Lyon hails Watson's Gabba bowling

Nathan Lyon picked up five wickets during Australia’s win at the Gabba. Josh Hazlewood starred on debut with seven, Mitchell Johnson rattled India with four in the second innings, Mitchell Starc came back after a shaky start and collected two. But in among the bigger wicket tallies from the frontline bowlers, Lyon said Shane Watson’s efforts in keeping up the pressure could not be overlooked. The hamstring injury sustained by Mitchell Marsh on the first day meant Watson had to play the all-round role through nearly the whole Test and sent down 27.4 overs – the most he has delivered in a Test for two years. On that occasion, the 47.4 overs he bowled against Sri Lanka in Hobart, where Ben Hilfenhaus was injured mid-match, led to his breaking down in the next Test at the MCG.Watson’s workload in Brisbane was not such that the Australians will be worried about his body, but again plenty of bowling will be required of him in Melbourne with Marsh replaced by the specialist batsman Joe Burns. Watson collected just one wicket in the Brisbane victory, but went at just 2.38 runs per over and his nagging accuracy and swing helped his colleagues pick up wickets at the other end.”I think Shane bowled fantastic,” Lyon said after the squad arrived in Melbourne on Monday. “He really held one end down, and we talk about bowling in partnerships. I think a lot of credit has to go to Watto. I know a lot of people don’t see it that way – he got one wicket and none in the second.”But the way he held together one end and created pressure from one end was allowing us to take wickets at the other end. A lot of credit goes to Shane. I’m pretty sure he can bowl a lot worse than that and come out and take five-for. He can be damaging on any pitch. I’m looking forward to hopefully bowling in tandem with him out there on Boxing Day.”Lyon himself delivered 35.4 overs at the Gabba, barely half of the 70.1 he sent down at Adelaide Oval in the first Test, as the fast men found pace and bounce from the Brisbane pitch. However, the corollary of that was that captain Steven Smith was fined 60% of his match fee for a slow over rate and faces suspension if he as captain is again responsible for another over-rate offence in the next 12 months.”I think that just means I get to bowl more overs,” Lyon joked. “That’s up to Steve. It was pretty hot conditions up at the Gabba, so I can see how it was slowed down. I didn’t realise it was that slow, and we won in four days so I’m not really sure how that works. But it’s not up to me to worry about, it’s up to the captain and the coach. But I think I’ll just get to bowl more overs. Steve [jokingly] mentioned I was going to open the bowling I think.”Lyon will likely be part of an altered bowling attack at the MCG on Boxing Day, with Ryan Harris expected to come back in for Starc after missing the Brisbane Test due to a quadriceps injury. Peter Siddle has also remained in the squad after being left out and made 12th man at the Gabba.”I spoke to both those guys yesterday and they bowled well at the Gabba,” Lyon said. “It’s a great position to have those guys putting their hands up for selection. We’ve got a good stock of bowlers at the moment.”

Me sinto muito bem.

O próximo adversário do Corinthians é outro carioca: o Fluminense.

Cook should quit captaincy to recover form – Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen has said Alastair Cook “has shown he does not have the tactical brain to lead the side” and would fare better if he stepped down from captaincy. In his column for the , Pietersen highlighted the importance of Cook, the opening batsman, in the context of setting up a Test and said England needed that aspect more than his leadership skills.”He could have another 10 years left but his batting requires emergency help and he needs to speak to someone away from the England set-up,” Pietersen said. “He has to be honest with himself.”I had an issue with left-arm spin so went to seek advice from others. I spoke to Indians, the best players of spin in the world, and asked them how I could solve it. I spoke to people in the Indian Premier League, spent hours on the phone and communicated via email with coaches and players.”Cook still wants to be the man that takes England forward from their current slump. But after ceding the Lord’s Test – England’s seventh loss in 10 matches – on a green pitch seemingly to the home side’s advantage, he admitted it was one of his “darkest experiences” and that his position would become “untenable” if his search for form remained fruitless over the remaining three Tests against India.”The hardest issue for him [Cook] to deal with is concerns over his tactical expertise,” Pietersen said. “His batting has been under the microscope before. He knows how to deal with that. But captaincy is different, especially now he has lost his right-hand man in Matt Prior. Cook needs people with experience of international cricket around him, which Peter Moores and Paul Farbrace lack.”According to Pietersen, “he should do what is right for England and resign the captaincy”, allowing him to focus on his game and regaining the sort of the form that made him England’s leading century-maker in Tests. The Ageas Bowl is the scene of Cook’s next challenge and, with the team 0-1 down, Pietersen believes a counterpunch is needed to improve Cook’s game.”He is 6ft 3in and a strong, stocky guy. He should be batting like Matthew Hayden. He should not stand there and let medium pacers bowl him half-volleys all day long and get him out,” Pietersen said. “Someone of his size, strength, ability and with his eye should be hitting half-volleys for four all day.”Look at Cook’s head when he is nicking off at the moment. It is above or behind his front knee. He is not heading down the ground and a strong guy like that opening the innings with a build like Hayden should be hitting the ball straight. The cover drive is the easiest shot in the world to play. Every kid can do it so why not someone as talented as Cook? Batting is all about hitting balls in straight lines. A guy who has scored 25 Test hundreds can change his game slightly and start driving off the front foot.”Cook needn’t lose hope though, reckons Pietersen. He said England should take a hint from other teams enlisting former players – like Marvan Atapattu for Sri Lanka, Rahul Dravid for India and Shane Warne for Australia – and utilising their experience. Neither Moores or Farbrace played international cricket and England discarded Graham Gooch, their leading run-scorer in Tests, as batting coach at the start of the summer but Graham Thorpe and Mark Ramprakash remain involved.”How many ex-international players have England had recently working with them? None. There is so much knowledge in English cricket going to waste,” he said.”There are so many great cricket brains in the Sky studios. Put that radio in your ear, listen to them on the balcony or in the dressing room and Mike Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Warne or whoever could be saying something you didn’t know and could implement in the game.”

Israrullah double-ton gives Peshawar innings win

Group I

Peshawar jumped to second place with an innings win over Lahore Ravi in Peshawar. Israrullah’s double hundred was the highlight of the match which gave Peshawar a 279-run lead in the first innings.Lahore opted to bat but managed only 239 despite good starts from Abdul Wahab Dar (40), Jahangir (51) and Tanzeel Altaf (52). However, Azizullah’s four wickets restricted them before Israrullah registered a career-best 222, and along with Adil Amin (51) and Mohammad Idrees (86), charged them to 514.Lahore were batting to save the game but could not succeed as Jibran Khan took 4 for 32 and the Lahore captain Jahangir Mirza’s 72 went in vain.

Group II

Faisalabad were left one wicket away from victory and had to settle for a draw with Hyderabad who remained at the bottom of the table.Chasing 305, Hyderabad ended the last day on 244 for 9 with a fighting fifty from Lal Kumar (59*). Asked to bat, Faisalabad scored 323 with a hundred from Ammar Mahmood and a fifty from Imran Ahmed (60) as Nasir Awais (6 for 80) ran through their tail. The Hyderabad batsmen managed starts but not any big scores as Imran Ahmed took 4 for 42 and Faisal Athar (53) took them to 287. Faisalabad built further on their lead with a hundred from Shahid Siddiq (107) but the absence of any substantial scores from their lower order kept their lead to 304.Hyderabad lost wickets regularly because of Salman Ali (4 for 86) and Naseer Akram (3 for 49) but Haris Khan, Mir Ali (35) and Kumar prevented a defeat.

A final fighting for relevance

The IPL final takes place in Kolkata on Sunday, but all the news surrounding the tournament is about events off the field

The Preview by George Binoy25-May-2013Match factsSunday, May 26
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Big PictureThe IPL final takes place in Kolkata on Sunday, but all the news surrounding the tournament is about events off the field. As Indian cricket and its fans grapple with the dismaying allegations of the past week, the old Apartheid-era slogan – No normal sport in an abnormal society – comes to mind. However, despite the formal charges of corruption against top Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan, the 2013 season will reach its scheduled end, when Chennai Super Kings play their fifth IPL final in six seasons, against Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens. An assertion of the game being bigger than the individuals that comprise it, no matter how abnormal the environs.Super Kings have had an outstanding season, finishing top of the league with 11 wins out of 16 games, and blazed through the first qualifier to seal their finals berth. They are the only team to have won more games than they lost away from home this season; they have the tournament’s highest run-scorer and joint top wicket-taker. Their fielders have set standards not matched by most competitors. They have been the IPL’s most formidable franchise since its inception, and have the opportunity to enhance that reputation by winning a third title. To do that, however, not only do MS Dhoni’s men have to deal with, and overcome the turmoil caused by Meiyappan’s arrest, but they also have to deal with a tough opponent.Mumbai Indians. Their habit of buying the flavours of the season, and of tinkering constantly with their line-up, produced largely disappointing results in IPLs past. This season began the same way, but they took tough decisions – dropping Ricky Ponting and appointing Rohit Sharma as captain – and hit upon a balanced and successful combination earlier than usual. They delighted their home crowds by winning all eight matches at the Wankhede Stadium, but the final is at a neutral venue, and they lost five league games away from home. They are the best franchise to never win the IPL, but that accolade is a slight to the millions that have gone into making the team.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first)
Chennai Super Kings WLWLW
Mumbai Indians WLLWW
Watch out forThe Eden Gardens crowd. They are famously passionate. They’ve disrupted international matches because they were displeased, they’ve booed the Indian team because they felt Sourav Ganguly was ill-treated, and they’ve created the most electric atmospheres in famous Indian victories. How will they react to the allegations and charges of corruption in the IPL? Will they just not turn up? Will they arrive in tens of thousands and make their disappointment heard? Or will they remain indifferent and cheer as though nothing has happened?A clash of tactics. The Super Kings bat extremely deep, deeper than is really necessary in Twenty20cricket. Yet they prefer to bat watchfully for the first ten overs, before going mental in the next ten. The strategy may seem ridiculously conservative, but it rarely fails them. Their bowling attack is far from being the best in the league, but there is no obvious weak link, and they use the advantage of a usually daunting target to defend to tremendous effect. Mumbai Indians play to a different plan. Their batting order is short – it ends at No. 6. Only four of those are tested match-winners, compared to Super Kings’ seven, and Mumbai have relied on those four to get the job done. Their bowling attack, however, is power packed and should Mitchell Johnson, Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh have good days, they could neutralise CSK’s guns.Team newsUnless Sachin Tendulkar has recovered from his arm injury, Mumbai have little reason to change the combination that beat Royals in the qualifier. Mumbai coach John Wright said Tendulkar was unlikely to play. Pragyan Ojha, however, could also be in doubt after the left-arm spinner hurt his shoulder while diving during the first innings on Friday and had to leave the field.Mumbai Indians: 1 Aditya Tare, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 4 Rohit Sharma (capt), 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Ambati Rayudu, 7 Harbhajan Singh, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Rishi Dhawan, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Pragyan Ojha/Munaf Patel.Barring any last-minute fitness problems, the Super Kings should also field the same team that beat Mumbai in the first qualifier in Delhi.Chennai Super Kings: 1 M Vijay, 2 Michael Hussey, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 5 S Badrinath, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Albie Morkel, 9 Chris Morris, 10 R Ashwin, 11 Mohit Sharma.Pitch and conditionsContrary to the pitches used during the league stage at Eden Gardens, the surface for the qualifier between Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals was excellent for batting. And the outfield, despite it being damp from rain, was quick. The weather forecast for Kolkata on Sunday is predominantly cloudy with a chance of showers. It is unlikely that the weather will force a washout, though, and even if it does, there is a reserve day for the final on the following day.Stats and trivia The head-to-head record between the two teams this season is 2-1 in Mumbai’s favour. They won in Chennai and at the Wankhede, but lost the first qualifier in Delhi. Mumbai have an outstanding record at Eden Gardens, winning five out of the six games they’ve played there. Super Kings’ record isn’t shabby either, with four wins in five games. The Super Kings’ top order has a superb record in IPL finals: Suresh Raina averages 60 and strikes at 168, M Vijay averages 54 and strikes at 158, and Michael Hussey’s stats are 58.50 and 133.Mumbai have not had any stand-out batsmen against the Super Kings. Rohit Sharma has the best record – 248 runs at an average of 35 in eight innings. Lasith Malinga, however, has 19 wickets at an average of 18 and economy of 7.04 against the Super Kings.Quotes”The players and support staff are distressed by the allegations and news reports considering the CSK franchise, the IPL and Indian cricket. The players and the support staff have no knowledge of either the betting or the separate spot-fixing allegations. As difficult as it is, all our focus is on appearing in the final tomorrow.”
.”At this stage Sachin is probably a doubt for tomorrow. We will take a call tomorrow. He is still a big part of our team whether he plays or not. Aditya has done a great job. Sachin is a big part of Mumbai Indians. We play for people like Sachin. We are a family. It’s probably unlikely. We will take a final call tomorrow.”

BCCI to wait for Supreme Court clarification on Modi ban

The BCCI has decided to seek clarification from the Supreme Court regarding its resolution to ban former IPL chairman Lalit Modi for life

The BCCI has decided to seek clarification from the Supreme Court regarding its resolution to ban former IPL chairman Lalit Modi for life. The decision was taken at a working committee meeting on Saturday, in the wake of Modi’s expected return to cricket administration as the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) president.”The members decided that the BCCI must intervene in the SLP (special leave petition) filed by Mr. Rungta in the Supreme Court challenging the Rajasthan Sports Act and get clarified the position of BCCI to enable the enforcement of its resolution passed on September 25, 2013 expelling Mr. Lalit Modi,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement. While expelling Modi on multiple charges of misconduct, the BCCI had said, “he shall not in future be entitled to hold any position or office, or be admitted in any Committee or any member or associate member of the Board”. Modi, however, got his candidature for the RCA presidency approved by the Supreme Court by exploiting a technicality that the RCA was governed by the Rajasthan Sports Act. The BCCI is likely to file an application in the ongoing case, filed by former RCA chief Kishore Rungta, in the Supreme Court before the next hearing on January 6.In the lead-up to the RCA election on December 19, the BCCI had warned its affiliate of severe consequences if they allowed Modi to return as an administrator. At Saturday’s meeting the working committee decided to take severe action against the RCA, pending the Supreme Court’s decision, but in a manner that would not harm the state association’s cricketers.”It was further decided that subject to the decision of the Supreme Court, strict disciplinary action should be taken against the delinquent member while protecting the interest of the game in the state of Rajasthan,” Patel said. According to a member who attended the meeting, while it was agreed the association had to be “taught a lesson”, the board also agreed that it “shouldn’t harm the players who are at no fault”.Minutes before the working committee meeting was about to begin, Mehmood Abdi, Modi’s attorney and RCA’s deputy president-in-waiting, was prevented from attending. Following an RCA executive committee’s decision to make a case before the BCCI, Abdi had flown to Chennai for the meeting. However, because the RCA isn’t a member of the working committee and Abdi was not a special invitee, his request to attend was refused.
