Where do the minnows go from here?

Watching Associates get hammered in World Cups is dispiriting, but there must be a way of ensuring they play against big teams more than once every four years

Osman Samiuddin in Hambantota20-Feb-2011Such days make for a dispiriting – and complicated – spectacle. The two matches in Chennai and Hambantota on Sunday are precisely what the format and the World Cup don’t need, yet it is the very existence of such matches that allows cricket to think of itself as a global game.Much has been said on the issue of the Associates in the run-up to this tournament. Probably the most thoughtful and reasoned assessment of their plight came from Ricky Ponting, who in his sporting old age, appears to have found a wisened balance. The World Cup needs to be more competitive, he said, and that can’t be argued with. The first two days have seen individual and collective quality, but no competitiveness. But Associates also need to be given a platform to develop. They only get to play big teams once every four years. There, they get duly battered, go away, come back four years later and go through it again. Here is the real plight.Occasionally there is hope: Kenya’s run in 2003, Ireland’s performances in 2007. But where do they go from there? Into the glass ceiling Ireland spoke of a few years ago? Mostly, there is what happened to Kenya and Canada on Sunday. What, Ponting asked, do they learn from such batterings?Canada showed some spirit and bite in Hambantota. For 25 overs in the field they can say they had things under control. But it was always a precarious kind of hold, prisoner to the gulf in quality of superior opponents and their own lack of exposure to it. Once Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara decided to take the game away, they simply went on and did so. As Canada’s Sri Lankan coach Pubudu Dassanayake later acknowledged, they what to do; the plans were in place; presumably some kind of SWOT analysis coaches love doing was carried out as well. They just didn’t have the tools to do it.In four World Cups since 1979, Canada has won one game, against Bangladesh. Yet there is something to build on with this side. There are young players coming through. They have coaches with international experience. The ICC facilitates their preparation for such tournaments. But without playing any top-flight cricket outside the World Cup, how do they grow as players, as a team, how do they build? Not by playing top sides every four years.Dassanayake seems a cheery man, so he insisted that his players would have learnt something from the 210-run defeat to Sri Lanka. “Mainly this is a great experience for my youngsters,” he said. “Playing against great bowlers like [Muttiah] Muralitharan and [Ajantha] Mendis, it gives them a lot of confidence. If you talk about talent they are all talented but just not exposed at this level. We can coach certain things but it’s all about them going and experiencing this and getting the belief they can compete against top players.”They might very well take something from this, but where do they take it? These sides want to become full Test members. Ultimately, that must be the aim of everyone involved in cricket. By not playing regular top-level cricket, or not, as may be the case, playing in future World Cups, that will not happen.Ponting’s suggestion – taken up by Mahela Jayawardene as well – that there should be another way of getting them to play constant top-flight cricket offers a solution if there is seriousness about finding one.”You need to give them opportunities to play more regular cricket with top nations,” Jayawardene said. “Maybe on and off they need to organise certain things for them because their cricket can be improved. Cricket is a global game and we need to try and make sure everyone plays and comes to that standard one day.”Until – and if – that day comes, associates, as Dassanayake put it, are in the dark about where they go next. He is not alone.

A professional solution to an amateur game

With Irish cricket at a crossroads, Cricinfo talks the CEO Warren Deutrom about the next steps for the game

Irish cricket is at a crossroads. Their trouncing of Canada in the Intercontinental Cup final brings the curtain down on the most successful period of international cricket in the country’s history. In the last three months they have beaten two Test nations and tied with another at the World Cup and retained the Associate four-day crown. But the hard work starts now.The Irish Cricket Union certainly can’t be accused of a lack of ambition. It realises that if the game is to grow and become a serious contender in the country – and the national side to become a consistent performer on the world stage – it has to grab this opportunity. The initial post-World Cup excitement has already started to dissipate and the challenge is to keep cricket in the headlines.Since returning from the Caribbean there have been indications of the difficulties which lie ahead. Three of the leading players – Eoin Morgan, Boyd Rankin and Niall O’Brien – have county contracts and haven’t been available for Friends Provident Trophy matches, although Morgan was released for the Intercontinental final. Another, Ed Joyce, was lost to England last year. Currently there is no way for a player to earn a living by playing cricket in Ireland. However, plans are being developed to bring a professional structure to the game, soon enough for the country’s current generation of leading players to be enticed back to their homeland.”There’s a golden chance for us to capitalise and make sure the team continues to perform at the highest level,” Warren Deutrom, the ICU’s chief executive, told Cricinfo during the Intercontinental Cup final. “The best way to do that is by making sure we have some form of keeping them loyal to us. We need to look at whether the plan is to have a great team per se or are we aiming at the World Cup in 2011 which means we need to target the qualifiers in 2009.”

If we believe central contracts are the best way forward, which I believe most people in Irish cricket do, then we need to work out how we’ll pay for it and the best model to use

“If those are our objectives what are the best ways to achieve that. If we believe central contracts are the best way forward, which I believe most people in Irish cricket do, then we need to work out how we’ll pay for it and the best model to use. What may be right for Boyd Rankin, Niall O’Brien and Eoin Morgan who have country contracts may not be right for the other players who won’t have other careers to look forward to.”For a country like Ireland to move from amateur to professional cricket is a massive undertaking and Deutrom is aware decisions can’t be made lightly. “What we don’t want to do is rush into it, get it wrong and waste money that has been provided to us by commercial outlets, the ICC or Irish Sports Council,” he said. “But conversely we can’t take too long over it because it’s a World Cup year, and what better time to take advantage. Also, the likes of Boyd, Eoin and Niall won’t be making decisions about their contracts in March or April but in the middle of this year.”Sadly for the ICU money doesn’t grow on trees, so the major challenge will be find funding. This is one of the main reasons behind the decision to host the India-South Africa series in June, which has upset the ECB and means Ireland are likely to discontinue their participation in the Friends Provident Trophy. The three-match series, however, will provide vital revenue and allow the national team ODIs against both teams. In July they will also play West Indies during a quadrangular event including Netherlands and Scotland .

“As a full member of ICC we have the right to raise our own revenues and this is way we can see it in the short term,” Deutrom said on the decision to stage the ODIs. “We have brought on board a professional TV sales person to help sell the rights on our behalf and are keen for some sort of broadcast into the UK and Ireland . But we are also keen to make as much money as possible, not just for the sake of it, but to invest in the players. There hasn’t been any formal notice from ECB as yet but from the ICU point of view we would need a lengthy discussion about whether we’d want to continue in the FP Trophy in any event.”This is a clear sign that the health of Ireland’s future lies in playing international and top-level Associate cricket. Already this year they have played 23 ODIs, but it is vital that they can continue playing a high volume of matches outside of World Cup years.”The key thing is, if we were to have a professional structure, would there be enough cricket for them [the players]?” said Deutrom. “We’d be looking to move into an arena where we could participate in overseas tours to other Full Member countries. Whether we play their A teams or the full side for a couple of full ODIs is yet to be seen. Then there’s the domestic programme. We want to have as many ODIs as possible and a situation where we continue to play as many of the top Associates as possible.”Deutrom concedes that he has a tough task ahead of him to enable Ireland to build on their recent success. “At the moment the Irish Sports Council, who are an enormously generous supporter of the game, are our biggest source of funding and commercial revenues very small. We need to reverse that trend and it is one of my key jobs to enable us to stand on our own two feet through sponsorship and broadcasting.”Given what has been achieved in the last few months you wouldn’t say it’s beyond Ireland, but the next challenge is greater than anything before.

Michael Neser stars with the bat this time as Glamorgan scent victory

Worcestershire 109 and 195 for 7 (Waite 45* van der Gugten 4-38) lead Glamorgan 258 (Neser 86, Finch 5-74) by 46 runsA well-made 86 from Michael Neser and four wickets from Timm van der Gugten has put Glamorgan within touching distance of their first LV= Insurance County Championship win of the season against Worcestershire in Cardiff.Amid reports that Neser has been called up for the Ashes preparation squad it was a timely reminder of his all-round abilities as he marshalled the Glamorgan tail to a significant lead.Van der Gugten, the leading wicket-taker in Division Two of the Championship, was a consistent threat as the Worcestershire top order struggled once again. Had it not been for a seventh-wicket stand between Gareth Roderick and Matthew Waite their side could have lost this game inside two days. With Worcestershire ending the day on 195 for 7, 46 runs in front with just three wickets left, Glamorgan should wrap up victory tomorrow.Having resumed on 177 for 6, Glamorgan were in need of runs from their lower order if they were going to maintain the pressure on Worcestershire. When Billy Root was dismissed by Adam Finch with just four runs added to the overnight score there was a chance that the home team would throw away the opportunity to set up victory. In the Worcestershire first innings it was Neser and van der Gugten who led the charge with the ball. When it was Glamorgan’s turn to bat the pair also made a telling contribution. A 57-run stand took Glamorgan to a first batting point and the lead past 100 before van der Gugten fell to the part-time spin of Brett D’Oliviera. The Glamorgan total had reached 258 when Neser was the last man to fall, edging to Taylor Cornall in the slips off the bowling of Joe Leach for 86. Neser’s effort is the only score over fifty in the match.Finch claimed career-best figures of 5 for 74, his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, as Glamorgan finished with a lead of 149 on first innings. In previous matches on this ground this season, the pitch has become markedly flatter as the game progressed, but that has not been the case here. While batting appeared a little easier than on day one, it was still a challenge even for set batters.Worcestershire’s top order struggled once again in the second innings with van der Gugten the destroyer-in-chief with 4 for 38. He had dismissed both openers in the opening overs to leave Worcestershire 21 for 2. When Jamie McIlroy removed Jack Haynes for 14 it left the visitors struggling at 48 for 3.A 50-run stand between Adam Hose and Azhar Ali steadied things for Worcestershire, but when Hose was dismissed edging the ball onto his stumps for the second time in the match it brought another cluster of wickets with van der Gugten dismissing Azhar and Brett D’Oliviera in the space of two overs to leave Worcestershire 112 for 6.In the Worcestershire first innings the biggest stand was between Roderick and Waite, and in their second innings the two combined for Worcestershire’s best partnership to prevent an innings defeat and ensure that Glamorgan would have to bat again. The two shared a stand of 72 before the off spin of Marnus Labuschagne accounted for Roderick who was bowled off an edge for 36. That wicket left Worcestershire 184 for 7, just 35 runs in front of Glamorgan.Waite reached the close on 45 not out, the highest score made by a Worcestershire player in this match.

Andreas Christensen attracts AC Milan interest but Barcelona boss Hansi Flick reluctant to let ex-Chelsea defender go

AC Milan are exploring a late move for Andreas Christensen as Barcelona weigh selling the ex-Chelsea defender before the transfer deadline.

According to , Milan are considering a late swoop for Barcelona defender Christensen as they look to strengthen their backline before the transfer window shuts. The Dane, who joined Barca from Chelsea on a free transfer in 2022, still has one year left on his contract, but the Catalan giants are open to player sales this summer. Christensen has emerged as a concrete option for Milan after their 2-1 home defeat to Cremonese exposed key defensive weaknesses.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barcelona have already lost Inigo Martinez to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, and while they retain options such as Ronald Araujo, Pau Cubarsi, Jules Kounde, and Eric Garcia, head coach Hansi Flick is reluctant to sanction another departure in a packed season.

Milan’s interest in Christensen comes at a crucial moment, with the Rossoneri under pressure to recover quickly from their opening-day loss. Strengthening their defence has become a priority, and Christensen’s experience in La Liga and the Premier League makes him a valuable target. Alongside the adane international, Milan are also monitoring Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji as part of their late recruitment drive. For Barca, any sale could provide financial relief, but Flick’s need for depth means a transfer would risk leaving the squad short in central defence.

  • TELL ME MORE…

The 29-year-old has been a reliable figure for Barca, earning respect in the dressing room for his professionalism and versatility and even filling in midfield roles under Xavi in the past. Recently, he played a key role in Barcelona’s comeback win over Levante, coming off the bench to help secure a 3-2 victory. While he missed training earlier this week due to illness, he is otherwise fit and available for selection.

    WHAT NEXT FOR AC MILAN?

With the deadline closing on September 1 at 11:59 p.m., the Rossoneri are expected to push ahead with discussions in the coming days. Barcelona’s stance remains cautious, as Flick views Christensen as an important squad player. However, financial considerations could play a decisive role, and if Milan intensify their pursuit or if Akanji proves unattainable Christensen may find himself heading to San Siro.

Michael Bracewell to lead New Zealand in Pakistan T20I series

Tim Robinson is in line for a T20I debut since nine players are unavailable due to the IPL

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Apr-2024Allrounder Michael Bracewell will captain New Zealand on their T20I tour of Pakistan as he makes his return to international cricket after injury while uncapped batter Tim Robinson is in line for a debut.Fast bowler Will O’Rourke, who made his Test and ODI debuts earlier this season, has also been named.Bracewell hasn’t played for New Zealand since March last year after suffering a ruptured right Achillies playing for Worcestershire in the T20 Blast in June and then a broken finger. He recently took a career-best 8 for 41 in the Plunket Shield. He will lead a squad that is missing nine players who are on IPL duty as well as Will Young, who is taking up an overseas deal with Nottinghamshire, Tom Latham, awaiting the birth of his second child, and Tim Southee, who wasn’t considered for selection to give him an extended period of conditioning after the home season. The tour will play an important role in firming up the final spots in New Zealand’s T20 World Cup squad.”Michael has faced a long period on the sideline and it’s exciting to see him back playing cricket again,” selector Sam Wells said. “The fact he’s back playing at a high level after an Achilles rupture is testament to his hard work and application.”He’s a well-respected leader and has captaincy experience for Wellington along with New Zealand A and New Zealand XI teams, which we believe holds him in good stead to lead the group in Pakistan.”Uncapped 21-year-old Robinson has been included after he was the second-leading run-scorer in the Super Smash with 298 runs at 59.60 at a strike rate of 187.42, including 139 off 64 balls against Otago.”Tim is still very early in his domestic career but his natural ability and explosive power was on full display this season,” Wells said. “Combined with his outstanding fielding, we believe he has a skill-set that’s well suited to the format.”We’ve been delighted with Will’s early efforts in international cricket, in both the formats he’s played so far. Middlesex embrace batting demons as Ryan Higgins leads bonus-point quest

Relegation-threatened Middlesex closed a truncated opening day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Nottinghamshire on 162 for three as they began the last round of the 2023 season with one eye on Kent’s progress against Lancashire in Canterbury.Middlesex have to better Kent’s result or match it with at least one more bonus point than their rivals if they are to avoid joining Northamptonshire in Division Two next season.Given that they have won only two batting bonus points all season, skipper Toby Roland-Jones might have taken a few by surprise with his decision to bat first, although he might argue that his players are at least close to the four-an-over run-rate required in the 42 overs possible after rain delayed the start until 2pm.Whether they turn that into a substantial hand of points is another matter, especially since they have also lost Stevie Eskinazi, at least for the moment. He was hit on the head by a ball from Lyndon James on 23 and was not deemed fit to continue. It looks vital that the partnership between Ryan Higgins (60) and John Simpson (26), currently worth 69, turns into something substantial on day two.The day had begun with Nottinghamshire announcing the pending departure from the club of Jake Ball, their 32-year-old former England fast bowler, who was integral to the county winning the T20 Blast in 2017 and 2020 but has made only a handful of Championship appearances in recent seasons because of recurrent injury problems.Thankfully fit currently, and with Nottinghamshire already assured of remaining in Division One next season, Ball was given the chance to say a proper goodbye, making his first outing in the red-ball side since July in place of the Sri Lankan Asitha Fernando. He took the new ball alongside Brett Hutton, who has been the mainstay of the Nottinghamshire attack this year with Olly Stone and Luke Fletcher also sidelined. Neither of them started particularly well but took wickets in consecutive overs to remove both Middlesex openers with 33 on the board.Ball struck first, drawing an edge from Sam Robson for his 204th first-class wicket for the county, before Hutton straightened one to dismiss Mark Stoneman leg before.Eskinazi had an escape on four, dropped by Joe Clarke at first slip with Ball about to celebrate a second wicket, but the introduction of Lyndon James as Hutton took a breather brought a divided immediately when the all-rounder’s first delivery, angled in to Max Holden, took out the left-hander’s middle stump.Middlesex were 93 for three when Eskinazi, struck a nasty blow on the side of the head attempting to pull James, had to leave the field. Ironically, Eskinazi’s last Championship appearance in a disappointing season, against Lancashire two weeks ago, was as a concussion substitute after Holden was hurt during the warm-ups on day two.A brief stoppage for a shower at 117 for three was followed by another interruption after Steven Mullaney landed heavily making a diving stop, the Nottinghamshire skipper becoming the second injury casualty of the day, although he was soon back on the field. It will be determined overnight whether Middlesex need a concussion sub for Eskinazi. In the meantime, Higgins is taking the lead role on the field, reaching his second consecutive fifty and his ninth of the season, from 63 balls with six fours. The three changes made by Middlesex included the omission of Tim Murtagh, who is retiring at the end of the season at the age of 42, which means that his appearance in the eight-wicket defeat to Warwickshire at Lord’s, in which he took six for 83 in the first innings and eight in the match, was his final farewell after 23 years as a player, first at Surrey, and at Middlesex since 2007.

Rafael nega a acusação.

Ferguson could now have the new Dessers at Rangers & it's not Igamane

Glasgow Rangers produced yet another Jekyll and Hyde display in the Premiership, scoring a late winner to seal all three points against Dundee on Saturday evening.

Dundee went into the half-time interval holding a slim 2-1 advantage, which they soon stretched to 3–1 thanks to a goal from Scott Tiffoney.

Goals from James Tavernier, Tom Lawrence and then Cyriel Dessers – on his 100th appearance for the Light Blues – sealed another comeback victory.

Despite missing several chances throughout the tie, the Nigerian striker finished as the hero for Ferguson with his game-winning goal.

Cyriel Dessers’ display in numbers vs Dundee

Starting alongside Hamza Igamane, Ferguson once again operated with a 3-5-2, aiming to dominate the midfield, with plenty of chances being created for the two frontmen.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

It worked to an extent, with Dessers registering an incredible 12 shots – nine on target and three off – yet he missed five big chances.

He won only 50% of the duels he contested while losing possession 13 times and succeeding with just one dribble.

Persistence paid off, as he slotted the ball home with three minutes left, but this shouldn’t paper over the cracks.

Igamane was also far from his best, losing the ball 17 times along with having just one shot on target. Dessers, however, appears to have finally shifted his scapegoat tag, despite still missing chances on a regular basis.

Has this now been passed on to Jack Butland? Who endured another poor display for the Ibrox side.

Rangers could now have found the new Dessers

Butland enjoyed a relatively solid debut season for the Gers. His mistake in the dying minutes of the Scottish Cup final against Celtic proved costly, but it was deemed a one-off.

Fast-forward nearly a year later, and the Englishman has made a few high-profile mistakes throughout the current season, with journalist Josh Bunting stating back in December that he was “in a real rut of form”, while looking “shaky”. His mistake against Motherwell at the start of March was costly in the eventual 2-1 defeat.

Jack Butland

He also clattered into an opponent during the match against St Mirren on Boxing Day, giving away a penalty that saw the Gers suffer defeat.

Against Dundee, Butland took 42 touches, was accurate with just four of his 13 long ball attempts and completed only 65% of his passes.

It was his mistake for Dundee’s second goal which looked as though it could cost Rangers, however. A weak Simon Murray shot somehow spilt out of his hands and into the path of Joe Shaughnessy, who slotted the ball home to make it 2-0 to the home side.

Given that this wasn’t his first mistake of the campaign, might his time at Ibrox be coming to an end? Especially with a new manager arriving in the summer.

A large section of the fanbase certainly hope so. His penalty shoot-out heroics against Fenerbahçe a few weeks ago are now a distant memory. Mistakes like these can cost the club titles, no doubt about that.

With Dessers having turned the corner, Butland is surely the new high-profile villain for the Ibrox faithful.

Ferguson upgrade: 49ers can hire "one of the best coaches ever" at Rangers

Even though Barry Ferguson continues to impress as interim Rangers manager, the 49ers ownership should instead hire “one of the best coaches ever”.
