Spurs gifted chance to cash in on Moura

Tottenham Hotspur have been gifted a chance to cash in on Lucas Moura before deadline day on September 1st…

What’s the word?

According to journalist Jorge Nicola on Yahoo Esportes, the north Londoners have received at least three bids from unnamed teams across Europe and Asia for the Brazilian winger.

It’s believed that the Lilywhites would be open to a sale if an offer of €20m (£17m) or more comes in.

If not, he could remain amongst the backup options under manager Antonio Conte for at least another season.

Time to sell?

That would be an awful waste of money, however, so at this point, sporting director Fabio Paratici should consider cashing in if another offer comes forward in the coming weeks.

As per Capology (via FBref), the former Paris Saint-Germain man is thought to be on around £80k-per-week, which is more than Conte’s current starters such as Eric Dier, Ryan Sessegnon and Ben Davies.

And with the arrival of Richarlison in a whopping £60m deal from Everton this summer, on top of having Dejan Kulusevski, keeping Moura around to bench warm doesn’t make much sense at all.

Since that night in Amsterdam, he has been very mediocre at best. Indeed, in 2022, the Brazilian has managed only three assists in the Premier League, failing to score, as per Transfermarkt.

So far this campaign, he has been restricted to just 12 minutes of game time, which is a worrying sign for someone on such a high wage.

Once described as a “nightmare” to train against by Dier, the £25m signing from PSG in 2018 could garner Spurs some nice funds to end their busy summer of business, though, at 30 years of age, their window of opportunity is only getting smaller.

Conte no longer needs Moura and he may well not be good enough for the club anymore, given his recent form, so as such, Paratici and co must cash in on the long-serving star if another offer arrives in the near future.

Rangers: Fashion Sakala rules out move

A big admission has emerged on Glasgow Rangers striker Fashion Sakala and his future at Ibrox in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

The Light Blues attacker has revealed that he does not want to leave the club on a temporary basis amid speculation of an exit for him in the coming weeks.

Glasgow Times quotes him as saying: “Obviously I am very happy to be here. All this talk about loans? I don’t think I can go on loan. I am not looking at loan moves.

“There is no need for me to go on loan because my first season was not bad. I scored 12 goals in all competitions and that was my adaptation season. Now I have to prepare myself to do better this season.

“If I hadn’t got the chance last season or if I had not scored a single goal then I would have said: ‘Okay, I need to make a move, I need to go’. Because for me, I can be here at this big club, but if I am not playing then it does not mean anything.”

Supporters will be delighted

Gers supporters will be delighted by this as losing Sakala this season would be a blow to Gio van Bronckhorst’s attacking options.

As the player has admitted himself, the 2021/22 campaign was a transitional year for him as he adapted to life in Scottish football. Along with adjusting to playing in a new country, he also had to deal with Steven Gerrard – who signed him – leaving and a new boss coming in.

In spite of these challenges, Sakala produced nine goals and three assists in 13 Premiership starts last term – playing 30 matches in total. He has shown that he has the quality to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch and hopefully, he will be able to take it up a notch with a season of experience under his belt.

The 25-year-old averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.05 in the Scottish top-flight and this shows that he is capable of delivering excellent displays in the division, which is why keeping him will be a boost to van Bronckhorst’s squad.

Supporters will surely want to see a player with his goalscoring potential remain at Ibrox this season.

Arsenal: Romano shares Leroy Sane latest

Reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shed some light on Arsenal’s reported interest in Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane.

The lowdown: Arsenal interested in Sane

A recent report from German outlet Bild (via Mundo Deportivo) claimed that the Gunners are keen on bringing the former Manchester City star back to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old signed for Bayern in 2020 and is believed to be valued at €70m (£59m) by the Bundesliga champions.

With speculation continuing to suggest that Sane could be on the move this summer, one well-informed transfer specialist has provided an update on the current state of play…

The latest: Romano shares Sane latest

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano has claimed that, despite the frequent interest, the 45-cap Germany ace is going nowhere as things stand.

He said: “I think he’s a player to watch in August maybe because, at the moment, Bayern are keeping him. I think they will not sign a new striker. Sane, but also [Serge] Gnabry extending the contract, [Kingsley] Coman, these players will stay at Bayern.

“Lot of links for this boy but, at the moment, he’s waiting to understand if Bayern will sign a centre striker or not, and there are no negotiations for Sane.”

The verdict: Fingers crossed

Valued at £54m and under contract in Germany until 2025 (Transfermarkt), there is certainly no need to panic from Bayern’s perspective, although the departure of Robert Lewandowski could yet force them into the market for a striker.

Predominantly operating as a left winger, having witnessed the arrival of positional rival Sadio Mane from Liverpool, Sane – who was hailed as a ‘scary talent’ and a ‘mesmerising’ player by sports broadcaster Daniel Garb in 2019 – may feel that his place as a regular in Julian Nagelsmann’s starting XI is under threat.

Last season, Sane Sofascore rating whilst successfully completing 1.9 dribbles, completing 1.6 key passes and taking 2.8 shots per game.

Boasting supreme versatility and elite attacking attributes (WhoScored), if a transfer does indeed become a possibility this summer, then the ever-ready Edu and the Arsenal hierarchy should immediately jump at the opportunity to add a high-quality operator to Mikel Arteta’s ranks.

Leeds willing to smash transfer record for Charles de Ketelaere

Leeds United would be willing to pay €40m (£34.7m) for Club Brugge forward Charles de Ketelaere, according to 90min.

The Lowdown: De Ketelaere not sure

The Whites have been heavily linked with a move for De Ketelaere over the last seven days. Journalist Dean Jones said it would be an ‘unbelievable signing’ and a ‘massive coup’ if Leeds managed to get a deal over the line ahead of Jesse Marsch’s first full season in charge.

De Ketelaere is viewed as a forward by those at Leeds, however, he has reportedly ‘said no’ to a move to Yorkshire after contact was made.

The Latest: Leeds still keen

90min journalist Graeme Bailey provided an update regarding De Ketelaere on Thursday. They were informed from ‘sources’ that Club Brugge are holding out for €40m (£34.7m) for the attacker, with Leeds ‘extremely keen’.

The report adds that both the Whites and Leicester City are willing to pay that asking price but look set to test the waters with an initial €30m (£25.9m) proposal, while AC Milan are also monitoring the situation.

The Verdict: Raphinha sale to be a domino effect?

It appears as if Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers group are willing to smash their transfer record for the second time this summer after already landing Brenden Aaronson for £29.56m, so fans can certainly take solace in what is a serious show of trust in Marsch.

However, they may have to wait until Raphinha’s future is resolved before splashing the cash. Leeds agreed on a £60m-£65m with Chelsea for the Brazilian, but it looks as if a move to Barcelona still isn’t out of the equation.

Securing a figure around the £60m mark for Raphinha could then allow Leeds to go all-in to try and convince De Ketelaere, providing he doesn’t move to Milan or Leicester in the meantime.

Romano drops Wolves update on Palhinha

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has delivered an update regarding Wolves’ long-standing pursuit of Sporting CP midfielder Joao Palhinha.

The Lowdown: Fulham join the race

With the future of Ruben Neves still very much up in the air, Bruno Lage will be on the lookout for reinforcements to strengthen his midfield ahead of the start of the new season, and Wolves fans are likely fed up of hearing Palhinha’s name at this point, such as been the extent of the links.

The 26-year-old is someone whose name has been circulating around Molineux for quite some time now, strongly linked with a move to the Premier League and even some reports in his homeland claiming a deal is agreed ‘in principle’.

However, newly-promoted Fulham appear to have joined the race for the maestro late on, and following a fresh update, it seems as though Wolves will now have to battle it out with the Cottagers, who have now made their official move.

The Latest: Romano drops Palhinha update

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that Fulham have now come to an agreement with Sporting over the transfer of Palhinha, but the final decision will be made by the player ‘soon’. He wrote:

“Fulham have reached an agreement with Sporting for João Palhinha, fee around €18m plus add ons. It’s up to the player now, also tempted by Wolves proposal.

“Palhinha will make a decision soon.”

The Verdict: Another one?

After missing out on Marquinhos, who has now joined Arsenal, Lage will be keen to not let a second deal in Palhinha slip away, and it would be a disaster if Wolves were to miss out on two targets so early in the window.

The £22.5m-rated ace, who was once hailed an “artist” and “sensational player” by sports journalist Josh Bunting, averaged an 87.8% pass completion rate and made three tackles per Liga Portugal game last season, via WhoScored, highlighting his composure and ability to control a game from the middle of the park.

These attributes are exactly what the Midlands outfit need in a player if they want to have a real shot at making a push for a European spot without Neves’ services, but they will just have to hope that Palhinha decides to commit his future to them rather than their new top-flight rivals.

In other news… a Wolves first-team starlet is reportedly close to agreeing a new contract at the Molineux.

Billy Gilmour could join Everton on loan

Everton securing the signing of Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour on loan would ‘suit all parties’, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Lowdown: Tricky loan spell

The 20-year-old spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan in the Premier League with Norwich City.

Whilst the Scotland international made 24 top-flight appearances for the Norfolk club, he came under fire for a number of his performances.

Gilmour was singled out by some travelling Canaries fans for his display during Norwich’s 3-0 pummeling at the hands of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in late December, with manager Dean Smith later coming out and defending the youngster.

The Latest: Brown’s claim on Gilmour

90min have reported that another loan move for Gilmour is on the cards, with Fulham, Bournemouth, and Rangers all named as possible destinations for the 2022/23 season.

However, with Frank Lampard now in full flow with the Toffees, Brown believes that a move to Everton could be perfect for the young Scotsman.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the Daily Star journalist claimed: “I think if Chelsea were to allow him on loan again, I suspect they would quite like him to go and play for Lampard because they know Lampard will look after him.

“And I think even if he doesn’t play every game, he would be an asset, so that seems like a move that would suit all parties to me.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Good move for all

Former Rangers striker Kenny Miller hailed the 20-year-old during their time together at the Glasgow club, claiming that Gilmour is a “special talent”.

Whilst in charge at Chelsea, Lampard was also full of praise for the youngster. Dubbing him an “outstanding” player, the current Toffees manager handed the Scotland gem 17 senior appearances for the west London outfit, two of which came in the Champions League.

Therefore, despite an underwhelming spell at Norwich, a loan move to Everton could revitalise Gilmour’s career in the Premier League, particularly with a trusted, familiar face in Lampard to guide him along.

Joyce drops huge Liverpool team news claim

Liverpool midfield pair Fabinho and Thiago are looking likely to feature in the Champions League final, reliable journalist Paul Joyce has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Liverpool face Madrid in Paris

Jurgen Klopp’s men face a gargantuan match on Saturday evening, as they take on Real Madrid in Paris in what is undoubtedly club football’s biggest game.

Liverpool are looking to win a seventh European Cup in their history, while most of these players are aiming to taste Champions League glory for the second time.

Fabinho and Thiago have been injury doubts in the lead-up to the game but a huge update has emerged regarding their involvement at the Stade de France.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-34/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: Joyce drops big team news claim

Taking to Twitter on before the match, Joyce confirmed Klopp’s comments over the duo, a hugely positive update.

“Jurgen Klopp says ‘it looks good’ on the fitness of both Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho ahead of the CL final.”

James Pearce of The Athletic had said earlier in the week that Thiago’s fitness in particular is ‘massive’.

The Verdict: Massive boost for Reds

The importance of both Fabinho and Thiago cannot be underplayed, with the pair arguably the difference between Liverpool securing glory or not.

The control and quality that they bring to the midfield are priceless – their record together is outstanding, too – and without them, the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric could dominate proceedings.

It feels highly likely that Fabinho will start, having trained for most of the week, and while Thiago could be on the substitutes’ bench, Klopp’s words certainly suggest that he too could even be involved from the off.

Rangers hit with Joe Aribo setback

A big Rangers setback has emerged regarding Ibrox gem Joe Aribo and his injury situation…

What’s the latest?

Journalist Andrew Dickson has revealed that the Nigeria international will miss the final of the Europa League if he is diagnosed with a concussion.

The midfielder came off injured in the first half on Thursday night after he was struck in the face by a powerful free-kick, with doubt now surrounding his availability in the coming weeks.

Dickson tweeted: “McGregor didn’t have much to do but made a crucial stop in the second half when he needed to, could do nothing about Nkunku’s glorious finish. Bassey’s now a fixture in front of him. And I hope Aribo is okay after a fair bang on the head. If it’s concussion, he misses Seville.”

The reporter has confirmed that Aribo would not be able to play in the showpiece clash in Spain, although it remains to be seen whether or not the 25-year-old was concussed.

Supporters will be gutted

Rangers supporters will surely be gutted by this claim, as it leaves a gigantic cloud of doubt over the Nigerian’s availability for the Europa League final later this month.

The midfielder has been a reliable option for Giovanni Van Bronckhorst to call upon in Europe, and the Dutch head coach will surely want him to be fit to face Eintracht Frankfurt on 18 May. Aribo has started 12 matches in this superb European run, playing 14 times in total, and has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.95 as he has chipped in with three assists.

In the Premiership, he has averaged a score of 7.09, scoring eight goals and providing five assists from midfield. He has proven that he can make a big impact in the final third with his ability on the ball, and that is why losing him for the Seville showdown would be a huge blow for the Gers.

Aribo is a consistently brilliant performer who has the potential to be a match-winner for Rangers with his contributions at the top end of the pitch, and fans will be concerned by a potential concussion to the 25-year-old, as losing his talent will weaken the squad given what he has been able to do on the pitch this season.

Hopefully he is healthy and enjoying the celebrations after the win over Leipzig, and if that is the case then the focus will turn to assess whether or not he will be able to play in the final. For now, though, the Ibrox faithful will be gutted by his knock and desperately hoping that he is cleared for action on Wednesday week.

Kohli becomes India's highest scoring Test captain

He went past Sunil Gavaskar and MS Dhoni to take the record

Shiva Jayaraman26-Jan-2018Kohli scores tough runs
On a pitch that was extremely difficult to bat on for most of the day – and misbehaved enough to trigger an official discussion on whether it was safe enough to continue playing on – Virat Kohli made 41 runs from 79 deliveries to help India along to a total that gave them the chance to score an elusive away win and only their third Test win in South Africa. During the course of the innings he went past MS Dhoni and Sunil Gavaskar to become India’s highest scoring Test captain. He has made 3456 runs at 65.20 in Tests while leading India.Early in his innings, Kohli was hit on the thumb while playing forward to a ball that climbed off a length from Kagiso Rabada. However, that didn’t stop the India captain from getting on to the front during the course of the rest of his stay at the crease: off the rest of the 40 balls that were bowled at him on full or good lengths, Kohli played forward to at least 17 balls. Kohli made 27 runs off 47 balls off those lengths at a strike rate of 57.44. On a pitch that troubled the batsmen with unpredictable bounce off full and good lengths, Kohli batted well to return a control percentage of 72.34% off those lengths.Kohli’s tally of 95 runs in this Test took his aggregate for the series to 286 runs – the second-most scored by an India batsman in a series in South Africa. No India captain has made as many runs as Kohli has in this series. Before Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar’s 241 runs in three matches in 1996-97 were the highest by an India captain in a series in South Africa. Rahane makes it look easy
Sat out of the first two Tests of the series, Rahane came in to bat with India 93 runs ahead. He looked the most comfortable batsman on the third day, scoring rapidly off lengths that were troubling batsmen at the other end. Rahane faced 33 deliveries pitched on full and good lengths, and was in control of his shots a whopping 90.00% of the time – easily the best control shown by any of the India batsmen.

Bhuvneshwar contributes with the bat again
Bhuvneshwar Kumar added 33 runs to his crucial contribution of 30 runs in the first innings making him only the second India batsman in this match to get 30 or more runs in both innings. In a series in which batsmen have struggled to put together meaningful partnerships, his 55-run stand with Rahane in India’s second innings was the second time he added 50 or more runs with a partner in these Tests. Out of the six fifty-plus stands India have had in the series, only Kohli has been involved in more such stands. In fact, Bhuvneshwar has faced more balls per dismissal in this series than any other India batsman. In four innings that he has batted, Bhuvneshwar has faced 252 balls, getting dismissed three times.

The rise of young quicks, and underdog success

Players, coaches and officials on four major talking points from CPL 2016

Colin Benjamin15-Aug-2016The emergence of potential fast bowlers
When West Indies dominated world cricket, their battery of top-notch fast bowlers was arguably the most important facet in their armoury, and the decline in quality fast-bowling options since 2000 was a key factor in the team’s fall. Caribbean pitches now do not usually encourage the development of fast bowlers, as spinners take a lion’s share of the wickets. However, Ian Bishop noted on Twitter during the CPL how Michael Hilton, the head groundsman at Sabina Park had done an excellent job with the pitch. It was a point also reinforced by Barbados Tridents coach Robin Singh, who said, “While the competition this year was certainly better than previously, I was particularly impressed and happy about the standard of pitches.”The end result was that some upcoming West Indies fast bowlers had an encouraging tournament, on surfaces that kept them interested. They included Alzarri Joseph (who notably hit AB de Villiers on the head during the series, and went on to have an impressive debut Test versus India), Kesrick Williams, Sheldon Cottrell and Delorn Johnson. Add to this Miguel Cummins claiming a six-wicket haul in the St Lucia Test against India, and Shannon Gabriel’s improvement since the tri-series, and potentially the team has some solid fast-bowling options to work with.West Indies fast bowling legend Andy Roberts, who was part of the St Lucia Zouks coaching staff, wants to see the WICB take steps to harness the talent. “These young fast bowlers were encouraging, but it’s difficult to judge from just four overs whether they are suited for Test cricket, even though they got better pitches to bowl on in the CPL than they do in the domestic season,” he said. “I find it funny that the WICB thinks its new Professional Cricket League is the end of all of it, when clearly the production line of international-ready talent is not there.”[The bowlers] should be immediately put into a camp where they can pick the brains of those like us, if the board wishes to engage us, who have been there and done it, as well as working on their fast bowling, strength and endurance.”St Kitts and Nevis Patriots finished at the bottom of the table with two wins•CPL/SportsfileWarriors and Patriots: one up, one down
After a football season in which underdogs such as Leicester City and Portugal produced stellar team work to win the English Premier League and European Championship respectively, Guyana Amazon Warriors threatened to do the same for a while in the CPL.”We kept hearing that the Warriors was not the best team, didn’t have any big stars, so really no one was expecting anything from us,” said Amazon Warriors captain Rayad Emrit, who previously played with Barbados Tridents. “So our mantra was to use that as motivation, plus we had an owner who gave us everything we needed. It is disappointing for the franchise that after getting to another final, we couldn’t bring the title to our great fans in Guyana.”Similar to last season, when Tabraiz Shamsi’s CPL efforts led to his being called up for international service for South Africa, Australian Chris Lynn, who led the Warriors batting impressively will surely be representing Australia more in the future. At the other end were St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. “I was very surprised and disappointed at the Patriots because overall we felt there were six very evenly matched teams on show,” said CPL CEO Damien O’Donohoe. “A betting man would have certainly thought Patriots could have gone far in this competition. He went on to point out that the team management had had “a stern review” and said fans could be in for a surprise regarding what type of team Patriots have for the 2017 season. Two youngsters to watch
As noted before the competition, arguably the biggest young player to watch out for was wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran. His two excellent half-centuries made everyone take notice. “The first time I saw him bat, I told Kieron Pollard they’ve got to find a way of including him in the national side,” said de Villiers at a post-game interview. “He’s a special talent.””He has dominated at all youth levels and I can only expect him to build on his CPL performances,” commentator Daren Ganga said.”Obviously he is still young and can further develop his game, especially his keeping,” Tridents coach Singh said. “But he is a superb talent who fits the modern trend of what most teams hope get out of keeper-batsmen.”Although he didn’t produce any major performances with bat or ball, Jamaican Rovman Powell displayed enough promise with a few cameo knocks that had some suggesting he could be the next Andre Russell.”Powell’s background – he never had a father in his life, with his mom has being his main parental figure, and his overall drive to pay her back is what is pushing him as a cricketer,” said Jamaica Tallawahs coach Paul Nixon.”Young Powell is blessed with talent, like all upcoming West Indies players,” said Ganga, “though I would like to see him exposed to first-class cricket so that his talents can be seen in all formats.”Jamaica Tallawahs’ Kesrick Williams was one of the fast bowlers who impressed through the tournament•CPL/SportsfileClub v country

West Indies have struggled in the Tests against India, and former India captain Sourav Ganguly criticised the WICB for prioritising the CPL over the Test series.A combination of retirements, injuries, and Kolpak status, meant the likes of Chris Gayle, Russell, Dwayne Bravo, Lendl Simmons, Ravi Rampaul and Jerome Taylor played the CPL instead of the Tests. However, even discounting these senior players, the team was unable to pick some of impressive upcoming players even, because they were not contracted by the WICB.A CPL deal is worth more than playing Test cricket for West Indies. Young Joseph was not picked until Patriots were eliminated. Sunil Narine could not be picked, nor was talented young opener Evin Lewis. Instead, the failed experiment of using Rajendra Chandrika continued. This was a notable difference to how things operate in the Big Bash and NatWest T20, where Cricket Australia and the ECB, because they own those competitions, pay their players well and get first preference on picking players when matches in those leagues clash with home Test seasons. This issue is set to return to the fore next year, when India come back to the Caribbean for five one-day internationals.”We are operating in a cricket landscape where there is no black and white solution to deal with the rise and importance of T20 leagues,” said Ganga. “Yes there were many pros and cons to playing CPL alongside the India Tests, but for me I didn’t see any real issue doing so.””It was always going to be a challenge playing the two competitions together and we are going to work with WICB and will be sitting down to look at this with the board in September,” said O’Donohoe.
