Sold for £10m: Celtic struck gold with star who’s now worth millions less

Celtic had a busy month in August with a number of transfer dealings completed for players to arrive at Parkhead and to move on from Glasgow.

Brendan Rodgers was able to bring in Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah on permanent deals to bolster his squad, after they were initially on loan during the 2023/24 campaign, having landed Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo the previous month.

The Hoops then got busier towards the end of the summer transfer window as they landed Alex Valle on loan from Barcelona, before signing Arne Engels, Luke McCowan, and Auston Trusty on deadline day.

Michael Johnston was one player who was allowed to leave on a permanent basis, joining Championship side West Bromwich Albion, but he was not the only ace to depart Parkhead.

Danish central midfielder Matt O’Riley left to join Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League for a reported fee of more than £25m, which is a Scottish and Celtic record transfer fee.

It will be interesting to see whether the midfield wizard goes on to be a roaring success in England, like Virgil van Dijk, or struggles and plummets in value, like Gary Hooper.

One player Celtic played a masterclass by selling at the right time was versatile defender Josip Juranovic, after his impressive spell in Scotland.

How much Celtic paid for Josip Juranovic

In the summer of 2021, the Scottish giants reportedly splashed out a fee of £2.5m to sign the right-back from Legia Warsaw on a five-year deal.

The Croatia international hit the ground running in Glasgow with an impressive debut season, as he showcased his quality in and out of possession, whilst being deployed at left-back and right-back during his time in Scotland.

Juranovic played 26 matches in the Scottish Premiership during the 2021/22 campaign, under Ange Postecoglou, and helped his side to keep 11 clean sheets in those games – winning 56% of his duels in total.

Former Celtic star Josip Juranovic.

The talented ace also scored three goals and recorded one assist in those matches. However, he was unfortunate to end the season with one assist because he created four ‘big chances’ and made 1.3 key passes per game on average, which suggests that his teammates let him down with their wasteful finishing.

Juranovic then scored one goal and provided one assist in ten Premiership outings during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign under Postecoglou.

During the January transfer window at the start of 2023, Bundesliga side Union Berlin swooped in to sign the Croatian gem for a reported fee of up to £10m, following on from his impressive 18 months in Glasgow.

Former Celtic defender Josip Juranovic.

This shows that Celtic hit the jackpot when they signed the defender for £2.5m from Legia Warsaw because his value soared during his time at Parkhead and they made a significant profit on him, despite having the full-back at the club for less than two full seasons.

The Hoops also struck gold with Juranovic because he has not gone from strength to strength since making the move to Germany, instead dropping in value.

Josip Juranovic's current market value

At the time of writing (23/09/2024), Transfermarkt values the 29-year-old defender at €7.5m (£6.3m) and this means that his value has plummeted since moving on from the Hoops.

Celtic, therefore, hit the jackpot by selling him for up to £10m as his value has dropped by millions in the subsequent 18 months or so since that move was completed.

This shows that the Scottish giants cashed in on him at the right time instead of holding on too long and allowing his value to drop during his time at Parkhead. They sold him for a significant fee, and a profit on what they initially paid for him, and have now watched on as his value has dropped.

Former Celtic stars Josip Juranovic and Jota.

Juranovic has produced two goals and four assists in the Bundesliga since his move to Berlin but has struggled with the physicality of the game in Germany.

He lost 70% of his aerial duels in the 2022/23 campaign, winning 0.3 per match, and then lost 57% of his aerial contests in the 2023/24 season, winning just 0.1 per game, which shows that opposition players have found it too easy to beat him in the air.

Ahead of the January transfer window that Juranovic was sold in, Celtic swooped to sign Alistair Johnston from CF Montreal for a reported fee of £3.5m, possibly in anticipation that the Croatian would leave, and that has turned out to be a blinder of a deal.

Alistair Johnston's current market value

At the time of writing (23/09/2024), the Canada international is valued at €8.5m (£7.1m) by Transfermarkt and this means that he is currently worth more than Juranovic.

It also means that his value has soared since arriving at Parkhead for a fee of £3.5m, which shows that the Hoops struck gold when they signed the impressive full-back for Postecoglou.

His performances on the pitch for Celtic also back up his impressive value, as he outperformed Juranovic’s first full Premiership campaign in his first full year in the division after an initial five-month spell at the club prior to the 2023/24 season.

As you can see in the table above, they offered a similar level of quality defensively but Johnston was significantly more creative from his right-back berth, with over twice as many ‘big chances’ created and five times as many assists, in six more appearances.

The Canadian whiz has also enjoyed a terrific start to the current campaign, with one goal and four ‘big chances’ created in five Premiership appearances, and could see his value continue to soar if his current level of form continues throughout the rest of the season.

Therefore, Celtic should be delighted with their business in selling Juranovic for a significant fee and investing in Johnston for £3.5m, as it has turned out brilliantly for them on all fronts as it stands.

'Means more to a Vermonter' – Unseeded Vermont Catamounts cap historic NCAA College Cup run, give state without major professional team reason to celebrate

The magic of college soccer: A small school from a small state brought a community together, lifting a NCAA trophy

Rob Dow still doesn't know why his striker didn't shoot earlier. It was the 113th minute of the College Cup final between Vermont and Marshall, and Maximilian Kissel had done everything right: judge the flight of the ball, take it in stride, shake off a defender. But when one-on-one with the keeper, a championship to win, Kissel insisted on doing it the hard way. Instead of bashing it home with his preferred right foot, he cut onto his left.

That was not supposed to happen.

"I was like, 'Just put it in the net!'" Dow admitted.

But it worked. Of course it did. The keeper scrambled, Kissel slotted. Golden goal, shirts off, team on the pitch, a first team NCAA Championship for Vermont.

There aren't many stories like this in college soccer these days. A power five conference school has won nine of the last 10 soccer national championships. Vermont started the season in the top 25, and despite having a couple of good NCAA Tournament showings in recent years, were not among the favorites to make any noise – even when they won the America East conference tournament title.

But they fought their way there all the same, a small school, coming from a state without a professional sports team, bringing a community together and lifting a trophy at the end of it. The magic of college soccer, it seems, lives on.

"It means more to a Vermonter," Dow said last week's 2-1 title-game victory over No. 13 Marshall. "I'm just so happy for our team, so happy to be able to provide these special emotional experiences for our state."

ImagnWhere it all began

Ask Dow, though, and he will tell you that this has been coming – or at least, the pieces were in place. During the COVID-19-disrupted college season, Vermont assembled a group of businessmen and advisors to figure out how to make them relevant in the national landscape. The goal at first? Become a consistent top 25 program.

"We wrote this case statement," Dow recalled. "To prioritize the elements within our program that needed to be elevated. That's in scheduling, staffing, recruiting, and facilities."

A couple of NCAA Tournament appearances later, and the ambitions were even higher. The Catamounts made it to the quarterfinals in 2022. That run changed things.

"We were like, 'Let's rewrite this,' " Dow said.

Subsequently, 2023 brought two NCAA Tournament wins. They scraped in as an at-large bid, and knocked off No. 12 Central Florida before losing a chaotic round of 16 clash at West Virginia – despite outshooting the Mountaineers in hostile territory. This season, then, was a question of revamping and fine-tuning. Dow knew he had the pieces – and the experience, to boot. It was just a question of the big moments.

The regular season suggested as such. Vermont settled for second in the America East before winning the conference tournament to clinch an automatic NCAA Tournament bid. There were some fine players to work with. Yaniv Bazini, a redshirt senior, finished the campaign with 14 goals. Kissel tallied 11. Canadian midfielder Sydney Wathuta set a school record with 14 assists – the second-most in the nation.

The Catamounts weren't bad at the other end, either. They conceded the third-fewest goals in the conference, and kept more clean sheets than every team except Bryant (the school Vermont beat in the conference tournament final.)

AdvertisementImagnThe run itself

The tournament, of course, proved a different challenge. The America East lacks the prestige handed out to power five conferences, and even in an era in which collegiate sports leagues are losing touch with geographic boundaries, Vermont was always going to have it tough. But, at first, it was all made to look rather easy. Iona were dispatched, 5-0, at home. No. 5 Hofstra, on the road, were done away with in a nervy 2-1 win.

But then, things got tricky – chaotic, even – especially for Dow. His pregnant wife was admitted into hospital the Tuesday after his team returned from Hofstra. Less than 48 hours later, at 9:25 on Thanksgiving morning, she gave birth to their son. Dow had less than a day to take it all in before getting on a plane – this time to California.

Then came a five-hour flight and late kick off against San Diego. It culminated in a 1-0 win. His wife, meanwhile, was well looked after by a community that was steadily becoming aware of what might be happening for the Catamounts. There were freshly cooked meals and offers to drive their eldest son to soccer practice.

"Our community stepped up. Small businesses, neighbors, were like 'What do you want?'… They knew and they heard, and they just wanted to do their part," Dow said.

All the while, there was still some soccer to be played. Vermont's seeding meant that they wouldn't play another home game. That didn't matter. They beat No. 2 Pittsburgh 2-0, to book a spot in the College Cup. That night, Vermont put just two shots on target – and found the net on both.

ImagnWhat it all means

Meanwhile, a community came alive. Vermont isn't a traditional sports state. The closest thing they have to a professional soccer setup is the Vermont Green, a wonderfully branded but admittedly middling USL League Two side. The Catamounts, based on Burlington, aren't exactly a sporting power, either – a handful of individual national skiing championships marking their main NCAA success.

Vermont men’s hockey team has made two trips to the Frozen Four, in 1996 and 2009. In basketball, the shining moment came when Vernon famously upset No. 4 Syracuse  in the first round of the 2005 NCAA tournament.  So in many ways, this whole thing was new.

"When teams like our hockey team and our basketball team are doing well they're like the Real Madrid and Barcelona, of Vermont, you know," Dow said.

And Dow could tell – from both inside and outside the school. This is a small athletic department. But everyone chipped in, Dow said, catering to every need. Whether it be yet another maddeningly formulaic eating schedule of hotel eggs followed by chicken, or scrambling to get the right sort of cleats days before the College Cup – Vermont plays on turf, not grass, and had the wrong sort of studs in their boots – this was a collective effort.

"It's December, and we're playing on grass and we're packing up to go to North Carolina. I'm like, 'I think we're missing something here.' You don't want to lose because, because of your footing," Dow said. "That's the support, and those people put in a ton of hours."

ImagnThe College Cup

Dow insists that the goal was always to win a championship, that there was no pressure attached to any potential history, and that each game was treated in isolation. But context is everything here. And sometimes these things just come together.

Not that they made it easy on themselves – 82 minutes into the national semifinal, Vermont seemed certain to be going out. They hadn't put a single shot on target against a well disciplined Denver side. They had created in moments, but a clear chance never arrived. Of course, that all changed, Yaniv Banzini sneaking behind the back line, controlling and firing home to equalize in the 83rd. Penalties were needed to win it. Denver's Trevor Wright fired his over, and the Catamounts secured a spot in the final.

And then came all of the real chaos. Lost in the madness is that their opponent in the title game, Marshall, was also unseeded heading into the tournament. This wouldn't have been a bad story for them, either (although they have won a national title before.) National title games are supposed to be cagey. For 80 minutes, it seemed that Vermont had fallen short – with Marshall holding a 1-0 lead.

But then, in the 81st minute, a one-two and incisive finish brought Vermont level. By extra time, the golden goal felt inevitable.

"[Kissel] had the ice in his veins to dribble him and put it on his weak foot," Dow said.

There weren't supposed to be students on campus by the time Vermont rolled back into Burlington. This place, usually full of life, even in harsh winters, was supposed to be barren as the semester had ended. But as the Vermont bus crawled onto campus – a police escort ensuring their safe arrival – hundreds of students were waiting. Dow lifted the trophy to cheers from a beloved student body, experiencing the kind of success this school – this state – had never seen before.

"We've got people who have no idea what an offside is, or that you get two yellow cards and you're out of the game," Dow said, "but they're watching, and joining with their families and showing a ton of pride for their state and what we're representing."

Rusyn starts & Browne dropped: Sunderland predicted lineup vs Cardiff

Sunderland supporters won't quite know what to expect from their side this Championship season as the Black Cats head into the great unknown with an unproven EFL manager at the helm.

Regis Le Bris was eventually appointed as the fresh face to lead the Wearside outfit after much deliberation from the powers that be at the Stadium of Light, hopeful that the ex-Lorient manager can be a rip-roaring success from the dug-out, and not another disappointment akin to Michael Beale.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

The expectant Sunderland masses will be hopeful that the new French manager can help their side regain their mojo and fight again for a playoff spot in the challenging division, having very much lost their way last season with a revolving door of managers, falling to a dire 16th place finish come the conclusion of the sobering 46-game schedule.

There has been some positive business that will excite even the most pessimistic set of supporters, with experienced Championship midfielder Alan Browne a shrewd capture from Preston North End, but a new potent striker still manages to elude the Black Cats.

Any apprehension about the campaign to come will soon be pushed to one side if Sunderland manage to collect an opening day win at the expense of Cardiff City however, as a lengthy trip to Wales now awaits.

Who will start the clash? We're predicting the following XI to take to the field…

1 GK – Anthony Patterson

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Sunderland have added more depth to the goalkeeper spots this summer, with the arrival of ex-Brentford shot-stopper Simon Moore into the ranks, but Anthony Patterson will undoubtedly remain as the number one option even under the new regime of Le Bris.

The 24-year-old only missed one Championship clash all season long last time out and even helped himself to an admirable clean sheet return of 13, which will stand him in good stead to remain in between the sticks for the lengthy journey to Cardiff to start the new campaign.

2 RB – Trai Hume

Trai Hume

Likewise, Trai Hume's spot in the Black Cats first-team is similarly set in stone, with Sunderland fans just relieved that the Northern Irishman is still available for selection for the Bluebirds contest, rather than lining up for a new team.

The energetic full-back can actually one-up Patterson, having played every game possible to him last season in the second tier, and he has been present for all of the friendly matches under Le Bris leading up to competitive football starting again.

3 CB – Aji Alese

Aji Alese

It's less than ideal for the new Sunderland boss that both Dan Ballard and Jenson Seelt are out injured on the eve of a new season starting, but this will have been known to Le Bris for some time, hence Aji Alese's involvement in pre-season seeing him line up in a centre-back spot.

The former West Ham United defender will hope he can have a more positive campaign individually alongside his teammates, having only been fit enough to make eight second-tier appearances, starting with Cardiff away.

4 CB – Luke O'Nien

Luke O'Nien will aim to be a steady head again this season, particularly away at Cardiff, lining up next to his potential makeshift partner in Alese.

The gritty Black Cats number 13 was present for 43 games last campaign in the Championship as a mainstay of the starting XI, averaging 6.1 ball recoveries per clash.

Le Bris will want his troops to be energetic and brave from minute one against the Bluebirds, with O'Nien potentially setting the tone.

5 LB – Dennis Cirkin

The Black Cats were plagued with injury issues during their dire 23/24 showing, with Dennis Cirkin a regular fixture of the Stadium of Light treatment room, as the former Tottenham Hotspur youth player made just eight league appearances in total.

Cirkin will pray that he is now free of these constant setbacks, with his performances in pre-season presumably impressing Le Bris, with the attack-minded full-back firing home a strike in the 2-2 draw with Olympique de Marseille that closed out the pre-season run-outs.

6 RM – Patrick Roberts

Sunderland forward Patrick Roberts.

Roberts will be thankful that Ian Poveda isn't quite at the required match sharpness to usurp his spot in the Sunderland first-team just yet, meaning the former Celtic ace will more than likely start the opening clash of the season.

The experienced winger did manage to tee up Cirkin's goal against Marseille and will be eager to drastically improve on his numbers from last campaign in the second tier, with no goals registered whatsoever from the ex-Fulham youth player.

7 CM – Adil Aouchiche

Although Browne will have been purchased to start week in week out for his new employers, the former Lilywhites midfielder could find his central midfield spot is taken up by Adil Aouchiche for the trip to Wales.

Aouchiche only needed two minutes of action against Marseille to fire home, converting a penalty late on to help his Championship side draw 2-2, and he could well get the nod over Browne subsequently.

Moreover, Le Bris might well take a shining to the young French presence, having overseen his development partly when the pair were together at Lorient.

8 CM – Dan Neil

Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil.

There could well have been a very different reality at the Stadium of Light this summer, with a worry at one point that Dan Neil was reluctant to stay put in Wearside, owing to the ongoing no-manager saga.

Now, Neil will aim to have another positive personal season, that could help the Black Cats put together a promotion charge, with the Black Cats captain amassing four goals and five assists from 42 league games.

9 CM – Jobe Bellingham

Jobe Bellingham will equally want to push on and have an even more stellar campaign to come, having had his major breakout moment in the spotlight at Sunderland during the 23/24 season, by firing in seven strikes from 47 clashes.

The Black Cats might well not want their 18-year-old wonderkid to perform too well, however, owing to interest still being there from the likes of Serie A titans Lazio, but he looks certain of a starting spot against Cardiff.

10 LM – Jack Clarke

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke

Likewise, Sunderland will be anxious about their chances of keeping Jack Clarke beyond this August, but will still want Clarke to be at his tricky best rampaging forward down the left in the opening Championship contests.

Losing the ex-Tottenham Hotspur attacker would be a major blow, with the slick winger picking up 15 league goals to become his team's top scorer last season, but it could be a reality they'll have grow accustomed to very soon.

Liverpool making progress in move to sign £52m defender who "scores goals"

In his first transfer window at the helm at Liverpool, new manager Arne Slot appears eager to bring a number of fresh faces to Anfield ahead of next season's Premier League campaign.

Reds ready moves for new defensive players

The big news out of Anfield surrounds Liverpool's ongoing search for a new central defender. With Virgil van Dijk's future at the club uncertain, the Reds have been moving quickly to assess possible replacements for the Dutchman.

A longstanding target for Liverpool has been Lille teenager Leny Yoro. The 18-year-old is said to be available for £51million this summer, however, it now looks like the Reds' rivals Manchester United could beat them to the signing with the Red Devils now the preferred buyer for the young defender.

With a deal for Yoro potentially off the table, Liverpool have moved on to other targets most recent of which has been Juventus' Gleison Bremer. The Brazilian defender is valued at £59million by his current club with the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Manchester United also eyeing moves for the player.

Juventus defender Gleison Bremer

Whilst Slot's search for a new centre-back continues for now, the Reds appear to be edging closer towards agreeing a deal for one of their top targets.

Liverpool make progress in quest to sign European defender

As Liverpool's quest to find a new central defender continues, sources have told Caught Offside that the Reds are making progress in negotiations over a potential transfer move for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Goncalo Inacio. The outlet claims that the 22-year-old has a €60million (£52million) release clause in his current deal with the Portuguese champions which Liverpool would have no issue matching.

Caught Offside even goes on to state that Sporting could be willing to compromise on this fee, allowing Inacio to leave for an even lower price this summer. This update follows the news from last month that Liverpool were monitoring the player with this latest development confirming that contact has been made and negotiations are well underway.

Goncalo Inacio in action for Sporting Lisbon

Inacio has just returned from representing his country at Euro 2024 where he only managed to make two appearances for Portugal as they fell at the quarter-final stage of the competition. Despite this, the 22-year-old has earned no shortage of acclaim from his current national team coach Roberto Martinez who said of the player:

“Goncalo Inacio has the most sought-after profile in European football. A centre-back, who is left-footed, and plays in the middle, has quality, scores goals and is intelligent.”

Inacio's domestic season saw him play a vital part in Sporting's march to the Liga Portugal title. The central defender featured 49 times for his side in all competitions and managed to find the back of the net on four occasions, showing his ability to be a threat on the goal-scoring front. With proven pedigree on both the domestic and international stage, there is no doubt that Inacio could be the perfect player in Liverpool's defence next season.

Tim David, James Faulkner help Hobart Hurricanes see off Sydney Sixers

James Vince’s fifty in vain as Sixers fall short in 179 chase

Alex Malcolm10-Dec-2020Half-centuries to Tim David and Colin Ingram and some outstanding pace bowling from Riley Meredith and James Faulkner helped the Hobart Hurricanes kick off BBL 10 with an outstanding win over the defending champions the Sydney Sixers at Bellerive Oval. The Hurricanes utilised the new Power Surge rule to great effect rescuing their innings from 2 for 4 in the second over to post 9 for 178. The power of Ingram and David combined beautifully with the latter smashing his highest BBL score, including four boundaries in the first over of the power surge. The Sixers looked in cruise control in the chase with James Vince at his vintage best producing 67 off 41 in a 116-run stand with Jack Edwards as they claimed the power boost point for the highest score at the 10-over mark of the chase. But that was the only competition point they got. Faulkner and Meredith used guile and extreme pace to strangle the Sixers as they fell 16 runs short.X-factor no factorThe Hurricanes slumped to 2 for 4 after seven deliveries on a surface that offered a little bit of spin and grip for Ben Manenti to force Will Jacks to bunt a return catch while D’Arcy Short fell for a first-ball duck, edging Ben Dwarshuis to slip. Ingram and Peter Handscomb were forced to rebuild but fell further into the mire when Handscomb was stumped in the ninth over. With the score at just 3 for 72 after 10 overs, and only one inexperienced yet specialist batsman to come in David, this was exactly the scenario designed for the X-factor substitute to be used, with the possibility of subbing in an extra batsman in Caleb Jewell for one of the bowlers and backing Short, Jacks, and David to provide the four overs required by the fifth bowler. But the Hurricanes opted to back in their selected XI, as did the Sydney Sixers, and neither team made a change.David turns Goliath in the Power SurgeThe Hurricanes did use the Power Surge perfectly. Ingram played an excellent hand to counterattack and the scoreboard kept moving. He was particularly powerful inside-out over cover and over midwicket striking seven boundaries and a six. But he was denied a second by a staggering Superman-like one-handed save from Jordan Silk at deep midwicket. With Ingram set and David prepared to launch, the Hurricanes called the Surge in the 15th over and the Sixers wrongly gambled with Steve O’Keefe. David has an excellent record against spin in T20 internationals for Singapore and he smashed four boundaries in the over. Dan Christian pulled it back in the next over forcing a mishit from Ingram on his way to figures of 3 for 36. But David kept rolling smashing his first BBL half-century on debut for his new team. Nathan Ellis clubbed two sixes in five balls to help get the total to 178 after such a poor start.Regal VinceThe Englishman picked up right where he left off from the last BBL where he was a key part of the Sixers’ title. He walked out for the fifth ball of the innings after Josh Philippe was pinned plumb in front by Faulkner having survived a similar shout first ball. Vince accelerated immediately, facing just one dot ball in his first 18 deliveries, racing to 32. He struck eight boundaries and two sixes, each as elegant as the last. Even a top edge of the express pace of Meredith looked silky and intentional. He allowed Edwards to find his feet and Vince never felt pressured despite the lack of strike rotation at times. The Sixers cruised to the Power Boost point inside nine overs and then took the Power Surge in the 11th to try and break the back of the chase.Bowlers bite backThe Power Surge yielded only 18 runs which seemed to force Vince to go harder. He was dropped by David and trapped in front by Faulker walking across the stumps to lap sweep. Handscomb turned to Meredith and his extra pace did for Edwards as he nudged 150kph. The Sixers may have made a tactical error not splitting Daniel Hughes and Jordan Silk with a power-hitter and paid a dear price. The pair scored just one boundary between them in 24 balls with both striking at less than a run-a-ball. It left Dan Christian and Carlos Brathwaite with too much to do as Meredith and Nathan Ellis closed out the game with some outstanding death bowling.

Majrekar: Kohli and de Villiers miscalculated against CSK

The Chennai Super Kings built a squad for the slow, turning pitches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. On Sunday, when they were all but out of IPL 2020, they got to play in conditions not dissimilar to those back in Chennai, and pulled off a performance that made you wonder how their season might have gone had Covid-19 not transplanted the tournament to the UAE.They were abetted by a Royal Challengers Bangalore batting display that seldom got out of second gear, which set them a target of just 146, but some of the hallmarks of the classic Super Kings performance were also on show. Accurate medium-fast bowling with frequent changes of pace, an expert middle-overs strangulation by spin featuring typically clever MS Dhoni fields, and a controlled chase featuring timely six-hitting to keep the required rate in check. There was also, as has often been the case, an opposition attack that wasn’t entirely suited to the conditions.Along the way, there was even one unusual detail, a young player who batted with – let’s use the word – spark, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who anchored the chase with an unbeaten 51-ball 65 while Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu brought urgency at the other end. With their eight-wicket win, the Super Kings kept the barely flickering flame of their campaign alive, just about, but the result might have more of an impact on the Royal Challengers. They began the game with a chance of rising to the top of the table and ended it with their chances of a top-two finish significantly diminished.A brisk beginningChoosing to bat, the Royal Challengers made just the kind of start they would have wanted on a slow pitch, with Aaron Finch and Devdutt Padikkal showing every intention to maximise their returns when the ball was at its newest. They hit three fours and a six in the first three overs before Sam Curran came on and made a vital intervention, both in terms of immediate and longer-term impact, getting Finch out with a slower delivery.Padikkal hit two more opportunistic leg-side fours in the next two overs, helping the Royal Challengers end the powerplay at 46 for 1, before falling to the first ball of the seventh over, going after the left-arm spin of Mitchell Santner – who was playing his first game of the season – but failing to clear long-on.Kohli and de VilliersThose two names can give anyone the shivers if they’re together for 68 balls, but on this day, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers only put on 82 off those 68 balls. This was partly down to intent – there’s a case to be made that de Villiers coming in as early as the seventh over causes him to bat more watchfully than he might if he enters in the second half of the innings – partly down to the slowness of the pitch, and partly down to some smart spin bowling from Santner, Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja. The Royal Challengers faced some flak for promoting two left-handers above de Villiers against Kings XI Punjab ten days ago but the thinking behind the move wasn’t entirely unsound, even if it failed to come off that day. Today, with the Super Kings attack featuring three international-class spinners who all turn the ball away from the right-hander, there may have been more of a case to push a left-hander up the order, particularly given that the Royal Challengers had an excellent candidate for that role today in Moeen Ali.Ruturaj Gaikwad after hitting his first IPL fifty•BCCIThey didn’t choose that option, and backed de Villiers instead. It was a perfectly reasonable choice, of course, but it didn’t come off today, as the three spinners got into their groove, bowling just short of a length at a good pace and not giving away the drive.Against Kohli, Dhoni exaggerated the effectiveness of this mode of attack by placing a straight midwicket and a straight extra-cover (almost a short mid-off) to prevent easy singles down to long-on and long-off. Kohli, not a natural sweeper, didn’t look to hit squarer to evade these fielders, and kept backing his ability down the ground. It brought him a six and a four, but they were the only boundaries in his innings, and it also brought Tahir and Jadeja difficult caught-and-bowled chances that they put down. When a becalmed de Villiers holed out for a 39 off 36, the Royal Challengers were 128 for 3 in 17.3 overs, and the death-overs flourish they’d been building towards didn’t happen. Deepak Chahar and Curran varied their pace well and offered no drive balls or width, conceding just 20 off the last three overs while dismissing de Villiers, Moeen, Kohli and Chris Morris.Pace onto the batChahar, Curran and Monu Singh – who made his debut for the Super Kings in his third season with the franchise – are all medium-fast at best, and on this pitch bowled plenty of slower balls as well.Morris, Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini are all genuine quicks, and they didn’t vary their pace as much as their Super Kings counterparts did today. Kohli picked this out as a key differentiator between the two sides at the post-match presentation, and the economy rates of the Royal Challengers told a story. The three Super Kings seamers between them conceded 70 in nine overs. The three Royal Challengers quicks conceded 84 in 8.4 overs, despite Saini bowling two quiet overs to Dhoni towards the end of the game. But as much as pace onto the bat helped the Super Kings batsmen, they still needed to put it away. Du Plessis used the pace brilliantly early on, picking up two fours and a six in the fine-leg region, off Morris and Siraj. Gaikwad, meanwhile, used his feet well against both spin and seam to get to the pitch and hit over the infield. By the end of the powerplay, the Super Kings were 48 for 1 with du Plessis out to Morris.Rayudu and Gaikwad seal the dealThe momentum didn’t go away with the wicket, as Gaikwad continued to use his feet to launch Moeen for a big six over long-off, and Rayudu clattered a six and a four in an erratic tenth over in which Saini kept bowling short and wide. A typical Rayudu charge down the wicket at the end of the 12th over, to smack Siraj over long-on, brought the equation down to 41 off 48.The Super Kings were never going to lose from there, but there was a case for them to promote one of their hitters in Curran, Santner or Jadeja at the fall of Rayudu’s wicket – when they needed 33 off 39 – to improve their net run rate further. Dhoni came in instead, and finished with an unbeaten 19 off 21 as the Super Kings wrapped it up with eight balls to spare.
