Young Windies have no choice but to move on from Shiv

Daniel Brettig in Dominica01-Jun-2015Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s absence from the West Indies Test squad in Dominica could be felt even before arriving on the island. An in-flight magazine article discussing this year’s Caribbean Tests was emblazoned with an image of none other than the 40-year-old Guyanese, as though he was the one item of furniture the editor could be sure of lasting through the edition’s April to June time span. But much to the shock of many, Chanderpaul was unable to go the distance, jettisoned by the convenor of selectors Clive Lloyd and the coach Phil Simmons ahead of the Australia series. Their call sparked numerous spot fires of discontent, none brighter than that lit by Brian Lara, who spoke not in terms of averages and statistics but of respect and history.Caught in the middle of all this is the West Indies team now compelled to go on without Chanderpaul. As a young team they will miss his experience and knowledge, and there is a sense among the players that they would have preferred a less messy conclusion to arguably the most dogged of all Caribbean cricket careers. The articulate Jason Holder tried to walk this line at the team’s first Windsor Park training session, conceding that events had not gone unnoticed by the team but resolving not to let it distract beyond a reasonable level of regret.”The exclusion of Shiv has caused a lot of talk,” Holder said, without specifying whether that talk had taken place within or away from the West Indies dressing room. “That’s beyond me at this present time, my focus right now is on cricket. It’s quite important we put cricket first and try to perform well against Australia.”Chanderpaul’s omission has cast something of a shadow over a team that was otherwise most satisfied to have drawn the recent series against England, a result that placed Australia’s next two opponents closer together than the schedule – a terrible two Tests for West Indies, a gluttonous five for England – would indicate. Holder suggested that the hosts were trying to keep their eyes on progress rather than pettiness.”We’ve taken a lot from it,” Holder said. “Obviously we did pretty well to come back in the series. We drew the series and we’re just looking to keep that momentum going in this series. We did a lot of good things in that last series and we’re just looking to continue on in that rich vein and compete very well in that Test.”Australia are ranked No. 2 in the world and that says a lot. We’re currently down at eight and we need to work our way up. We have to give them the respect they’re due. Obviously we’re coming to compete and win this series. We’re coming in quite hard at them. Looking to be aggressive and at least continue the rich vein of form we had in the England series.”There is another reason for the young team personified by Holder to look as far forward as possible without too much rancour over Chanderpaul. It is well known that Simmons has re-opened lines of communication with the region’s bevy of IPL players, meaning the West Indies team may soon be as competitively stacked for places in the Test XI as at any time since the first Indian Twenty20 tournament in 2008.The likes of Kraigg Brathwaite, Veerasammy Permaul and Holder himself may soon be competing for places with Lendl Simmons, Sunil Narine and Dwayne Bravo – notably for positions on the tour to Australia later this year – meaning that every Test match from here on in must be both savoured and exploited.”He’s been doing a very good job so far,” Holder said of Phil Simmons. “A few guys have bought into what he’s brought. Hopefully going into the future we’ll have some very good times. We’re taking it day by day and just trying to put in as much hard work as possible to this important series.”This is actually my first time in Dominica so I’m really looking forward to it. Heard a lot of things before and obviously seeing the last Test match Australia played against West Indies here. Hopefully it’s a little better than last time in terms of the pitch and we get a good game.”

Birrell wary of 'angry' Ireland

Saving the rhino, buying fairtrade coffee, recycling. We are attracted to these socially conscious ideas because we know they will make for a better, stronger community in future. That is also why cricket fans are fighting for Associate inclusion in the World Cup, but long before the latest campaign became fashionable there were plenty who knew the value of openness and one of them will be reunited with his former charges in Canberra.Adrian Birrell, South Africa’s assistant coach was in charge of Ireland from 2002 to 2007, when he oversaw their headline grabbing run at the Caribbean tournament, and believes Ireland have earned the right to play more regularly.””It’s definitely not fair. How many one-off games do they have? Not many. Between World Cups, they don’t play Full Member countries often. They need to play more,” Birrell said. “But we play a lot. It’s a full schedule. Can we play more? It’s quite tricky.”That’s why Birrell believes Ireland always have a point to prove when they play a World Cup game, no matter where they are positioned in the group or how other results have gone. “If you look at their record, they’ve continued to knock down the door and they keep on getting shut out. So they are angry and I understand that. That’s a driving factor and something which makes them play even harder to prove the Full Member teams wrong.”So South Africa need to be careful and Birrell has already identified Ireland’s batting line-up as the major threat. “They bat deep and they know how to chase targets. Four out of the top 10 World Cup chases are Ireland chases, three of them over 300 and two of them against Full Member teams. We’re fully aware of what they can do. I’m probably more aware than most, so we’ll be prepared.”South Africa will approach Ireland as they have been done every other team at this World Cup – with circumspection initially and acceleration later on. “It’s a matter of us coming in and making sure we have a solid start,” Birrell said. “If we play a structured start like we did against West Indies, we should be okay.”Birrell had coached Ireland to wins over Pakistan and Bangladesh, and a tie with Zimbabwe in 2007. He has seen them beat England in 2011 and West Indies this time. Although he would not want South Africa to be counted among that category, he does take some pride in Ireland’s progress.”When I started, there were probably one or two professionals,” Birrell said. “The rest were club players not earning their living from cricket. But since around 2005, a lot of their players have been county players, playing professionally. What I am surprised about is how much progress there has been in the administration and coaching structures. They’ve made great strides in looking after their grassroots and club cricket and making sure that the future Irish players will continue to come through.”Although the ICC have reduced the timescale for players to return to an Associate country if they opt to play Test cricket to two years, Birrell believes more could be done.”It’s difficult for them – they continue losing their players to England. Look at Boyd Rankin, who played a couple of matches and now doesn’t play in a World Cup for either Ireland or England when he should be playing for Ireland. Because he’s played a couple of matches for England, it discounts him [unless he opts to re-qualify]. That’s hurtful. Maybe there are others to follow, others who are picked for England.”But he acknowledged that Ireland have forged their own identity which has so far allowed them to stay vibrant as cricketing entity. “They’ve got a strong culture, the play an attractive brand of cricket and they’ve got a number of good players. They punch above their weight.”

Abahani end first phase in first place

A round-up of the Dhaka Premier Division matches played on December 15, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Dec-2014Abahani displaced Prime Bank Cricket Clubat the top of the points table at the end of the first phase, after their 33-run win in Fatullah. The other four teams to have qualified for the Super League are Kalabagan Cricket Academy, Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club, Legends of Rupganj and Mohammedan Sporting Club. The encounter of the top two teams in the table turned out to be a low-scoring affair. Abahani batted first and made 169 in 41.1 overs. Opener Abdul Mazid held one end with a steady 58 off 102 balls, and was the eighth batsman out. His only support came from Hamilton Masakadza (33) and captain Ziaur Rahman (30).Taskin Ahmed and Farhad Reza took three wickets each, giving Prime Bank the advantage going into the break. But they squandered that during their chase, with only Mahmudullah (51) standing firm as they were bowled out for 136 in 39.2 overs. Saqlain Sajib and Al-Amin took three wickets each.Old DOHS Sports Club bowed out with yet another big defeat, this time against Brothers Union, who crushed them by 93 runs in Mirpur.Batting first, Brothers were bowled out for 195 in 49.4 overs. This was only the third time this season that Old DOHS had bowled out their opponents. Legspinner Raihanuddin took four wickets while seamer Abu Jayed picked up three. But Old DOHS’ batting remained in the mire, as they were bowled out for 102 in 36.3 overs, their lowest score of the campaign. Mohammad Shahzada took three wickets, and Brothers ended their season with five wins.Victoria Sporting Club beat Kalabagan Cricket Academy by 48 runs to finish seventh in the league table, missing out narrowly on the second phase.Batting first, they made 237 for 6 in the fog-shortened game that was reduced to 47 overs a side. Marshall Ayub scored his second fifty of the season while Enamul Haque blasted 44 off 25 balls. In reply, KCA were bowled out for 189 in 44 overs. Pace bowlers Kamrul Islam Rabbi and Abu Haider took three wickets each while Suhrawadi Shuvo took two wickets. The league committee, CCDM, hasn’t announced the Super League schedule yet. Cook confident over Prior fitness

Jos Buttler has been called into England’s squad for the first Investec Test as cover for Matt Prior who reported some mild tightness in his right thigh

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jul-2014Alastair Cook is confident Matt Prior will be fit to take his place in the first Investec Test against India after reporting “mild tightness” in his right thigh which led to Jos Buttler being called up as cover on Tuesday.Prior was recalled to the Test side for the series against Sri Lanka having been dropped following the third Test against Australia in Perth. He made 86 in the first innings at Lord’s but endured a difficult match with the gloves at Headingley.”We’re 99% sure that he’ll be fine but we’ll have a little check in the morning just to make sure,” Cook said. “But all things at the moment are looking good.”Prior spent the first part of the season battling his ongoing Achilles injury which meant his recall was uncertain until he managed to get through a Championship match for Sussex shortly before the first Test against Sri Lanka. He underwent a fitness Test on Tuesday where he was seen diving around with the gloves on.Fitness test: Matt Prior flings himself around•Getty Images

Buttler is uncapped at Test level but put pressure on Prior for the wicketkeeper’s spot before the series against Sri Lanka following his impressive one-day performances which included 121 off 74 balls at Lord’s.However, both the player himself and the England management followed the same line in saying he needed more time in first-class cricket to work on his red-ball game. He has had a solid Championship season for Lancashire with 491 runs at 40.91 included one hundred and four fifties. At the weekend, Buttler said he was comfortable with his batting but believed his wicketkeeping still needed refining.”The move to Lancashire has been going okay for me and given me the opportunity to develop my wicketkeeping a bit faster than before. But I have to be realistic. It is my first season keeping as a first choice keeper in red ball cricket and I have to remember that and not get frustrated that I’m not quite doing it as well as I would like to yet.”I’m probably batting as well as I have in the Championship. I am a bit older and more experienced, I have matured as a person over the winter and it is going really well. I’m starting to learn my game a bit better but there is plenty of room for improvement.”

Rashid for England? A little Bird says so

ScorecardMarcus Trescothick’s wicket is still highly prized, as the bowler, Ryan Sidebottom indicates•Getty Images

It is five years since Adil Rashid last played for England, not in the five day game, as was predicted for him, but in instant cricket as well as in a drinks carrying role that was supposed to equate with gathering experience. No less a luminary than Dickie Bird is now predicting a resumption of his international career, and he made the ideal start by reaching a century against a county whose bowlers he has always relished facing.Three of Rashid’s first-class centuries have come against Somerset. Having made 84 overnight, he progressed to three figures with 17 fours off 167 balls without undue alarm. If anything, the pitch was easier to bat on than on the first day, emphasising the old adage that if wickets are not taken in the first hour of the match at Taunton, they might never be taken at all. Yorkshire will have been disappointed not to have finished with a larger total than 450, having resumed on 342 for five.Craig Overton, who had Rashid caught at the wicket and also dismissed the other overnight batsman, Andrew Hodd, well taken by Marcus Trescothick two handed above his head, could, and perhaps should, have been given the new ball ahead of Alfonso Thomas and Lewis Gregory. He and his twin brother, Jamie, who has not been selected for this match, very much represent the future for a county in transition.Hodd had reached a half century with ten fours off 81 balls and Liam Plunkett made useful runs besides. Two of the last three wickets were taken by Johann Myburgh, who finds himself the sole spinner in Somerset’s side – doubtless somewhat to his surprise. It is rather stating the obvious that it is hard to envisage him bowling out opponents this summer, even when the pitches are drier and firmer.Any remaining life in this pitch would be needed to be extracted by Ryan Sidebottom with the new ball when Somerset’s innings began. Marcus Trescothick began by taking two fours off his opening over and followed this with a further four, leg glanced, when he made to play a similar shot at the next ball, or at any rate close the face of the bat.Late movement across him resulted in the loss of his off stump. On the roof of the Old Pavilion, Jason Gillespie, Yorkshire’s coach, was thoroughly animated. So was Sidebottom. Whatever ghis form last season might indicate, this remains a wicket that is highly prized.Chris Jones, who played watchfully off the back foot in compiling a half century off 103 balls and, in making 75, his highest championship score. At the other end, Nick Compton, seeking some decent early season notches in an attempt to regain his England place – no-one can have worked harder towards this end in the winter, chiefly in the indoor school at Lord’s with Neil Burns, his mentor – fell back on accumulation. He did not find the boundary until the 86th ball of his innings, and had made 32 in all when Plunkett bowled him with what looked to be a good, honest straight delivery. Jones went before the close, by when Rashid had had a bowl. Modestly, he said that he feels he needs “another season or two with both bat and ball” of progression in order to come into selection for international cricket once again.

T20 helps Northamptonshire post profit

Northamptonshire’s Twenty20 success last season has helped them post a profit of £14,700

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Feb-2014Northamptonshire’s Twenty20 success last season has helped them post a profit of £14,700.Gate receipts came to just under £100,000 and were given a lift by the club hosting a home quarter-final in the Friends Life t20 which they ultimately went onto win.The bottom line was also boosted by non-cricket activities, particularly a concert by Madness which attracted 12,000 people to Wantage Road and it is the type of event the club want to stage again in the future. On the downside, membership income was lower by nearly £15,000 but Northamptonshire are far from the only club to witness that and it is emerging as a trend around the counties.David Smith, the chief executive, said: “The club like so many non-Test match clubs is facing significant financial challenges over the next few years, [but] 2014 promises to offer strong commercial opportunities with the new NatWest T20 Blast schedule looking more favourable with five Friday night home fixtures.”Our biggest ongoing challenge is to engage more local businesses in supporting the cricket club. I am very hopeful that given the on field success of last season that we can encourage people to support their local cricket club, in our re-furbished dining areas and corporate boxes.”Despite their Twenty20 success none of Northamptonshire’s squad found a place in the full England side although David Willey would have been very close if not for injury. However, Ben Duckett was a key part of the Under-19 side that reached the semi-final of the World Cup in the UAE.”We will continue with our policy of developing a core group of home-grown players, with a sense of who and what they represent, alongside good senior role model cricketers, with a quality overseas player, this we still believe, is the best way to bring success to the cricket club,” Smith said.”Both Olly Stone and Ben Duckett played and captained England Under-19’s during 2013 and David Willey played for the England Lions as well as being included in the England Emerging Players Programme. Add to that the contribution of Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar both developed through our academy system and the club can point to a very successful player pathway.”2014 in Division One will no doubt be challenging, we will be playing against some of the best teams and at some of the best grounds in the country, but if we avoid injuries to players and we perform at the top of our game we are capable of being competitive against any team in the country in any competition.”

SLC asks Ford to reconsider decision

In a meeting with Graham Ford on Friday, Sri Lanka Cricket has asked the team coach to reconsider his decision to not renew his contract with the team, which expires in January

Andrew Fidel Fernando13-Sep-2013Sri Lanka Cricket has asked coach Graham Ford to reconsider his decision not to renew his contract with the team. The lure of a job with Surrey does not feature in Ford’s request to end his tenure as the coach, SLC heard in the meeting, in which it hoped to convince him to stay.”Surrey had approached him, but they haven’t offered him a job,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva said. “What he cited to us was that he had family commitments, and that’s why he was thinking about leaving. We talked to him and gave him a few options regarding his family, and he will consider those with his family and get back to us next week.”Earlier in the week, Ford told the board he would finish with the team when his contract would expire in January, and he had been linked to the vacant coaching position at Surrey, which is expected to be filled over the English winter. Ford said in August that he had been informally approached by Surrey’s CEO regarding the position, but that he would not consider it until his contractual obligations with Sri Lanka were fulfilled.SLC has said it was pleased with the team’s progress under Ford, but if he abides by his decision to leave in January, Sri Lanka’s tour in the UAE will be his last assignment with Sri Lanka.Sri Lanka won their first Test series in almost three years, against Pakistan, and progressed to the final of the World Twenty20 in 2012 during Ford’s tenure, but were also whitewashed 3-0 in a Test series in Australia.

Australia to tour India for seven ODIs, one T20

Australia will tour India to play seven ODIs and a Twenty20 International in October and November. The limited-overs series will begin with the T20 in Rajkot on October 10 followed by the ODIs, which will all be day-night matches, the last of them to be played in Bangalore on November 2.The other matches will be at Pune, where the new stadium will make its ODI “debut”, Jaipur, Mohali, Ranchi, Cuttack and Nagpur.Australia had toured India for a four-Test series in March this year, which they lost 4-0. They last visited India for a seven-match ODI series in October-November 2009, when they won 4-2 with the last match washed out in Mumbai.

Schedule for limited-overs series

  • T20I – October 10, Rajkot

  • 1st ODI – October 13, Pune

After the Ashes in England, Australia play a five-match ODI series till September 13. India, on the other hand, will have slightly more time as their ODI series against Zimbabwe ends on August 3.However, the Champions League T20 is scheduled for September 17 to October 6, leaving only a three-day gap between the final and the T20 scheduled on October 10.Australia will then host the other leg of the Ashes starting November 21 in Brisbane.
