a £60m move, pressure is on the midfielder, who nearly joined Arsenal or Liverpool instead, and his team to deliver. Whether they can do that this term remains to be seen.
