Injured Zaheer out of season

A round-up of IPL news on May 6, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-2014Zaheer to miss rest of the season
After five successive defeats this season, Mumbai Indians finally ended their streak with a five-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab on Saturday. However, the much-needed victory came at a cost, as Mumbai lost their strike bowler Zaheer Khan to a muscle strain and will have to do without the seamer’s services for the rest of the season.”Zaheer will surely be missed,” Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai captain wrote in his column for . “His injury doesn’t look too good at this stage and it’s a terrible blow for us as he was consistently getting us those crucial early breakthroughs.”Mumbai’s head coach John Wright had earlier confirmed that Zaheer had strained his left latissinus dorsi muscle, and that he would be undergoing a “thorough medical assessment”.Faulkner aces death-bowling test
Since being smashed for consecutive sixes by Darren Sammy in the last over against West Indies in the World T20 in March, James Faulkner has emerged as something of a specialist death bowler for Rajasthan Royals. After scripting a stunning Super Over-win against Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi, Faulkner once again held his nerve at the death against the same opponents in Ahmedabad to help the team to a 10-run victory.”Personally, I just try to pick the best batsman in our team, preferably the one that generally bats at the death and is used to facing yorkers, slower ones and slower bouncers,” Faulkner told when asked how he prepared for bowling at the death. “Some players don’t like the straight yorkers, while some cannot reach the wide yorkers. A lot of it comes down to luck – an edge here and there can fly to the fence. It also depends on whether you are setting a target or chasing it.”You are always going to have nerves and feel the pressure in such situations. Good players overcome them better than the ordinary ones do. You need to block the crowd out, which is not as easy as people think it is. But if you can do that and concentrate on taking in the field what you have done in the nets, it really helps.”Learning a lot from Duminy – Jadhav
Kedar Jadhav has attributed his successful transformation into a finisher for Delhi Daredevils this year to his team-mate JP Duminy. Despite having limited opportunities to score since he bats lower down the order, Jadhav, who was the highest run-getter in last season’s Ranji Trophy, has been unbeaten in his last three innings, and added 58 off just 34 balls with Duminy to propel Daredevils to a formidable 178 against Chennai Super Kings on Monday.”I am getting to learn a lot from Duminy. He is very calm during any chase or while batting first to post a total,” Jadhav told . “It is fun to bat with him. The left-right combination helps both of us while batting together. There is a lot to learn from how he approaches the game under pressure.”Laxman lauds special de Villiers innings
Not many would back a team to chase down 28 off 12 balls when Dale Steyn is bowling one of those two overs. But Royal Challengers Bangalore did just that, as AB de Villiers hit his South Africa team-mate for 24 runs in the penultimate over to hand Sunrisers Hyderabad a fourth defeat of the season, causing even the Sunrisers’ mentor VVS Laxman to laud the batsman’s 41-ball 80 as “one of the best innings” in the shortest format.”It’s very disappointing,” Laxman told . “If you see, most part of the game we were dominating but again one special innings from one special player changed everything. It’s one of the best innings you would see in T20 format because you have to be mindful that the wickets were falling at the other end.”It was not that he was having a partnership with other batsmen at the other end. I think it’s a phenomenal batting display and he took the game away from us.”

Glenn Maxwell, the Australia allrounder, will return to Hampshire for this season’s NatWest T20 Blast and may also appear in the other formats depending on the availability of South Africa paceman Kyle Abbott.Maxwell will be available to Hampshire once his IPL season with Kings XI Punjab is concluded. That tournament is scheduled to run in a window between April 9 and June 3 so he could miss Hampshire’s first four T20 matches. He previously played for the club in 2012 when Hampshire won the Friends Life t20 and he contributed 179 runs in nine matches at a strike-rate of 175.49 alongside seven wickets with his offspin.”I’m really looking forward to re-joining Hampshire after a year with Surrey in the T20s,” Maxwell said. “I’ve made a lot of close friends from the Hampshire squad and management and I look forward to being part of another successful season with them.”Director of cricket Giles White added: “It’s great to have Maxi back with us, he is an extremely popular figure here both amongst the playing group and with the supporters. His all-round qualities make him a great fit in what is shaping up to be an exciting T20 squad.”Recently, Maxwell caught the eye for his performance in Victoria’s Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales when he made 94 and 127 – the century came batting at No. 8 after Victoria had crumbled to 9 for 6, the worst start to an innings in Shield history. It remains to be seen how many of the biggest T20 names in the world the counties are able to attract for the T20 Blast given that it is spread from mid-May until early August, rather than a condensed period of four to six weeks – but Maxwell’s return follows Yorkshire’s signing of his Victoria and Australia team-mate Aaron Finch.

Another Carters ton sets up NSW victory

New South Wales opener Ryan Carters continued his strong start to the season with another century that set up victory for the Blues on the final day against Tasmania in Hobart. Chasing 255, New South Wales reached their target with only four wickets down, with Scott Henry (76 not out) steering the chase after the departure of Carters, although it was captain Peter Nevill (16 not out) who struck the winning run.It was quite a turnaround for the Blues after they conceded first-innings points by falling 90 runs short of Tasmania’s total, but by restricting the Tigers in the second innings they allowed themselves a realistic chase. New South Wales resumed on the final morning on 0 for 43, and added a further 40 runs before the opening stand was broken when Nic Maddinson was caught at mid-off from the bowling of Luke Butterworth for 43.But Carters and Henry put the result beyond doubt with a 138-run partnership that ended when Carters, on 100, was lbw to Sam Rainbird (3 for 52). It was the second first-class hundred for Carters in the past two matches – he had not made one at the start of the season – and his summer also included 94 against the touring England side for a Cricket Australia Invitational XI last month.Carters finished the match on top of New South Wales’ Sheffield Shield run tally so far this season, with 409 at 81.80. Rainbird was on a hat-trick after he bowled Ben Rohrer for a golden duck next ball after Carters was dismissed, and while he did not claim three from three balls, he did pick up the wicket of Kurtis Patterson for 4 before Henry and Nevill finished the chase.

Akram Khan has plans to run as a councillor in the upcoming BCB elections•BCB

Akram Khan, the former Bangladesh captain, has resigned from his position as chief selector, a week before his contract was to expire. The announcement came following Chittagong Divisional Sports Association’s decision to nominate him as its councillor ahead of the BCB elections, which is likely to be held in the first week of October. He has been a selector since 2007, and became the chief selector in 2011.Akram will continue in his role till the home series against New Zealand ends in early November, by a special arrangement.”I sent my resignation letter on September 18, and it is up to the BCB to accept it,” Akram told reporters. “My extended contract ends this month. But I have volunteered to work during the New Zealand series because [selector Minhazul Abedin] is performing the Hajj during this time. Otherwise, we would be down to one selector – Habibul Bashar.”We will announce the Bangladesh team within the next two days. There won’t be too many changes, as I have always maintained. The average age of our side is 25, so they can play together for another eight to ten years. So there will [be] very little change in this series, if any.”Akram, a former Bangladesh captain, will not only hold voting power as a councillor but he will contest the election for the position of a director. This is why he has to leave his position as a BCB employee as it is illegal for them to contest an election. He is one of 71 councillors from divisional and district associations, who will elect 10 BCB directors. There are 58 councillors from the Dhaka clubs who will elect 12 directors while in the third category, forty-five councillors from various organisations including education boards, BKSP, police, etc, will elect one director. The National Sports Council, the country’s regulatory board for sports, will nominate three directors from 15 councillors, which includes ten former cricketers. The cricketers are former national captains Khaled Mahmud and Gazi Ashraf Hossain, Shahedur Rahman, Dr Asaduzzaman Misha, Mohammad Ali, Ahsanullah Hasan, Hannan Sarkar, Salim Shahed, Niamur Rashid and ASM Faruque. Meanwhile, BCB president Nazmul Hassan has also picked five former captains in his quota of councillors – Shamim Kabir, Roquibul Hasan, Shafiqul Haque Heera, Faruque Ahmed and Khaled Mashud. Bangladesh’s first Test captain Naimur Rahman is also among the representatives, having claimed the councillroship from his native Manikganj district. This year’s election will have the most number of cricketers as councillors.

Preference to BPL leads to clash in BCB

Two BCB committees are at loggerheads over the 2013-14 domestic calendar after the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) was given a better time slot in place of a popular first-class competition

Mohammad Isam06-Aug-2013

The cricket operations committee has defended the scheduling of the BPL by saying that it allows the national side to prepare for the World Twenty20•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Two committees in the Bangladesh Cricket Board are at loggerheads following the scheduling of the Bangladesh Premier League in the 2013-14 domestic calendar. The BPL was given a better time slot in place of the Bangladesh Cricket League, a first-class competition, initially scheduled for December, that has now been pushed to June 2014.Former Bangladesh captain and BCB’s tournament committee chairman Naimur Rahman said that his idea to keep the two first-class tournaments together was overruled by the cricket operations committee.”I am against this domestic calendar personally as the preference of the BPL over the BCL cannot be justified,” Naimur told the Dhaka-based newspaper . “I think the BCL should have been given more preference instead of the BPL because, among the three formats, Bangladesh lacks most in Test cricket.””They [BCB’s cricket operations committee] argued that if the BPL is shifted to April, it won’t be a profitable venture. The international players will not be available because the IPL is scheduled to start at that time. Though there is logic behind it, we must try to understand where our priority lies and act accordingly,” Naimur added.Enayet Hossain Siraj, the BCB’s cricket operations committee chairman, however said that the BPL was given precedence to help prepare the Bangladesh players for the World Twenty20, which will begin in March 2014. “The BPL would be a 26-day affair, which will help our players prepare for the ICC World Twenty20,” Siraj said. The BCL was introduced last year as a first-class competition that was superior to the National Cricket League, which is played between seven divisions from the country and an additional team from Dhaka. The highest run-scorers and wicket-takers from the NCL are then selected to play for four zones in the BCL.Naimur believes that if the BCL is given more priority in the calendar, it will have an effect on domestic and international cricket in Bangladesh. He said that playing an extra first-class tournament will only benefit the Bangladesh players in Test cricket with more time spent playing four-day matches. In addition, since the BCL is a better tournament with better pay and a lot more competition, it will motivate the players to focus on the NCL, which acts as the BCL’s feeder.”When our standard of Test cricket is so low, I am of the opinion that it will be better to promote the BCL because that will allow our cricketers to develop their skill in the longer version,” Naimur said. “If we learn to promote the BCL, then the cricketers will naturally increase their focus on the NCL, because only 80 top-class performers of the NCL will participate in this franchise-based competition.”

Abdur Rehman banks on county experience

Pakistan left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman is confident of contributing to his team, even as he plays with Saeed Ajmal

Picked in the Champions Trophy squad alongside Saeed Ajmal and part-time options like Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik, Abdur Rehman may not be a certainty in Pakistan’s first-choice XI. However, the left-arm spinner who last played an ODI in September 2012, said he was optimistic about his chances of playing in England because of his county experience.”I am not concerned about being in the playing XI, as it is a decision they [coach and the captain] take after reading the conditions before the match,” Rehman said during the ongoing training camp in Abbottabad. “But spinners have a definite role in England. Every team has at least two spinners and they have as equal an opportunity to take wickets as fast bowlers. If I get a chance to play, I will definitely make a difference.”Rehman, 33, had experience of English conditions during his short stint for Somerset last summer. In four championship matches he took 27 wickets at an average of 14.18. His best performance came against Worcestershire, when he picked up nine wickets in the first innings and finished with a 14-wicket haul in the match. He also took nine wickets in three CB40 matches, with a personal best of 6 for 16 against Nottinghamshire.”I have gained plenty of experience from my county stint last year and this gives me an edge,” Rehman said. “Though I haven’t played international cricket in a long time, I have been practising regularly. I know I will play in the shadow of Saeed Ajmal, but I will try my best to contribute to the success of the team.”Rehman made headlines last year when he was banned for 12 weeks after testing positive for cannabis during the county season. He completed his ban in December, but missed the tour to India and the Champions League T20 for his side Sialkot Stallions. He was part of the squad for the tour to South Africa but was not picked for any of the Tests or ODIs.”During the South Africa tour, I didn’t play in the team as it was a decision taken by the team management and I have no hard feelings,” Rehman said. “The combination that played there was the best possible one. As far as I am concerned, I didn’t lose hope and was equally active in South Africa and here.”On the third day of the Abbottabad camp, there were a few rain interruptions but the batsmen had ample practice. Mohammad Hafeez’s back-foot punch, perhaps his favourite shot, has brought him many runs but he has generally struggled against seam bowling outside the subcontinent. On Saturday, Hafeez had an individual batting session with assistant coach Shahid Aslam and worked on facing swinging deliveries.”I am working on my normal technique,” Hafeez said. “It’s not like we are here to do something special in these five to six days, but the main objective is to acclimatise with the conditions that we will face in the next one-and-a-half months.”As players, we have to improve performances ourselves with the help of the support staff. We have a good blend of young and experienced players in the team who are capable of producing a good result.”
