Big PictureOffshore series – especially bilateral – in neutral venues have traditionally not been taken all that seriously. It may not be so in the case of three one-day internationals between Pakistan and West Indies in Abu Dhabi’s swanky Sheikh Zayed Stadium. A cricket-starved Pakistan have had their share of political, financial and player-related woes and Shoaib Malik’s side are in Abu Dhabi with a brand new coach and management team, hoping for an upturn in cricketing fortunes.Pakistan have played only five ODIs against strong opposition in 2008 – four against India and one against Sri Lanka. Australia, South Africa and New Zealand refused to tour because of security concerns at various times over the year, leaving Zimbabwe and Bangladesh to pop over for five ODIs each. Pakistan duly whitewashed both, though disappointed during the Asia Cup with sterner opposition. When the Champions Trophy was shelved later in the year, and then when West Indies refused to tour, Pakistan had no option but to accede to Abu Dhabi as a venue. In the midst of these worries came personnel fiascoes. Mohammad Asif was banned earlier for testing positive again for the banned substance nandrolone during the IPL; Shoaib Akhtar has been involved in legal battles with the Pakistan Cricket Board; Mohammad Yousuf defected to the unofficial ICL; Geoff Lawson was sacked as coach and to top it off, there have been persistent reports of unease between senior players and Malik. For West Indies, the high of winning the lucrative Stanford 20/20 for 20 match against England would hopefully have come off for most in the squad. Their coach, John Dyson, thought the six-week camp ahead of the Twenty20 match “was an overkill” and the lack of preparations for the team as a whole unit might hurt them in Abu Dhabi.Winning the Scotiabank tri-series in their previous one-day assignment, against Canada and Bermuda, might not have undone the humiliation at home in the ODI series against Australia where they were thrashed 0-5. West Indies will look at the ICC Cricketer of the Year, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and in-form Chris Gayle to lead from the front.Form guide (last 5 ODIs, most recent last)Pakistan WLLWW
West Indies LLWWWWatch out forShoaib Akhtar has approached full match fitness and the management was impressed by his performances in the Pentangular Cup. David Dwyer, the team trainer, has also worked closely with Shoaib, who has played little cricket this year. And unlike a couple of other coaches, Intikhab Alam has no plans to ask him to reduce his run-up.Xavier Marshall caught the eye during the home series against Australia earlier this year, and then blasted the most sixes in an ODI against Canada in August. Marshall’s 12 sixes broke a 12-year-old record of 11 in an innings, set in 1996 by Sanath Jayasuriya and equalled six months later by Shahid Afridi. Opening the innings with Gayle, Marshall has the ability to really tee off.Umar Gul has fully recovered from the rib injury he picked up at the Asia Cup in July, taking 6-39 in his only Pentangular Cup this season. With Asif nowhere near the scene, Gul will shoulder plenty of the fast-bowling responsibility.Team newsPakistan have to decide between two specialist openers or a makeshift pair. Intikhab wants specialists but Malik prefers Kamran Akmal, who has opened in 38 ODIs and scored all of his four centuries from there, to make room for another bowling option. The bowing pretty much picks itself, with Shoaib being paired with Sohail Tanvir, followed by Umar Gul and Rao Iftikhar Anjum. Pakistan have plenty of spin options, but Shahid Afridi and Fawad Alam will get first dibs ahead of 31-year-old offspinner Saeed Ajmal.Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Younis Khan, 4 Shoaib Malik (capt), 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Fawad Alam, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Shoaib Akhtar, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Rao Iftikhar Anjum.West Indies will, as always, rely on an explosive top order to kickstart the innings. Gayle warmed up the series with smashing half-century in the Stanford final against England, while Marshall and Ramnaresh Sarwan are quick scorers. The middle order, bar Chanderpaul, is thin. Shawn Findlay and Brendan Nash have played seven ODIs between them, while Carlton Baugh was only recently reinstated to the ODI side for the tri-series in Canada. West Indies will have to decide between adding a third pace bowler or including Dave Mohammed as spinning partner to slow left-armer Nikita Miller, the leading wicket-taker during the first-class season with 42 victims . Kemar Roach, a young right-arm fast bowler, may get the nod.West Indies (probable) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Xavier Marshall, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Shawn Findlay, 6 Brendan Nash, 7 Carlton Baugh (wk), 8 Daren Powell, 9 Nikita Miller, 10 Jerome Taylor, 11 Kemar Roach.Pitch & conditionsThe Sheikh Zayed Stadium has the reputation for being a batsman’s ground, with the average runs per wicket being 29.18, scored at 5.04 an over. However, seamers and spinners have also found some extra help when the floodlights come on. It is warm in the day time, so most sides prefer having a bat.Stats & TriviaPakistan have played all five of the ODIs staged here, winning three. Their highest score is 313 against Sri Lanka in May 2007, which they defended with ease, while they also chased down 197 against India with six wickets in hand.Of the 83 wickets to fall in five ODIs at this venue, 40 have been to pace and 23 to spin.Afridi pulled out an adrenaline-fuelled special for an adoring crowd in 2007, smacking Malinga Bandara for 32 runs in an over. Afridi raised his fifty off 22 balls – remarkably, he has made five quicker ones – and that over constituted as the second-most expensive in ODI history. Malik has the most runs at the venue – 174 at 43.50, at an average of 43.50 and a strike-rate of 74.04. Quotes”We may have played less cricket but I don’t believe in such negatives. This is a very important series for us because after this we have India touring us and for that we need better rhythm.”
“This is our first time (here) and the team is eager to do well on foreign soil. We believe this could be the start of a very good away tour. Pakistan is a good cricket team and it will be a challenge for us, but we will be fighting hard against them all the way.”Gayle believes his players will do everything to improve their positions on the ICC’s rankings

Former PCB chief cautions ICC over reversing Oval Test result

Shahryar Khan, the former PCB chairman, has cautioned the ICC against overturning the result of the controversial England-Pakistan Test at The Oval

Shahryar Khan, the former PCB chairman, has cautioned the ICC against overturning the result of the controversial England-Pakistan Test at The Oval in 2006, now a draw, back to a forfeit.”The ICC will only make fun of itself and it will leave them in a very awkward position,” Shahryar told the . The Pakistan board is currently awaiting the ICC’s reaction to the MCC’s recommendation that the result of the Oval Test be reversed and awarded to England. The match was initially forfeited by Pakistan, after they refused to take the field, but the ICC changed the result to a draw at an executive board meeting in July this year. The series result was hence changed from 3-0 to 2-0 in favour of England.Following the MCC world cricket committee’s statement, ICC president David Morgan said it was a decision that he was not happy with and didn’t believe “it was appropriate to change the result.” Tony Lewis, the chairman of the MCC committee, said the reversal had set a “dangerous precedent and cricket would only be worse off for this decision”.Shahryar, who was the PCB chairman at the time of the Oval Test, however believed the decision to change the result was unanimous. “It’s not a matter that whether the changed decision was right or wrong. Maybe Morgan was not happy when the decision was changed from a forfeit to a draw at the ICC board’s meeting, but then it was a unanimous decision and it should stay.”He recommended the ICC should have a body in place to addresses such issues. “It’s better that the ICC should now form a high-profile committee that includes former Test players like Clive Lloyd and even invite representatives of MCC to address such issues once and for all. I had advised the ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed at that time [to form a committee], but it didn’t materialise.”Shahryar, who was at The Oval for the match, said the on-field umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove made a mistake in awarding the Test to England. “The umpires made a wrong decision at that time and even the referee [Mike Procter] was interested in resuming the play on the fifth day.”Pakistan were accused of ball-tampering by the umpires. Led by Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s captain then, the team staged a protest by refusing to play after tea on the fourth day. Hair and Doctrove, under the laws, ruled the match as a forfeit. Pakistan were later cleared of the ball-tampering charges but Inzamam was banned for four matches for bringing the game into disrepute.

Bowlers give Kenya the edge

Khurram Manzoor scored 123 but there was not much support from the other batsmen as Pakistan Cricket Academy conceded a first-innings lead of 95

ScorecardKhurram Manzoor, the Pakistan Cricket Academy captain, scored 123 but there was not much support from the other batsmen as the visitors conceded a first-innings lead of 95 against Kenya in Nairobi. The second day of the four-day contest was also dominated by the captains. Manzoor’s hundred followed the 170 on Saturday from his Kenyan counterpart Tikolo, who took three wickets as Pakistan succumbed against spin. The day began on a bright note for Pakistan. Kenya, resuming on 344 for 7, were all out for 372. Anwar Ali added one more wicket to his six on the first day to end with figures of 7 for 97, and Mohammad Talha bagged the final two wickets.Peter Ongondo struck early in Pakistan’s reply, removing Umar Amin and Asad Shafiq with the score on 22. Manzoor and Fawad Alam added 67 for the third wicket before Alam became the first of four wickets for left-arm spinner Hiren Varaiya. Raheel Majeed scored 33 off 43 balls in a stand of 52, but his innings was cut short by Ongondo.Tikolo and Varaiya shared the remaining wickets to fall in the innings. Wicketkeeper Naeem Anjum and Talha got starts, but failed to build a big partnership with Manzoor, who was the ninth batsman out. Varaiya took 4 for 66 off 13.5 overs while Ongondo bowled economically, taking three wickets and conceding just 29 off 12 overs.Kennedy Otieno fell for the second time to Anwar as Kenya began their second innings. The hosts closed the day at 15 for 1, leading by 110 runs.

Aston Villa: Fans react to club tweet on Leon Bailey

Aston Villa confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of Leon Bailey.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa supporters went wild at the club’s Saturday post on social media.

Villa revealed that Bailey needs to undergo a medical and sign off on personal terms before a transfer can be officially completed, with a move thought to be costing Villa £30m.

Bailey looks set to leave Leverkusen four-and-a-half years after joining from Genk for £12.15m.

The Jamaican, capable of playing anywhere across the front line, made 156 appearances for the German side, scoring 39 times and registering 26 assists.

Should a move be finalised for £30m, Bailey would become Villa’s third most expensive signing of all-time behind Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Buendia.

Villa fans react

Villa shared the news regarding Bailey with their fans on their official Twitter page. This is what these supporters had to say in reply, with one describing it as ‘great’.

Cricket pavilion torched after row

A cricket pavilion has been burnt to the ground following a confrontation between members of Hatch End Cricket Club and a mob of teenagers. The incident took place on Saturday at Shaftesbury Playing Fields near Harrow in North West London, and caused the match against Old Camdenians CC to be abandoned.”There were lots of youngsters hanging around the park,” a Hatch End player told The Harrow Observer. “They were really young – 14 or 15 – and they were drunk. They started to nick the boundary flags and we went over to them because of the disruption. It just escalated. It wasn’t a brawl, just pushing and shoving. No-one got hurt.”According to the newspaper, the incident escalated after the match had been abandoned midway through the afternoon. As the players returned to the pavilion, the youths gathered friends and even parents for a tense showdown.”Lots of people came down – 50 of them – and they came with lots of weapons: poles, sticks, logs and bricks. They came into the clubhouse causing aggravation and threw a couple of cricket balls, but didn’t hit anyone because they knew the police were coming.”It took four police officers to separate the two groups, but according to Hatch End officials, the police escorted the cricketers off the site by 7pm, but chose not to move the teenagers. Within an hour, the pavilion was on fire.”It’s the same kids because they didn’t leave the park,” said the player. “The firemen are saying the fire started from the inside so the youths must have broken in.”Graham Wild, a Hatch End CC committee member, told the newspaper: “There was a group of cricketers trying to defend the clubhouse – it was a siege mentality.”

Should Celtic sign Aaron Boupendza?

Ange Postecoglou wasn’t backed early in his Celtic reign on the transfer front but you can’t accuse the club of not working hard.

They’ve been dealt a tough hand in pre-season, with James Forrest having to isolate and a number of injuries rocking the camp.

However, in the last week or so, they have completed some shrewd moves. Liel Abada put pen to paper and scored an all-important goal in the Champions League, while Carl Starfelt has arrived as their Kristoffer Ajer replacement.

Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide were early acquisitions, while we’re still awaiting images of Kyogo Furuhashi in Celtic colours after he completed a switch.

Next on their radar could be a record-breaking swoop. Not since Odsonne Edouard signed from PSG in 2018 for £9m have they usurped such a price tag but they may have to shell out more than that to land Aaron Boupendza.

After selling Ajer for £13.5m, the finances are certainly there, and their coffers could be boosted further by the exit of Edouard. If the Frenchman does take his leave. then Postecoglou would seal his best deal yet by moving for Boupendza.

He is reportedly the Hoops’ top priority but Turkish club Hatayspor want a fee of around €12m (£10.4m) for his services.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

The following quote describes in a nutshell why they must bring him to Glasgow:

“He’s a very good footballer, a goal machine, the top scorer in the championship. And we won’t be sorry if he stays with us. If he stays, he will be top scorer in the championship again, and we’ll sell him twice as much,” said Hatayspor president Nihat Tazearslan.

Boupendza was on fire in the top flight of Turkish football last term, finding the net on 22 occasions and providing one assist.

Being compared to Kylian Mbappe, the forward has been given the nickname of a “panther”, something which illustrates his dangerous qualities and scintillating speed.

He fired a mighty 3.1 shots per game towards goal last term and completed an eye-catching 2.6 dribbles per match.

Not only did he replicate Edouard’s goal tally from 2020/21, he did so with fewer shots per match than the Frenchman. His dribble tally was also more than any other player in Celtic’s ranks.

Possessing a ruthless streak in the penalty area, he can also stroll past players with absolute ease.

It’s clear to see why Postecoglou must break the bank to acquire Boupendza’s signature this summer. He is a fabulous player and, at the age of 24, still has plenty of room to grow.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Starfelt: Celtic must swoop for 6ft1 tank who’s “one of the very best”…

Love torments wayward England – again

Martin Love today led an Australia A onslaught which demonstrated England had done nothing to solve its bowling problems

Don Woolford15-Nov-2002Martin Love today led an Australia A onslaught which demonstrated England had done nothing to solve its bowling problems.Love, who’s become a serial tormentor of the tourists, hit an unbeaten 201 as the Australians cruised to 3-353 declared on the first day of the three-day match, England’s only opportunity to find form before the second Test in Adelaide. The tourists were 1-50 in reply at stumps. After hitting an unbeaten 250 for Queensland against England a fortnight ago, Love continued to underline his status as the best top order batsman outside the Test team.Admittedly England rested two of its frontline bowlers, Andy Caddick and Ashley Giles. But it did use two of its formerly walking wounded, Steve Harmison and Andrew Flintoff, and replacement Alex Tudor. Two of the three are likely to be picked for Adelaide.Oddly Chris Silverwood, who was flown out from England this week as another replacement, was made 12th man and is presumably not in the Test frame. The pace attack’s performance left assistant coach Graham Dilley exasperated.”On a flat track you have very little margin for error,” the former England fast bowler said.”You need discipline, patience and luck and we’re nowhere near any of those.”Love agreed the English bowlers didn’t make the most of the early conditions, bowling too short and wide. However he warned that Harmison, with whom he’s played at Durham, could turn matches on his good days.Harmison was by far the quickest, but consistency was not his forte.Love said he didn’t know how close he was to a Test debut.”All I can do is keep scoring runs and putting pressure on the guys in the team,” said Love, who faced 243 balls and hit 25 fours in just 301 minutes.Acting captain Marcus Trescothick continued the English habit of sending the Australians in and, as usual, lived to regret it.In a willing opening burst on an initially lively Bellerive Oval wicket, Tudor and Harmison gave England early heart.Matthew Elliott had an unhappy return to this level when a rising Tudor delivery crunched into his right elbow on the first ball of the match. He needed stitches, but an x-ray cleared him of serious injury and he could have returned to the crease.Shortly afterwards Tudor caught Jimmy Maher’s edge and the Australia A captain was gone for six.But once the first hour was weathered, the bowling attack fell away and Love and Greg Blewett, who was not at his fluent best, put on 140.Blewett was bowled by Craig White for only 25 but England’s woes continued when 21-year-old Michael Clarke arrived.Clarke played beautifully, at times contemptuously, and will surely play for Australia one day.Love and Clarke piled on 123 in 112 minutes before the NSW batsman, having rushed to his half century with two fours off Tudor, skied a slog. The appearance of Marcus North simply lifted the scoring rate further and it was the Western Australian lefthander who provided the final fireworks. Before the declaration ended the slaughter, he rushed to 33 with an on-drive over the boundary followed by a reverse sweep for four.England lost Michael Vaughan for eight when he inside edged Brad Williams onto his stumps. But Trescothick (5) and the aggressive Mark Butcher (30) survived until stumps without serious alarms.

Leeds boss Bielsa hailed as ‘incredible’

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has described Marcelo Bielsa as ‘incredible’, following a revelation which sums up his dedication at Leeds United.

The Lowdown: Bielsa transforms Leeds

The 65-year-old has arguably been the most influential figure at Elland Road for many years, transforming the Whites’ fortunes and guiding them back into the Premier League.

Bielsa has got Leeds playing some of the most entertaining football in the club’s history and his down-to-earth nature means he is adored by supporters – he recently stopped by a local youth team for an impromptu coaching session.

The Latest: McLeish hails ‘incredible’ Argentine

It has now emerged that the Argentine hasn’t even taken a summer holiday after a gruelling season, instead overseeing upgrades being made at Thorp Arch.

Speaking to Football Insider after that news, McLeish waxed lyrical over Bielsa, lauding his all-round brilliance:

“The guy just lives and breathes football, doesn’t he? The Leeds fans adore him. It would be like losing a family member if he was to leave Leeds.

“That is why they are acquiescing to a lot of his visions for the club. A pure football genius. He’s an incredible man in terms of the nature he goes about things.

“He is certainly an awesome coach when you consider the improvement to the many teams he’s been at.”

The Verdict: Please stay, Marcelo

This story perfectly sums up Bielsa’s remarkable work ethic and obsession with football, highlighting why Leeds need him to stay on for as long as possible.

He is a truly an enchanting character, much in the way Jurgen Klopp is at Liverpool, and it will be a desperately sad day when he eventually leaves the club.

The hope is that is still a long way away, however, with a new deal potentially being signed imminently.

In other news, a pundit has revealed who he thinks would be a perfect fit at Leeds this summer. Find out who it is here.
