Club now "thinking about" stealing £1.2m hero away from Rangers in January

A European club are believed to be interested in completing the signing of a Rangers hero in the January transfer window, in a concerning new update.

Latest Rangers news

The Gers are back in Scottish Premiership action on Thursday night, with the trip to Dundee acting as a must-win game for Philippe Clement. All of his side’s hard work in beating Celtic 3-0 was undone by drawing 3-3 draw away to Hibernian last time around, meaning they are now 13 points behind their rivals in the table.

There are plenty of transfer rumours doing the rounds this month, with Rangers fans no doubt keen on seeing reinforcements brought in, and Iqraam Rayners has been linked with a move to Ibrox. The 29-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns striker is considered strong competition for Hamza Igamane.

Marseille defender Bamo Meite is another rumoured option for the Gers, with a loan move to the Scottish giants mooted in the coming weeks. His current club are willing to allow him to move on this month.

Romanian ace Darius Olaru is another of the names backed to move to Rangers in the near future, with the FCSB midfielder a player who could add quality in the middle of the park, scoring twice in four Europa League appearances this season. Now, a concerning exit report has dropped, though.

Rangers ace wanted by European club

According to Tuttosport [via Sport Witness], Genoa are keen on signing Ianis Hagi in the current transfer window, believing they can snap him up for £1.2m. He is said to be back on the Serie A club’s radar, having shown previous interest in him, and they are “thinking about” returning for him this month.

Losing Hagi midway through the season would be a crushing blow for Rangers, especially as he has become such a key player again recently, not least scoring in the aforementioned victory over Celtic, opening the scoring at Ibrox.

The 26-year-old has registered four assists in the Scottish Premiership this season, coming in just four starts, and Ilie Dumitrescu lauded his quality and the impact his performance against Celtic had on his father, saying: “Ianis Hagi had a sensational match.

“He hit a very good shot that managed to surprise a goalkeeper as excellent as Kasper Schmeichel. But he was superb for the whole game. I saw the look of Gheorghe after the goal and he remained impassive. That’s because he would have been expecting Ianis to score. He never gets overexcited!”

Hopefully, Hagi doesn’t like the idea of moving away from Rangers in January, believing he wants to stay put until at least the end of the season, but Genoa’s interest acts as a worry.

Time will tell if that will be the case, but to see the Gers lose an influential player midway through the campaign would have a detrimental impact on his side’s slim title chances.

Nick Gubbins scored twin centuries in an LV= Insurance County Championship match for the first time in his career as Hampshire set Lancashire 351 to win at the Ageas Bowl.Left-handed batter Gubbins followed his innings-rescuing 101 not out with an effortless 130 to give Hampshire a hefty lead on a pitch which had previously benefited the bowlers. He joined forces with Ben Brown, who scored a high-quality 72, to put on 144 for the fifth wicket to grind down Lancashire.Hampshire were eventually bowled out for 344, with the visitors reaching nine in six wicketless overs by close.Gubbins broke through in Middlesex’s championship-winning season in 2016, where he clattered 1,409 Division One runs, including four centuries (a double against Lancashire among them). At that point, a Test career seemed a formality.Related

However, those expectations played on his mind, his average nose-dived to 25 the following season and talk of international call-ups dried up. A change of scenery to Hampshire last summer has seen a fresh blossoming with 769 runs in 2021 followed by a profitable spell in Zimbabwe over the winter. He already has 364 runs in the 2022 Championship. That kind of form tends to turn heads, especially with a new Test captain and managing director looking at ways to stamp a freshness to the squad. Scoring a pair of centuries against England’s premium fast bowler won’t do any harm of upgrading from 27 England Lions appearances, either. He spoke in 2019 about how he had matured and grown after the purple-patch pressures: “I like to think I’ve become better at dealing with things in life generally, be it talk of England or the boiler going in the house.” Those life lessons were put into action on the first morning when he was in the middle of Hampshire collapsing to 40 for 5. Then, his unbeaten 101 kept Hampshire in the game.Today, his century was more about putting his side in a position to win. This was a better day for batting. The skies were blue and the ball was already 36 overs old. The caveat being James Anderson and his relentless control. His first six-over spell of the day saw four maidens and Liam Dawson’s wicket. He eventually recorded 3 for 36.Gubbins was largely anonymous in his slow run-building, although he burst into life with two eye-catching cover drives. The first punishing a rare piece of width offered by Anderson, the latter taking him to a 120-ball fifty.Gubbins and Brown are two recent signings under-pinning Hampshire’s chase for a first title since 1974; hungry having been unwanted by previous counties but with the records of the finest county players. They grew the lead in a risk-free fashion, making the most of an unresponsive ageing ball, totting up 144 runs together in the lazy spring afternoon sun.Gubbins’ big moment came when he pushed Hasan Ali through the covers and for a second the emotion appeared to swell as he gently punched the air with his head bowed, tapped his bat on the floor three times before turning around and almost collapsing into a hug with Brown. Only then did he take off his helmet and raise his bat to the dressing room for the 13th ton of his first-class career.Brown reached 72 before the second new ball pinned him plumb in front, with Felix Organ following him back shortly after when not offering a shot to George Balderson. The lead passed 300 before Gubbins was finally dismissed after 231 runs and 515 deliveries in the match when Danny Lamb trapped him on the crease. Keith Barker chipped in with 40 before scything to cover, James Fuller was bowled and Muhammad Abbas holed out to long-on to complete the innings.

Newcastle now want to agree January exit for "first class" £120k-p/w ace

Newcastle United are now ready to cash in on one of their key men in January as they look to rejuvenate their squad under Eddie Howe, it has been claimed.

Newcastle set for busy January

Following a frustrating summer transfer window, Newcastle United will have money to spend in the January transfer window, and will be looking to do so in a bid to fire themselves back up the Premier League. Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Newcastle United, manager Eddie Howe suggested that his squad feels “stale” and could do with a refresh, something that they couldn’t manage to do in the last transfer window.

“I think freshness is important in a squad – I won’t sit here and deny that,” he said. “There needs to be a certain element of trading in and out to keep the group dynamic new.

“A new dynamic and a new team always has to form every season. Sometimes, the same squad can produce a staleness and a negative product. So I think we’re aware of that. But it’s about what we’re able to do rather than ‘I want’. ‘I want’ is clear. We haven’t had a huge turnover of players and that’s a slight concern.”

Newcastle also have one of the oldest squads in the Premier League, with Eddie Howe’s side the third most experienced in the division and the likes of Fabian Schar, Nick Pope and Dan Burn all well into their 30s.

There will have to be an overhaul on Tyneside in the transfer windows ahead as a result, and now they have made a decision on one of their stars.

Newcastle ready to cash in on defender

That comes as Football Insider report that Newcastle United are once again ready to cash in on fullback Kieran Trippier in January in a bid to lighten their wage bill. The 34-year-old has hardly featured this season thanks to injury, while Tino Livramento appears to have moved ahead of him in the pecking order in the process, though Howe offered no suggestion that Trippier was out in the cold.

“He’s improving physically. He hasn’t played consistently now for quite a long time, so getting him back in that rhythm where he can feel 100 per cent fit will take a little bit of time. But he’s certainly closer than he was, and touch wood, he’s solved the hamstring problem that he had,” the Newcastle boss explained in his pre-match press conference before the clash with Liverpool.

Kieran Trippier

Historically, Howe has been full of praise for his former captain, saying over the summer: “Tripps is a really valuable member of the squad. His professionalism has been first-class. Since coming here he’s played a huge role in changing the narrative around the team. He galvanised the squad from the first day.”

However, with his contract up in 2026 and Trippier among the highest earners at the club, it is reported that the Magpies “will look to cash in” on the 34-year-old in the winter window “in a last-ditch attempt to raise funds”.

It is added that “the club are planning to reinvest the money raised from his sale into the squad”, with the defender having been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia over the summer, and more recently with AC Milan, though a move to San Siro seems unlikely given they are already well-stocked at right back.

With Livramento now first choice, Trippier’s exit may well be the best solution for all parties, and could allow the Magpies to bolster their first team in January with a centre-back and right winger still among their top targets.

Nico Schlotterbeck warned against Bayern Munich move as Germany legend suspects defender is waiting on Premier League offers amid Borussia Dortmund contract standoff

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has advised Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck to reject a potential move to Bayern Munich if Dayot Upamecano remains at the club. The pundit believes the centre-back would struggle for game time in Bavaria and suspects that Schlotterbeck is currently stalling on a new contract because he is holding out for a lucrative transfer to the Premier League.

Schlotterbeck considering his options

Former Bayern Munich and Germany captain Matthaus has urged Schlotterbeck to think twice before swapping Borussia Dortmund for the Allianz Arena, warning the defender that he risks stalling his career if he moves to Bavaria while Upamecano is still present. The future of the 26-year-old centre-back has become a dominant topic in the Bundesliga with his contract at Dortmund expiring in the summer of 2027 and Bayern Munich monitoring his situation closely.

Schlotterbeck, who has established himself as a cornerstone of the Dortmund defence since his arrival from Freiburg, is currently at a career crossroads. With his contract winding down and no extension yet signed, despite Dortmund's clear desire to tie him to a new deal, speculation has mounted that the German champions could look to poach another key asset from their fierce rivals. However, Matthaus believes such a move would be fraught with risk for the player, particularly given the current hierarchy in Vincent Kompany’s squad.

AdvertisementAFPThe Upamecano obstacle

Speaking to Sport Bild, Matthaus analysed the potential transfer and identified French international Dayot Upamecano as the primary barrier to Schlotterbeck’s success in Munich. Despite Schlotterbeck’s evident quality, the World Cup winner feels the tactical setup at Bayern does not currently have a vacancy for him.

"He is one of the best central defenders we have in Germany," Matthaus stated, acknowledging Schlotterbeck's rise to prominence. However, he quickly qualified that praise with a stark warning about the competition for places.

"I think it depends a lot on Upamecano," Matthaus continued. "If Upamecano stays, then it will be very difficult for Nico Schlotterbeck to become a regular player at Bayern. But we are not there yet. I don't know what Nico is planning."

The comments highlight the resurgence of Upamecano, who has seemingly solidified his place in the Bayern starting XI. Matthaus argues that unless the Frenchman departs, Schlotterbeck would likely find himself warming the bench – a scenario that would be detrimental to his ambitions with the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Eyes on England?

Matthaus also offered a theory regarding the delay in Schlotterbeck’s contract renewal at Signal Iduna Park. While Dortmund are keen to tie their defensive leader down to a long-term deal, the player’s camp has remained non-committal. The German legend suspects that this hesitation is not about leverage for a better salary in the Bundesliga, but rather a desire to test himself in England where Liverpool are said to be eyeing him.

"In Dortmund he has his position," Matthaus observed. "I don't know what he is waiting for: probably still for offers from England."

The Premier League has long been touted as a potential destination for Schlotterbeck, whose physical profile, left-footed distribution, and ability to drive into midfield make him an attractive proposition for top English clubs. A La Liga adventure has also been touted as a possibility for the Germany international, with Real Madrid said to be interested. Barcelona had also been linked due to his connection with coach Hansi Flick but recent reports claim the club are reluctant to move for him over concerns about his playing style.

Ultimately, Matthaus’s advice was clear: stay where you are a guaranteed starter, or move abroad, but do not go to Munich to be a backup. He reiterated that as long as the current defensive partnerships at Bayern are functioning, Schlotterbeck would be taking a significant gamble by moving south.

"But if Bayern get along with Upamecano, then I wouldn't necessarily advise Nico to go to Bayern Munich, because then he will be at the back of the queue for the time being," Matthaus concluded.

The intervention from such a high-profile figure adds pressure on Schlotterbeck to clarify his future. For Dortmund, the priority remains securing the signature of their defensive talisman to avoid losing him on a free transfer or for a reduced fee. Bayern, meanwhile, are confident of convincing Upamecano to sign a new contract as the threat of a free transfer looms, suggesting Schlotterbeck may have to give some real thought to Matthaus' comments.

Richardson, Finch and Maxwell take Australia to 3-0

Theekshana’s three wickets gave Sri Lanka hope, but the target was always within the hosts’ reach

Tristan Lavalette15-Feb-2022Australia’s enviable bowling depth was underlined in their comfortable six-wicket victory over beleaguered Sri Lanka in match three, as they clinched the T20I series in Canberra. In a polished performance reminiscent of their T20 World Cup triumph, Australia’s new-look attack without mainstays Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa restricted Sri Lanka to a lowly 121 for 6 with quick Kane Richardson picking up three wickets.Australia’s batting wasn’t nearly as ruthless, but they were never in danger and overhauled the paltry target in the 17th over.Sri Lanka’s bid to stay alive in the series received a massive blow when star allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out after earlier in the day testing positive to Covid-19.Australia showcase vaunted bowling depthWith Cummins and Zampa resting, Australia’s fringe bowlers grabbed their opportunities. After being smashed for 44 runs off four overs in match two, Richardson bounced back with two wickets in the third over.Richardson starred in the recent BBL season but was somewhat overshadowed having to prop up wooden spooners Melbourne Renegades. After struggling on Sunday, Richardson showed off his tricks and returned in the 17th over with a clever full-length slower ball to knock over Dinesh Chandimal. He wasn’t alone in making a statement. Much like he does for BBL champion Perth Scorchers, Ashton Agar’s left-arm spin was miserly in the middle overs and he finished with 1 for 14 off four overs. In trademark fashion, the lanky Agar found grip and bounce in his first match for Australia since his sole game at last year’s T20 World Cup against England. While allrounder Daniel Sams didn’t take a wicket, the left-armer bowled accurately and he stole the show with a spectacular diving outfield catch along the ropes. It puts the pressure on quick Mitchell Starc, whose struggles in the T20 format continued with a wicketless effort punctuated by a wild delivery that landed near second slip and flew to the boundary.Sri Lanka’s batting woes continueApart from a stunning late onslaught in match two, Sri Lanka’s batting has barely fired a shot in this series. In a must-win match, Sri Lanka sought an aggressive approach as they blasted 17 runs off the opening two overs in an eye-catching start. But it was fool’s gold with Danushka Gunathilaka’s dismissal attempting a scoop shot triggering a slew of tame dismissals. Having served a seven-day isolation following a positive Covid-19 result, Kusal Mendis’ sluggishness was understandable as he spooned a return catch to Agar.In a major hole at 40 for 4, Sri Lanka were forced to rebuild through Chandimal and Dasun Shanaka. They started slowly before a flurry of late boundaries lifted Sri Lanka, but it wasn’t nearly enough.Once again, they rued a mishmash of a batting effort, which was either manic or stagnant. Tied down mid-innings, Sri Lanka were anchored to the crease and they finished with 56 dot balls which proved costly.Finch and Maxwell steer Australia to victoryWith Steven Smith out with concussion, Australia had a chance to revamp their batting and they pulled a surprise with Agar elevated to open as a pinch-hitter. It didn’t do the trick with Agar, who normally bats at No.7 or 8, falling for 13 to Maheesh Theekshana, who had revived Sri Lanka’s sagging hopes by removing Ben McDermott on the first ball of the innings.Australia’s hopes of an easy chase eroded on a tricky Manuka Oval pitch against a pumped-up Sri Lanka attack, which was further depleted when left-arm quick Numan Thushara limped off with an apparent side strain injury in the fourth over. With skipper Aaron Finch playing cautiously, having posted just one half-century in his prior 14 T20Is, Glenn Maxwell released the pressure with typical flair marked by an outrageous switch-hit six off spinner Jeffrey Vandersay. Maxwell holed out to Theekshana in the 11th over but Sri Lanka’s sloppy fielding made sure there would be no late twist.Finch didn’t quite rediscover his belligerent best but played determinedly in a bid to emerge from his drought. To his chagrin, he couldn’t seal the deal as he fell for 35 but Australia soon wrapped up the series in straight sets.

Rangers could replace Clement by hiring four-time title-winning manager

Glasgow Rangers made it through to the League Cup final for the third season in a row, although the Ibrox side didn’t do it the easy way.

The Light Blues went into the interval trailing by an Andy Halliday goal to Motherwell, and it was clear Philippe Clement had to make changes.

The likes of Mohamed Diomande and Danilo made all the difference during the second half as the club turned the tie around, with Nedim Bajrami netting with ten minutes to go, which sealed a 2-1 win.

Although the victory offers some respite from the poor results over the previous few weeks, Clement is still a man under pressure.

Why Philippe Clement’s job isn’t safe

This season has been disappointing so far. Not only did the Gers fail to qualify for the Champions League group stages, but they also trail both Celtic and Aberdeen in the Premiership title race by nine points after just ten matches.

Combine these results with the dismal performances on the field, and it is clear that resentment has set in among large sections of the Ibrox support.

The 2-1 defeat to Aberdeen last week appeared to be the straw that broke the camel’s back, with the team looking both lethargic and short of ideas against a well-coached Dons side.

Unless something drastic happens between now and Christmas, Clement will surely be shown his marching orders. The question is, who can the Light Blues turn to as a potential replacement?

An ideal replacement for Clement

The rumour mill is already circling surrounding Clement’s future, with a few replacements being touted.

One name to have been touted with the Ibrox hotseat is Malmo coach Henrik Rydstrom, who coincidentally has faced the Gers this season in the Europa League.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

The Swedish side may have looked poor during the 2-0 loss to Rangers, but praise has been high for the manager, with Sky Sports journalist Adam Bate waxing lyrical about the 48-year-old:

Rydstrom has led Malmo to another league title this season, which means the club have now won four of the previous five Swedish titles. How has he done that? Well, his enterprising 4-2-3-1 formation that’s seen him boast a 2.08 points-per-game record in the Allsvenskan has gone down a treat.

The Swede’s penchant for attacking play could certainly appeal to the Ibrox faithful, who are growing sick and tired of Clement’s team and their laborious nature.

As per Breaking the Lines, one of the most innovative aspects of Rydstrom’s Malmo side are the Brazilian concepts integrated into the team’s playing style with one-twos and short passing triangles/diamonds used to move the ball around quickly and with purpose.

Rydstrom looks to be at the peak of his powers. Might he fancy a new challenge away from Sweden in the near future? Aberdeen have enjoyed plenty of success this season under Jimmy Thelin, who recently managed Elfsborg so there is a pre-made recipe for success there.

Could the 48-year-old have a similar sort of impact if he moved across the North Sea and took charge of the Light Blues?

The next few weeks will be the most important in Clement’s managerial career. Another couple of defeats, and he will be on his way out the door, that’s for sure.

'Can't create overnight what Hardik brings at No. 6' – Virat Kohli

India captain also believes pitches for T20 World Cup will be better for batting than they were in IPL

Deivarayan Muthu23-Oct-20214:19

Virat Kohli: ‘Team will cover all bases’

Hardik Pandya, who didn’t bowl a single ball in IPL 2021 across both legs in India and the UAE, is still not fit enough to bowl. Virat Kohli, however, has said that India value his big-hitting so much that he will start the T20 World Cup as a specialist batter. Pandya has had to deal with a long-standing back issue, which has severely limited his bowling since he underwent surgery in 2019.”Honestly, I feel that Hardik presently with his physical condition is getting better in terms of being prepared to bowl at least two overs for us at a certain stage in this tournament,” Kohli said on the eve of India’s T20 World Cup opener against Pakistan in Dubai. “We strongly feel that we can make the most of the opportunity at hand till the time he starts bowling, we’ve considered a couple of other options to chip in for an over or two. So, we’re not bothered about that at all. What he brings at that No.6 spot is something you cannot create overnight.”Related

Kohli: Mental health management will become 'a norm of the future'

Hardik Pandya: 'When I am on the ground, I believe nothing's impossible. I don't feel fear'

Although Pandya’s recent batting form isn’t too encouraging – he managed only 127 runs in 11 innings in IPL 2021 – Kohli pointed out that his middle-order power-hitting had played a vital role in India winning the T20I series 2-1 in Australia last year. Pandya’s finishing salvo – 42 off 22 balls – had helped India hunt down 195 and wrap up the series in Sydney.”I was always in favour of backing him in Australia as a batter purely, and we saw what he did in the T20 series and how he can take the game away from the opposition when he is in full flow,” Kohli said. “So these things from a talking or discussion point of view seem very interesting that if he doesn’t bowl, will he be left out. But we understand the value he brings to the team as a No.6 batter, and in world cricket, if you look around, there are specialists who do that job. It’s very important to have that guy, especially in T20 cricket, who can play an impact innings at that stage. Even when the chips are down, he’s someone who can play a long innings in that way. So for us, that is way more valuable than forcing him to do something he’s not ready for at the moment.”The pitches in the UAE for the recent IPL were largely slow and low, curbing stroke-making. While Kohli was still wary of the relaid Sharjah tracks, he reckoned that the ones in Dubai and Abu Dhabi would play better at the T20 World Cup.”Looking at the IPL finals, I believe the quality of pitches is definitely going to be far better in this T20 World Cup,” he said. “Also it being an ICC tournament, we know that the standard of pitches has to be maintained to a certain degree, which is consistent across all venues. I understand that to protect the pitches for a tournament like the World Cup, there had to be some kind of compromise in terms of the playing conditions when we played the IPL. So, we all understood that the wicket in the IPL finals was very, very good.”I think the dew factor is becoming prominent as we head into this time of the year in Dubai and that is also going to help the pitches play much better. I presume Abu Dhabi and Dubai are probably going to be the best pitches out of all the venues. Sharjah, more or less, will stay true to its true nature, which is slow and low. I don’t see many high-scoring [matches] unless dew becomes such a massive factor there as well.”

Move over Kiwior & Saliba: 5/10 star also cost Arsenal vs Bournemouth

Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the 2024/25 Premier League season came crashing to a halt against Bournemouth on Saturday evening.

The Gunners suffered a calamitous 2-0 defeat to the Cherries on the South Coast, to leave them reeling on 17 points, with Manchester City and top-of-the-table Liverpool having the chance to extend their leads on Sunday.

It was a game that many thought should have been a routine win for Mikel Arteta’s side, against a side managed by his childhood friend Andoni Iraola. However, a first-half red card for William Saliba meant the Gunners had an uphill battle to get anything from their trip to the Vitality Stadium.

Ryan Christie opened the scoring for the Cherries in the second period, getting on the end of a well-worked set-piece routine. Their lead was doubled after Justin Kluivert converted from the penalty spot, a kick won by Evanilson after he was fouled by David Raya.

It was a very disappointing day’s work for Arteta and his side, who missed the chance to go top of the Premier League table and apply pressure to their title rivals. There were certainly some poor performances throughout from the Gunners.

Arsenal’s poor performers vs. Bournemouth

Two of the players who had a particularly poor outing in an Arsenal shirt on Saturday night were Saliba and Jakub Kiwior. French centre-back Saliba cost his side dearly, hauling down Evanilson inside the Gunners half.

The Brazilian was chasing a loose backpass from Leandro Trossard and was dragged down by the Arsenal number two, who was the last man and therefore deemed to be denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

His short half-hour performance against the Cherries earned him a 4/10 rating by Football London journalist Kaya Kaynak. He claimed Saliba ‘seemed to panic’ when the former Porto striker ran in behind him.

Kiwior came on to replace Raheem Sterling, who was sacrificed following the Frenchman’s red card. He never really looked settled in the game, as his Sofascore stats suggest. The Poland international completed just 76% of his passes, winning two from five duels and failing to win his only tackle.

He also put Raya in a difficult position with the backpass, leading to the Spaniard committing the foul which led to Bournemouth’s penalty, and was replaced in the 81st minute even though he came on as a substitute himself. He received a 5/10 rating from Kaynak at full-time.

One Arsenal player whose job was made tough by Saliba’s red card was Ben White, and he also struggled to make a positive impact on the game.

White’s stats vs. Bournemouth

As is often the case when a red card goes against your team, the Gunners defenders struggled from the 30-minute mark onwards. England international White was one of those who were outnumbered but had an even harder job given he did not have the highly rated Saliba next to him, nor even a right-footed player.

That also had implications on the Gunners’ number four getting forward. Normally one to venture down the right wing and get crosses into the box, the 27-year-old had to be far more conservative and hold his position.

The post-match stats for the former Brighton and Hove Albion man did not make for pretty reading. Whilst White looked after the ball well, completing 91% of his passes, he won just two from five tackles and four from nine duels in total.

Kaynak gave the Arsenal number four a 5/10 rating for his performance on the South Coast. He noted that there was not much White could have done going forward, although did point out he was ‘beaten on a couple of occasions’ by winger Dango Ouattara.

Arteta will be desperate for White and his teammates to bounce back in mid week, as they face Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates Stadium.

PCA push for reduction in 'outdated' compensation payments for counties' IPL players

England players without central contracts have to reimburse their counties for missing games

The Professional Cricketers Association (PCA) are pushing for a change in the “outdated” system which sees English players without central contracts pay a significant proportion of their annual salary back to their counties when they miss games due to involvement in the IPL.Players without central contracts are required to pay 1% of their annual salary back to their counties for the first 21 days that they miss due to IPL involvement and a further 0.7% for subsequent days. With most of those affected earning top-end county salaries, the system has led to payments of more than £50,000 from those playing the full IPL season to their counties.”There was a formula put in place back in 2010 of deductions from county salaries for those taking part in the IPL,” Daryl Mitchell, the PCA’s director of cricket operations and the chair of its newly formed advocacy group, told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve had requests from members about it and we feel as though it needs updating, and that there need to be conversations around what that formula looks like.”I think everyone would agree that the cricketing world has changed substantially since 2010 and clearly England’s stance with regards to player playing in the IPL has changed. In 2010, it was almost a preventative measure to try and discourage as many players as possible from going to the IPL; now, the ECB are encouraging English players to go and experience that tournament because of the benefits gained from playing in it.”Four players without central contracts – Sam Billings (Kent/Delhi Capitals), Chris Jordan (Sussex/Punjab Kings), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire/Rajasthan Royals) and Dawid Malan (Yorkshire/Punjab Kings) – were affected earlier this year before the IPL’s mid-season postponement, while Tom Banton and Harry Gurney have been in a similar position in recent seasons. Jordan and Malan are on incremental deals with the ECB, who top up their county salaries, but neither holds a full white-ball contract.Related

County cut-off for IPL replacements denied Topley CSK chance

Players are understood to be in discussions with counties around their availability for the second half of the IPL, which restarts on September 19 in Dubai, and a handful of English players have been discussed as replacements for the overseas signings that have withdrawn. George Garton, for example, is expected to be confirmed as Royal Challengers Bangalore’s replacement for Daniel Sams in the coming days. With players also required to reimburse their counties on a pro rata basis for their involvement in the Hundred – a process which is managed centrally – those involved in the IPL as well can end up paying significantly more than half of their annual salary back to their counties.”It’s a significant chunk and in our view, it’s too high,” Mitchell said. “We absolutely believe that the counties need compensating and we’re not getting away from the fact that players are spending time away – there does need to be some compensation when counties are missing their players for that window. We’re just saying that it needs to be reviewed and looked at – it’s outdated and needs changing.Daryl Mitchell is chairing the PCA’s new advocacy group•Getty Images for PCA

“The risk is that if we don’t have these conversations, and there’s not a formula endorsed by both the counties and the PCA, then it becomes a little bit like the wild west and you have players trying to negotiate this stuff out of contract, or signing white-ball contracts and going pay-as-you-play for red-ball cricket because they might be better off that way.”The PCA are also pushing back against the informal cut-off date for players without central contracts to sign as replacements, which saw Reece Topley denied the opportunity to play for Chennai Super Kings this year after Surrey told him they would not give him a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) and let him miss the start of the County Championship season.”That is an unwritten agreement between the counties and it’s certainly a restriction that we wouldn’t support because there’s a risk of souring relationships between clubs and players,” Mitchell said. “I think a draconian end date probably isn’t the right way forward – it should be a sensible conversation between the player and their club.”Any change would be made by the counties rather than the ECB, who facilitate rather than make decisions on IPL-related issues for players without central contracts. The topic was one of several discussed at the first meeting of the PCA’s new advocacy group, which comprises a dozen current and former pros from the men’s and women’s game and is intended to gather views from a wide cross-section of members and, in the long term, become “a leading voice within the game”.
