Liverpool transfer links to Fabian Ruiz justified by flawless Spain showing

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Liverpool were linked with Napoli star Fabian Ruiz last month, and the Spain international showed exactly why on Tuesday night against Sweden.

Calciomercato claimed last month that the Reds are one of four clubs chasing Ruiz, and The Daily Mail reported a week later that Real Madrid, Barcelona and the Merseysiders all want the 23 year-old.

With both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain struggling through various injuries during their time at Anfield, it is certainly feasible that Jurgen Klopp could seek another addition in the centre of the park, and Ruiz showed on Tuesday he could be everything Keita was supposed to be.

A little bit of everything, best of both worlds, the perfect hybrid. Those were the types of words used to describe Keita upon his arrival, due to his stats representing an almost flawless all-round game.

Indeed, in his final Bundesliga season with RB Leipzig, the Guinea international scored six goals and provided five assists, averaged 1.6 shots, 1.4 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game while also boasting an impressive 2.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions each match, per WhoScored.

At Liverpool though, every single one of those numbers has declined drastically, and Ruiz is now posting similar numbers in Italy to those that Keita did in Germany.

In six Serie A showings this campaign, the Spaniard averages 2.7 shots per game, 1.7 key passes, 1.2 dribbles, 1.2 tackles and 1.7 interceptions.

Against Sweden on Tuesday, not only did he secure the highest Sofascore rating of any player while setting up the last-minute goal that put his country into next summer’s European Championship, he dropped an almost perfect performance on both sides of the ball.

He led the game in touches with 115, but only gave the ball away seven times, racking up a 94% passing accuracy. To put that into perspective, the second highest-rated player, Dani Carvajal, gave the ball away 19 times and recorded 88% passing.

Ruiz won all five of his duels, including three tackles, and his aforementioned assist was just one of four total key passes on the night. Of the eight long balls he attempted, six of them were successful, while he also completed the only dribble he attempted and registered a shot on target.

It really was the type of box-to-box, commanding, dominating display that Keita was supposed to bring with him to Anfield, and the Reds’ reported interested in Ruiz looks more and more believable with every passing performance.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka can help cure a five-year problem

If anything summed up Arsenal’s demise it would be Granit Xhaka taking up the captaincy.

The decision is bewildering. It is baffling and, on the face of it, it doesn’t make too much sense.

Xhaka is a tough character, someone who isn’t afraid to get stuck in. The Swiss has a fighter’s instinct.

Yet, he is also a hothead and has a terrible tendency to throw himself into a tackle that isn’t needed. Xhaka makes too many mistakes and it’s rather strange that so much faith has been put in him on a regular basis.

Since arriving in the Premier League, the midfielder has made seven errors leading to a goal. Seven. It’s a remarkable statistic.

So why has he been given the captaincy?

Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It’s no lie to say there are a lack of candidates. Rob Holding and Mesut Ozil were charged with the duties against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup while the recently departed Nacho Monreal also took the armband in 2018/19.

A home grown lad, Holding would undeniably be a good candidate. Perhaps that will come in the future when, quite arguably, Matteo Guendouzi and Hector Bellerin could be in the frame too.

Guendouzi drove Arsenal forward in inspirational fashion against Tottenham and Aston Villa. As for the latter, he’s made his feelings felt on matters away from football on a regular basis, showing a sign of maturity that you want in a captain.

For the most part, Xhaka’s style doesn’t warrant the captaincy but it rather sums up an underlying issue at the Emirates – the lack of leaders.

This hasn’t just been a problem recently, it’s been going on for the past five years or to an extreme extent since Patrick Vieira left.

There are some damning statistics that surround Arsenal’s last three captains. Since Thomas Vermaelen departed for Barcelona, not a single skipper has played over 20 games.

Mikel Arteta spent large periods out, even Vermaelen did. Per Mertesacker, though, played just a solitary game during one season as captain. Laurent Koscielny then spent half of his tenure with the armband out on the sidelines too.

But this is why Xhaka could be a good choice. It’s why there’s a possibility that he could end Arsenal’s struggles.

He already has experience in the role having captained his country and he actually plays. An Arsenal captain that plays? Surely not.

The three men before him barely featured in many matches whilst possessing the captaincy so the 27-year-old mitigates this factor significantly.

It should be a basic requirement for your captain to play consistently but not even that’s been possible on the red side of north London for what feels like an eternity.

When it comes to the midfield general, he appears to play all the time. No matter how many errors he makes or the negative environment he creates around the Emirates, both Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery have refused to drop him.

On that evidence, does he not warrant the captaincy? Some may say he doesn’t, others will say it begins to make more sense.

Whether you like it or not, Xhaka is one of the first names on the team sheet and that hasn’t been the case with a Gunners captain for over five years.

Change has been needed in N5 and simply finding a leader was one of them. He may not be able to solve their problems overnight, but in terms of a long-winded issue that’s been building up with the likes of Arteta, Mertesacker and Koscielny, he can help end the curse.

Vermaelen fell victim to injuries in his second season as captain and since then the Gunners have failed to appoint a leader who regularly features in the starting XI.

It’s been five years in the making but Emery may finally have addressed the issue by trusting Xhaka with the captaincy.

In 2016/17, Xhaka featured 32 times in the Premier League. The campaign after he didn’t miss a single match, becoming a key player in the side.

Last term the former Gladbach man appeared in 29 league fixtures.

Who says there’s no atmosphere at the Emirates? The evidence in the video above suggests otherwise…

That puts some of the other captains at Arsenal over the last handful of years to shame. He is a permanent fixture in the team and, for that reason alone, the captaincy is perhaps a little more deserved.

It is impossible to ignore all of his faults and criticism will likely continue but he does help to put one problematic situation to bed.

So far this season we’ve not seen the best of Xhaka. His crazy tackle that earned Spurs a penalty in the north London derby sums that up. To put it bluntly, it was a moment of madness.

But maybe, just maybe, being named permanent Arsenal captain can help him take on the extra responsibility.

Leeds’ Jack Harrison shows off the benefits of his work this summer

It’s hard not to notice Harrison’s abs through his shirt in the image, but despite the fact that the Man City loanee had been working with a personal trainer this summer, some of his former friends from the MLS claimed that the image wasn’t all that it seemed.

Richie Laryea and Kwame Awuah were quick to try and mug off the Leeds man.

Away from the attempts at banter from his friends, it’s quite incredible to see the shape Harrison is in after a summer of working hard on his fitness. Let’s be honest, he’s ripped.

Liverpool duo Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg’s CL inclusion says a lot

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Liverpool’s young players were given a boost today as Jurgen Klopp named Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg in his Champions League squad.

The pair, aged 16 and 17 respectively, only arrived at Anfield this summer but have already performed well for the U23 team and appear to have done enough to show their manager they are worthy of being in contention.

The European champions will have to defend their title in group stage matches against Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg, and KRC Genk, and it is the fixture against the Belgian side which the youngsters could target as an opportunity to feature.

Van den Berg faces a difficult task with four senior centre-backs ahead of him in the pecking order, but with Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez frequently suffering from injuries, he could feasibly get his chance.

Despite his youth, the Dutchman featured in 20 competitive fixtures for Zwolle’s first-team in the last campaign, and the fact he has been selected ahead of the highly-rated Ki-Jana Hoever shows Klopp’s opinion of him.

This time in 2018, Klopp didn’t include a player without a senior appearance under his belt, and therefore van den Berg and Elliott could be destined for big things, starting now.

Elliott has already made big strides in his short career, and made an impression on his previous manager as Scott Parker handed him his professional debut – his appearance against Wolves making him the youngest Premier League player ever.

Since joining the Reds, he has shown signs that he could have what it takes to break into the first team, with his work rate off the ball matching his skill on it, and if he continues to impress by linking up with teammates such as Rhian Brewster then he could play his way into Champions League contention.

Even if the duo don’t feature on the pitch, their involvement in the squad will still be a big boost for them, and is evidence of Klopp’s faith in them, a belief which they should use to their advantage.

The German hasn’t trusted other promising youngsters such as Harry Wilson or Hoever in this way, and that could hint that these two are the real deal.

Barcelona: Juventus set to present offer for Juan Miranda

Juventus are set to make an offer to Barcelona for highly-rated left-back Juan Miranda, according to Calciomercato.

The 19-year-old is held in extremely high regard at the Camp Nou, though after the Catalans spent £16.5m on Junior Firpo from Real Betis earlier this month, consistent game-time this season looks extremely unlikely for the young defender.

First-choice left-back Jordi Alba is one of the first names on manager Ernesto Valverde’s team-sheet, while Firpo is expected to be handed plenty of opportunities as the campaign progresses.

This leaves Miranda’s position in Catalonia uncertain, with a move away from Spain looking like the best option for the teenager. Juventus are keen on bringing him to Italy, and are reportedly set to offer €10m to prize him away from Turin.

90min report that Juve could also offer Barca Daniele Rugani as part of the deal, though it is understood that the Catalans aren’t interested in the 25-year-old and would prefer to keep any proposed dealings cash-only.

Juventus are facing stiff competition from Marseille, however, with the French outfit also in talks with Barcelona over a potential loan move for Miranda.

The Ligue 1 side are also thought to be interested in signing the 19-year-old permanently, with Barca keen to include a buy-back clause in any deal that would see him move to France.

Miranda’s agent – Jose Maria Orobitg – confirmed to Foot Mercato that talks with Marseille are ongoing, saying: “Yes, there are contacts with Marseille. Everyone is talking about loans, but there is nothing done yet. We’re working on an agreement, but there are other offers.

“There are also discussions on a buy option for Marseille and a buy-back clause for Barcelona so as not to lose control of the player.”

Offloading Miranda makes sense for Barcelona considering they have two very accomplished left-backs already, though losing him for just €10m could prove to be poor business in the future as he is still so young and has a huge amount of potential.

Selling to Marseille and including a buy-back clause ensures that they would be able to re-sign him in the future should they wish, which seems to be a much better option for the Spaniards.

Failing that, a loan move to France could also be a good option, and would ensure that they don’t lose him permanently at all.

Spurs fans loved Troy Parrott’s debut in pre-season vs Juventus

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans were left impressed with Troy Parrott’s senior debut for the club against Juventus at the weekend.

The striker started the pre-season friendly, a part of the International Champions Cup, against the Italian giants in Singapore on Sunday.

Parrott played the first 45 minutes in a game that ended 3-2 to Spurs, with his replacement, Harry Kane, scoring a barely believable winning goal from the halfway line in injury time.

The 17-year-old has been prolific in the youth teams in north London, scoring 15 goals in 13 outings for the Under-18s, while also netting two in 12 for the Under-23s.

A Republic of Ireland youth international, he has won 11 caps for the Under-17s and four for the Under-19s.

Hatem Abd Elhamed lacks the speciality that Celtic need in defence

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Celtic are interested in signing Israeli international defender Hatem Abd Elhamed, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

The Hoops have already strengthened their defensive options this summer with the acquisitions of Christopher Jullien and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo, but they need more players centrally and on the right.

One player who has experience of playing in both positions is Hapoel Be’er Sheva defender Abd Elhamed, who the paper say that Celtic could move for in a £1.6m deal.

He is an international teammate of Hoops star Nir Bitton, winning his first cap for his country in a recent qualifier against Poland.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

Is he what Celtic need?

A look at Abd Elhamed’s playing career shows a player who has had a colourful life in the game so far. At the age of 28 he’s played for five clubs and and in a variety of positions too.

During the 2014/15 season he appeared to play exclusively as a midfielder with Dinamo Bucharest, but was also highlighted playing as a right-back in a scouting video from his time at FC Ashdod.

Last season he played most of his games at Be’er Sheva as a central defender but also played on the left and right sides of defence.

That verstaility may be seen as a bonus for Celtic, but his lack of specialism in one position throughout his career rings alarm bells when it comes to his defensive prowess.

The Hoops need players in their prime who have honed their skills as experienced pros in their roles, not a player who appears to change his position almost as often as his clubs.

Given he is in his late 20s, to be suitable for Celtic he’d also be expected to have experience in a more high profile league or plenty of appearances in European competition, with neither sticking out in his career record.

The Bhoys should forget about this jack-of-all-trades, as he is a master of none.

Liverpool: It seems AC Milan really are quite keen on Dejan Lovren

AC Milan are set to ramp up their interest in Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren to ensure he signs this summer, according to Italian outlet TuttoSport (via Calcio Mercato).

A central defender has been highlighted as the number one priority by new boss Marco Giampaolo and Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren, whose role in the squad has somewhat diminished since the rise of Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, apparently fits the bill.

After claiming himself to be one of the best central defenders in the world, the Croatian has somewhat struggled to find a foothold in Klopp’s plans. Following his return from injury, which left him unavailable until October, Lovren made just 18 appearances all season, and was left on the bench for the all-important Champions League semi-finals and final.

BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks wrote back in January that the former Southampton man ‘might have to start looking for new employers’ following the impressive performance of Fabinho as a central defender against Brighton, while the Liverpool Echo suggested new signing Sepp van den Berg could be fast-tracked into first-team thinking, such is the level of his talent.

Sky Sports, however, have recently claimed the European champions do not want to sell the man who has racked up 126 appearances (Transfermarkt) under Klopp’s stewardship, despite the options they have in central defensive areas.

So, Milan’s interest may indeed fall on deaf ears, should the Reds continue in their reported stance of wanting to retain his services.

Liverpool fans, do you agree Lovren should be sold? Let us know in the comments below…
