Burnley have confirmed that striker Rob Harker has signed a new deal at the club, committing to the Clarets for another year.

The club’s official website confirmed that the 20-year-old has extended his contract by 12 months, keeping him on the books at Turf Moor until the end of the 2020/21 season at the earliest.

Harker, who signed for Burnley from Bury two years ago, spent the second half of last season on loan at Hartlepool in the National League, making seven appearances before the campaign was ended prematurely amid the global pandemic.

While he is yet to make a senior appearance for the Clarets, he scored seven goals for their under-23 side last term before his loan move to the northeast and could get his chance to impress in Premier League 2, with Burnley set for their inaugural campaign in that division.

The striker is among several young prospects bubbling under the surface at Turf Moor, with the likes of Mace Goodridge, Jimmy Dunne, Josh Benson, Anthony Glennon and Bobby Thomas all being included among the first team squad for Premier League matches towards the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

However, it was telling that Sean Dyche did not deploy any of those in the English top flight, suggesting that he prefers to be patient with youngsters and only give them a chance when he feels they are ready instead of throwing them straight in at the deep end.

On that evidence, it seems likely that Harker will have to wait another while before seriously being considered for the first team at Turf Moor.

However, his contract extension is a sign of the club’s faith in him, while he could use either Premier League 2 or a potential loan move to a team in the Football League to gain further experience and give himself the best chance of eventually getting the call from Dyche.

According to Fussball Transfers, Everton are one of the clubs interested in Bayern Munich star Ivan Perisic.

And as per the latest reports, Croatia international Perisic is seemingly a name they are keeping an eye on. Fussball Transfers claim that along with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham, Everton have joined the race to sign the winger, with Bayern unlikely to sign him on a permanent deal from Inter Milan.

Goal-scoring threat

Perisic is a familiar name in European football, with the Croatian having played for the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Wolfsburg, Inter and now Bayern Munich too.

And this season, despite not always starting games and missing a few matches through injury, the 6 foot 1 star has still put some very impressive numbers. In 31 games across all competitions, he has notched six goals and provided a further ten assists, and that level of goal threat from somewhere other than the centre-forward position is much needed at Everton.

The Toffees have been far too reliant on the likes of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score the bulk of their goals. The duo have netted 15 times apiece, whilst the player who ranks third in the squad for most goals scored, is Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has just three.

Perisic would add another string to Everton’s bow, with his Croatian compatriot Ivica Olica claiming he boasts “enormous quality”. And with his unique ability to be dangerous from crosses into the box – Jose Mourinho said he is “very physical” and “fantastic in the air” – there is definitely the element of a Tim Cahill about him.

Toffees fans will know all about Cahill’s heading prowess, and Perisic is in a similar mould despite playing as a winger. As per Whoscored, he has a career average of 1.6 aerial duels won per game, and has scored a total of 22 times with his head. Everton would be making a shrewd move by signing him this summer.

Japhet Tanganga – his career so far

It is pretty safe to say that Japhet Tanganga has been one of the biggest revelations for Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019/20 season and Jose Mourinho’s greatest find so far as the new coach of the London outfit.

Fans couldn’t have wished for better Tottenham news when Tanganga made his full debut under the Special One as the youngster simply kept impressing and kept performing at the absolute highest level required of him.

But let’s start at the very beginning. Tanganga made his senior debut during the team’s pre-season friendly match away to Girona back in August 2018 and then returned to the scene of the crime in 2019, with performances against Juventus, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter, impressing in all of them respectively.

His senior competitive debut, however, didn’t come until he started in Spurs’ Carabao Cup third round tie at Colchester United in September 2019, before also making his full Premier League debut in a home match against none other than Liverpool on 11 January 2020. In retrospect, now we know that was the start of something big.

But Tanganga didn’t just spring out of nowhere as he has been in Spurs’ academy since the age of ten. The now established defender advanced through the ranks, playing for U16s in 2014/15 before making the step up to U18s football in November 2014.

Not long after that, he played a total of 46 games for Spurs’ U23 side, even managing to score one goal and provide two assists under his belt in the process as well. Even though he was quite prolific and clearly important with so many appearances, his first-team games didn’t arrive before the 2019/20 campaign and Mourinho’s arrival.

Now, he can boast with a total of 11 senior performances in the ongoing season with a total of 982 minutes across all competitions, participating in all four, including a full 90-minute game in the Champions League in the defeat to RB Leipzig.

Transfer latest

Even though currently no transfer rumours indicate the club should be scared about potentially losing their young gem nor are there any Spurs news suggesting they might be willing to part with him, there is one worrying thing to note in the whole situation – there is yet a breakthrough to be reached in their current contract talks.

Some recent transfer news suggested that Tanganga has actually turned down Spurs’ initial offer back in November but that the parties are still working on finding a solution for the near future.

This could tell us that he valued greatly at the club and Daniel Levy seems to be adamant about keeping him around. That must be some of the best Spurs news to come out of the camp as of late, given the club’s injury record and the overall achievements in the latter stages of the current campaign.

If Mourinho can ensure Tanganga stays at the club, it would be a massive win for the squad as he seems to be an invaluable asset for the future of the squad.

Player profile

At the moment, Tanganga should be extremely highly rated purely because of his sheer versatility and the ability to slot into virtually all positions in Spurs’ backline. According to Transfermarkt’s database, he has played all across the defensive line as well as a right-midfielder in 2019/20 for the senior team.

When on the pitch, Tanganga’s big physical presence is usually what stands out as he has the power to shrug off defenders, tackle the ball and even more importantly, win duels against the opposition’s attackers.

We can see that in his defensive duels as Wyscout indicates he made 8.12 per 90 minutes with a 59.2% success rate in 2019/20, as well as the 7.99 recoveries he’s made in that same period. Judging by his heatmap, he does seem to be a more traditional defender who is keener on staying his ground and prioritising a compact defence over a potential venture into the opposition’s half.

But that also means that Mourinho can transform his lineup into a three-at-the-back when in possession of the ball with Tanganga acting as the third centre-back. This gives them more defensive solidity and also makes the team less susceptible to fast turnovers and transitional attacks.

Federico Fernandez has had to prove himself to his new manager but recent displays suggest he should be one of Steve Bruce’s first picks in the heart of defence.

Even with Jamaal Lascelles out injured the Magpies boss doesn’t have a shortage of options at centre-back to choose from, so he could be forgiven for leaving Fernandez out of the side to begin with.

However, it has clearly proved to be a bit of a mistake. The Argentina international has been on the losing side just once in the six league games he has played, and even that was only a ten-minute cameo at Anfield.

Newcastle’s good run of form – picking up seven points out of a possible nine – has coincided with Fernandez starting matches, and his importance was even highlighted with a goal against West Ham.

Bruce does deserve credit for his positive performances, as he has improved his game along with Paul Dummett and even Ciaran Clark, with the latter a bit of a surprise given he was debating leaving the club last summer.

Best outside the top six clubs

For a player who didn’t make his first start until late October, Fernandez has done brilliantly since coming into the side, and if he maintains his performances he should be a shoo-in to start even when Fabian Schar and Florian Lejeune return from injury.

Other than those playing for the ‘top-six’ clubs the 30-year-old has the best ratio of clearances and blocks made per minute of any centre-back in the Premier League, with a combined total of 11.6 per 90 minutes, 2.5 higher than the next player, Tyrone Mings – although he has played a lot less.

In Newcastle’s system he fulfils a vital role. Bruce’s side invite a lot of pressure on their defensive final third due to the fact they don’t retain the ball – averaging 38% possession this term – and that means they rely on players like Fernandez to clear danger.

Controlling the area in the manner he does reduces the likelihood of shots on goal, so the Magpies should concede less as a result.

His teammates also rank high in the list but the £6m man has made almost double the amount of clearances and blocks than any of them, which shows what Newcastle will be missing out on if he is not in the team.

Bruce should, therefore, repay his performances by trusting him to play even when he has a full squad at his disposal, as a failure to do so could see results take a turn for the worse.
