Shorey, Sindhu and Murasingh headline opening day of Duleep Trophy

Murasingh gets five for East; Avesh hits back for Central

Tripura’s right-arm pace bowler Manisankar Murasingh led the way for East Zone with 5 for 42 to help them bundle Central Zone out for 182 on the first evening of their Duleep Trophy quarter-final game in Alur. Central lost 6 for 35 in a middle and lower-order collapse, four wickets out of which went to Murasingh. The fall for Central started when Murasingh had wicketkeeper-batter Upendra Yadav caught for 25 in the 59th over, before removing Saransh Jain without scoring two balls later. All of Central’s top-six batters threw away settled starts with none scoring more than 38. At 86 for 4, Rinku Singh and Upendra got down for some repair work by adding 61. But before the pair could put up anything massive, Murasingh got Upendra to disrupt the opposition’s momentum. Before that, left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed had struck twice to get Rinku, for 38, and Shubham Sharma for 13.However, Avesh Khan ensured that East didn’t walk away without any damage despite Central’s meagre total. Avesh trapped East’s captain Abhimanyu Easwaran lbw with the first ball he bowled, before going on to have Shantanu Mishra lbw for 6 in the tenth over. He bowled six out of the 12 overs and finished with 2 for 13. East, who ended the day at 32 for 2, had sent in Shahbaz Nadeem as nightwatcher after Mishra’s dismissal. Sudeep Kumar Gharami was unbeaten at the other end with three boundaries in his knock.Dhruv Shorey struck 135 on the opening day of North Zone’s Duleep Trophy clash•PTI

Shorey and Sindhu power North

Delhi opening batter Dhruv Shorey hit 135 and held North Zone’s middle order together, as North ended day one of their game against North East Zone at a comfortable 306 for 6 after being at a dicey 162 for 4 at one stage. North were also propelled by Haryana’s teenaged allrounder Nishant Sindhu, who ended unbeaten on 76, as they made an inexperienced North East attack work hard in Bengaluru.Shorey, whose innings came off 211 balls and included 22 fours, was involved in crucial partnerships during his stay. He first added 80 with fellow opening partner Prashant Chopra, before Chopra and No. 3 Ankit Kalsi fell to Pheiroijam Jotin off successive balls. Shorey then added 59 with Prabhsimran Singh for the third wicket and eventually another 80 with Sindhu for the fifth wicket.Kishan Sangha then nipped out Shorey and North captain Jayant Yadav in the space of three deliveries. But Sindhu ensured that his side ended the day without further hiccups, stitching a 64-run unbeaten stand in a little over 20 overs with Pulkit Narang.

Shastri: Jadeja as captain 'looked a fish out of water, totally out of place'

Former India head coach says that if need be, Super Kings should wait for the 2023 mini auction to identify their next captain

Shashank Kishore10-May-2022Ravi Shastri, the former India head coach, believes Ravindra Jadeja isn’t a “natural captain” and looked like a “fish out of water” during his stint at the helm with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2022. Shastri is also of the opinion that MS Dhoni, who stepped down from the leadership role at the start of the season but was handed back the job after eight games, should lead next year too if he’s fit and ready to play.Related

“He [Jadeja] is not a natural captain. He hasn’t captained at any level. So, to give him the responsibility I thought was a little hard on Jadeja,” Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out. “People might want to judge Jaddu, but it’s not his fault. He hasn’t captained anywhere. He looked a fish out of water, totally out of place and he’s far better off playing as a player. Because he’s one of the best around in the business, when it comes to allrounders.”So let him just focus on his cricket. That [decision to give him the captaincy] cost CSK a few games early on. If you see the form they’re in now, if they had this going early on, they’ll be right up there in the mix.”Two out of Super Kings’ four wins so far this season have come since Dhoni took back the reins, in just three games. They currently placed ninth and need to win all their three remaining games to stand a chance to force a playoff possibility.Shastri also said that Super Kings should take their time before identifying their next captain, even if it means they wait till next year’s mini auction to sign someone from outside the group, like Royal Challengers Bangalore did in acquiring Faf du Plessis, a former Super Kings player.Responding to a question on whether Super Kings could consider Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has only had limited captaincy experience at the domestic level for Maharashtra, Shastri said he wasn’t in favour.

Gaikwad has led his state team in just five one-dayers and five T20s, all during the 2021-22 season. Since his breakthrough IPL season in 2020, he has transitioned to becoming a key member of Super Kings, and was retained along with Dhoni, Jadeja and Moeen Ali ahead of this season.”You have got to see where the player has come from, what levels of cricket has he played,” Shastri said. “Has he captained a side? Does he have the flair for captaincy? You have to look into these kinds of things before jumping to conclusions before deciding whether a player should captain in the future or not. Not just because he’s scoring runs, he’s the highest run scorer, you become captain.”Which happens in India a lot. Not just at the state level but also at the national level too, where a player has just been put in because he’s getting runs. He might never have captained, might have had very little experience, but his name is in the mix.”I think captaincy is a totally different job. It demands flair, the ability to read the game, man-management qualities, above all, the ability to communication, not just with players but also media these days, so it comes with a lot of add-ons.”5:26

Vettori: ‘Probably comes down to Jadeja not enjoying the captaincy’

Who could be the options then? “Just like Faf du Plessis for RCB,” Shastri said, suggesting Super Kings wait till the auction if need be. “Within the mix, if you think Ruturaj has, or Moeen or even a local player, if there’s someone who you think has that ability to lead a side, go for it.”At the time of resuming as captain, Dhoni had said that Jadeja had been affected by the “burden of captaincy” and that he wasn’t enjoying the job. “Once you become captain, it means a lot of demands come in,” Dhoni had said. “But it affected his mind as the tasks grew. I think captaincy burdened his prep and performances.” Dhoni felt at the time that overseeing the job from behind the stumps wasn’t something he was prepared to do for long, because he wanted the new captain to develop his own identity.Shastri believed that being one of the best fielders also meant Jadeja as captain wasn’t being able to do justice to his best qualities.”Another aspect of Jadeja is he is one of the best fielders, if not the best,” he said. “When you’re the best, you have to patrol the deep, where there are sweepers or you need deep midwicket, deep square-leg, long-on, long-off. These are areas the best fielders go to because of their ability to cover distances and catch the ball. If you’re captain of the side and you hedge your bets wanting to be in the circle to marshall resources and control things, your side is the loser.”

India confirm they will travel to Brisbane for final Test

“I had a call last night from the BCCI secretary and he confirmed we are good to travel to Brisbane on Tuesday,” CA interim CEO Nick Hockley

Andrew McGlashan10-Jan-2021After much uncertainty, the final Test at the Gabba will go ahead after India confirmed they would travel to Brisbane.Over the last couple of weeks, various concerns have been raised by the India squad, largely around the conditions of their hotel quarantine in the city, while there was briefly doubts raised when a case of Covid-19 from the UK strain was reported in Brisbane with a three-day lockdown being announced. That will end on Monday evening with no further community transmission cases confirmed. After final talks between senior officials from both countries on Sunday, the schedule has been ticked off for the last time and the squads will travel north on Tuesday following the conclusion of the third Test. India will then fly home as soon as the final Test finishes. The match will be played with a reduced capacity of 50%. Before this recent case the ground was due to be able to have a full crowd.”I had a call last night from the BCCI secretary and he confirmed we are good to travel to Brisbane on Tuesday,” CA interim CEO Nick Hockley told .One of the major sticking points had been the potential of players being confined to their rooms while at the team hotel – which has been booked out entirely by Cricket Australia – except when at training or the match. However, all along there have been assurances given that players will be able to mingle in communal areas of the hotel and that these protocols will not be changed at the last minute. The situation became more complex when Queensland closed its border to Greater Sydney due to the Covid-19 outbreak which emerged before Christmas. That has resulted in both teams needing exemptions to travel to Brisbane and means they need to be in a form of quarantine while in the city.Australia have not lost a Test at the Gabba since 1988.

Bangladesh collapse again after Brathwaite's ton

The visitors slid to 50 for 6 after the West Indies opener’s 121 secured a 363-run first-innings lead on a 14-wicket day

West Indies’ fast bowlers rocked Bangladesh, again, reducing them to 50 for 6 in the final hour of play on the second day. This after Kraigg Brathwaite’s seventh Test hundred secured West Indies a 363-run first-innings lead.Kemar Roach, who had wrecked Bangladesh in the first innings, did not take the field in the second because of a hamstring injury, but Shannon Gabriel blew the visitors away with sheer pace and bounce.Gabriel, fresh from a 20-wicket series against Sri Lanka, dismissed Tamim Iqbal soon after the opener had become the first Bangladesh player to 4000 Test runs. One ball after Tamim’s dismissal, Mominul Haque was bowled by a Gabriel shooter that snuck through his defences.Jason Holder, who took the new ball with Gabriel due to Roach’s absence, then plunged into the action. He kept moving the outswinger late from Liton Das, who resisted for a while, but in the seventh over, he went after another outswinger, only to edge to Brathwaite at first slip.Gabriel then blazed one past Mushfiqur Rahim’s defensive prod, with the ball cutting back after pitching on a good length. Shakib Al Hasan then became his fourth victim, squared up to one that snaked away from him. Mehidy Hasan, who had earlier bowled well to give Bangladesh something to cheer about, became Holder’s second wicket when he edged a short ball. The action wasn’t as dramatic when the hosts started the day on 201 for 2. They added 205 runs in 69.3 overs, Brathwaite leading the way with a polished ton. Having begun the day on 88, Brathwaite first took 20 balls to reach the milestone and then let the others do the bulk of the scoring. He was in control of most of his shots, however, and only offered one chance – Liton Das dropping him at leg gully when he was on 110 though it was a tough opportunity.Brathwaite added 52 runs for the third wicket with Devendra Bishoo before the nightwatchman lost his off stump to Kamrul Islam Rabbi. The second session saw West Indies lose their way to Bangladesh’s spinners. Mehidy removed Roston Chase leg-before and had Holder caught at short-leg, while Shakib took the wickets of Brathwaite, caught at cover, and had Shane Dowrich caught at silly mid-off.Roach, though, struck six fours and a six in his breezy 33, before falling leg-before to Mehidy, while Hope made 67 off 127 balls. Debutant Abu Jayed took Hope’s wicket – caught at fine leg – before removing Gabriel to wrap up the West Indies innings. Mehidy and Jayed took three wickets each while Shakib took two wickets.

Multan becomes sixth Pakistan Super League franchise

The Schön Group, a Dubai-based enterprise well-established in the real estate business, has won the rights to the sixth franchise of the Pakistan Super League, and chosen Multan as its team

Umar Farooq02-Jun-2017The Schön Group, a Dubai-based enterprise well-established in the real estate business, has won the rights to the sixth franchise of the Pakistan Super League, and chosen Multan as its team. The deal has been confirmed by the PCB, pending legal formalities, and the contract is for eight years. The Schön Group’s owners have roots in Pakistan. As many as 30 companies, according to the PCB, showed interest in the franchise, with about 12 submitting bids. Out of these bids, only Schön made a bid high enough to meet the base price of USD 5.2 million per year. The highest bidder had the right to choose the base city for the new franchise out of Multan, Faisalabad, Dera Murad Jamali, FATA and Hyderabad. The PCB had been considering adding a sixth team to the tournament after its first season in 2016, but a contract between the PCB and the five franchises meant the expansion could take place only after the second season. The first two seasons of the PSL featured Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi. These original five franchises were sold for USD 93 million for a ten-year period. Karachi became the most expensive team with the ARY Group shelling out USD 26 million to gain ownership. Lahore sold for USD 25 million to Qatar Lubricants Company (QALCO), while the Haier Group paid USD 16 million for Peshawar. The franchise from the capital, Islamabad, went to Leonine Global Sports, which is an entity created specifically for the PSL by a group of Pakistani investors, for USD 15 million. Omar Associate, a Karachi-based building company, secured Quetta for USD 11 million. In 2016, Najam Sethi, the PSL chairman, had floated an idea to have a Kashmir team in the tournament, but it was rejected after opposition from some of the franchises on financial grounds and the potential for controversy given Kashmir’s sensitive status vis-a-vis India. The opposition from the franchises back then was centered around the potential cut in their share of the central revenue pool if a sixth franchise were to be created.Pakistan have been hosting the PSL in the UAE due to the security concerns of the overseas players. However, in 2017, the final was played in Lahore at the Gaddafi stadium amid presidential-style security and went off without incident. Last month, Sethi revealed plans to host as many as eight matches in Pakistan in 2018, with four each to be held in Lahore and Karachi.

Court delays BCCI meet on Modi

The Patiala House Court has stayed the BCCI’s SGM on September 25, when the board was supposed to ban former IPL chairman Lalit Modi for life from all BCCI affairs

Amol Karhadkar21-Sep-2013The Patiala House Court in New Delhi has stayed the BCCI’s special general meeting (SGM) on September 25, when the board was supposed to ban former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi for life from all BCCI affairs. A district court judge issued the stay order after an application filed by Modi.In response, a BCCI official told ESPNcricinfo their legal cell will challenge the order on Monday and clarify the “gross misrepresentation” of facts made to the court on Modi’s behalf.”The plaintiff (Modi) has prima facie shown the notice of the SGM has been issued without proper authority,” the judge noted. “He has also shown that he shall suffer irreparable loss which cannot be compensated in terms of money by the report of the Disciplinary Committee being considered in an unauthorised manner. The balance of convenience thus lies in favour of the plaintiff. The defendants are thus hereby restrained from holding the SGM scheduled for 25.09.2013.”Modi’s counsels Swadeep Hora and Abhishek Singh argued before district judge Ruby Alka Gupta that the SGM notice, circulated by BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel on September 2, was illegal since Patel’s appointment was not in accordance with the BCCI constitution. Since only the president of the BCCI can fill up a mid-term vacancy of a principal office-bearer, Patel’s appointment by a working committee meeting with the president having stepped aside was illegal, they contended. The counsels said that since N Srinivasan had stopped discharging his duties as BCCI president on June 2 and Patel was appointed on June 10, the notice of SGM “issued ‘on the instructions’ of the President. The said notice is thus stated to be illegal, non-est and contrary to the rules and regulations of the BCCI.”The BCCI’s disciplinary committee had found Modi guilty on eight different charges of “various acts of indiscipline and misconduct” after conducting an investigation that lasted almost three years. The charges, relating to irregularities in various financial and administrative matters of the IPL, including the sale of franchise and media rights, were pressed by the BCCI in 2010 soon after Modi’s swift and dramatic exit from the league he founded.

Anyon and Panesar give Sussex the edge

Worcestershire squandered a decent position on the first day of their County Championship match at Sussex despite a debut half-century from teenager Aneesh Kapil

10-Aug-2011
Scorecard
Worcestershire squandered a decent position on the first day of their County Championship match at Sussex despite a debut half-century from teenager Aneesh Kapil. The 18-year-old from Wolverhampton made an attractive 54 in his first four-day
game while skipper Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali also made half-centuries.When Kapil and Dutchman Alex Kervezee were adding 88 for the fifth wicket
either side of tea to take their side to 244 for 4, Sussex’s decision to bowl
first looked a mistake. But the tide turned when Kervezee chanced his arm looking for a third run which would have taken him to 50 and was run out by Joe Gatting’s accurate return
running round from third man.Worcestershire collapsed, losing their last six wickets for 56 runs and were
bowled out for 290. That left Sussex six overs to negotiate before stumps and Ed Joyce and Gatting, promoted to open in the absence of Chris Nash who is with England Lions,
survived comfortably to close on 16 for none.Sussex had been hoping to exploit any early dampness in the wicket and the
immediate signs were good. Matt Pardoe feathered a catch behind when James Anyon
seamed one away in his first over and then Vikram Solanki was beaten for pace
and bowled for a duck by Anyon to leave Worcestershire six for two.Mitchell and Moeen rebuilt in an excellent stand of 143 in 43 overs. Moeen was
particularly productive through the covers while his more pragmatic partner
accumulated steadily to blunt a Sussex side who used six bowlers before lunch in
search of another breakthrough. It finally came thanks to Monty Panesar, who bowled another long, probing spell
which was rewarded with three wickets. Mitchell (66) was leg before aiming
towards mid-wicket and then Moeen (71) was surprised by a ball which spun back
into him and gave a catch to wicketkeeper Ben Brown.Kapil showed few nerves, top-edging a six when Anyon tried to test him against
the short ball, and he reached his 50 with his fifth four. A pull off Kirk
Wernars brought him a sixth boundary but he perished to a gully catch off the
next ball and was sixth out.Sussex then encountered little resistance from the tail. Panesar returned and
immediately had Gareth Andrew well taken by the diving Mike Yardy at slip.Anyon finished with four for 71 after picking up two wickets with the second
new ball while Wayne Parnell had Saeed Ajmal well caught at third slip off a
flat-footed waft outside off stump.
