Graeme Smith vows to 'advance transformation agenda' after BACC criticism

Graeme Smith has assured South Africans of all races that he is committed to transformation after he was criticised by the Black African Cricket Clubs (BACC), who held a meeting at the Wanderers on Friday. The group, which formed in 2011 after a racially charged split in the Central Gauteng Lions, aim to reposition and grow black African cricket and expressed their mistrust in the current administration’s ability to do that.Smith was not present at the meeting, nor has he been directly approached by the BACC yet. South Africa’s new director of cricket was working in Centurion, venue for the first Test with England, but when asked for comment, he issued this statement saying he understood concerns among the black community about putting “their trust in a white man of my background”.”I’m fully aware that in times of change in any organisation there will be instances of uncertainty and distrust from members of certain groups,” he said. “I’m also well aware that in South Africa, it will take a lot for some members of the black community to put their trust in a white man of my background. I can assure them however that I fully intend to do my best to advance the transformation agenda of Cricket South Africa and ensure that young black African players are given the opportunity that they deserve to reach the highest levels in all areas of the game.”Smith’s acknowledgement of his own privilege came in response to an accusation that he does not fully grasp the black African experience, which is steeped in the legacy of Apartheid segregation. In cricket terms, that is best illustrated by national representation where only eight black African players have been capped at Test level, out of the 107 players since readmission, which speaks to the differences in opportunity and is the BACC’s main concern.”You are sitting with a director of cricket who has the responsibility to develop everyone,” BACC chairman, Ntsongo Sibiya, said. “I am not sure what he understands about a kid in Soweto or in a rural area. I don’t think he understands those dynamics. If you were a black man and Graeme Smith becomes director of cricket, would you trust him to develop your side? I am saying Graeme Smith, the position, not Graeme Smith, the man. I am talking about the director of cricket position. It is a critical position. It needs to be managed. It needs to make sure it does what this country needs. It needs to be someone that thoroughly understands.”In an effort not to concentrate the conversation on race alone, the BACC put forward other names for the director of cricket position, who they believe have more experience in transformation. “Had you said Adrian Birrell or Greg Hayes was the director of cricket, none of us would have complained. They have a track record over time of producing black cricketers,” Lewis Manthata, a BACC member, said.Birrell and Hayes are both from the Eastern Cape, the heartland of black African cricket, and have worked in rural cricket programmes for many years. While Hayes was instrumental in Makhaya Ntini’s development, Birrell has worked as recently as 2017 as the national assistant coach. Smith, despite captaining his country for 11 years, has not worked in development.”There is no one currently in the system who understands how to develop a black African child,” Sibiya said. “We have a lot of players who have come through the system but they don’t make it all the way, not because of ability but because the system halts them and does not allow them to go to the next level.”He pointed to economic issues, such as the differences required in equipment for different kinds of cricketers and the dearth of facilities in townships, as examples. “To produce a bowler, all you need is a pair of spikes,” Sibiya said. “To produce a batter, you need a R10,000 (US$700) bat. You need support. If you look at Temba Bavuma, he has got that support. How do we make sure any boy with potential can come through?”Essentially that speaks to a class issue, which is inevitably tied up with race in South Africa. Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada are both from wealthy backgrounds, while even the likes of Ntini, Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo, who are from more modest beginnings, received scholarships to top schools, where they excelled.Therein lies the BACC’s greatest concern – they want to be able to produce a cricketer from an underprivileged area, who is also allowed to develop there. They have called on the government, CSA (despite its debt forecasts), and the corporate world to provide the funds for this to be made possible. “How do you expect players of colour to come through if there is no investment?” Manthata said. “Government has a responsibility to invest but they have far more important issues to deal with. It’s the responsibility of federations and those with monopoly power.”That presents a conundrum. South Africa’s past has created a present where the wealth of the country is more prevalent in some demographics (ie. non-black African), but for transformation to succeed it needs the buy-in of all races. The BACC, whose names suggests otherwise, claim their meetings, which will be taken around the country soon, are open to all. They also said their agenda covers all players of colour even though it is most concerned with black African players.”The meeting said anyone that has vested interests in black African people can attend,” Sibiya said. “We had white people, we had coloured people. It was a black African agenda but not necessarily a black African meeting. We are looking at transformation generally and black Africans in particular as the most marginalised group from the past.”South Africa went into the Centurion Test – the first since Smith took the director of cricket job and appointed Mark Boucher as head coach – with only four non-white players, including one black African, which is shy of the transformation target of six and two, although injuries to Bavuma and Ngidi have limited the selectors’ options.

Ratcliffe must replace Man Utd flop who’s rinsed the club of £106m

Manchester United’s season has been full of inconsistencies both on and off the field, but they’re finally starting to find form at the perfect time.

Erik ten Hag’s team has now won all of their last five matches, with their sights firmly set on achieving a Champions League spot.

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag.

The manager’s signings since arriving have been very hit and miss, but one aspect that is concerning is the wages some have been put on.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a first-team player who is draining the club of millions every single month.

Casemiro’s salary at Man United

Former Real Madrid star Casemiro left Spain back in the summer of 20222, seeking a new challenge away from the Santiago Bernabeu, with United acquiring his services.

The 31-year-old arrived in a deal worth £70m, and made his first start on 9 October in a 2-1 win against Everton, where he picked up an assist and made four tackles.

Casemiro

To get hold of the defensive midfielder, United handed Casemiro a rather extortionate salary within a contract until 2026, which will earn him £18.2m this season alone, as per Capology.

Not including bonuses, the number 18 collects £350k-per-week, but have his performances justified the costs so far?

Man Utd made to pay for ditching "amazing" star amid huge Shaw blow

Man United are now without a true left back.

ByTom Lever Feb 22, 2024 Casemiro's wage compared to the rest of the Man Utd squad

This season, Casemiro has had to deal with an injury setback from October to January, which saw him miss 17 games across all competitions.

The former Porto gem returned to action towards the end of last month, and he has started all five games since. However, his individual performances are beginning to foreshadow what could be next for the midfielder, which could see Sir Jim Ratcliffe revaluate Casemiro’s future at the club.

His vulnerability has been on show for all in the victories over Aston Villa and Luton Town, with journalist Alex Turk stating the following during the game at Villa Park:

“And Casemiro… Horrible. He’s become a serious weakness in this team. Amrabat can’t be worse than this, surely?”

The tenacious tackler was also hooked at half-time at the weekend due to being on a yellow card, his fifth in the last six, losing seven of his nine duels, and being dribbled past twice. But where does he rank compared to his teammates in terms of wages?

Casemiro

£350k

Raphael Varane

£340k

Marcus Rashford

£300k

Anthony Martial

£250k

Mason Mount

£250k

As you can see, Casemiro – whose signing Ratcliffe is believed to have privately questioned – is the highest earner at Man United, earning seven times the amount of Alejandro Garnacho, who earns £50k-per-week.

If the Brazilian’s performances do not improve between now and the end of the season, then it’s fair to say that his future at the Red Devils could be under threat, particularly when considering that he was heavily linked with an exit last month.

By the end of the season, the experienced asset will have also cost the club around £106m when factoring in his initial £70m transfer fee and £36m in wages – further reason for him to be shown the door.

Changes are happening and continue to be expected, and Casemiro could be among those making way in the summer, with a door open for a move to Saudi Arabia.

Farke must unleash £25k-p/w Leeds maverick alongside Summerville

Leeds United can forget about their battle to secure promotion to the Premier League for today as they prepare to face Plymouth away from home in the FA Cup.

The two sides are set to battle it out this evening in the replay of their fourth round clash as they look to progress through to the fifth round of the competition.

They have a trip to a Premier League side waiting for them as the winner of tonight's game will face either Aston Villa or Chelsea, who have a replay of their own on Wednesday night, away from home.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Leeds and Plymouth held each other to a 1-1 draw in the initial match-up at Elland Road but there must be a winner at Home Park, whether that is in normal time, extra-time, or on penalties.

The Whites head into this match off the back of a 1-0 win away at Bristol City in the Championship last Friday, as Wilfried Gnonto's second-half goal was enough to secure all three points for his side.

Daniel Farke may now be looking to make some alterations from the starting XI that lined up at Ashton Gate, in order to provide players on the fringe of the squad with more opportunities to impress.

Latest Leeds United injury news

Leeds are without several first-team players ahead of this clash with Plymouth at Home Park, which possibly restricts the number of changes the German head coach may want to make.

Central defender Pascal Struijk will not be available for selection, as confirmed by Farke, and his continued absence has offered Ethan Ampadu the chance to impress at centre-back, whilst it could also open the door for 32-year-old Liam Cooper to start this evening.

Another player who will not be in the squad tonight is Wales international Daniel James, who the manager has also ruled out of contention to feature.

As you can see in the table above, the former Manchester United forward has provided consistent quality in the final third as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

He has outperformed his xG and been rewarded with fewer assists than 'big chances' created, which suggests that his teammates have let him down at times throughout the season so far.

His continued absence is, therefore, less than ideal for Farke but it does also open up an opportunity for other players to step up, as Gnonto did in his place against Bristol City last week.

For tonight, though, the German tactician must unleash winger Jaidon Anthony from the start, alongside Crysencio Summerville on the opposite flank, after his superb display against Plymouth in the first match.

Why Jaidon Anthony should start against Plymouth

The 24-year-old whiz arrived on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth at the start of the season and failed to hit the ground running in Yorkshire.

Leeds winger Jaidon Anthony.

Summerville, James, and Georginio Rutter have made it difficult for Farke to select alternative forward options and that has left Anthony and Gnonto with limited starts in the Championship so far this term.

The Cherries winger has only started two matches in the league for Leeds and been used as a substitute in 19 more games, which has resulted in a lack of consistent end product on the pitch from the youngster.

Anthony has scored one goal and created 1.02 xA in those 21 appearances, which is far from an eye-catching return, but he did impress against Plymouth in the first game between the two sides in the FA Cup last month.

As you can see in the table above, the English dynamo showcased his quality in the final third with a goal, which was a stunning strike from range, whilst he also created plenty of opportunities for his teammates, who were unable to find the back of the net.

That level of performance should not be a complete surprise, despite his lack of action for Leeds this season, as he caught the eye for Bournemouth in the Championship during the 2021/22 campaign.

The £25k-per-week ace, who was hailed as a "brilliant" lad by Farke, started 38 league matches for the Cherries and contributed with eight goals, seven assists, and 18 'big chances' created as they won promotion to the Premier League.

These statistics, along with his display against Plymouth at Elland Road, show that the quality is there for Anthony to be a maverick who can change and win matches with key contributions out of nothing in the final third when given minutes, which is why Farke must unleash him alongside Summerville this evening.

Crysencio Summerville's Championship brilliance

The Dutch wizard has been in sensational form in the Championship so far this season and could make his first appearance in the FA Cup this term tonight, with James missing.

His performances in the second tier have been extraordinary as the talented young whiz has consistently shown off his ability to determine matches with goals and assists.

Summerville has racked up 12 goals in 25 league starts for Farke's side, two more than any other player within the squad, and has been the club's biggest goal threat.

The 22-year-old maestro has also racked up seven assists, second only to Rutter's tally of nine, and this shows that he is an excellent creator, as well as a scorer.

Within the current Leeds squad, Summerville currently ranks first for key passes (2.9), second for dribbles completed (2.5), and second for fouls won (1.6) per game in the Championship.

These statistics show that the Whites star has consistently provided quality at the top end of the pitch in a variety of ways, through goals, dribbles, chances created, and fouls won.

Now, imagine Summerville and Anthony causing havoc on the wings against Plymouth this evening. They could be a nightmare for opposition full-backs, or wing-backs as may be the case tonight, with their direct play and quality end product, which is why Farke must unleash both of them to earn progression through to the fifth round.

Facundo Pellistri has just told Man United to let him leave, deal imminent

Manchester United are in the midst of moving some players out of Old Trafford and one man who has been at the centre of speculation is now on the verge of a quick exit.

Manchester United begin squad overhaul

Despite hope of Erik ten Hag bringing in some new reinforcements to help revitalise his squad, Manchester United have been far more active on the outgoings front, with several players being moved out of the club this window. Of course, the most notable name to walk through the exit door at Old Trafford this month is Jadon Sancho, who has departed for Borussia Dortmund, putting his long-standing feud with Ten Hag behind him.

Tunisia international Hannibal Mejbri has left to join La Liga outfit Sevilla on loan, and the Spanish heavyweights retain an option to buy the midfielder at the end of the campaign for £17.2 million.

Following a similar theme, Benfica have become the beneficiaries of Alvaro Fernandez's talents after securing the Ferrol-born ace's signature on a loan deal. In what will be his third stint away from the club, the 20-year-old will hope to be part of the Portuguese giants' efforts to secure the Liga Portugal crown for the 39th time in their history.

Donny van de Beek moved to Eintracht Frankfurt at the start of the month. At the same time, Sergio Reguilon returned to parent club Tottenham Hotspur following a temporary spell at the Premier League giants.

Evaluating the situation, it would appear the Red Devils have all intentions of continuing to trim their bloated squad this window, and now one of their rising stars has now signalled his desire to leave the club, as per a report.

Facundo Pellistri set to leave Manchester United

Facundo Pellistri has been on the fringes at Manchester United this campaign and is said to have given his seal of approval regarding a move to Granada, according to reports in his homeland, via Sport Witness.

Alexander Medina is keen to recruit the 22-year-old and the player is now believed to have informed the Red Devils of his desire to link up with his countryman in Spain, with the report claiming deal may even be done in the "next few hours".

The outlet doesn't state whether the Uruguay international would move to Nuevo Estadio de Los Carmenes on a loan deal or permanent agreement. Nevertheless, further claims from The Manchester Evening News cite that any departure would be on a loan basis as he looks to gain regular senior minutes.

Man United's Facundo Pellistri

Labelled "skillful" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Pellistri had made 14 appearances across all competitions this campaign, notching a solitary assist (Pellistri statistics – Transfermarkt).

Forming part of a wider strategy to farm players out away from Old Trafford, it remains to be seen whether the Montevideo-born winger has a future at Manchester United.

Confirmed: Liverpool now publicly say Leeds target can leave this month

Leeds United are after a right-back in the time that remains of the January transfer window, having allowed Djed Spence to return to Tottenham Hotspur six months early, and then sent Luke Ayling on loan to Middlesbrough. Daniel Farke has looked at numerous options for the position, including Ben Johnson, Connor Roberts and Neco Williams, but the Championship promotion-chasers haven't made a breakthrough just yet.

Clubs may be wary of letting players go in January, even if they're not regular starters, because it's harder to replace them in the squad in a shorter, mid-season window. However, this may not be a problem in the case of Liverpool's Calvin Ramsay, another of the possible targets for Leeds. The Reds recalled Ramsay from a season-long loan at Preston earlier this month, and it seemed as if they may need him at first amid a pile-up of defensive injuries that saw Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas and Joel Matip all sidelined.

However, with Conor Bradley starting the last two games in Alexander-Arnold's stead and impressing (he won the man of the match award against Fulham in the Carabao Cup semifinal first leg and then provided his first Premier League assist in a 4-0 win over Bournemouth), Leeds have received some good news about Ramsay's availability.

Liverpool confirm Leeds target Ramsay is available

Speaking in a press conference ahead of the second leg of that Fulham tie on Wednesday, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders confirmed that Leeds target Ramsay can leave on loan in the next nine days amid considerable "interest". Lijnders said that the Reds would use Fabio Carvalho and Tyler Morton, both of whom are starting at another second-tier club in Hull City, as a reference point.

Calvin Ramsay

"There's interest – [which] is good. We have to find – with the agent, with himself, with the clubs – the right decision for the player. He needs to have game time, needs to play, have a lot of success. That's why I like the move of Fabio [Carvalho], for example. He plays a lot, is straight away decisive – together with Tyler [Morton].

"Matt Newberry, our head of loans, he's full of business this winter. He needs a holiday after this for sure! These boys all have potential, otherwise they would not be with us. But they need as well the right pathway. What you said, a good loan can do wonders."

This comes after recent reports have confirmed Farke and co have been showing an interest in the young full-back.

Leeds already aware of what Ramsay can do

Since Ramsay arrived at Liverpool from Aberdeen in the summer of 2022, he's seen his progress heavily disrupted by injury. The Scotsman has only made four first-team appearances in that period, two for the Reds and then two on loan at Preston, having grappled with a knee issue and illness.

However, Leeds have been admirers since his days with the Dons, and their recruitment staff will remember his impressive performance in Scotland. In 2021/22, Ramsay, still a teenager at that point, scored one goal and provided nine assists in 33 appearances across all competitions. That form earned him the Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year award, a clear marker of his potential.

What Ramsay needs now is a settled run of games without any injury issues, and then he'll be able to reach that level again. 17-year-old Archie Gray has virtually had the right-back position locked down this season, but by bringing in a specialist like Ramsay, Leeds could free him up to move into a more natural midfield role and get the best of both worlds.

Somerset switch focus to one-day final after comfortable win against Warwickshire

Sam Hain unbeaten on 92 in losing cause as hosts seal match inside three days

David Hopps at Taunton22-May-2019Somerset’s thoughts are firmly on the Royal London Cup final at Lord’s on Saturday, and the prospect of their first limited-overs trophy for 14 years, but once their fate is known attention will turn again to what has become a perennial question: is this the year they can win the County Championship for the first time?In fact, that’s a conservative assessment. Tom Abell, Somerset’s captain, was asked after victory over Warwickshire if they could win the treble. With the first trophy not even gathered in yet, Young Mr Abell treated the assembled media to his most bristly, firm-jawed expression he could muster and pronounced something ultra-responsible about not looking too far ahead. Quite.Warwickshire took some chiselling out on the third morning with Somerset needing a delayed lunch to complete a 49-run victory. The chief obstacle was Sam Hain, who extended his overnight 43 to 92 not out. He registered the only half-century of the match and played with a sobriety while so many others were throwing back tequila slammers.ALSO READ: Dawson, Willey in Warwickshire’s sights as Farbrace looks to lift clubWith Liam Norwell’s seven-for on debut also in mind, Warwickshire’s head coach Jim Troughton reflected: “We had the game’s outstanding batsman and bowler, but still lost the game. But we went toe to toe with Somerset who are the in-form side in the country.” Nevertheless, Somerset remain top, Warwickshire bottom, and they will be grateful that only one county goes down this season to accommodate a divisional restructuring. Not too many conclusions can be drawn from such a fast-on-the-draw encounter on a skittish pitch, but Somerset’s Championship challenge can last deep into the season, especially as an outstanding side has yet to announce itself. Jack Brookes’ return to fitness will supplement their pace bowling stocks and the fact that they have loaned out players with as much ability as Jamie Overton and Dom Bess tells of the quality at their disposal. If they lack anything, it is one more batsmen with an old-fashioned desire to bat long, a Sam Hain in other words.Victory just after one o’clock on the third day gives Somerset ample time to prepare for a Lord’s final that is somewhat devalued by the absence of Hampshire’s England do, but Abell knows that Somerset’s weakest performance over 50 overs was against a below-strength Middlesex side so remains wary of over confidence.Jason Kerr, Somerset’s coach, played down suggestions that a green surface had been prepared with an early finish in mind. He was wise to say nothing to vex the pitch inspectors, and if Somerset pushed things a little, they remained within acceptable limits.”It is not an exact science what the surface is going to do,” Kerr said. “We wanted a little bit more pace in the surface than the match against Surrey. There were only two days between the games and preparation time was limited. I don’t think anybody anticipated the cricket to be as quick or as action packed as it has been.”I encourage the cricketers to adapt themselves but there’s no doubt we need to adapt as well. There is always a fine line. I am still not comfortable at the minute. There are too many soft dismissals. But the way we are operating as a bowling unit is arguably getting us out of a little bit of trouble with the bat.”Warwickshire began the morning on 103 for 6, needing a further 136 to win on a pitch that had assisted the seamers and, to a lesser degree the spinners, throughout the game. Three wickets fell in the first hour: Henry Brookes poking at Liam Gregory’s wide outswinger; Jeetan Patel bowled leg stump by one that came back sharply; and Norwell, Warwickshire’s hero with the ball, caught at the wicket against Tim Groenewald, trying to force off the back foot.An early finish appeared to be on the cards. The Somerset members who had grumbled about free admission (“what do we get in return then?”) were probably looking at the ne’er -do-wells and thinking it was a good thing too.But Hain was dropped on 49 by Davies after getting an inside edge to a ball from Gregory and the resulting single brought up the game’s only half-century, some reward for his technical excellence and determined mindset.Norwell survived a tough caught and bowled chance to Groenewald in the same over before edging a back-foot force to the keeper in the bowler’s next over. With 99 needed from the last pair, there was minimal tension, but Oliver Hannon-Dalby provided wholehearted support. On 84, Hain was given another life when Groenewald misjudged a top-edged hook off Gregory at fine-leg and allowed the ball to drop over his head before bouncing over the rope. With lunch delayed, the last-wicket stand grew to 49 before Hannon-Dalby steered a wide ball from Gregory to Overton (who had an excellent all-round match) at gully. “We were getting a bit twitchy,” Abell admitted. But victory had been logged and it was preparation time for the Lord’s final to begin in earnest.

The "special" Liverpool teen who is worth even more than Quansah to Klopp

There's no denying that Liverpool are enjoying a tremendous resurgence after falling by the wayside last season, with Jurgen Klopp's summer transfer activity fuelling the new era for "Liverpool 2.0" – as the German has coined his new-look team.

A fifth-placed Premier League finish in 2022/23 meant that the Anfield side's illustrious seven-year stay in the Champions League came to an end, but even qualifying for the Europa League looked unattainable before a brilliant late-season purple patch, laying the framework for this term's restored approach.

But this year, the remoulding of the midfield has thrown Liverpool back into contention for the Premier League title, having lost just one of the opening 15 fixtures – two points behind first-placed Arsenal and boasting a four-point cushion over Manchester City, who languish in fourth.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool's production line has not been the most prolific over the years – certainly when comparing the success of Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea's academy numbers, but several key figures have filtered through over the years.

Steven Gerrard is the salient example, obviously, but Trent Alexander-Arnold is fashioning a career of immense proportions and Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are both talented young players with big futures ahead.

Breaking into the first team this year, Jarell Quansah has been the latest homegrown prospect to make a mark on Klopp's side, with the German manager unquestionably raising the standard of the formative fold alongside the silver-laden success that has rained down in red on Merseyside since his appointment in 2015.

Jarell Quansah's season in numbers

Quansah spent last season out on loan with League One side Bristol Rovers, joining on a short-term deal in January and making 16 appearances as the Somerset side finished 17th.

His manager at the time said this: “He’s as good on the ball that you’ll need to be in terms of building out from the back. He’s going to get bigger, he’s going to get stronger, he’s going to get faster. His anticipation of the game is going to be better because more senior games get you that. He has an enormous future in front of him."

It's a testament to his talent that Klopp decided to focus his summer attention solely on the rebuilding of the engine room, not bolstering the backline despite clear signs that reinforcements were necessary.

Quansah was given a shot, and after impressing against Newcastle United on his Premier League debut as ten-man Liverpool clinched a resounding comeback victory, Alexander-Arnold heralded his "absolutely phenomenal" effort.

Having now chalked up ten senior showings for his outfit – earning an assist as Liverpool defeated Leicester City in the Carabao Cup – Quansah has proved his worth in the senior squad and won over the hearts of supporters, who eagerly anticipate his continuing rise to the top.

Featuring prominently in the Europa League, the 20-year-old has completed 91% of his passes, averaged 3.5 ball recoveries and 2.3 clearances per game and won a decent 56% of his contested duels, as per Sofascore.

He's more than just a promising starlet and there is a real opportunity over the coming months for Quansah to stake a claim for increased responsibility following stricken Joel Matip's season-ending ACL injury, with the 32-year-old Cameroonian also out of contract at the end of the campaign.

According to CIES Football Observatory's valuation model, the 6 foot 5 colossus is currently valued at £4m, and while this figure will only rise over the coming years, it's a reminder of how early into his professional career he is.

The Reds hold another player of even greater potential in Stefan Bajcetic, who has scarcely been seen since the early months of 2023 after sustaining an abductor injury to end his tremendous breakthrough campaign back in March but is undoubtedly a prodigious talent.

The fee Liverpool paid for Stefan Bajcetic

Bajcetic was signed from Celta Vigo for just £224k in December 2020 when he was just 16-years-old, with Klopp's side convincing him to join the club despite interest from Manchester United.

Now among the most exciting hopefuls in the ranks, Bajcetic made 33 appearances for Liverpool's youth sides, posting five goal contributions, before the first-team came calling, in need of something different.

The 19-year-old made his debut off the bench in the early phase of the 2022/23 campaign, entering the play as Liverpool trounced Bournemouth 9-0 in the Premier League.

Not featuring again until the end of the festive period, Bajcetic burst into life and cemented a prominent role in the team as Liverpool struggled for form.

Described as "special" by journalist Zubin Daver, Bajcetic blitzed into life last season, with Liverpool's flagging midfield in desperate need of some energy and youthful exuberance, which the Spaniard brought in abundance.

Scoring a brilliant goal against Aston Villa in December, Bajcetic ended up playing 11 times in the English top-flight, complementing his goal with a 79% pass success rate, also succeeding in 64% of his dribbles and winning 3.1 duels per game.

CIES Football Observatory now places the teenager at £17m, and given that there is still so much room for improvement and growth, musing over where he will be in a few years time is an exciting thought indeed.

FBref even liken Arsenal's Declan Rice to the "top player" – as he has been called by Klopp – and there is evidence that he will push for a starring role in the team over the coming years.

Unfortunately, he has been sidelined for the vast majority of the current campaign and has only made two appearances across cup competitions, also sitting four of the opening five Premier League matches on the bench, unused.

Liverpool are understood to be easing the player back, making no mistakes as they guide him back to fitness and allow his body to grow without hindering his development by throwing him into the deep end.

When he returns, though, there's no denying that a frisson of excitement will course throughout Anfield, and with the Spanish starlet joining Quansah in Liverpool's latest wave of talent, there is so much to look forward to for the club's ardent support.
