Man Utd gem who left for £0 would be even better than Dorgu under Amorim

Manchester United made two signings in the January transfer window, bringing in Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu.

The new Red Devils pair have caught the eye so far with Heaven costing Ruben Amorim’s side an undisclosed compensation fee, buying him out of his Arsenal contract six months early.

So far, the 18-year-old has made four appearances in the famous red shirt. That includes a 45-minute cameo against the Gunners in his first Premier League game, before making starts against Real Sociedad in the Europa League and Leicester City in the top flight.

Heaven has made a real impression so far for United, and the same can certainly be said for Dorgu, in his short United career.

Why Patrick Dorgu has been a good signing for Man Utd

20-year-old Denmark international Dorgu has made a great start to life at Old Trafford. He made the move from Serie A strugglers Lecce in the winter transfer window for £25m up front, and a further £4.2m in add-ons.

Dorgu has made a big impression already with Football statistician Statman Dave stating the wing-back is a player who “brings balance and quality” to Amorim’s United side.

He has played six times so far, particularly impressing against Sociedad in the Europa League, where he made major contributions both in defence and attack, winning a penalty from which Bruno Fernandes scored.

One of the key features of Dorgu’s game is his speed. The 20-year-old is rapid and able to cover so much ground in a short amount of time. Of course, this is helpful to United in transitional situations, helping them get up the pitch and hurt teams on the counter very quickly.

The January arrival has been a revelation for the Red Devils, some might say the perfect addition at wing-back for Amorim’s system.

However, if things had gone differently years ago, perhaps the United boss could have had another flying wingback at his disposal.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

Man United academy gem is now similar to Dorgu

United’s academy can take credit for producing several exciting talents in the Premier League, or at least contributing to their footballing education.

One player who certainly fits that latter category is Dwight McNeil.

Dwight McNeil in action for Everton

He was in the Red Devils academy in his younger days, notably training alongside the likes of Brandon Williams and Angel Gomes but was released by the club. It was a decision that certainly left him heartbroken.

After making his way through the Burnley academy, he became a vital part of the Clarets first-team under Sean Dyche.

Now plying his trade at Everton, McNeil has also become a key player for the Toffees. Although he has played in a number of positions, the Englishman has excelled out wide on the left, where Amorim surely would have deployed him if given the chance. This term, he has three goals and three assists in 13 Premier League games but has been out for some time with a knee injury.

One of the key features of McNeil’s game is his threat from open play when crossing the ball. Described by Statman Dave as an “excellent crosser”, the 25-year-old can whip a deadly delivery into the box, as he showed in Everton’s 5-1 win against Brighton a few seasons ago, a game where he also scored two goals.

To get an idea of how McNeil might have suited this United system, a comparison via FBref between his and Dorgu’s stats can be drawn. The Everton ace completes more crosses than the Dane per 90 minutes, with 0.79 compared to 0.39, but does complete less progressive carries per 90, with 2.44 compared to Dorgu’s 3.45.

On reflection, McNeil could have been a fantastic option for United. Of course, he left the club at a young age, but seeing how his career has turned out, perhaps they wish they still had someone in the squad so suited to Amorim’s system.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

He is statistically similar to Dorgu, and worth £25m according to Football Transfers, around the fee United paid for their new wing-back up front in January. He is surely a player Amoirm would have loved to have at his disposal.

Arteta has told Arsenal board to sign £150m star with next few weeks "key"

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told the Gunners board to try and sign a marquee player this summer, with this next month described as pivotal in determining whether the Premier League heavyweights can get a deal done.

Andrea Berta agrees Arsenal deal as new director with targets identified

Over the weekend, news surfaced that Arsenal agreed a deal with ex-Atletico Madrid chief Andrea Berta to become their new sporting director.

The 53-year-old left Atletico after 12 fruitful years at the Wanda Metropolitano, and his availability piqued serious interest from Arsenal, who entered negotiations and sought to tempt him with a move to the Emirates.

Following positive talks with the Italian, both Arsenal and Berta shook hands on an agreement for him to succeed Edu Gaspar, following his departure from N5 in November.

This comes as excellent news for Arsenal and Arteta, with Berta expected to immediately get to work on the club’s transfer activity. According to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, the chief has already identified targets ahead of next season, and one of them is Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

The Sweden international, who currently stands out as a superstar striker in the Premier League, is enjoying yet another fine season at St James’ Park with 22 goals from 32 appearances in all competitions.

Two of those strikes actually came against Arteta’s side, once in the top flight and another in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, so Arsenal know full well just how dangerous he can be in front of goal.

Newcastle are adopting a firm stance when it comes to selling Isak, though, with some reports suggesting that the Magpies won’t even entertain bids of less than £150 million (Ben Jacobs).

However, Arteta is believed to be a massive fan of Isak, and won’t completely call time on the chase for his signature this summer – despite the many hurdles in Arsenal’s way.

Arteta has told Arsenal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United

According to a report from Spain, the tactician is more determined than ever to land him.

Indeed, it is believed that Arteta has told the Arsenal board to try and strike a deal for Isak, who has become their main target ahead of next campaign. The club are prepared to mount a challenge for the 25-year-old in response to their manager’s request, and Arsenal believe he could be the player who transforms them into eventual Premier League champions.

As well as this, the next few weeks are apparently “key” when it comes to Isak’s future and a potential move from Arsenal.

Ex-Nigeria international Sunday Oliseh has described the former Real Sociedad star as one of the most exciting and “underrated” players in the division, and there is no arguing Isak’s quality. That being said, it is exactly why Newcastle will come as a major hurdle for Arsenal.

Their demands are set to be extravagant, so Arteta’s side may need to smash their transfer record if they have any hope of reaching an agreement.

O time mandante abriu o placar aos oito minutos do primeiro tempo.

'It's a big headache', but Pujara expects India to pick Pant ahead of Karthik

Who does the finishing job then? Hardik Pandya is the best option, says the India Test batter

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-20228:40

Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik?

Cheteshwar Pujara called the task of picking one of Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant in the India XI for the Asia Cup game against Pakistan a “big headache”. But, unless both are fielded, one has to miss out, and Pujara picked Pant over Karthik for a spot in the team.”Firstly, it’s a big headache for the team management as both [Pant and Karthik] are doing really well in the T20 format,” Pujara said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out programme ahead of the India vs Pakistan game in Dubai. “The tough call is whether you want someone to bat at No. 5 or you want a finisher who can bat at No. 6 or 7.Related

Rohit's India will experiment, even if they make mistakes

Suryakumar: Behind square, one step ahead of bowlers

Posers for India: Same old top three? Pant or Karthik?

“So, I would say, if you want someone at No. 5, Rishabh Pant is a better choice. But if you want your batting line-up to have a very good finisher who is likely to play ten or 20 balls and give you 40-50 runs, I think DK [Karthik] is the better option.”With India trying out a number of players over the last few months for one reason or another, both Pant and Karthik have had decent runs in the format. But now Virat Kohli is back, and all of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are around, which has changed the scenario. Those names, however, don’t include a left-hander, another reason Pant might pip Karthik to the post, Pujara reasoned. “Personally, knowing the team management (and) knowing how things work around the Indian team, I would think they might go with Rishabh Pant because he is a left-hander and that gives the team a bit of balance with a left-and-right combination. But how about both figuring in the playing XI? Possibly at the expense of a top-order batter? If the top three of Rohit, Rahul and Kohli is fixed, could Suryakumar make way?The team’s not big enough for both of them, or is it?•PTI

“Suryakumar is one of our top T20 players, so I would definitely want him in the side because he can win you games… he is someone who has done really well for Mumbai Indians [in the IPL],” Pujara said. “Whenever I’ve seen him at No. 4, he has done exceptionally well.”So I don’t think the team management will leave him out. If Rishabh and Karthik both have to play, then I think you have to drop one of the top-order [batters], which is impossible. So I don’t think both can make the XI.”Karthik has been India’s finisher of choice in T20Is this year. He boasts of a strike rate of 171.60 in the death overs in 2022 and has the ability to manufacture shots soon after getting in. If he is dropped, who does that job?”I would prefer Hardik to do that role,” Pujara said. “He is someone who can strike from ball one, and his strike rate is always above 150. I don’t think Rishabh can do that job because he needs a little more time. And if he [Pant] comes in to bat, it should be somewhere around ten or 12 overs. And if he gets eight-ten overs, he can score a 50 or a bit more than that.”The India vs Pakistan game will be played in Dubai, where Pakistan beat India by ten wickets at the T20 World Cup last year – it was Pakistan’s first win over India in any World Cup, ODI or T20I.

Sophia Dunkley turns on the power after Katherine Brunt four-for in crushing England win

Opener excels in first outing of team’s aggressive new approach to seal win with 30 balls left

Valkerie Baynes21-Jul-2022Career-best figures from Katherine Brunt and an exceptional first outing for Sophia Dunkley as opener propelled England to a resounding six-wicket win over South Africa with five overs to spare in the first T20I, and a multi-series triumph. The result at Chelmsford, led by Brunt’s 4 for 15 and sealed by Dunkley’s 31-ball half-century handed England a 10-2 lead with two more T20Is remaining, each worth two points for the win.Laura Wolvaardt scored a brave 55 off 49 balls for South Africa in one of the only things to go right for the visitors, who also lost star allrounder Marizanne Kapp for family reasons and bowler Tumi Sekhukhune to injury shortly before the match. Ayabonga Khaka’s 3 for 13 from four overs was another bright spot, but the damage had been done by Brunt and Dunkley.Brunt’s back, babyNot that she ever really went away… just for Test matches. Having announced her retirement from the longest format ahead of last month’s draw in Taunton, Brunt roared back with a vital 3 for 18 as England won the first ODI by five wickets. She sat out the next two but then, stepping up her preparations in earnest for the Commonwealth Games, the 37-year-old Brunt went out and took a career-best 4 for 15 to decimate South Africa and show just how up she is for the debut of women’s cricket at the event, starting in Birmingham next week.Brunt struck with the fourth ball of the match to remove Lara Goodall with a length ball that came back off the seam to clatter into the top of off stump, having had a caught-behind decision overturned on the previous delivery. She then had Sune Luus out edging onto her stumps for her 100th T20I wicket. When she returned in the 18th over, Brunt accounted for Delmi Tucker who sent a simple catch to Dunkley at point, then Wolvaardt to an excellent diving take at deep midwicket by Nat Sciver, who ran out Masabata Klaas four balls later after she had flicked a Brunt delivery to the on-side but was short of her ground coming back for a second, as Sciver threw the ball in to keeper Amy Jones.Katherine Brunt celebrates the wicket of Sune Luus•Getty ImagesLegspinner Sarah Glenn returned to an England shirt for the first time since the T20I segment of the Ashes in January and took her first international wicket since the home series against New Zealand last September when she bowled Anneke Bosch, South Africa’s next-highest scorer behind Wolvaardt with 18. Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone chimed in with two wickets and Sciver one.Slam DunkA week ago, Dunkley spoke of her desire to cement a place in England’s top order, having just been promoted to No. 3 for their 3-0 sweep of the ODIs. Opening for the first time in a T20I, she produced the most positive of results for her side’s experiment with her aggressive style up top, smacking a 39-ball 59 to overhaul slightly more than half of England’s meagre target.Dunkley closed out the powerplay at 50 for 2 after the early loss of Danni Wyatt and Bryony Smith – playing her fourth T20I but first in more than four years – with a brutal six over long-off from the bowling of Klaas, having heaved the same bowler a long way over deep midwicket in the second over. Another off Bosch over long-on completed her haul of sixes in an eye-catching innings that also included five fours. Dunkley eventually holed out to Khaka at deep midwicket off Bosch after an encouraging night’s work for the hosts.South Africa lose two more – players that isSince the drawn Test, very little has gone right for South Africa. Losing the subsequent three ODIs as well as three players, it cannot have been a happy camp heading into the first T20I. The abrupt retirement of explosive batter Lizelle Lee immediately after the Test amid considerable controversy, has now been followed by the departures of star allarounder Kapp and bowler Sekhukhune for family and injury reasons respectively.Related

Both had played key roles in allowing South Africa to draw the rain-hit Test for their only points of the tour so far and as her team’s leading player in terms of form and experience, Kapp’s absence is another heavy blow, especially if, as expected, it extends to the Commonwealth Games. “Kapp has requested to travel back home to Gqeberha to be close to her family during this trying time,” CSA said in a statement.Sekhukhune experienced a groin problem while warming up for last Monday’s third ODI in Leicester and, after consultation with team medical staff, it was agreed she would begin her rehabilitation at home. As well as Diaz: Slot must drop Liverpool ace who’s becoming a big problem

Festivity fever has gripped the nation, but with Boxing Day comes football, and those of a Liverpool persuasion are going to be waking up with just one thing in mind: Leicester City.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side meet Liverpool at Anfield this evening as they look to stir an upset through the remnants of the manager bounce that has faded after a promising start, for Newcastle and Wolves have heavily beaten the Foxes across the past two weeks.

Four points clear at the top (with a game in hand), Liverpool will double down on their conviction ahead of the match, head-and-shoulders above their Premier League rivals as the team to beat as we approach the new year.

But Nottingham Forest’s Merseyside win back in September serves as a cautionary tale to enter contests with the genuine fear of defeat, lest complacency stifle the synergy and style that Arne Slot has finely crafted over several months.

Boxing Day routinely fosters thrilling, high-scoring fixtures, and while the Reds will be desperate to keep a clean sheet after shipping eight from their past three top-flight matches, it’s felt that the hosts will have too much for 17th-place Leicester.

Liverpool team news

Slot expressed caution in his pre-match press conference, with the frenetic festive period more than capable of turning over an upset or two.

On the injury front, defensive duo Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley are still sidelined after respective setbacks picked up at the start of the month.

Things look rather promising, that aside, and Liverpool might see some rotation after the high-octane victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with Curtis Jones sure to be eyeing a midfield starting berth.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates

Diogo Jota’s fitness has steadily increased over the past few weeks and he might be keen on displacing Luis Diaz at centre-forward, though Darwin Nunez is sure to be eyeing up the place himself having been dropped down at N17.

Diaz starred against Tottenham, bagging a brace and offering a silky and unusual take on the number nine role, but he’s not as clinical and consistent as someone like Jota, who could be the difference-maker against a City backline that could crumble against such an elite marksman.

While Slot doesn’t really ring the changes, he might be keen to send Andy Robertson back to the bench too, replacing him with Kostas Tsimikas.

Why Slot should drop Andy Robertson

Robertson is one of Liverpool’s longest-serving members, joining from Hull City in an astute £10m deal back in 2017. His signing and debut season were overshadowed by Mohamed Salah’s record-breaking brilliance, but 319 appearances and a host of major honours later, he’s a legend of the modern era.

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool.

The 30-year-old has weathered a few storms over the past several seasons, however, and may not be quite the same electric machine of old, with errors and athletic lapses slipping into his season.

Make no mistake, Robertson is cultured and experienced with one of the finest ball-playing abilities of any full-back in the business, ranking among the top 1% of such players for passes attempted, the top 3% for progressive passes and the top 2% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

But he’s declined. There’s no question that he’s a lesser version of his former self, even acknowledging in November that some detractors had “written me off” due to his dip in form and security.

He’s conceded recent penalties against Real Madrid and Southampton while being shown the violent glare of the red card during a 2-2 draw against Fulham this month, leaving reporter Lewis Bower criticising the “terrible” mistake in an afternoon that was “a bit of a mare” for the Scotland skipper.

But it’s not just these instances; they are not flashes in a grimy pan. Tsimikas has been second-choice throughout his Liverpool career, joining from Olympiakos in 2020. Now, though, he’s earning minutes on the big stage over a fully fit Robertson, producing results that reinforce Slot’s decision.

This detailed statistical collation makes an interesting comment on Robertson’s athletic regression, with his Greek peer outstripping him across a number of defensive and sporting metrics, albeit from a shallower data pool.

Robertson is one of Liverpool’s highest earners at £160k-per-week, but the paper covering the cracks is starting to wear thin. Tsimikas, 28, is far more authoritative in ball-winning situations while maintaining a crispness with his passing that suits Slot’s set-up just fine.

Change may be afoot at Anfield during the Christmas hangover, with Robertson and perhaps Diaz among those that Slot could place on the bench. Remember, this is a congested period and Liverpool meet West Ham United at the London Stadium in just three days.

For now, let’s just take it game by game. Four or five months from now, plot threads will weave together in a grand slam denouement that may or may not see Liverpool lift the biggest prizes Europe has to offer.

Andy Robertson and Arne Slot

Beating Leicester would only strengthen Slot’s accord though, for it would serve as another subtle but sinister reminder to ostensible title rivals that Liverpool have the quality, depth and dynamism to triumph.

Rotation is key, especially with a trip to West Ham just a few days away. Robertson needs to be dropped, with Tsimikas more than capable of serving well in his stead.
