Liverpool fans debate European Super League

The last 48 hours have been seismic for the Premier League and Liverpool FC.

Included in initial plans for a European Super League, the Reds faced backlash from all quarters of the footballing world, including from their own supporters.

Banners were placed outside of Anfield and protests took place until eventually, the club confirmed their withdrawal from any proposal with a statement late on Tuesday evening.

It brought to an end a dramatic chain of events for the club, Jurgen Klopp and his squad who publicly expressed their displeasure at the prospect both in the public domain and on social media.

With Liverpool now finally distancing themselves from the Super League, we asked a panel of Reds’ supporters to give us thier thoughts on the premise of the Super League and how they felt about their club’s owners being major players in the plot to form the breakaway Super League.

Sam Walker – @OneSGW

“It had definitely been coming since 1992. UEFA have been trying to organically create their own version of it but they got too greedy. I am not happy football has chosen this path because it is taking the integrity away but I was glad that Liverpool were moving with the elite.

If I had to choose between taking a stand and being a mediocre club against being part of the elite football league, I’m taking the latter! It doesn’t matter that we were part of the driving force. It was happening anyway. So it could have been a benefit to the club that we are ahead of the game. Fans can’t scream ‘#Mbappe21’ then talk about socialism in the next sentence. If we want success in this era of football, this is the right path. I hate it but I will live with it until I can’t.”

Jack Gill – @jacklfcgill

“As a Liverpool fan, I was enraged. Football has been going this way for a while but the statement on Sunday night, had it been carried out, would have completely destroyed the game that we know and love. FSG have gone against everything that the club, the city and us as supporters stand for. Not only is the Super League an act of greed, it would have torn away the competition and strips football of its roots. Shanks will be spinning in his grave and I’m sure Jurgen Klopp wasn’t happy about the decision either.”

Will Woodward – @willjw

“I didn’t like it. Even if we were allowed to stay in the Premier League, it renders the competition pointless if you don’t finish first or in the bottom three. There’d be next to no difference in finishing second or 17th because you’d be in Europe again next season regardless. It would have made our remaining games of this season utterly pointless too. From a selfish point of view, would it be nice to see Liverpool playing European giants every week or two for the whole season? Of course. But the cost of ruining the domestic league isn’t worth it for me.”

Chris Pajak – @mrbloodred

“Competition is what makes sport great without competition what have we got? It’s not sport, that’s for sure.

The money grabbing club owners should all be legged out of our game and yet we’re all complicit in this. We’ve all been doing this little dance for nearly 30 years. We want our teams to be the best, so we pay our extortionate match fees, we buy the ridiculously priced shirts and we look the other way when a shady deal is done. We hate the new money but that’s because we’re the old guard. What we should hate is the money coming into the game because make no mistake about it it’s the money that’s ruining the game. The clubs used to have the power and now the players and the associations have the power. The club’s want it back. This is what this was about.

They want to decide their destiny and if you give someone with money the power to decide their future, the first thing they’ll do is make sure they have a future. This is not fun. This is not sport. This is huge businesses satisfying their shareholders not their fans. And yet I can’t help but think that when we’ve turned the other cheek to ticket rises, furloughs and the like because they ‘seem ok’ and ‘everyone makes mistakes’ and they’ve ‘brought success’ then are we really any better than them?”

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

Luke Edwards has dropped a very worrying claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group.

Replying to a fan of the St. James’ Park faithful on Twitter, the Daily Telegraph journalist has claimed with regards to the proposed deal between Mike Ashley and the KSA consortium: “I’d have written it if I could prove it 100%. There are legal restrictions. But verbally I’ve been told something that ends this for good. But without being able to prove it is absolutely correct I can’t write it. Let’s wait and see”.

Newcastle takeover worry

If what Edwards is claiming is true, then there could be a major stumbling block in terms of trying to get the bid over the line.

The pending arbitration case between the North East club and the Premier League is likely to make a lot of things more clear, but there may be an underlining issue that stops the takeover from being revived. The journalist is clearly not certain yet, but last time we checked, the words ‘ends this for good’ don’t tend to offer much optimism.

The KSA’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) are not at the table at the moment, and they would need to see a positive result in the arbitration case and then return to negotiations to have any hope of the original deal being resurrected.

Nonetheless, the Tyneside club can still plan for the future without a takeover, as they can look to raise funds by selling the likes of under-performing Joelinton and getting players like Andy Carroll off of the wage bill.

Still, the news that Edwards has been told could well be very damaging for the Magpies’ future.

Luís Ricardo afirma: 'Estou confiante no G4'

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Sanderson links

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans have been reacting to the club’s reported interest in Wolves’ Dion Sanderson on social media.

According to Football Insider, the Eagles, along with Huddersfield Town, have joined Sheffield United in the race to sign the 21-year-old.

Sanderson is currently out on loan in the North East with Sunderland, becoming a regular under new manager Lee Johnson at the Stadium of Light in recent months.

His contract at Molineux expires in just over 12 months time, with the report claiming Sanderson could cost just £2m in the summer window.

The Englishman, who has tuned out on 22 occasions for the Eagles, is thought to be open to a move away, should his current employers decide to cash in the upcoming window.

Gers fans react to clip of Aribo strike

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been reacting to a video of Joe Aribo scoring against Progres Niederkorn at the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

The season has been a fantastic one for the Gers. Not only have they already claimed the Premiership title, they are also unbeaten both in the league and in the Europa League (Sky Sports). They have a strong chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of the latter competition after drawing 1-1 in the first leg of their round of 16 clash with Slavia Prague last week.

They did rather well in European competition last year, as well, as they managed to reach the round of 16 of the Europa League before losing to Bayer Leverkusen. Their journey kicked off with a 10-0 aggregate victory over St Joseph’s before they beat Progres Niederkorn 2-0 across two legs. In the first match, Aribo scored a lovely goal to put the Gers ahead.

Their victory over the Luxembourg outfit avenged a shock defeat to the same opponents in 2017, when Pedro Caixinha oversaw a humiliating exit in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

Aribo’s strike from their 2019 clash was shared by Rangers’ official Twitter account as part of their Goal of the Day series, and these fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the goal from Aribo below

Everton eye Wamangituka transfer

Carlo Ancelotti should urge Marcel Brands to launch a summer swoop for Everton to sign a second Richarlison-type player in VfB Stuttgart forward Silas Wamangituka.

What’s the word?

According to Eurosport, Wamangituka has caught the attention of a clutch of Premier League clubs with his dazzling efforts in the Bundesliga this season.

The 21-year-old has been the star of Stuttgart’s campaign since Die Roten returned to the German top-flight last summer, netting 11 of his side’s 44 goals while providing three assists.

Wamangituka, who is under contract at the Mercedes-Benz Arena until 2024, is considered to be one of the most exciting talents across the Bundesliga, having delivered an instant impact while tackling matches with a distinctive style of play.

His pace and finishing excellence from a wide position is thought to have Everton and Fulham on alert, along with talent spotters from some of Germany’s bigger clubs.

The DR Congo native is likened to Arsenal’s £72m forward Nicolas Pepe for the way he broke out at LOSC Lille to seal his move to the Emirates Stadium in 2019, having provided 22 goals and 11 assists in 38 Ligue 1 appearances.

Should Everton sign Wamangituka?

Ancelotti urging Everton’s Director of Football Brands to launch a pursuit to sign Wamangituka this summer could see the Dutch chief acquire a versatile dynamo, who is capable of playing on either wing as well as in behind the striker.

The £22.5m-rated speedster is able to find the back of the net on either wing, too, having struck nine goals and produced three assists from 19 games on the right-flank along with two goals in two Bundesliga outings from the left.

Fitness rarely seems an issue for the 21-year-old, either, with the energetic winger starting 21 of his 22 appearances while sitting out just one fixture to date this term.

Arsenal’s Pepe is not the only player Wamangituka has been likened to, as well, with former Gunners Head of Scouting Sven Mislintat, now Stuttgart’s Sporting Director, comparing the Paris FC product with Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

“There are some differences between them, of course, but also many, many similar things,” Mislintat told Bundesliga.com. “His father was a player, defensive midfielder, playing for the national team of Gabon, hard worker and Auba got this attitude.

“And he has learned quite a lot also from Jurgen Klopp in working defensively. If they adopt this and they are able to do this, then they will become big, big stars in football with their qualities and their mindsets. And this is what Silas did as well.”

Mislintat also describes Wamangituka as a “scoring machine”, along with being “humble, hungry for success, [and] he would like to improve his game every day.”

Wamangituka’s drive, output, style and versatility would not be too dissimilar to Richarlison if brought to Everton, offering Ancelotti two high-calibre options for either wing.

“I think he [Richarlison] cannot play centre-forward because he is really good at attacking the line and to play centre-forward, most of the time you have your back to the goal,” Ancelotti said, via quotes by the Liverpool Echo. “I think for him, better is centre-left.”

The Toffees boss has also praised his star Brazilian for his defensive contribution, noting via quotes by the Mirror: “I was not happy with him against Newcastle because I think he could work more. Against Leeds, he did fantastic defensive work and I was pleased with that performance.”

It remains to be seen how much Stuttgart would value Wamangituka at the end of the season, but Everton should certainly sound out the Bundesliga side’s position.

AND in other news, Everton are tracking a prolific 15-goal winger backed to reach another level…

Why West Brom need James McCarthy

West Brom could be about to fill a long-standing void, if latest reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, the Baggies are one of several teams eyeing up a move for Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy as the Irishman is out of contract in the summer.

The Eagles are yet to begin talks over an extension, so he could be free to leave Selhurst Park, thus putting the likes of Celtic, Burnley, West Ham, Brighton, Bournemouth and of course, Albion on high alert.

It is thought that the 30-year-old is on around £50k-per-week at Palace.

A new Brunt?

Whilst it is no secret that Sam Allardyce needs a new holding midfielder – something that McCarthy is not – he could do no wrong in finally replacing a former West Brom stalwart.

After 13 years at the club, veteran Chris Brunt left the Hawthorns in the summer and really, Slaven Bilic never replaced him.

It was the right decision to move the 36-year-old on, but someone of his influence would have certainly been needed as the Baggies are deep in a relegation battle.

Over the course of his Albion career, Brunt averaged 1.6 tackles, 1.6 key passes, 1.5 clearances, and 1.4 shots per game, via WhoScored, proving to be valuable at either end of the pitch.

McCarthy is almost a carbon copy, if not a better defensive option than the Hawthorns legend as throughout his career, the 30-year-old has averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game, via WhoScored.

By comparison, only one other current starter (Conor Gallagher) has managed more tackles per game this campaign, whilst it is only Darnell Furlong that can top his interception figures, also per WhoScored.

So the 42-cap international may play further forward than an anchorman, but evidently, he’s still a hard man to bypass in the middle, which ultimately is something Big Sam needs to find as his defence has enough pressure on their heads having leaked more goals (43) than any other Premier League side this term.

Indeed, earlier this season, McCarthy was praised for his ability to break up Manchester United’s attacks, Jermaine Jenas told Match of the Day (via Pundit Arena):

“When United players get the ball, McArthur is there on to him, and his partner in crime James McCarthy is there backing him up. They’re never that far apart. They knock you out of your rhythm. It’s James McCarthy getting the block and stopping the attack.”

The Baggies boss knows him well from his time at Everton too, once lauding him as their “shining light” whilst ex-Albion manager Roy Hodgson has also dubbed him a “class player” who “deserves an awful lot of credit.”

And just like Brunt, he’s vastly-experienced in the big time after surpassing over 260 top-flight appearances this campaign.

If Big Sam can strike a deal this window, in a similar way to that of Robert Snodgrass, he should absolutely encourage the board to do it as West Brom could finally replace Brunt and get that brute force back into their engine room.
