David Turnbull ran the show vs Ferencvaros

With Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side heading into Thursday’s Europa League clash knowing that nothing but a win would preserve their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage, it would be understandable if the 56-year-old was feeling the pressure shortly before kick-off.

However, a third-minute strike by Kyogo Furuhashi would have certainly settled any nerves on the Celtic bench, before Jota fired the Bhoys ahead once again shortly before the break after a cruel deflection off Josip Juranovic had drawn Ferencvaros level.

A spectacular through ball from Kyogo for Liel Abada saw Celtic take a 3-1 lead at the Groupama Arena midway through the second half, and while Myrto Uzuni did pull a late goal back for the hosts, the Hoops were more than worth the 3-2 victory they took back to Glasgow.

While Kyogo, Jota and Abada will steal Friday morning’s headlines as a result of their goals, the performance of David Turnbull in central midfield also deserves considerable praise.

Five key passes

With Tom Rogic being ruled out of the match due to injury, Postecoglou was presented with something of a selection headache in the middle of the park, as the pivot of Callum McGregor with Turnbull and Rogic in more advanced positions on either side of the 28-year-old has been working extremely well for Celtic in recent weeks.

However, with Nir Bitton coming into the team as the holding midfielder and McGregor joining Turnbull in a more advanced role, the trio immediately looked as if they had been playing together in their new respective roles all season.

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch, Turnbull was continuously making things happen for Celtic, with the £4.5m-rated maestro enjoying 74 touches of the ball – the third most of any player to feature in the match – completing 42 passes, completing his one attempted dribble, making five key passes and creating one big chance for his teammates.

The player who Alan Rough dubbed a “quality” talent also had two shots at the Ferencvaros goal, won eight of his 11 duels, made one interception and two tackles and drew five fouls for his side.

These returns saw the £14k-per-week midfielder receive a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 8.2, with no player from either team being awarded a better rating than the 22-year-old. It is not difficult to see why, as Turnbull ran the show for Ange Postecoglou’s side on Thursday.

A torcida te tieta?
Nada.

Estou fazendo transport agora, agachamento, começando academia devagarzinho. Estou evoluindo.

Quis matar as saudades?

Marc Guehi has been super for Palace

Crystal Palace have made a fast start under new manager Patrick Vieira, and their plethora of new arrivals over the summer have played a pivotal part in the capital club’s success.

Vieira oversaw a successful squad rebuild in his first few months at the helm. Several experienced campaigners were released from the previously ageing squad, with a host of youthful acquisitions taking their place.

Amongst the fresh faces was 21-year-old Marc Guehi. The centre-back arrived from local rivals Chelsea via an £18m move, after impressing in the Championship last term.

The youngster featured 45 times for second-tier outfit Swansea City during a season-long loan, catching the eye of several impressed onlookers and cementing his place in the England U21 setup.

And in a Three Lions “Team-mates” video last term, some of his international colleagues appeared to be impressed by the imposing defender’s physical attributes.

“Easy, Marc Guehi. He’s an absolute tank,” Stoke City goalkeeper Josef Bursik said when asked to pick the strongest player in the England U21 squad. “It’s like having a brick wall in front of you, he’s massive.”

Conor Gallagher, who also arrived at Palace from Stamford Bridge over the summer, was another supporter of Guehi’s, saying: “Definitely Marc. You can’t get round him and you can’t move him, so it’s definitely him.”

But the 6-foot gem, valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, has showcased his technical ability and tactical intelligence in south London as well as his natural power.

Guehi has played every single minute of Palace’s Premier League campaign to date, forming a formidable partnership with Joachim Andersen at the heart of defence.

As per SofaScore, Guehi has racked up a whopping 37 clearances, won 40 of his 59 duels, made 13 tackles, eight interceptions and eight blocks, highlighting his hugely effective displays for Vieira’s charges.

His standout showings have helped Palace to claim famous victories over Tottenham Hotspur and reigning champions Manchester City already in 2021/22, and the Eagles supporters will be hoping for many more memorable results as the campaign progresses.

Dan Chesters: West Ham’s next Joe Cole?

On Thursday night, David Moyes handed yet another professional debut to one of West Ham’s promising youngsters – something which has been a recurring theme since he returned for a second stint at the club.

The Irons continued their impressive form in the Europa League with another win and clean sheet, taking them way clear at the top of Group H.

Genk threatened early on in the match but the tide turned just before the break when Craig Dawson nodded home from an Aaron Cresswell delivery. The left-back provided again in the second half, this time Issa Diop heading to the net, before Jarrod Bowen wrapped things up with a fine solo strike.

With the game more or less over by the hour mark, the Scotsman made changes to his starting XI, in which young academy gem Dan Chesters came on for his maiden senior appearance.

The 19-year-old midfielder came on for Manuel Lanzini in the 89th minute, joining a whole host of names to make their debut since Moyes’ comeback, including Harrison Ashby, Emmanuel Longelo, Jamal Baptiste, Nathan Trott, Oladapo Afolayan, Aji Alese, Mipo Odubeko and Jeremy Ngakia.

Chesters is an exciting attacking midfielder, who offers pace and creativity in the final third.

West Ham’s official website describe him as ‘a livewire attacking midfielder capable of opening up the tightest of defences’. He is also capable of playing as a no.8, no.10 or out wide.

His impressive form for the U18s earned quite a lofty comparison to one of the Premier League’s very best.

“He’s a bit similar to Jack Grealish, claimed ex-Hammers midfielder Jack Collison to The Athletic.

“He takes people on and he’s lovely on the ball; really nice to watch. He’s one of the most exciting kids to watch in terms of what he can do when the ball’s at his feet.”

Meanwhile, Moyes waxed lyrical about his potential after the game. He told reporters, via football.london: “He has speed, he has trained well with the first team last week, when we were in the international break and he’d been quite impressive.

“We were a little bit short of attacking players today so it gave us a chance to get a couple of young players on the bench. Dan has been doing well and when he came on he showed his endeavour to stop them a couple of times.”

Perhaps he could go on to become the next Joe Cole at the London Stadium. His versatility and skillset certainly provide clues into the two having plenty of similarities.

With the Irons still in every domestic cup competition, we should expect to see Chesters’ name on the teamsheet more often as Moyes looks to deal with a congested workload over the coming weeks and months.

The 58-year-old may have just discovered the club’s next Cole.

Loris Karius linked with January exit

So far this season, Liverpool have managed to win six and draw four of their opening 10 Premier League games of their campaign as well as remaining unbeaten in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

With the upcoming January transfer window on the horizon, it seems as though the club have plans to get rid of one of their players that has played no part in their current season so far.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by The Mirror that Liverpool will let goalkeeper Loris Karius will leave the club on a free transfer in January.

Karius, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £65k-per-week according to Salary Sport, has not made an appearance for the Reds since the 2018 Champions League final where he made two costly errors that led to Liverpool losing the match by a scoreline of 3-1 to Real Madrid.

That says to us that he has been a sizeable flop in Merseyside and has arguably been stealing a living at the club by picking up wages without playing since.

Following his howler in a major European final, the shot-stopper has had loan spells with Turkish club Besiktas and German club Union Berlin.

Liverpool signed the 28-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.8m according to Transfermarkt, back in the 2016 summer transfer window from FSV Mainz for a reported fee of £4.7m.

Karius, who has been described as “stagnant” by former Besiktas manager Senol Gunes, then went on to make 49 appearances for Klopp’s side including his calamitous appearance against Real Madrid in arguably the biggest game of his Liverpool career, keeping 22 clean sheets in the process.

We feel that if Liverpool and Klopp have an opportunity to get Karius out of the club on a permanent basis in the upcoming transfer window, they should definitely look to do so they can get his salary off their wage bill and so he can get on with his own career.

Although, with his current contract at the Merseyside club set to expire in the summer anyway, we feel that even if they don’t manage to get rid of him in January, they won’t have to wait too long for Karius to leave beyond that.

Liverpool fans bemoan Thiago injury news

A number of Liverpool supporters have bemoaned an injury update regarding Thiago, with the midfielder set to miss this week’s two matches.

The Reds enjoyed another productive weekend of Premier League action, winning 3-0 at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita.

An otherwise positive afternoon was ruined slightly by Thiago’s injury, with the Spaniard limping off with a calf issue in the second half.

It is the latest fitness setback for Liverpool, who have already lost Harvey Elliott to a dislocated ankle injury suffered at Leeds United earlier this month.

On Monday, the club’s official Twitter account and website confirmed that Thiago would miss Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Norwich City, as well as the trip to Brentford in the league on Saturday.

Pundit rues Rangers star’s Jack’s absence

Ryan Jack’s continued injury absence for Rangers is a big problem for the defensive solidity of the team, according to former Gers and Scotland right-back Alan Hutton.

The Lowdown: Jack still out injured

Steven Gerrard’s side have made an up-and-down start to their season, topping the Scottish Premiership table but not always convincing in the competition, as well as being knocked out of the Champions League and losing to Lyon in the Europa League.

Rangers have been without Jack since back in February, with the midfielder still working his way back from a persistent calf problem.

Gary McAllister has confirmed that the 29-year-old is ‘still missing and working hard to get back to full fitness’ currently, as he looks to return sooner rather than later.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

The Latest: Pundit bemoans absence

Speaking to Football Insider after McAllister’s 11-word update, Hutton bemoaned the fact that Jack is still unavailable, claiming the hole in front of the defence has become a big problem:

“The main thing from last year, for me, is Ryan Jack’s missing. I think he’s a huge loss. If you watch the game on Sunday (v Motherwell), Tavernier and Barisic are high up the pitch and Kevin van Veen picks up the ball in behind Tavernier.

“In those kind of spaces, Ryan Jack fills them last season. He goes back into position and covers for the likes of Tavernier. That didn’t happen.

“There was a gap in behind, you need to show him down the line which he wasn’t. He was shown infield which makes Connor Goldson come right out his comfort zone into a wide area.

“Jack Simpson is slow to recognise where the danger is and move across. He can’t cover Goldson who has went out wide. It’s just a kind of mistake after mistake.

“You’re chasing your tail a little bit to try and get a block in. These are the things that seem to be rearing their ugly head game after game.

“It’s simple things but if every single player is making just a little mistake it creates a bigger mistake. From the outside looking in, Ryan Jack is a huge loss.

“He’s very good defensively, he can sniff out danger, can close down spaces really well. They need him back to try and get back into that defensive shape and really help out the team.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-4/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Vital he returns soon

Hutton is correct in his assessment, with Jack’s all-round game so effective for Rangers last season, with 16 league starts coming his way as Gerrard’s men clinched title glory.

The hope is that he returns in the near future, adding stability to the Gers’ midfield and bringing more consistency to the team, in terms of both performances and results.

An average of 1.1 tackles and interceptions per game apiece in the league in 2020/21 proved to be effective and that can again be the case upon his return.

Yuvraj cleared of dissent charge

The match referee felt Yuvraj Singh’s reaction at being adjudged lbw was more disappointment than dissent © AFP

Yuvraj Singh has been cleared of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct by the match referee Chris Broad at a hearing after the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo.Yuvraj had been charged under Level 1.3 of the code, which refers to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”. He had been adjudged lbw off Nuwan Kulasekara when on 66; the ball was going on to hit the stumps but Yuvraj had got a big inside edge onto the pads which the umpire had failed to spot. He waited at the crease for a few seconds on receiving the decision, before trudging off.The incident was reported by on-field umpires Brian Jerling and Gamini Silva, as well as third umpire Kumar Dharmasena. “After reviewing video evidence of the incident, I am of the opinion that there was no conclusive evidence that Yuvraj showed dissent at the decision,” Broad said. “He did stay at the crease but the delay in departing was not excessive and I felt he showed a level of disappointment rather than dissent.”Besides Yuvraj and the three umpires, India coach Gary Kirsten and team manager Prakash Dixit were also present at the hearing.

Rattled Guyana make sweeping changes

Ronaldo could be ruled out of Newcastle clash

Manchester United have suffered a potential setback ahead of their Premier League clash with Newcastle United after it was revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo may not be available to play.

What’s the word?

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner made a dramatic return to his former club in the closing stages of the summer transfer window after flirting with the prospect of joining United’s local rivals Manchester City.

After returning from international duty early due to a yellow card picked up against the Republic of Ireland which saw Ronaldo suspended for his nation’s subsequent World Cup qualifier; the 36-year-old was expected to make his second Red Devils debut over the weekend.

However, according to The Sun, the United fans may have to wait until Tuesday to catch a glimpse of their returning hero as he will have only had one day’s training with his teammates after having to isolate for five days due to Covid regulations.

Solskjaer will be absolutely gutted

The Old Trafford outfit may have picked up a very respectable seven points from a possible nine in the opening weeks of the new Premier League campaign, but unconvincing performances against Southampton and Wolves have left a lot of work to be done.

Therefore, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be absolutely gutted that he may not be able to call upon Ronaldo’s services when the Magpies come to visit on Saturday afternoon.

It’s claimed that after the Norwegian tactician gave fellow summer signing Raphael Varane two weeks to settle into his new surroundings, it’s unlikely that Ronaldo will be thrown into the starting XI after such a short time to adjust.

United’s relatively low-key Champions League group stage clash against BSC Young Boys in midweek has instead been outlined as the date when the Portuguese legend may be seen turning out for the 20-time English champions once again, something everyone associated with the club will be eagerly anticipating.

And, in other news…Murtough made his first MUFC error over £27m-rated “complete” gem, Ole will be gutted
