Mumbai completed their rout of fellow Maharashtra team, Vidarbha, in just 5.4 overs into the final day. They began the day needing two wickets after having reduced Vidarbha – who were chasing 530 – to 177 for 8. Shardul Thakur accounted for the last two wickets, registering a first-class personal best of 4 for 48. He bounced the No. 10 Akshay Wakhare repeatedly before the tail-ender finally gloved one through to the wicketkeeper. No. 11 Sandeep Singh didn’t fancy much of it either as he backed away and swung at the third ball he faced, playing on to his stumps. Shrikant Wagh remained unbeaten on 41.Mumbai now lead the Group A table with 19 points, and are three points clear of Punjab, who are placed second. However, Mumbai will be without the services of Zaheer Khan and Ajinkya Rahane for the rest of the league matches as both of them have been included for the tour of South Africa. The attack, especially, will be inexperienced now with Ajit Agarkar retired and Dhawal Kulkarni injured.
ScorecardKarnataka completed a tricky chase on the final day to beat Odisha by four wickets in Cuttack. Odisha had started the day on 169 for 4, with Biplab Samantray and Abhilash Mallick not out on 50 and 47 respectively. Mallick was the first to go however soon after reaching a half-century when he was caught by Kunal Kapoor off the bowling of Abhimanyu Mithun. Subhrajit Sahoo followed, trapped in front by Mithun, while Alok Sahoo and Deepak Behera became the bowler’s fourth and fifth victims not too long after. Both opening bowlers, HS Sharath and Mithun, shared all the wickets as they took a five-for each, with Odisha being bundled for 279 in 89 overs. With just 127 runs to chase, Karnataka’s openers did not create a foundation as Mayank Agarwal was caught behind off the bowling of Suryakant Pradhan for just 5. Ganesh Satish came in at No. 3 and together with KL Rahul was able to put on a 58-run stand. Ganesh Satish fell just five overs later as Karnataka needed to build useful partnerships to see out the chase. Three wickets fell in the space of just six runs to leave Karnataka at 109 for 6, but Kunal Kapoor and Abrar Kazi held their nerve to see them knock off the target in the 42nd over. Robin Uthappa batted at No. 7 as a result of a hamstring injury. With this result Karnataka move up to fourth place in Group A, where they have a buffer of four points over Delhi and Odisha.
ScorecardThe encounter between Jharkhand and Gujarat petered out into a stalemate when Jharkhand finished their second innings at stumps on the fourth day with 166 for 7. With this result, Gujarat are able to move ahead of Punjab to second place on 17 points. Saurabh Tiwary, who had retired hurt on 0*, came back as the No. 8 batsman to add 50 off 87 balls. Bhavin Thakkar who had retired hurt on 2* on the third evening also returned to add an unbeaten 50. The pair added 90 runs for the eighth wicket and ensured that Jharkhand took away at least one point from the encounter. Beginning the day on 28 for no loss, opener Rameez Nemat was the first to fall when he was caught behind off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah. Just four balls later and Jharkhand suffered a double-blow when Bhavik Thaker was caught by Samit Gohel for just 2. Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals as the top and middle-order, save for Kumar Deobrat’s 22, succumbed to the pressure applied by Gujarat’s opening bowlers.

Prime Doleshwar lead table with third win

Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club continued their remarkable winning streak, beating Prime Bank by five wickets in Savar. The unfashionable club from Dhaka’s south has now defeated three big names, having slayed Abahani and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in their last two matches.Offspinners Tillakaratne Sampath and Sohag Gazi made the difference by picking three wickets each. Sampath, Dilshan’s younger brother, removed countrymen Lahiru Thirimanne and Jeevan Mendis to trigger a middle-order collapse. Prime Bank never recovered from losing those quick wickets, getting bowled out for 182 in 48.5 overs.Saikat Ali and Thirimanne scored half-centuries but Prime Doleshwar kept it tight even when Taibur Rahman added 44 for the seventh wicket with Fariduddin.Prime Doleshwar’s reply didn’t start well, losing two wickets at 13, but their Sri Lankan pair of Roshen Silva and Sampath added 89 runs for the fifth wicket to get them very close to the winning score. He walked in at the sixth over with his side two down, but soon turned things around with Imrul Kayes. The pair added 122 runs for the third wicket with Imrul hitting his first fifty of the league.Raqibul Hasan complemented the pair, and continued to milk the CCS bowlers after both Styris and Imrul got out. He remained unbeaten on 58, as Gazi Tank completed the win in the final over.Earlier, the CCS batsman continued their hot-and-cold performance as they put up 255 for 7. They have made two scores of below 100, including being bowled out for 35 in their first game, and also scored 200-plus twice in their four matches.Salman Hossain and Gihan Rupasinghe made fifties, the pair also adding 82 for the fourth wicket which gave the lower order the impetus to push the total past the 200-run mark.A pair of 70s from Anamul Haque and Shalika Karunanayake helped set up Victoria Sporting Club‘s second win in the Dhaka Premier League. They beat Kalabagan Krira Chakra by 85 runs in Fatullah after they posted 231 in 48.4 overs.Anamul and Karunanayake added 88 runs for the third wicket after they were 44 for 2 in the 13th over. His 70 came off 84 balls with three sixes and three fours respectively. Karunanayake was sixth out in the 42nd over, facing 79 balls with four fours and three sixes.Kalabagan’s chase started cautiously but they soon suffered a middle-order collapse, in which they plummeted from 80 for 2 to 93 for 6. Richardson gives Worcs edge at Kent

ScorecardAlan Richardson took his 19th first-class five-wicket haul•PA Photos

The bottom two sides in the County Championship crossed swords at cloudy Canterbury where 14 wickets fell during a poor opening day’s cricket between Kent and Worcestershire.Alan Richardson bagged 5 for 41 as basement hosts Kent were skittled for 159 inside 51.2 overs, but the eighth-placed visitors also struggled in reaching 105 for 4 – to go into day two trailing by 54.Without a win from their opening three matches, Kent got off to a reasonable start at 35 without loss and having been invited to bat first by the winless visitors. But Rob Key’s decision to shoulder arms against the naggingly accurate Richardson gifted him his first wicket as the ball jagged in to peg back Key’s off stump and send Kent into tailspin that saw them lose all 10 wickets inside the next 40 overs.Richardson removed both Brendan Nash and Michael Powell for ducks. Nash caught at second slip off a leg-cutter and Powell held at third slip after Gareth Andrew parried the initial chance in the gully. Richardson took a breather after an excellent opening burst of 10-6-9-3 and though the floodlights came on soon afterwards, Kent’s situation dulled further.Ben Harmison, on his season’s first Championship appearance, clipped uppishly off his legs to be caught at midwicket and Darren Stevens also played across the line to fall lbw to Andrew.Kent’s capitulation gathered momentum after lunch as they lost their next three wickets for four runs in the space of six deliveries. Andrew skittled Geraint Jones for 16 then snared home skipper James Tredwell leg before five balls later, winning the appeal despite Tredwell’s big push forward in defence.Opener Sam Northeast square drove Andrew through cover point to post a 97-ball 50 with eight boundaries – his first half-century of the championship summer – only to be caught behind without addition when Richardson returned for a second spell.Kent saved some pride with a ninth-wicket stand worth 43 between Mark Davies and Matt Coles, who made 21 from No. 9, that ended when Coles swished across the line to depart leg before to Jack Shantry.Davies continued to hit out, clipping 40 from 51 balls, before slicing an ambitious drive against Richardson high to point to end Kent’s innings and send the players in for tea. With the floodlights still on Worcestershire’s reply began, but they too were soon in trouble as Shreck pinned Matthew Pardoe leg before when barely shuffling from the crease. Mark Davies accounted for Daryl Mitchell in similar fashion and then re-arranged the stumps of Sri Lankan Test batsman Thilan Samaraweera to leave the visitors in dire straits at 34 for 3.Moeen Ali and Alexei Kervezee dug deep in a fourth-wicket stand worth 70 in 16.1 overs with Ali notching the second 50 of the day from 86 balls and with six fours. But Tredwell’s decision to re-introduce Coles for a second spell paid immediate dividends when he had Ali caught behind from an ill-advised cut shot.

Graham Clark century puts Durham in charge

Rescuing visitors from 82 for 4, Clark shares stands of 124 with Ollie Robinson and an unbroken 124 with George Drissell

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay02-May-2025Graham Clark celebrated his fifth Rothesay County Championship century with a pristine innings to put Durham in charge against Hampshire.Clark led Durham’s run surge, having been 82 for 4, with partnerships of 124 with Ollie Robinson, who scored 76, and 124 unbroken with George Drissell – who reached the close on 58 not out.Clark – who hadn’t reached three figures since 2023 – ended the day unbeaten on 110, with Durham following up their victory over Worcestershire by totting up 330 for 5 under the sun at Utilita Bowl.Hampshire’s Kyle Abbott was the star of the morning session, as his three wickets put Hampshire on top, after Durham had chosen to bat first on a wicket previously used in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup women’s competition under perfect blue skies.Emilio Gay – who returned from injury – had played with intent but his heavy hands cost him as he pushed away from his body and edged to second slip after a 16-ball 19.Will Rhodes was more circumspect in his 22 but fell for Abbott’s midwicket trap, as the South African bowled into the left-hander’s ribs to produce a pull to the prowling Felix Organ.Alex Lees had been the equal to Abbott in his first spell, but a change of ends and coming wider of the crease saw the bowler win the battle. The new angle exploited a gap between bat and pad to find a route into his stumps. The 80 for 3 at lunch became 82 for 4 12 balls afterwards as Colin Ackermann swished at Brad Wheal and was caught behind. But a mixture of a softening ball, even hotter weather, and two batters who made their task look like child’s play evened up the afternoon session.Neither Robinson nor Clark ever seemed to actively attack the bowler, merely waiting for opportunities to keep a constant flow of runs.Having scored almost 900 runs last season – at an average of 48 – Robinson’s only contribution over 20 so far this season had been the unbeaten 22 which got his side over the line against Worcestershire last week.Four of his six dismissals had been as a result of either edging or falsely playing outside his off stump, but here he was tight, disciplined and decisive in the corridor of uncertainty. That extra patience against pace was rewarded once he faced Liam Dawson – taking the newly awarded Wisden Cricketer of the Year for three boundaries in a row as he closed in on his half-century in 66 deliveries.Clark – who was also not out in the chase at Visit Worcestershire New Road – was the more watchful of the pair, but wary, having got a start in each of his innings of 46, 62, 33, 16 and 20* but not progressing to three figures. The only time he truly let loose was against Sonny Baker. The quick honoured a bouncer ploy and was taken for a quartet of fours in succession. Otherwise, he was humble in his 81-ball fifty.Robinson misstepped when his swing across the line to Dawson saw him bowled, to end a 124-run stand, while Drissell survived an early drop. But from there, Drissell stepped into Robinson’s mould to build on Durham’s growing advantage.Drissell came out after tea with a pep in his shot-making – as he tried to make the most of the older ball before the 80-over mark. His towering six back over Dawson’s head was the most sweetly timed shot of the day.He made his maiden County Championship half-century in 100 balls, and the second new ball caused no issues for him and Robinson.Clark then took centre-stage as he brought up his first ton in Division One, in 188 balls to underscore an impressive fightback from Durham.

Syed Shahid Akbar dies at 54

Syed Shahid Akbar, a Hyderabad prodigy in the ’70s, has died of a multiple organ failure at the age of 54

Sidharth Monga29-Nov-2012Syed Shahid Akbar, a Hyderabad prodigy in the ’70s, has died of a multiple organ failure at the age of 54. Akbar’s is one of the more poignant stories of what could have been. His contemporaries all expected him to play for India, but Akbar couldn’t quite make it. He ended with just 31 first-class matches, and a highest score of 97.He was a dashing left-hand opening batsman, and an electric fielder in the days before Mohammad Azharuddin had arrived, “the best in Hyderabad in those days”. Harsha Bhogle, who played Universities cricket with Akbar, says observers in Hyderabad cricket circles used to imagine him opening with Sunil Gavaskar even before he had made his Ranji debut, at the age of 18, in 1976.Arshad Ayub, former India offspinner, was a dear friend and colleague. He played with Akbar in school, in university, and for Hyderabad. He regrets they didn’t do it together for India. He remembers Akbar as a nice person, whom he never saw “even raise his voice to anybody”. Ayub says, “He was probably the best talent around during the time. Unfortunate that he didn’t make the grade.”Akbar played his last first-class game in 1984, and faded away. He kept working at State Bank of India before taking voluntary retirement. Ayub says he wasn’t very social after his cricketing days, but didn’t look back with regret. He kept watching a lot of cricket, both on TV and in Hyderabad, and would discuss a lot with Ayub. He remained a voracious reader, and would share the books with Ayub after finishing. Ayub is left with a valuable gift: all the books Akbar shared with him.Akbar is survived by his wife, and a daughter who lives in Australia.

Points shared after day four washout

ScorecardNetherlands and the UAE shared seven points each after the Intercontinental Cup match ended in a draw after no play was possible on the fourth day in a rainy Deventer. The result meant that both teams are now placed in the middle of the table with 30 points each. The highlight of the match was debutant Shahbaz Bashir’s century on the third day which helped Netherlands score 308 runs. The two teams will play two ODIs – Rotterdam on July 21 and Deventer on July 23 – but the possibility of rain being a factor remains high after two full days were lost in Deventer.
