The hilarious (but also sad) decline of a Liverpool & England hero

It is not an exaggeration to say that Michael Owen was my childhood hero.

Perhaps this was because I was the sort of football fan growing up who watched my idols on TV rather than in the stands. If I was a full-blown Kopite, I might have preferred Robbie Fowler or Steve McManaman, but I wasn’t, I was just a boy sitting in front of a TV, mesmerised by one player and his phenomenal individual talent.

In many ways, supporters like myself stole Owen from Liverpool fans. I was part of a legion of fan-boys who adopted Owen, without the slightest consideration towards the club he played for. Owen was always appreciated by Liverpool, although he never reached the ‘God’ like status of Fowler. Unlike Fowler, Owen’s most iconic moments were in an England shirt, he was known first and foremost as an England international rather than a Liverpool striker.

After David Beckham, Owen was English football’s biggest commodity. He was a wind up monkey, a victim of his own incredible dullness and controlled by the brands that owned him. His premature genius was set free in the 1998 World Cup, he was just 18-years-old.

His rise to super stardom was something out of a video game, Owen was the FIFA avatar we have all imagined ourselves to be, although he was playing out the fantasy in real life, he was a professional footballer when the rest of us were studying for our A Levels or GCSE’s.

Sadly Owen wasn’t built to last, at 19 he ruptured his hamstring and his career would never be the same. He was still a great player, but Owen wasn’t just meant to be a great player, he was going to be the best player in the world.

Since retiring from football, Owen has become a different version of himself; maybe he has become his real self? He was a role model for the next generation of footballers; now he’s nothing more than a washed-up pro, who was once taken seriously.

Occasionally Owen will remind us of his success on the field, he will tell us that he scored for Real Madrid in El Classico, or that he won the Ballon D’Or (otherwise known as the European Player of the year, in his day). But most depressing of all is the fact that Owen needs to convince people that he was a great player.

His career decline began at Newcastle United, and since then he has become more and more insignificant. Now that he has retired, Owen is fighting to stay relevant; he has accidentally become everyone’s favourite footballing comic and his Twitter page reads something like a parody account. He’s no longer one of England’s greatest goal scorers; he’s just a bloke who’s only watched eight films in his entire life.

Like many people, I have laughed along with Owen’s befuddlements over the past few years, the man is truly hilarious, and his oblivion to it all makes it so much funnier. He is still the wind up monkey he once was, although he doesn’t work quite as well as he used to.

Occasionally Owen will forget that he’s a footballing superstar, and revert back to his true self, which is an incredibly dull man who says things like, “Christmas is underrated. Best day of the year by far.” It’s as though he’s commentating on his own life from the BT Sport commentary box.

Every Saturday lunchtime Owen unites a nation, as the keyboard warriors of English football take to Twitter to express their abhorrence to Owen’s commentary. He’s often accused for stating the obvious without a detection of irony in his voice, therefore leading people to believe that he’s genuinely stupid. For example, in commentary Owen once said, “You need people who score goals, that’s how you win games.” Yes Michael this is true, I literally cannot argue with that. In fact to paraphrase Owen once more, it’s as simple as…simple.

Owen is like an old man who we respect on the inside, but poke fun at because he’s defenceless. Maybe we degrade him because of his achievements, or maybe it’s because of his fixation with horses? Either way, no matter how much Owen embarrasses himself, it should never be forgotten just how good Owen was as a footballer.

England may never again produce a talent as raw as Michael Owen; he is a national treasure, a future knighthood recipient and one incredibly funny man. He’s not having a career decline; Owen is having a renaissance and he’ll always have his former glories to fall back on.

Joao Cancelo's history of stropping! Defender threatened to quit Man City in 2019 and was told to knuckle down in 2020 before Pep Guardiola booted him out in January ‘for the good of the team’

Joao Cancelo's time at Manchester City has been nothing short of a soap opera, before Pep Guardiola called for his departure in the January window.

Strained relationship between Cancelo and GuardiolaBook reveals the straining of the relation Cancelo asked to leave in 2019Getty WHAT HAPPENED?

In an updated version of the book, the writers revealed the turmoil in the relationship between the Portuguese full-back and the Manchester City top brass. The book revealed that Cancelo had threatened to leave the club in 2019 after having just joined the club as he lost his place in the starting lineup to Kyle Walker.

When the pandemic struck in 2020, Juanma Lillo, the assistant manager, was put in charge of trying to convince Cancelo that it was in both his and the team's best interests to put in the effort to raise his game and gain a spot on the squad. At the time, a number of players were sidelined due to injuries, so Pep agreed to give him a go at left-back at Lillo's urging. It was successful, as Cancelo excelled in his new position for two seasons, ranking among the top wing-backs in Europe.

In 2022, however, the relationship turned sour yet again after Cancelo's form hit peaks and troughs at random, causing Guardiola to drop the full-back. The relationship was severed fully when the Catalan dropped Cancelo in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Arsenal. A sullen Cancelo was visibly disengaged throughout Pep’s tactical talk which seemed to be the last straw for Pep who talked to Man City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain and CEO Ferran Soriano as a call to get rid of the Portuguese.

AdvertisementWHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

Talking to Soriano and Begiristain, the Catalan coach said: “For the good of the team, Joao [Cancelo] better be gone by the time the winter market is closed.”

Soriano talking to the writers, said: “It’s all about making the right decisions for the team as a whole. We came to this club determined to make good decisions and create a team with the right values and the right character. We had to maintain those standards.”

Cancelo left the club on loan in January of 2023, as he made a move to Bayern Munich helping them make a comeback and win the Bundesliga over Borussia Dortmund. His performances were good enough to warrant interest from La Liga champions, FC Barcelona, who were only able to sign the full-back on loan in the summer of 2023 due to their financial situation.

OnlyFans model Ali-Rose has given a graphic account of her alleged experience with Mendy, who now plays for Lorient. The 23-year-old claimed she met the left-back at an Eid party hosted by former Man City star Riyad Mahrez. She described the alleged encounter as a "very strange experience" and claims that he still messages her to this day.

She said on the Reality Check podcast: "I have no idea whose house I'm rocking up to, I got inside, his whole family is in there, Mendy is in there and they're all drunk. I was literally not dressed for a family gathering. Eventually Mendy takes me away and starts speaking to me and I am like, 'Hi nice to finally f***ing speak to you'. He's like, 'I'm really sorry this is the situation' and I'm like ,'Did you not know you were going to be at this party before you invited me down on this date'. Like, I was enjoying myself, don't get me wrong. I was drunk, I was very much party to it but it was a very strange experience."

She added: "He still messages me now to this day, saying, 'Come to France, come to Paris'. There is nothing in it for me, even if there was financial gain, I don't want it and don't need it."

Marca.comTHE GOSSIP

Mendy was cleared of one count of rape and one count of attempted rape in July 2023, six months on from being found not guilty for six counts of rape against him. The 29-year-old was released by City last summer having not played in nearly two years due to his arrest, before signing with Ligue 1 club Lorient on a two-year deal shortly after.

As the former France international – who did admit in court he had a "disrespectful" attitude to women and that it was "easy" to have sex with multiple women due to his footballer status – tries to rebuild his football career, this latest news puts his name back in the spotlight for matters off the pitch.

Ultimate Chelsea dream team – Lampard, Drogba & Terry but no Kante or Carvalho

Chelsea are one of the most successful English clubs in the 21st century, with the Roman Abramovich era truly transforming them into a continental giant. Five Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies, interspersed with multiple FA Cup wins, have only highlighted that fact.

However, Chelsea have some magical moments even before Abramovich took over. They won their first English title in 1955 and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1971 and 1998.

There have been some absolute legends who have donned the blue shirt of Chelsea over the years. While the likes of Ron Harris, Bobby Tambling, Kerry Dixon and Peter Bonetti were the darlings of Stamford Bridge in the past, players like Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, John Terry and Eden Hazard were some of the superstars who wrote themselves into the annals of Chelsea's history in the 21st century.

Safe to say, then, that Chelsea fans have quite a few heroes over the years.

Only 11, however, can take their place in GOAL’s greatest ever Chelsea team…

Getty ImagesGK: Petr Cech

Petr Cech is an absolute legend at Chelsea, having made 494 appearances for the Blues and helping them win multiple honours. However, his choice as the goalkeeper of the Ultimate Chelsea XI was not so straightforward.

It wasn't easy to ignore Peter Bonetti, who spent almost 20 years at Chelsea between 1959 and 1979. However, the sheer amount of success that Cech enjoyed at Chelsea was staggering.

The former Czech Republic international played a key role in four Premier League title-winning seasons, their shock 2012 Champions League success and a Europa League triumph. He also lifted the FA Cup four times, and claimed the Premier League Golden Glove award on three occasions.

Cech, then, is our Chelsea Dream Team No.1!

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRB: Cesar Azpilicueta

The current Chelsea captain is an automatic choice at right-back. Though Branislav Ivanovic could stake a claim, it is safe to say that Azpilicueta has earned this spot after a decade of exemplary service, featuring nearly 500 appearances in all competitions.

The Spaniard has won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two Europa League trophies. More importantly, Azpilicueta led Chelsea to victory in the 2020-21 Champions League.

A reliable defender who wore the Chelsea shirt with pride, Azpilicueta is an obvious inclusion.

Getty ImagesCB: John Terry

Captain. Leader. Legend. If there was ever a Chelsea player who fit this description, it was John Terry. This warrior of a centre-back was considered one of the greatest defenders of his generation.

A Chelsea youth product, Terry made over 700 appearances for the Blues in a trophy-laden career. A no-nonsense defender known for his strong tackles and commanding style of play, Terry was a captain who truly led by example.

The former England international was part of all of the club's five Premier League triumphs, while he also won the Champions League and the Europa League.

Getty ImagesCB: Ron Harris

The all-time appearance record for Chelsea, with 795 games, but longevity is not the only reason why Ron Harris makes our Ultimate Chelsea XI. He was the face of the club during the '60s and '70s, holding the team together with his tenacity and commitment to the cause.

The tough-tackling defender, who also played as a full-back and a defensive midfielder, led Chelsea to their first major European trophy in 1971: the Cup Winners' Cup.

Harris makes this line-up just ahead of Ricardo Carvalho, who had a very successful stint at Stamford Bridge from 2004-2010 but never quite achieved the same mythical status as the man known as 'Chopper'!

Narine's IPL hinges on Chennai retest

West Indies offspinner Sunil Narine will have to get his bowling action cleared at the ICC-accredited centre in Chennai in order for him to play for Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming IPL.BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya informed the same to Knight Riders chief executive Venky Mysore on Thursday after Mysore dashed to Kolkata for a meeting. The franchise had lodged an official protest with Dalmiya last week after Narine was asked by the BCCI to travel to Chennai despite submitting a clearance report issued by the testing centre at University of Loughborough, another ICC accredited centre, in early March.Narine was called twice in successive matches during last year’s Champions League Twenty20 in September, and had to get a clearance from one of the ICC accredited centres according to tournament rules. He subsequently went to Loughborough in early March to undergo various tests, and got a positive nod from the experts. But once the report from the Loughborough centre was submitted for review and clearance from the sub-committee dealing with corrective actions, the BCCI wrote back to Knight Riders saying Narine would have to undergo another round of tests at the Sri Ramachandra University centre, the first ICC accredited centre in the subcontinent, which opened last October. It meant the BCCI was effectively cancelling the Loughborough report.Knight Riders questioned why the BCCI would not accept the report from the Loughborough centre if the ICC accredited centres all over the world followed the same apparatus, procedures and tests, and asked why a second report was required. When they received no specific reason, the team’s management sought the intervention of Dalmiya. However, Dalmiya said that the BCCI was only going by the rule book. “I cannot do anything out of fear or favour. I cannot change a set of rules already in place for one person. What I can do is assure justice is done. That is what I told them (KKR),” Dalmiya told ESPNCricinfo. One BCCI insider said the board was not discrediting the Loughborough report, but merely making their own assessment to be entirely convinced. “It is just a safeguard,” he said. “And that is only good for a high-profile player like him. In case he gets called in the first match he plays, then it is not good for him. Not good for the team. Not good for the tournament.”He also stressed that being tested in Chennai did not mean Narine’s action would continue to be clean. “The umpires could still call him, but we just want to be doubly sure. Will we deprive our own tournament of (missing out on) star value?”The official insisted the BCCI was only following the stated policy which indicated that a bowler once called, would need to report to the Chennai centre. He said he could not understand why Knight Riders were so “apprehensive” about sending Narine to Chennai. It is reliably understood that a few months ago, the BCCI wrote to Knight Riders that Narine could go to any ICC accredited centre with a caveat saying that in the unlikely event and for valid reasons, if the committee required him to come to Chennai, he should be ready.BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya insists the board isn’t targeting any player: “I cannot do anything out of fear or favour. I cannot change a set of rules already in place for one person. What I can do is assure justice is done”•Associated Press

So the BCCI gave their approval, but it was conditional. Having followed the BCCI rules, Mysore asked Dalmiya what exactly those “valid reasons” were, and questioned the concerns of the committee. The other argument was that the BCCI had never made it mandatory for Narine to only report to the Chennai centre and nowhere else. Dalmiya did not have any explanation, and said that going forward, any bowler found with a suspect action will have to report only to the Chennai centre.Knight Riders’ anguish is understandable considering Narine remains their most coveted player, having been their Player of the Tournament in the two years they won the title, in 2012 and 2014. The franchise failed to understand how Narine, at the time the No.2 bowler in the ICC’s T20 and ODI rankings, was called despite having bowled with the same action throughout his career. The BCCI, though, insisted they were not targeting any particular player. “If someone appears once, that does not mean he is immune from being called in future. What we have told them is there will no harassment of any kind,” Dalmiya said. When the umpires called Narine for the first time during the Champions League last year, three deliveries were reported suspect – all three were the quicker balls – in Knight Riders’ final group match against Dolphins. But in the semi-finals, against Hobart Hurricanes, all 24 deliveries of Narine’s spell were called suspect by the on-field umpires.Consequently, Narine missed out of being part of the India tour and informed the WICB about handling the rehabilitation process on his own. Having played no competitive cricket since then, it came as a surprise when Narine was picked by Clive Lloyd’s selection panel in West Indies’ World Cup squad on January 11. Two weeks later, on January 25, Narine clocked his best bowling performance in List-A cricket, picking 6 for 9 to help Trinidad & Tobago to the NAGICO 50-over title with a victory against Guyana. However, two days later, Narine withdrew from the World Cup squad. He did not want to rush back, and instead focused on remodeling his action, working with a very small group of coaches including former Pakistan offspinner Saqlain Mushtaq.

Rahane has steel – Dravid

Rahul Dravid has said that beneath his understated demeanour, Ajinkya Rahane has developed “real belief” in his ability and is forcing his way to be counted among the leading batsmen in the current India middle order

Rahul Dravid has said that beneath his understated demeanour, Ajinkya Rahane has developed “real belief” in his ability and is forcing his way to be counted among the leading batsmen in the current India middle order. On four tours outside Asia, Rahane has scored Test centuries in Australia, England and New Zealand, and fallen four runs short of the mark in Durban. His average of 48.47 is the fourth-highest for Indian batsmen who have made at least 1000 runs outside their home continent, after Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.”He has now developed a real belief in his game and ability,” Dravid told the , which features a profile on the making of Rahane in its January issue.”He does not feel the need to show it off or to talk about it, which is in some ways a very good thing. But I can see there is a confidence. Like every batsman, he will have certain doubts and fears, but I have seen that over the last few years, he knows he has the game and the ability to be able to answer a lot of the questions that are going to be posed to him.”Compared to the demonstrative and aggressive mannerisms of batsmen such as Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma, Rahane is quite restrained on the field, and Dravid, who has played a mentor of sorts to Rahane at Rajasthan Royals, said that his quiet appearance only masked his “steel”.”He is a slightly less flamboyant kid than the others but I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing. Anyone who plays with him knows that he is a tough kid. He has got a steel about him.”That is what matters. The guys who play with you, selectors, captains, you can sense he has got steel. I don’t think the fact that he is a bit less flamboyant or hits fewer sixes has held him back.”He has been competing in an environment where a lot of the other guys are doing well. He has now come into his own. He is at that level where he is pushing to be recognised as one of the best in that middle order.”Amol Muzumdar, the former Mumbai captain under whom Rahane made his List A debut, said that as long as a batsman was scoring runs, it made no difference whether he kept a low profile or not. “Lots of myths float around in Indian cricketing circles,” Muzumdar said. “And one of them is this. That you have to be in somebody’s face to be recognised. But that is not true. Ultimately what is important is to score runs, no matter how you do it. Whether you are low or high profile or in somebody’s face, that is your lookout. That is how I think Ajinkya also looks at it.”Rahane could not score too many when he was finally given a Test debut against Australia in Delhi in 2013 after 16 straight games on the India bench. Scores of 7 and 1 ended in nervy dismissals to spinners and he was back on the sidelines. Pravin Amre, the Mumbai coach who has worked extensively on Rahane’s game, said that the batsman was “shattered” after the game.”That Australia Test was a cross on his name,” Amre said. “He was shattered. Legends criticised him on air. I knew that was a turning point in his life. If he was gone, he was gone. That stamp would have been there throughout his life. He could have scored a 1000 [Ranji Trophy] runs a season, twice, but that stamp would have been there – that he did not capitalise when he had the opportunity. That is how cruel this game is.”Amre suggested a change in Rahane’s backlift, even as the batsman returned to the bench for Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell Test series against West Indies. It meant that he had sat out 18 of 19 Tests, but Sulakshan Kulkarni, the former Mumbai coach, said that Rahane never showed his disappointment.”A person can get a bit relaxed about fielding when he is sitting out,” Kulkarni said. “But he would ask me for specific fielding sessions [in the Mumbai nets]. I would play the cut, and he would try and stop it between point and gully. It shows how sincere the man is. He will not sit and sulk.”Download the Cricket Monthly app for iOS and Android tablets

WICB lobbies regional players

In an attempt to gain the initiative in the standoff with its international players, WICB president Dave Cameron has sent a letter of reassurance to regional players, days before the domestic season starts.Incidentally Cameron sent out the letter, which has been seen by ESPNcricinfo, the day before the WICB’s board of directors met to discuss the crisis arising out of West Indies players’ pullout from the India tour earlier this month over a payments-structure dispute. It is clear that Cameron does not want the issue to impact the revamped first-class tournament, the Professional Cricket League (PCL), even as the international players, WICB and West Indies Players Association (WIPA) start a fresh round of negotiations to resolve the deadlock.Calling the PCL a “historic endeavour” in the two-page letter sent on October 20 to each of the 90 participating players, Cameron underlines one of the biggest benefits for the regional players is a guaranteed “stable” income including the scope for growth based on performance.A part of the structural overhaul recommended earlier this year by WICB’s director of cricket Richard Pybus, the PCL will have six franchises – Barbados, Guyana Jaguars, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago Red Force, and Windward Island Volcanoes – facing off between November 14 and March 23. Under the new system, each of the territorial boards was allowed to retain and contract 10 local players, with the rest of the region’s players going into a player draft, by which the teams completed their 15-man squads.”Dear Player, I write to convey the West Indies Cricket Board’s sincere congratulations to you on being one of the elite cricketers in the West Indies who has been specially selected for participation in the inaugural and historic WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL),” Cameron wrote.”We are especially pleased that the PCL will allow you to pursue your passion in a truly professional environment on a day-to-day basis with your franchise while providing a stable income for you and your family. The PCL is a revolutionary introduction into the West Indian cricketing landscape which the WICB anticipates will transform West Indies first-class, List A and international cricket.”According to the PCL’s salary structure, a player stands to earn an annual retainer between US $15,600 and $36,000, excluding match fees and prize money. The player will also stand to earn $13,000 for playing a full season of 10 matches in the regional four-day completion, and $4900 for seven matches in the NAGICO Super50 (the one-day competition). Thus he stands to make a potential annual income of $33,500-$53,900, depending on his seniority and performance.”Naturally there are further opportunities for your annual earnings to be even further enhanced with participation in the Caribbean Premier League, selection to the West Indies A team and West Indies team,” Cameron noted. “We look forward to you further enhancing your skills and credentials to allow you to exploit these game-changing economic opportunities for regional cricketers.”Cameron also acknowledged the concerns raised by senior players during the WIPA AGM in February. According to the minutes of the AGM, senior Guyana and West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul had complained about the unsatisfactory conditions of the grounds and pitches for domestic cricket.”We are aware of some concerns raised by your players’ association – WIPA – with regard to the standard of facilities for regional cricket and we offer our commitment to ensuring that all aspects of the PCL is truly reflective of its ‘professional’ status,” Cameron wrote. He also urged the players to show “continued professionalism and dedication with your franchise”.
