    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Al-Nassr were without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is enjoying a vacation with his family after Portugal's heartbreaking exit from the quarter-final of Euro 2024. The 39-year-old, personally, had a nightmare outing in the European Championship as for the first time in his career, the star striker failed to score a goal in a major tournament.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Al-Nassr are all set to offer a new lucrative contract to Ronaldo, whose current deal expires next summer. The new contract would see Ronaldo prolonging his career well beyond the age of 40.

    WHAT NEXT FOR AL-NASSR?

Luis Castro's side will be next seen in action on Friday as they take on Portuguese second-tier club Maritimo in another pre-season friendly.

Sunderland eyeing “incredible” promotion winner as big Beale upgrade

Michael Beale's short-lived stint in charge of Sunderland was nothing short of a car-crash to watch, the divisive manager never winning over the Black Cats masses before being put out of his misery just two months into the post.

Picking up just four wins from his 12 matches in charge, Beale couldn't galvanise his youthful troops into ever putting together a positive sequence of results, with a brilliant victory then often followed up a crushing loss.

Now, the assistant manager to Beale in Mike Dodds – who was already at the club before Beale and acted as interim manager when Tony Mowbray exited late last year – will take the reins until the end of the season whilst the Black Cats hierarchy methodically go about finding the perfect long-term boss.

They could well have this name on a list of potential successors to replace the unpopular former Rangers boss, with the out-of-work manager in question even boasting a promotion up to the Premier League on his CV…

Sunderland's plans for the summer

Dodds occupying the Stadium of Light dug-out for the remainder of the campaign gives the Black Cats ample time to find the best possible Beale successor, with a few names already being talked up.

TEAMtalk are reporting that the likes of left-field choice Marek Papszun and ex-Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom are potential targets when the vacancy opens back up in the summer, but one name really sticks out from the speculated pack.

Steve Cooper is being touted to take over at the Wearside club, according to the report, with the ex-Nottingham Forest figure still searching for a new job after being let go of at the City Ground at the end of 2023.

With Cooper's expertise at second tier level clear for all to see – helping Forest return to the top flight via the playoffs during the 2021-22 campaign – it could well also be his glowing track record at developing youngsters whilst managing England U17s that further makes him perfect for the gig.

Regardless of all this being stacked in his favour, the Welshman, most importantly, would be a major upgrade on the outgoing Beale.

Steve Cooper's managerial record

Cooper, unlike Beale, has managed to be arguably successful wherever he's gone across his managerial career to date – with Beale notably earning sack at former club Rangers, prior to his dismal short stint at Sunderland.

Whilst managing the England U16s and U17s, Cooper managed to steer those youthful international England groups at his disposal to success – managing the U17s to World Cup glory in 2017, with Phil Foden and Marc Guehi excelling as teenage stars in the set-up amongst other now household names.

That would be music to the ears of Sunderland, with the Wearside outfit brimming full of exciting young talents currently such as Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg.

Never quite managing to win promotion with Swansea City whilst in charge of the Welsh side, Cooper learnt from those experiences with the Swans and immortalised himself into Forest folklore in his next job when helping the sleeping giants leap back up to the Premier League.

Cooper was responsible for Brennan Johnson coming through at Forest and dazzling, whilst also managing to get the best out of Djed Spence who has never looked the same since his blistering days at the City Ground on loan.

Not one for jumping ship quickly either, Cooper – who was once described as being an "incredible" manager by former West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce on his No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast – does seem to fit the bill of what Sunderland could be looking for in a lasting manager after Dodds' temporary time in charge is up.

Dodds could even throw his hat into the ring for the permanent job if he succeeds in the hot seat, with Sunderland just aiming to get the fans back on side now after such a topsy-turvy season.

    WHAT TORRES SAID

Yamal, who continues to break records at his first senior tournament, has been catching the eye, with Torres telling of his history-making team-mate: “He should be banned. What this kid is doing at 16 years of age!”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Torres added on the reports that Spain could be fined for fielding Yamal in any game that goes beyond 11pm local time, with German labour laws preventing those under the age of 18 from working at such times: “I’ll report him to the police after 14 July. Let him help us win it first. I didn’t know that; I’m going to go and tell him now, wind him up: there’s a joke to be played here. Off the pitch, we spend all day, all together: there aren’t groups. I play darts. I learned in Manchester with Phil Foden and all that lot. I’m not bad, but not as good as them: they’ve been playing years; in the pub with the beer.”

Spain are a happy camp at present, with Torres adding on collective desire to get over the line by any means possible: “I don’t watch a lot of football normally but at the Euros I am because they are opponents we could face. We watched Georgia against Portugal. We beat Georgia 7-1 and 3-1 in qualification but those results are a bit false and things change now. The group is finished. We can expect anything. And we’re going to take it game by game. If we get to the 90th minute against Georgia and we’ve won then OK. Now you just have to win, any way you can. God willing on 15 July everyone everywhere says we played like shit and won it.”

Liverpool struck gold with Anfield star who was sold for a 1,618% profit

Despite the wealth of riches on the line, this is the season that no Liverpool supporter wants to see reach its culmination, with iconic manager Jurgen Klopp set to leave his post by summer.

First place in the Premier League and in with a first chance for silverware next week when Chelsea are met at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final, Liverpool are in a fine position to give the German a glittering send-off come summer.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

After completing the 2022/23 campaign with no major honours to augment the trophy cabinet and a fifth-placed league finish to sever hopes of competing in the Champions League, Klopp made sweeping transfer changes to revive his squad and has now charted a course toward success.

But years of unrelenting action seem to have taken their toll, with the 56-year-old admitting that he is "running out of energy" in January as he announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season.

While the declaration has come as an acute shock – Klopp signed a new long-term contract less than one year ago – Liverpool will be confident that the squad can continue its journey over the coming years, a new manager taking the reins after Klopp crafted a brilliant team that won silverware from every angle.

Where did it all start? Klopp's appointment back in 2015 is the obvious answer. But there is no questioning that the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona had the ultimate transformative effect that turned an exciting project into the assembling of a super team.

Liverpool's signing of Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool cashed in lucratively on Coutinho but first they had to mould him into one of the most thrilling midfielders in the Premier League, landing him from Inter Milan for just £8.5m back in January 2013.

An agile attacking midfielder with a mean shot and an artist's vision, he had all the trappings of a first-rate phenom, indeed rising to the fore and thriving as the lynchpin for Liverpool in the days before Klopp's reign and the early terms of his dynasty, still yet to breathe its last.

Coutinho would conclude his time on Merseyside without silverware but having won over the Liverpool support across 201 appearances, posting 54 goals and 45 assists, with his exploits leading past Liverpool star Lucas Leiva to describe him as a "magician", an apt description for such wizardry on the pitch.

Klopp might not have wanted to sell his central creative cog but Coutinho had handed in a transfer request in August 2017 with Barcelona in pursuit of a deal, and while this was initially rejected, Klopp and co acquiesced at the campaign's midpoint in what shaped Liverpool's recent history. Perhaps more so than any other one transfer.

How much Liverpool sold Coutinho for

Coutinho's transfer request was rather damning, signalling the 5 foot 8 gem's desire to leave at a time when Klopp's project was really taking off. Barcelona might have been rebuffed initially but this was not a situation that would go away.

And despite a brilliant start to the 2017/18 season, with Liverpool wreaking devastation through some delightful offensive synergy – Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah supplemented by Coutinho's spark – his head was turned and that was that.

On Monday, 8 January 2018, Barcelona secured Coutinho's signature from Liverpool in a jaw-dropping £146m deal, making him one of the most expensive players in history.

Consider the paltry fee that Liverpool paid for Coutinho's services, consider his impact throughout the maiden days of Klopp's reign, and consider the benefits that were found from his sale, facilitating the additions of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk.

The recuperation is actually marked by an incredible 1618% profit margin; truly seismic in Liverpool's narrative under Klopp's stewardship. The success simply would not have reached the same lofty heights without this transfer.

Coutinho's market value through the years

Barcelona's mammoth acquisition was ludicrously high, few would dispute that, but there was widespread belief that the Spanish outfit had got their hands on one of Europe's superlative playmakers, his displays for Liverpool leading manager-at-the-time Brendan Rodgers to hail him as a "sensational" player capable of producing "phenomenal" moments.

It's startling to think that the dynamo has plummeted so drastically in recent years, with the table below portraying the depreciation that has sunk him into obscurity.

Of course, Coutinho has certainly had his fair share of success during his post-Liverpool career, notably winning two La Liga titles in Catalonia and completing a stunning treble on loan with Bayern Munich in 2019/20, contributing with a healthy return of 11 goals and nine assists in all competitions.

But his influence has waned as his career has progressed and injuries ruined his return to Barcelona, with the 2021/22 campaign's midpoint presenting the opportunity to rekindle his prowess on English shores, joining Aston Villa on loan in January 2022 and completing a permanent transfer for £17m in May.

Despite some bright moments in the midlands, incessant injuries hindered his football and Coutinho was unable to sustain his elegant and creative performances, with the Brazil international joining Qatari team Al-Duhail on a season-long loan back in September.

Former Liverpool player Philippe Coutinho.

It's hard to imagine that many Liverpool fans at all would speak of regret that Coutinho was sold to Barcelona, paving the stones of prosperity for Klopp and his expertly crafted team to head toward success unseen in decades at Anfield.

It facilitated an era of illustrious heights and restored Liverpool football club as a superpower on the continental scene, and while Klopp is approaching the westering sun of his tenure, the framework is intact to keep the system purring for many campaigns to come.

Wolves could sign "electric" Cunha partner in January

Wolverhampton Wanderers won't want to add too many bodies into the building this transfer window, Gary O'Neil more than content with the fortunes of his Old Gold squad currently.

The West Midlands side let a number of first-teamers leave in the summer such as Ruben Neves and Nathan Collins but have pushed on regardless, a revitalised and fresh Wolves side 11th in the current Premier League standings after a barnstorming 3-0 win over Everton last game rounded off an up-and-down 2023.

Still, to help key figures such as Matheus Cunha continue to impress and play their part in Wolves defying expectations, an addition here and there wouldn't go amiss into the tight-knit group.

O'Neil could well look to this former Watford man as a possible incoming through the door, the West Midlands-based club linked with exciting winger Ismaila Sarr who was a constant nuisance going forward whilst with the Hornets.

Wolves transfer latest – going in for Sarr

According to reports, via TEAMtalk, last month indicated that Wolves were keen on bringing Sarr back to England, the Senegalese forward currently on the books at Olympique Marseille.

He might not be sticking around in France for much long however if rumours are correct, the Old Gold prepared to battle with Fulham this month – who are also interested – to try and win Sarr's services.

The current Marseille man wouldn't be a cheap buy though, Sarr joining the Ligue 1 club for a fee of £15.5m from Vicarage Road.

Sarr could well fancy a return to familiar territory in the Premier League after a poor spell with Marseille to date, with Wolves gaining another skilful forward in the process who could be a joy to watch alongside Cunha if signed.

Ismaila Sarr's style of play

The senior Senegal international garnered a reputation as being a tricky, daring attacker during a celebrated four-season stay with the Hertfordshire-based outfit where he played 50 times in the top flight.

He wasn't all tricks and flicks with no end product though, a dependable scorer of goals for the Hornets.

ismaila-sarr-transfer-gossip-watford-everton-dyche-arnaut-danjuma

Sarr would amass 34 goals in total for Watford before departing the club last year for pastures new, where the goals have dried up now with just four managed this campaign for his new French employers.

At one point in time, Sarr was even linked with a move to Manchester United away from Hertfordshire at the peak of his powers – described by football journalist Rob Blanchette as "electric" when quizzed in 2020 about this prospective transfer deal.

The ex-Watford fan favourite could give Wolves another dangerous option going forward away from the calm and measured approach of Pablo Sarabia, an exhilarating and off-your-seat style attacker purchased to match Pedro Neto already at Molineux.

But, with Neto still nursing a hamstring knock and not near regular first-team minutes as of yet, Sarr could come into the team and become a dream partner going forward for Cunha.

This would see Sarr take on an attacking midfield role just behind Hwang as opposed to roaming freely down the channels, but Sarr has played centrally before in his career – scoring six of his 34 strikes for Watford as an out-and-out centre forward.

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

Cunha and Sarr could complement each other well, Sarr the more potent and goal-hungry forward out of the two arguably whilst Cunha is the more aggressive and creative option further back attempting to make things happen – the Brazilian Wolves man averaging 2.94 progressive carries over the last year per 90 minutes according to FBRef.

In contrast, Sarr is more poacher-like in his play with 6.08 touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 minutes over the same time period.

O'Neil will just want his Wolves team to continue growing in confidence regardless of who is picked to play or who is signed this month, but Sarr looks like he'd be a worthwhile signing to make to strengthen the Old Gold without causing major disruption.

Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer fifties guide Delhi Capitals to rare home win

Measured half-centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer helped Delhi Capitals to a five-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab at Feroz Shah Kotla. Victory meant Capitals now have two wins from five matches at home, and are joint-second with Mumbai Indians – both teams having six wins from ten matches – on the points table.

Ashwin penalised for slow over-rate

The IPL has slapped a fine of INR 12 lakh on Kings XI Punjab captain R Ashwin after finding that his team was slow to finish their overs in the game against Delhi Capitals at Feroz Shah Kotla. This is Kings XI’s first such offense for the season.

Chasing 164, Dhawan and Iyer set the platform by adding 92 off 62 balls for the second wicket. But once Dhawan fell, Capitals slipped from needing 28 off 24 to needing six off the last over with five wickets in hand. Iyer though held his nerve and hit the winning boundary off Sam Curran with two balls to spare.Earlier, Chris Gayle’s 69 off 37 – studded with six fours and five sixes – gave Kings XI a breezy start and took them to 50 for 2 at the end of the Powerplay. But KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and David Miller managed just 21 off 23 between them, and once Gayle was dismissed, and Mandeep Singh failed to step up, Kings XI had to settle for 163 for 7.Shikhar Dhawan pulls the ball•BCCI

Gayle tees off for Kings XIRahul hit Sandeep Lamichhane for a six and a four off the first and third balls of the second over before the legspinner had him stumped the next ball. At 15 for 1 after 2.3 overs, it looked like Kings XI were in for one of those slow starts before Gayle stepped up. And did he step up.The opener glided the third ball he faced, off Ishant Sharma, past short third man for four before launching the next over long-on for a 101-metre six. In the next over, he smashed Lamichhane for four fours, including the one that burst through the bowler’s hands en route to the straight boundary.Overs five to eight though produced just 24 runs, including Agarwal’s wicket, before Gayle got stuck into Amit Mishra. A juicy full toss and rank short one, both were smoked over deep midwicket, with Gayle bringing up his half-century – off just 25 balls – on the way. As a result, Kings XI raced to 92 at the halfway mark despite losing three wickets.Lamichhane’s wrong’uns prove to be the right wayAfter conceding 27 from his first two overs, both bowled inside the Powerplay, Lamichhane returned to bowl the 13th over the innings. And it looked like the youngster was in for another pasting as Gayle slog-swept the first ball of the over for another six. Gayle tried to repeat the act the next ball, a googly bowled from well behind the bowling crease, but mistimed the pull towards deep midwicket. Colin Ingram leapt to catch the ball before throwing it – off balance – to Axar Patel at wide long-on who completed the dismissal.Four balls later, another wrong’un accounted for Curran who lobbed it back towards the bowler for a much easier chance, and suddenly Kings XI were 106 for 5 in 13 overs. With Mandeep struggling despite a couple of good hits over extra cover, the visitors could collect only 71 from the last ten overs.Dhawan, Iyer lay the foundationCapitals lost Prithvi Shaw early in their chase, courtesy a direct-hit from Mandeep, but Dhawan and Iyer got together and took control of the chase. After Shaw’s dismissal, Dhawan collected two successive fours off Hardus Viljoen before launching debutant Harpreet Brar’s first delivery for a straight six. In the same over, Iyer smashed two more fours to bring up the teams’ fifty in five overs. While there were a couple of streaky boundaries, both batsmen looked at ease during their stay. Dhawan brought up his fifty off 36 balls, and when Viljoen dismissed him, Kings XI needed 48 off 39 with eight wickets in hand.Pant didn’t last long, but Colin Ingram helped bring down the equation to ten needed from the last two overs. While Capitals lost Ingram and Axar off successive balls in the penultimate over, Iyer kept his calm and saw the side home.Dew, Capitals’ 12th manAt the toss, both Iyer and R Ashwin said they wanted to bowl first, citing dew later on as the reason. How difficult it could be bowling with the wet ball was evident during the second half of the match. And the fact that Kings XI had three spinners in their attack didn’t help either. M Ashwin, in particular, found it hard to grip the ball, one of his deliveries rolling out along the turf, whereas Curran ended up bowling a beamer. With not too much to defend, dew made the Kings XI bowlers’ task even more challenging.

Talks with Tuchel break downHunt for new Bayern boss restartsDe Zerbi linked againWHAT HAPPENED?

According to HITC, De Zerbi is back in contention for the Bayern role after talks broke down between Thomas Tuchel and the club regarding him remaining in charge.

Bayern had previously looked into appointing De Zerbi, Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann to the role after it was originally announced Tuchel would be leaving back in February.

However, after missing out on both Nagelsmann and Alonso after they committed their futures to Germany and Bayer Leverkusen respectively, the possibility of Tuchel signing a new deal was discussed.

The Italian is now being considered for the role once again, with interest reportedly mutual from his side. Bayern have informed his representatives that they would be willing to pay his release clause if the German side pushes ahead with their interest.

De Zerbi spoke about his future last month and insisted he was committed to the Seagulls, saying: “I feel good in England, in the Premier League and I have no intention of leaving.

"There is no team that can change my mind, I have made a commitment. I like being outside and experiencing the atmosphere of the stadium. Furthermore, in England, I have the opportunity to improve my knowledge of the language and football.”

WHAT TUCHEL SAID

“This is my last press conference as FC Bayern manager, there were talks, but we didn’t reach an agreement so the decision from February still stands,” Tuchel explained in a recent press conference.

Best EA FC 24 silver cards to use on Ultimate Team

In the early stages of every FIFA game, now EA FC, users have to slowly build up their Ultimate Team squads.

Collecting silver and bronze cards is where this tends to begin, and you get a feel for some alternative cards that are worth using.

Football FanCast runs you through a starting XI of silver cards that are fun to use and work well in-game on EA FC 24.

Jason Steele Goalkeeper, Brighton

The Premier League is the location for our goalkeeper and in particular, the south coast.

Jason Steele was hugely impressive last season, displacing Robert Sanchez in between the Brighton & Hove Albion sticks.

This time around, the Englishman has interchanged with Bart Verbruggen in Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

In terms of EA FC, Steele is a 71-rated rare silver card.

75 kicking and 72 positioning are his standout stats on the front of his Ultimate Team item, which won’t necessarily blow you away, but his reflexes feel much higher than a 71 when playing with him.

Ruan Right-back, D.C. United

Oue right-back choice takes us to MLS, with Ruan, who currently plays for D.C. United.

Ruan is pretty nifty on the flank with his 92 pace, though it has to be said that 55 defending for a defender isn’t particularly inspiring. However, he has the recovery speed to make up for it and works just as well as a RWB or even a RM.

Ruan enjoyed a few good years at Orlando City, winning the US Open Cup there before leaving to ply his trade in the capital.

Elisabeth Tse Centre-back, Havre AC

The addition of female players into Ultimate Team has been one of the major changes moving into the EA FC era. Being able to play with players from leagues such as the WSL and NWSL is really refreshing and much-needed.

Elisabeth Tse is a Canadian centre-back and is just 20 years old who plays their football for Le Havre in the French top flight.

Speed at the back is always important whether you want to admit it or not, so 65 pace for a silver defender isn't too shabby. Other notable stats include 80 jumping and 78 strength, which contribute towards Tse’s 71 overall physicality.

Some players can feel clunky in-game but Tse is the opposite, as both on and off the ball, everything is smooth with her in the team at the heart of defence.

Mamadou Fall Centre-back, FC Barcelona

Elisabeth Tse’s centre-back partner in this team is just slightly quicker with 68 pace, while Mamadou Fall's sprint speed being his superior stat ahead of acceleration.

Mamadou Fall of FC Barcelona is the man in question, and similarly, his jumping and strength stats tower over the rest with 82 and 78 respectively.

Fall made just 42 appearances in Major League Soccer with LAFC before earning a high-profile move to the La Liga giants.

The Senegalese defender, who is part of the Barca Atletic squad, can also play at right-back which is a huge plus, and at 6 foot 2, he is a force to be reckoned with in both boxes.

Bali Mumba Left-back, Plymouth Argyle

Bali Mumba has been a revelation since he first arrived at Plymouth Argyle – with his successful spell on loan from Norwich City earning him a permanent move to Home Park.

84 pace and 71 dribbling are a solid pair of stats, but it is his 93 balance that comes to the fore when you set off on a mazy Mumba dribble.

He beats players with ease even in this higher division, following Argyle’s title win last term, and this is represented in the game.

Not only can Mumba play in a variety of positions on UT, but he also has 3-star skill moves and a 5-star weak foot. The latter is particularly evident as when you do drive up the field with the Argyle man, he can weave left and right.

High work rate in attack and defence put the icing on the cake.

Hernani Right-midfielder, Rio Ave

This isn’t the first or last mention of the fact that pace is integral to success on EA FC.

Some people may not want to admit that, with the ability to outperform and out-dribble players being more rewarding, but that is just the way it works.

A right-flank of Ruan and Rio Ave's Hernani with his 89 pace makes them a lethal duo and it is certainly his speed which stands out.

The Portuguese wide-man has slightly underwhelming shooting stats, but he can dribble well and has 5-star skill moves.

He is great fun to use and the end product can be put on the shoulders of those around him.

Jose Cifuentes Centre-midfielder, Rangers

Jose Cifuentes made the move to Rangers from LAFC, where his final act in the US was to help win them the MLS Cup – with Gareth Bale’s last-gasp goal taking the game to penalties before the side proceeded to emerge victorious on spot-kicks.

Cifuentes is the first of our two mobile midfielders and there is a lot to like across the board when it comes to his statistical breakdown.

Stats go from amber to green on the traffic light system when they surpass 70, and he has shot power, balance, ball control, dribbling, defensive awareness, strength and stamina all in this ballpark.

On top of his wide range of green stats, Cifuentes has 70 agility and composure.

With 3-star skill moves and a 4-star weak foot, there is a lot to like about this Ultimate Team card on EA FC, even if one drawback is that he can’t be used in any position other than CM.

Warren Zaire-Emery Centre-midfielder, Paris SG

Unlike Cifuentes, Paris Saint-Germain wonderkid Warren Zaire-Emery has the ability to be deployed as a CDM in addition to his default position of CM.

There has been a large cultural shift in the French capital in the past year or so, with Neymar and Lionel Messi departing and being replaced by less high-profile players in comparison to the usual PSG acquisitions of recent times.

Zaire-Emery is benefiting from this shift and despite his tender years, the midfielder has been trusted greatly by Luis Enrique in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

There is no doubt that the 17-year-old will go on to great things, but for the time being, he is a 74-rated rare silver card with a lot to like about it.

No stats of Zaire-Emery’s jump off the page exactly, but he is a very well-rounded player both on EA FC and in real life.

76 sprint speed, 75 vision, 77 short passing, 76 ball control and 75 composure are amongst his higher numbers.

Gio Queiroz Left-midfielder, Arsenal

Returning to England now, but the destination this time is the Women’s Super League.

Jonas Eidevall’s Arsenal have a lot of talented players in the wide areas, whether it be Caitlin Foord, Katie McCabe or Beth Mead.

Gio Queiroz was just a teenager when she arrived in north London and spent last season on loan at Everton.

This time around, the Brazilian has remained a Gunner for the campaign and may yet leave on loan again in the new year, though she remains a very bright prospect indeed.

In terms of EA FC, Queiroz can play at LM, LW, RW or even ST.

Also, the Arsenal star has a solid amount of pace with 79 acceleration and 79 sprint speed, not to mention that she also boasts 82 balance and 78 ball control, which play into her dribbling abilities.

When using Queiroz’s card, there is a feeling of gliding across the turf which makes for a much more enjoyable experience in-game.

Artem Dovbyk Striker, Girona

The first of our two forwards to lead the line is Ukrainian Artem Dovbyk.

Dovbyk earned a TOTW card very recently, so who knows how far his stock could rise?

His Girona side won 4-2 away at Osasuna in November and he played a part in the first three goals, assisting two and scoring one.

He also opened the scoring as they won at the home of Barcelona to remain at the La Liga summit.

Dovbyk’s player-of-the-match display against Osasuna was recognised by EA FC, but that card is 83-rated, so doesn’t fit the bill for this list.

However, his base card is 70-rated and a combination of 74 pace and the fact that he is 6 foot 1 is certainly enticing.

This makes him a dual threat in the opposition’s box, and when you add 3-star skill moves, a 4-star weak foot, 73 shot power and 85 jumping into the equation, success can easily be had there.

Liverpool could just sign another Thiago in “world-class” £46m-rated star

It's been promising, to say the least, at Anfield this season, with Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool putting the troubles of last year behind them and forging ahead with some compelling performances to tantalise a silver-laden end to the campaign.

Klopp has won nearly every trophy available since his appointment on Merseyside way back when, and while last year's failure to qualify for the Champions League was a bruising blow, it does mean that the German can complete the full gamut with victory in the Europa League.

Liverpool have topped their Europa League group with a match to spare and will host West Ham United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals later this month; they are third in the Premier League and just two points off leaders Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp will be lining up options to replace the club’s talisman, should the unthinkable happen in 2024…

ByAngus Sinclair Dec 2, 2023

The resurgence was facilitated following the full-scale reshaping of the midfield, with a mass Anfield exodus making space for Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo to assume central roles – both literally and figuratively.

Liverpool still lack a specialist No. 6, however, with Endo industrious and eager but perhaps lacking some of the quality to truly cement a starting berth.

As such, none other than Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich appears to have been lined up for transfer…

Liverpool transfer news – Joshua Kimmich

According to respected BILD journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool are among the host of European outfits interested in signing Kimmich from the indomitable Bundesliga champions.

Falk claims that Klopp knows the Germany international's strengths and would be only too happy to welcome him to the Liverpool fold, where his specific style would 'suit' the Reds.

Valued at £46m by Football Transfers, the 28-year-old pass master would be a fantastic addition to Liverpool's squad as they look to take the next step in their revival.

Joshua Kimmich's style of play

Kimmich has been a salient midfielder at the top of the European game for many years now, signing for Bayern from Stuttgart for an undisclosed fee as a teenager in 2015.

Since then, he has chalked up 365 appearances for the Bavarian giants, posting 40 goals and 100 assists and winning the full sweep of silverware, including the Champions League.

As per FBref, Kimmich ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 7% for shot-creating actions, the top 2% for passes attempted and the top 4% for progressive passes per 90.

Effectively, this showcases his celestial brilliance with his distribution; always on the ball and influencing the play, finding teammates in the danger area and racking up direct assists himself.

Simply sublime technically, in his decision-making and with his commitment on the pitch, Kimmich has even led the likes of renowned manager Jose Mourinho to make lavish remarks over his skill set.

Mourinho said: "I see him as a top right-back, left-back, centre-back, No.6, No.8, No.10… he has the qualities to be anything!

"I think he looks to me, very intelligent related to football, very intelligent, understands the moments of the games and understands the difference between positions and understands what he has to do here and what he has to do there. I think he’s phenomenal, an absolutely phenomenal player."

This season, Kimmich has completed 18 matches across all competitions and racked up six assists, captaining the side on multiple occasions from his favoured defensive midfield placement.

As per Sofascore, the £375k-per-week midfield machine has started ten times in the German top-flight this season, completing 91% of his passes, averaging 2.6 key passes per game, making 1.9 tackles and 6.4 ball recoveries each outing and generally just providing his teammates with superlative leadership and inspiration.

Considered to be "the embodiment of world-class" by former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who also noted his "profound understanding of the game", Kimmich is currently out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 season, and while a renewal is certainly not out of the question, outfits are circling like vultures and he might be swayed to try his hand elsewhere.

Why Liverpool perhaps shouldn't sign Kimmich

Now, the 82-cap Germany international is distinguished and rightly considered among the finest of his position worldwide, but Liverpool might be wise to remember the acquisition of Thiago Alcantara several years ago when pondering over whether to issue a swoop.

Thiago, aged 32, signed for Liverpool from Bayern for £25m in 2020, arriving as one of Europe's most spectacular maestros and boasting a wealth of illustrious experience in Germany and in his native Spain with Barcelona.

To emphasise the point of his passing proficiency, he ranks among the top 5% of midfielders for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 8% for successful take-ons, the top 11% for tackles and the top 5% for interceptions per 90.

Alas, the £200k-per-week star's skills have shone through too little too often, with injuries ravaging his chances of impacting proceedings for sustained periods; this term, he has yet to make a single matchday appearance.

While Kimmich boasts greater reliability – he has played more than 25 times in every Bundesliga campaign since 2015/16 – he will be 30 years old by the end of next season and Klopp might question whether parting with a large sum on an ageing player, going against the club's model, would be prudent.

With the likes of Andre on Liverpool's radar and Endo, aged 30, already being signed as a stop-gap option in the centre, perhaps it's not the best idea.

Liverpool would be wise to invest in younger, more malleable options who can be nurtured and shaped under Klopp's guidance, with Thiago even serving as a mentor until his contract expires in June.
