Phil Simmons: West Indies will be ready and looking to defend our trophy

Head coach says lack of home crowds and preparation time could work against England

Alan Gardner13-Jun-2020Not since their 1980s heyday have West Indies won a Test series in England, but two aspects of the forthcoming three-match encounter could work in their favour, according to head coach Phil Simmons. First, due to the behind-closed-doors nature of the Tests, in response to Covid-19, there will be no supporters in the stands to cheer the home side on; and second, instead of being halfway through their summer, England have not played competitive cricket for several months. That might “even things out a little bit”, Simmons said via video conference from the team’s training base in Manchester, where West Indies are currently serving a 14-day quarantine period and continuing their preparations for the rescheduled tour, after agreeing to ECB proposals for staging “bio-secure” Test matches. As well as the absence of crowds, there will be significant departures from normal playing conditions – including a ban on using saliva to shine the ball, and the possibility of Covid replacements for players who display symptoms of the disease. The first international series to be contested since the coronavirus pandemic escalated in mid-March promises to be a trip into the unknown for all involved.ALSO READ: World must ‘come together’, says Holder, as West Indies arrive for historic tour”I don’t know if it will increase our chances, because both teams are under the same umbrella – for want of a better word,” Simmons said. “The nice part for us is that 20,000 Englishmen raving for England, and that crowd support, it’s not there for them. So that in a way will help us, so it’s good from that point of view.”Asked about the standing start for both teams, he added: “It’s a plus, because England hasn’t come from a tour recently, and we’ve just been playing cricket at home. Because in a normal situation we would have been coming from camps and England would have been halfway through their season and the series would have been going on right now. So I think that is a plus for us, because it evens out things a little bit, with the fact they haven’t been playing competitive cricket for a while also.”Having beaten England 2-1 in the Caribbean 18 months ago, a draw would be enough for West Indies to retain the Wisden Trophy. And while they travelled to the UK earlier this week without three players who took park in that 2018-19 victory – batsmen Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer, and allrounder Keemo Paul – Simmons was happy with the players at his disposal.”I think we have the best squad we can have,” he said. “Unfortunately a few guys decided not to come but we are here with the best squad that we can have here. And from the way we’ve started our work, the guys have been putting in, I think we’ll be ready and looking to defend our trophy.”Even with everything around and having to be conscious of the whole situation and the way the world is now, we still have to be mindful that we are preparing for a Test series against one of the top Test nations in the world. So we still have to put everything in place and do everything correctly.”West Indies fielding coach Rayon Griffith wears PPE while conducting a drill•CWI MediaThe absence of Bravo and Hetmyer will likely increase the focus on the tourists’ batting line-up, in particular Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope, whose runs were integral to victory at Headingley in 2017 – West Indies’ first Test win in England for 17 years.”There’s a lot of pressure on the batsmen to perform because the bowling unit have been carrying the Test team for a while now,” Simmons said. “It’s something that we have been on a lot, not to put extra pressure on but we need to get that total of 400-450 in order to give this bowling unit – which I think is a top-class bowling unit, the fast bowlers especially. So we need to get that 400-50 on a regular basis in order to give ourselves a chance of winning Test matches.”We understand the quality of these two individuals [Bravo and Hetmyer] and we know what we’ll be missing. But in situations like this we have to work hard with the guys who are here and make sure that what we’re doing is putting them in a position to fill those two shoes for the series. Hopefully whoever fills the shoes can go on and be as great as they want to be.”England well know the prowess of West Indies’ pace-bowling resources, having been blown away for 77 in Barbados last year, and Simmons suggested his hand could yet be strengthened by the time the first Test begins on July 8. Although Shannon Gabriel is not officially part of the 14-man Test squad, he is among the back-up personnel on tour and could come into contention for selection if he can prove his recovery from an ankle injury over the coming weeks.”Shannon as we know has come back from injury, and being a senior member of the squad in the past, I think we would definitely have a look at him coming into the [squad] if he’s up to that fitness level leading into the first Test.”

Ratcliffe ready to sell £350,000-a-week Man Utd player who regrets joining

Manchester United are ready to sell a £350,000-a-week player this summer who reportedly regrets joining the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s busy Sunday

Sir Jim Ratcliffe had a frantic Sunday, running the London Marathon before heading over to Wembley to watch Man Utd’s FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City.

When he arrived at Wembley for the second half, the Red Devils were in control of the tie before giving up a 3-0 lead to the Championship side. They almost threw it away in extra time but managed to prevail on penalties, with Ratcliffe saying prior to the game that patience is required among the Old Trafford fanbase.

“We're not there with football yet. One of the biggest problems with football is you get these new guys coming into the team, they're capable people but they're all on gardening leave. It's a big problem in football. The fans are impatient. It's a journey, they have to be patient. It's not a light switch. We will turn it around.”

Ratcliffe’s gardening leave comments appear to point towards Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth, who is wanted as sporting director at Old Trafford. Should Ashworth arrive in time for the summer, he may work closely with new technical director Jason Wilcox, who has joined from Southampton. A number of incomings and outgoings could be on the cards ahead of Ratcliffe’s first full season as co-owner, and by the looks of things, they are ready to sell one player.

Man Utd ready to sell Casemiro

According to Football Insider, Man Utd are ready to sell Casemiro this summer. This comes after a poor performance at Wembley where the Brazilian turned out at centre-back alongside Harry Maguire, missing his penalty in the shootout.

Sources have told FI that ‘United now feel Casemiro is unsuited to their side and are ready to consider offers for his services in the summer’, looking to get his huge £350,000-a-week base salary off the books at Old Trafford.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Casemiro hasn’t exactly had the best of times in Manchester lately, with Jamie Redknapp slamming the 32-year-old midfielder after United's draw against Bournemouth earlier this month.

“I love watching him play. But right now he looks like he’s in Soccer Aid. He looks like he’s playing at such a pace where the game is a bit of fun and there’s celebrities coming on the pitch. No. This is the Premier League, you’ve got so much experience. That isn’t the case of anything else apart from running.”

There have also been reports this season that Casemiro ‘regrets’ his decision to leave Real Madrid for Man Utd back in 2022, so parting ways with the midfielder could be best for all involved this summer. The Red Devils also appear to have replacements lined up for the Brazilian, with Fluminense defensive midfielder Andre a reported concrete target, so the coming months could represent a new era both on and off the pitch.

James Anderson ruled out of SA tour after suffering rib injury

Fast bowler was limited to just two overs on final afternoon of second-Test victory

George Dobell08-Jan-2020James Anderson has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour of South Africa due to a left rib injury.Anderson, the leading wicket-taker among fast bowlers in Test history, sustained the injury on the final day of the Cape Town Test. WithEngland pressing for victory, he continued to bowl despite the pain and despite the knowledge that, by doing so, he risked exacerbatingthe problem. He underwent a scan in Cape Town on Wednesday which confirmed the issue was bone-related rather than a soft-tissue injury. Such setbacks typically take between six to eight weeks to heal.Anderson will return to England in the next few days for rest and rehab, with Craig Overton, the Somerset seamer, staying on with the squad as cover.

The new injury is a cruel setback for Anderson. The Cape Town Test was just his second since returning from a calf injury that limited him toonly four overs in the entire Ashes campaign. The prospect of several more weeks of rehab may well prove disheartening, although he signalled his desire to battle back in an upbeat tweet shortly after the news was confirmed.”Frustrating to be missing the rest of this series with a broken rib but hopefully will be healed in a few weeks!” Anderson wrote. “Will be supporting the boys from home.”Anderson bowled immaculately in Cape Town, even though he was limited to eight overs on the final day after reporting tightness and discomfort at the end of the morning session. He became the oldest England seamer to claim a five-wicket haul in Test cricket sinceFreddie Brown in 1951 in the first innings while his overall match figures were seven for 63 from 37 overs.ALSO READ: Dobell: Seven things we learnt from Cape Town victorySuch figures may convince him that, once recovered, he can still play a role at Test level. He had previously suggested he may like to sitout England’s tour of Sri Lanka in March – he argued the pitches will render him largely redundant in any case – with a view to returning tothe side for the home season. England’s first Test of the home summer, against West Indies, starts on June 4.The news sustains England’s tricky start to the tour. After contending with a virulent sickness bug that affected 11 players ahead or duringthe first Test, England lost their first-choice opening batsman, Rory Burns, to an ankle ligament injury while he was playing football inwarm-up the day before the second Test. At the time Ben Stokes suggested, tongue only partly in cheek, that the tour was “cursed.”Anderson requires 16 more wickets to become the fourth man to claim 600 Test victims.

Josh Philippe's 56-ball 83* powers Sydney Sixers to fifth win of the season

The wicketkeeper-batsman neutralised the threat of Rashid Khan to help the Sixers chase down 177

A stunning display of strokeplay from wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Philippe and an impressive fightback from the Sydney Sixers bowlers, led by the returning Josh Hazlewood, earned them their fifth win of the season. Chasing 177 against the Adelaide Strikers at the sell-out Coffs Harbour ground with nearly 10,000 spectators, the Sixers openers Philippe and Justin Avendano put on 72 in under nine overs to set the platform. Avendano fell for a 33-ball 47 but the Strikers’ total wasn’t steep enough on a batsman-friendly pitch as Philippe saw them through for a seven-wicket win.Avendano fires the engine, Philippe puts out Rashid KhanThe 22-year-old Philippe had been called an “excitement machine” by Mike Hesson, who secured him at base price for Royal Challengers Bangalore at the IPL auction last month, and he showed exactly why. While Avendano took on the quicks early on, Philippe proved his worth when Rashid Khan bowled the last over of the powerplay. Off his first ball against Khan, Philippe swept the spinner fine for four and two balls later, he picked the quicker delivery and hammered it for six to make it a 12-run over.Josh Hazlewood was in fine form on his BBL comeback•Getty Images

Avendano showed his intent early against the fast bowlers. The first balls he faced from Michael Neser, Billy Stanlake, Harry Conway and Peter Siddle all went for boundaries; including a six against Siddle. It showed Avendano, who joined the squad on Saturday and came in for regular captain Moises Henriques (missing out to attend the birth of his first child), wasn’t going to let the experienced names dominate in only his fourth T20. He pulled and drove fearlessly, struck the ball cleanly, and took the pressure off Philippe before a leading edge ended his innings in the ninth over.Philippe, on 25 then, steered the Sixers’ chase as the Strikers kept Rashid’s last three overs for later. He returned in the 12th over with the Sixers still needing 86 from 54 and Philippe used the crease well to sweep again and seemed to pick the wrong’uns from the hand by going deep in his crease to collect runs, using the tactic to bring up his 36-ball fifty in the 15th over. Rashid accounted for Daniel Hughes in that over but Philippe and James Vince didn’t allow the legspinner any more success and the England batsman smoked him for a six in his last over as Rashid ended with 1 for 34. Philippe scored 23 of those runs while facing only 12 balls from Rashid.Despite the Sixers being mostly in control of the chase, things got tense towards the end when they needed 32 from 18, and Siddle only conceded seven in his third over to bring the equation to 25 from 12. But Philippe rose to the occasion again and virtually ended the chase with the first three balls of the 19th over against Neser. Expecting yorkers, he stayed deep in the crease and drilled the first two full deliveries for fours before dispatching a short ball over midwicket for his fourth six. The Sixers only needed four off the last over, and Tom Curran sealed victory with a straight six off Siddle.Jonathan Wells fought well for the Strikers•Getty Images

Hazlewood puts the brakes on in BBL returnHazlewood last played in the BBL in 2014 and his last ODI appearance was in November 2018 but it didn’t show at all. He stuck to his Test lines and lengths, didn’t use any slower deliveries or yorkers, and stifled the Strikers with his accuracy. The Strikers had raced to 1 for 67 in seven overs, cashing in on the diet of short balls they were being served, before Hazlewood came back for his second spell. A scratchy-looking Alex Carey’s problems were compounded when Hazlewood kept angling the ball away from him from off stump; the pressure mounted and Carey made room to heave but he missed a straight delivery and lost his leg stump, for 29 off 31.Hazlewood’s heat fired up the other quicks as they collectively brought down the run rate from 9.57 to 7.23 by the end of the 13th over, Hazlewood finishing with 1 for 18. At 5 for 120 after 15 overs, the Strikers were lifted by Jonathan Wells’ timing and clever placement which earned him a useful unbeaten 40 off 28 along with the lower-middle order. The Strikers collected 56 from the last five as Neser and Rashid also chipped in with cameos.Sixers’ fielding helps Strikers but not muchIf the Strikers didn’t help themselves by not promoting Rashid up the order as they have recently done, they were at least aided by the Sixers’ fielding errors. Ben Dwarshuis put down two consecutive chances, despite getting his hands to both, at deep backward square leg in the last over, Rashid the beneficiary both times. Earlier too, there were several misfields: once in the powerplay, then in the 14th and 15th overs, and Lloyd Pope and Daniel Hughes also put down catches in the circle. One misfield also led to Matthew Short’s run-out for a diamond duck but the Sixers can’t take credit for that.Currently placed second on the table, the Sixers will have to up their fielding game to stay near the top.

Pakistan 'struggling in every department' in T20Is – Misbah-ul-Haq

Over-dependence on Babar Azam a big reason for batting failures against Sri Lanka, says the head coach

Umar Farooq08-Oct-2019

Misbah-ul-Haq has a fair bit to do after back-to-back defeats against Sri Lanka•Getty Images

Misbah-ul-Haq cited deficiencies in practically all departments of the Pakistan T20I outfit following their back-to-back defeats to a second-string Sri Lanka side in Lahore, but defended the decision to bring back Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal.Over the last two years, Pakistan have won 21 of out the 28 T20Is and lost seven, five of which have come in the last nine months. “Losing is never good, especially against a team that is without their major players, and it’s an eye-opener,” Misbah, the team’s head coach and chief selector, said in the post-match press conference. “We can see deficiency in every department: bowling, batting and particularly the way we got out against spin, and also our death bowling.”There was a clear difference between the two teams. Despite being inexperienced, they were disciplined and did everything right, while we completely failed to implement our plan.”ALSO READ: T20I cricket comes to Lahore, but it’s not the same Pakistan as on TVWith Shehzad and Umar coming back, Pakistan experimented with their top order, dropping Fakhar Zaman for the first T20I and opening with Babar Azam and Shehzad, and Umar at No. 3. The three, however, fell within 4.2 overs, leaving Pakistan reeling at 22 for 3 in the 165-run chase, which they eventually lost by 64 runs. Fakhar came back as an opener for the second T20I, pushing Shehzad to No. 3 and Umar to No. 5. Their highest run-scorer of the first T20I, Ifthikar Ahmed, was left out altogether. This experiment failed too, with Pakistan losing their top five for 52 in a chase of 182 before they went on to lose by 35 runs.Since his debut in September 2016, Babar – the No. 1 T20I batsman – has scored 1263 runs in 32 innings at a stellar average of 50.52 and a strike rate of 127.96, and nearly 70% of his 831 runs in the last two years have come in wins. Babar and Fakhar’s opening partnership has also been pivotal for Pakistan’s success, but Babar’s failure at the top in the two T20Is against Sri Lanka has left Pakistan in a fix, exposing the top order’s struggle especially during a chase.”There are a lot of reasons for this experimentation,” Misbah said. “Yes, we are the No. 1 team in the world but mostly our strength has been standing on Babar Azam scoring runs and with him not scoring in two games, we are exposed badly. We need to find out six or more match-winners, we need to have more dependable batsmen, we need powerhouses in the top and middle, and in bowling we need to take wickets upfront and in the death overs and we need to have good finishers.”But we failed overall, we are struggling in every department, and it’s a big eye-opener for us. We didn’t play to our strengths and couldn’t deliver. We are looking for more batsmen rather than just relying on one or two.”The recalls of Shehzad and Umar had come in for criticism from various sections – Shehzad has scored 4 and 13 in the two games, while Umar has been dismissed for golden ducks both times – but Misbah stood by the decision to recall them and stressed on the need to experiment.”Both these players have performed well wherever they’ve played in the last one year. Ahmed’s performance in PSL was remarkable enough for a chance, while Umar, whichever format he played, was among the good ones [batsmen],” Misbah said. “It’s unfortunate [that] in our circuit, there is no other batsman in T20s who had performed better than them. Players who have performed in domestic surely deserve a chance, and that’s why we offered them.”If they weren’t able to perform what can be done? Obviously I am answerable, but to build up a team you need to do some experiments to get the answers. When you play someone in international cricket with a couple of games, you understand the utility of a player. We need to show some patience and wait for the next series to find answers.”

After retirement rethink, Ambati Rayudu promises IPL return for Chennai Super Kings

Decision to retire was not emotional but because he was disappointed at missing out on the World Cup, explains Indian middle-order batsman

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Aug-2019Despite announcing his retirement from “all forms and levels” of the game in early July, Ambati Rayudu has clarified that he would “definitely be playing the IPL for Chennai Super Kings” next season and keep playing white-ball cricket.Rayudu, currently in Chennai playing the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s one-day league for Grand Slam, attempted to clear the air on his status, explaining that his retirement announcement on July 3 was not in reaction to being snubbed by the selectors for the World Cup but because he was disappointed at not making the cut.The 33-year-old batsman was thought of as the frontrunner to fill the No. 4 spot in the ODI batting order, but was left out of the main squad of 15 and named in the list of standby players. But, following injuries to Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar, Rishabh Pant and then Mayank Agarwal, the latter not even among the standbys, travelled to England.ALSO READ: ‘No bias or favouristism in Rayudu’s WC exclusion’ – MSK PrasadSpeaking to on Friday, Rayudu said: “I would definitely be playing the IPL for Chennai Super Kings and make a comeback into white-ball cricket. My priority now is to get back into peak fitness.” Rayudu also said that he wouldn’t be seeking his fortunes in overseas T20 leagues, as had been speculated. On being asked about his statement on bringing the curtain down on a “wonderful journey of playing the sport and learning from every up and down it brought up on for the last 25 years”, Rayudu said that it wasn’t an “emotional decision” but an expression of his disappointment at missing out on the World Cup.”I wouldn’t say it was an emotional decision, because I worked very hard for the World Cup in the last four years,” he said. “You are bound to be disappointed and I felt it was time. The decision that I took was not because of rejection or anything else.”You work towards something and when you don’t get it, you feel it’s time to move on.”Rayudu, who said he would be sending the BCCI “a formal letter soon” to inform it of his change of heart, added that he wasn’t thinking about a spot in any of the India white-ball teams yet – he had announced his retirement from first-class cricket in late 2018.”I haven’t thought that far yet,” he said of a return to the national side. “I need to take it step by step and see how things pan out in the coming months.”

Sunderland now want to sign "incredible" academy gem in late January move

Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing an "incredible" teenage gem in the January transfer window – one who has been compared to a current England star.

Sunderland transfer news

The Black Cats know that they will have to complete any business this month by the end of deadline day on Thursday, so time is running out for Michael Beale to strengthen his squad. Young Leeds United defender Leo Hjelde is the player most heavily linked with a move to the Stadium of Light, with the Whites set to allow him join a fellow Championship club in January.

leo-hjelde-leeds-united-championship

Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles is another individual whose name has emerged as an option for Sunderland midway through the season, but as of now, nothing has come to fruition. It seems that the club are eyeing both permanent and temporary targets before the current window reaches its conclusion, and it looks as though a loan switch for a talented Premier League player is now on the cards.

Sunderland want Charles Sagoe Jr

According to a fresh update from Football Transfers, Sunderland are keen on signing Arsenal youngster Charles Sagoe Jr before the end of the window, with a loan move in the offing after agreeing a permanent deal for Hjelde.

Charles-sagoe-jr

"Arsenal’s Charles Sagoe Jr is in talks with Sunderland over a proposed loan move ahead of the closure of the January transfer window next week, FootballTransfers has been told. The Gunners’ promising winger has caught the attention of several clubs, but we understand that it’s the Black Cats who are pressing ahead for this signature.

"Sunderland have been linked with a move for Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, who enjoyed a great spell for them last season in the Championship, but now sources inform us that they have set their sights on the Gunners' prodigy instead."

Signing any player from one of the top clubs in the country feels exciting, so Sunderland snapping up Sagoe Jr on loan could be such an eye-catching piece of business by them, similar to the excitement around Amad Diallo after his switch from Manchester United.

He has also played once for the first team and has been called "incredible" by Hale End productions, host of Away From Hale End Podcast:

"Charles Sagoe Jr. makes his senior debut for Arsenal! One of the more underrated Hale End prospects. A versatile forward, who excels most as a false 9. Creator, distributor and goal scorer. Incredible technique."

The fact that Sagoe Jr is also being compared to current Arsenal superstar Bukayo Saka in the initial report speaks volumes about the attacking quality and potential that he possesses, so Sunderland having him in their ranks in the second half of the season could aid their Championship promotion push significantly up until May.
