Chelsea: Jurgen Klopp mentions Frank Lampard spending spree in recent interview

Chelsea are miles ahead of their Premier League rivals in terms of new recruits this window and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

After securing the signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, with others including Thiago Silva due to put pen to paper, the Blues are off to a flying start this window. Their most recent coup involved a £50million move for Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, who joins the West Londoners on a five-year deal (via Daily Express).

Although, Chelsea are out on their own as they continue to line up targets for their lavish spending. Recently crowned champions of England Liverpool have made just one new signing, Kostas Tsimikas is currently their only senior recruit so far, joining from Olympiakos for a fee of £11.7million (via BBC Sport).

During an interview with Servus TV, Klopp said: “Due to Covid-19 you have to think five times about what you can and what you can’t do. We always have to pay attention to the financial aspect. We don’t know how much money will come in,” (via Metro).

Indeed, the financial impact of coronavirus has impacted teams across the world, including some of the most successful Premier League clubs. Frank Lampard’s side endured a two-window transfer ban though, which has helped them accumulate funds to flaunt this summer.

“Nobody knows but it seems like some other teams have a more positive outlook on the future,” Klopp continued. “If you look at Chelsea for example [laughs].

“But I am very happy with my team right now. If something transfer related will happen we have to see.”

Chelsea are also nearing the completion of their pursuit of Kai Havertz, who looks set to join the club on a potentially record breaking deal. They have also been linked to an audacious move for Lionel Messi, who has a £623 million release clause.

Leeds could make Augustin-like mistake with Arthur Cabral

According to Globo Esporte, Leeds United have submitted a bid for Basel striker Arthur Cabral.

What’s the word?

With Jean-Kevin Augustin’s long-term future at the club still uncertain as the Whites try to avoid signing the Frenchman on a permanent basis this summer, it’s no surprise to see Marcelo Bielsa’s side being linked with a move for a new striker.

Is it Haaland Snr or David Hopkins? Your Leeds knowledge will be put to the test with this quiz…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Brazilian publication Globo Esporte claim that Leeds have offered €15m (£14m) upfront plus €3m (£2.7m) in bonuses. The report adds that despite Basel trying to hold out for €20m (£18.1m), there is optimism that a deal can be struck between the two sides, with Cabral said to be excited at the prospect of playing in the Premier League next season.

And perhaps in a boost to Leeds’ chances of signing him, it’s said the negotiations are being handled by agent Paulo Pitombeira, who has a previous relationship with Bielsa, having orchestrated Thiago Mendes’ move to Lille when the Argentine was manager.

Another Augustin disaster

Whilst Cabral has performed well for Basel – he scored 18 goals in 39 games in the 2019/2020 campaign – the 22-year-old just isn’t the kind of proven Premier League option that Leeds could desperately do with.

If fans of the Elland Road side haven’t been too impressed with Patrick Bamford, then they would shudder at the thought that their starting number nine has netted just once in 27 previous top-flight games.

Augustin’s signing back in January was no doubt done with the thought of providing Bamford with some serious competition, but at just 23, and arriving from abroad, it was no surprise that he failed to hit the ground running. In the end, he played just three times in the Championship and didn’t score at all.

Cabral is a year younger than the Frenchman, and comes from a far less high-profile league than Ligue 1. A move for the Basel ace is very much a gamble by Victor Orta, and it’s one that he perhaps shouldn’t take. As Leeds look to survive in their first season back in the Premier League, players with previous top-flight experience is just what’s needed. Not another young, unproven and wholly untested player.

Glasgow Rangers: Gers target Niklas Dorsch suffers heartbreak in Bundesliga play-off

Glasgow Rangers’ hopes of signing Niklas Dorsch may have received a huge boost on Monday night.

Dorsch’s side Heidenheim were playing in the relegation play-off against Werder Bremen after having finishing third in the 2. Bundesliga – that saw them play the top tier’s 16th-placed side in a two-legged tie. The first leg ended 0-0 in Bremen and, after a 2-2 draw in the second clash, Werder secured their status in the top flight on away goals.

That, of course, will be a crushing blow to the Heidenheim players and all those associated with the club, but it could be a big boost for the Gers. The Ibrox outfit have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old, and now he has not been promoted to the Bundesliga, he could well be more open to the idea of moving to the top flight of Scottish football – irregardless of the overall competitiveness, the Gers are still a club with worldwide prestige and they also compete in European competition.

Currently valued at £4.05m by Transfermarkt, Dorsch is a former Bayern Munich starlet who has played an important part in Heidenheim’s run this term – he registered five assists in 32 matches from the middle of the park. Should the Gers be able to sign him, he would be an impressive addition to their side – now, their chances of completing a deal may have been given a boost.

Man Utd fans rave about Bruno Fernandes’ masterclass

If there was an award for most valuable signing of the season, then Manchester United magician Bruno Fernandes is surely near the top of the contenders list.

The Portugal international may have only arrived back in the January transfer window, but his impact on this Red Devils team has been nothing short of remarkable.

In 14 total games for the club across all competitions, he has scored seven times and provided a further six assists, with United remaining unbeaten in every single fixture he has been involved in.

And against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, he was once again in imperious form, scoring once, setting up two others and also providing an impressive five key passes. After seeing his performance in the 5-2 thrashing of the Cherries, United fans flooded to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of fans compared Fernandes to United legend Eric Cantona, and it’s certainly not something that feels too exaggerated – the Portuguese ace reached ten goal involvements in just nine Premier League games on Saturday, meaning he is the joint-quickest to do so for the club alongside Cantona himself and Robin van Persie.

The Cantona comparison says it all really.

Can you name every one of United’s top goalscorers from the past 15 seasons? It’s a tricky one…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

That has been the kind of transformation Fernandes has had on this United team, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looking so much more devastating when going forward.

United have been blessed with some great attacking talents over the course of their history, and if Fernandes continues in this vein, then there’s no reason why he can’t join them.

Aston Villa: Jed Steer faces two months out with ankle injury

Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer will miss two months of action due to an ankle injury (via Sky Sports News), meaning he will be unavailable for the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie versus Liverpool next month.

The 27-year-old hobbled off against Wolves on Sunday after just seven minutes (BBC Sport), and the extent of his problem has now been confirmed.

Steer was only starting the game against Villa’s West Midlands rivals due to an injury to regular first-choice stopper Tom Heaton.

It was his first league start of the campaign (Transfermarkt) but, as mentioned, it lasted just seven minutes as he picked up an injury which forced him off.

It was initially feared that he had ruptured his Achilles but that isn’t the case.

However, following a scan on Monday, it was confirmed that he had sustained a calf injury, which will mean that he is likely to be out until the new year.

He now joins a growing list of players with injuries at Villa Park, with Jack Grealish, Bjorn Engels and Heaton also struggling at the moment (Daily Mail).

Whilst Steer isn’t a regular in the Premier League, he has been Dean Smith’s chosen goalkeeper in their Carabao Cup campaign.

Indeed, he has started all three of their matches in that competition so far (Transfermarkt), but he will now definitely miss the quarter-final tie against Liverpool at Villa Park, which is a blow.

Orjan Nyland replaced Steer at Molineux, and he could now be in line to play in the League Cup – the 29 year-old was disappointing in the matches he played last term.

Meanwhile, Heaton’s injury is thought not to be too serious, and Smith is reportedly hopeful that he will be fit to face Newcastle United in their next Premier League outing (Express & Star).

Aston Villa fans, would you play Orjan Nyland in the Carabao Cup with Jed Steer now injured? Let us know in the comments below…

Spurs fans react to Graham Roberts’ transfer suggestion

Tottenham fans are no doubt eager to see what moves Jose Mourinho will end up making in the transfer window now that he has officially taken over the hot seat from Mauricio Pochettino.

Of course, we don’t know which players the Special One would actually prefer at Tottenham Hotspur and, since we’ve only seen them play one game under their new coach, it’s difficult to make any clear conclusions regarding the areas that are most in need of improvement.

But Graham Roberts, a former Tottenham Hotspur player, has suggested that Spurs could do a simple swap deal with Real Madrid that would see Gareth Bale go one way and Christian Eriksen the other.

Upon seeing this proposal, many Spurs fans were divided over what would certainly be a headline-making deal.

Some thought it was a brilliant idea as it would suit both parties, while others suggested that Los Blancos would never accept it.

You can see some of their replies to Roberts’ suggestion down in the collection of tweets below:

Meanwhile, many Spurs fans were left in awe of their players’ performance for his national team last week.

Man Utd must look past Emre Can’s Liverpool history and sign him in January

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are considering making a January move for Juventus man Emre Can.

What’s the word?

The Red Devils have seen first-team midfielders in Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera depart the club this calendar year, and after making no signings in that position during the summer transfer window, they are lacking significant depth.

Now, according to Sky Sports, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are keen on former Liverpool ace Can, and it is claimed Juventus would want in the region of £35m to let the Germany international go.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

The 25-year-old is yet to start a game this season, and his future in Turin has been further clouded by his surprise omission from the Champions League squad this campaign – a situation that he publicly admitted would have caused him to leave had he known about it earlier.

Redemption

The art of being a bona-fide box-to-box midfielder appears to be dying out, what with players appearing to specialise in either being a anchor man, or an advanced play-maker. But in Can, United would be getting a real throwback player, who contributes just as much defensively, as he does going forward.

In the Italian top-flight last season, the German averaged 2.2 tackles, 0.7 key passes and 1.1 shots per game – the kind of all-action dynamism United could really do with. But more so than what he has already shown on the pitch, it is the tantalising prospect of what his past history could inspire him to do in the future.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hailed the midfielder’s personality after a game against Burnley, and that could well be key when it comes to the Red Devils potentially making a decision on whether to sign him.

“Emre is a boy with an outstanding attitude. I really like to speak positively about the player.  Emre’s second half was really good, but first half, around the (Burnley) goal, that’s the challenge you need to have before the cross. You have to react and he reacted well second half.”

That “outstanding attitude” may prove to work out in the Red Devils’ favour. The 25-year-old would have a chance to prove his old employers wrong with a switch to Old Trafford. So whilst United may be wary of signing someone with Liverpool in their past, Can’s redemption journey could see him play his best football in the shirt of his former side’s arch-rivals.

Just how would they feel at Anfield if the German starts showing his best form for their most historic adversaries? It really would pour salt onto the wounds.
