Do inexperienced Man City still have the mentality of champions?

Pep Guardiola once described Tottenham as 'the Harry Kane team', but amid Manchester City's ridiculous reliance on their own superstar striker this season, it has been suggested that his side could be renamed 'the Erling Haaland team'. But after Phil Foden pulled off a miraculous escape act against Leeds United on Saturday, a fairer description might be 'the Haaland AND Foden team'.

That does not reflect well on the rest of a City squad who seem to no longer have the air of invincibility that used to define them. One reading of Foden’s balletic, 91st-minute winner against Leeds that snatched victory after City threw away a two-goal lead in a mostly abject second-half display, was that Guardiola's side showed impressive mental resilience. Another, though, was that they almost threw away two points – if not three – with a complacent performance and had to rely on individual brilliance after a team capitulation.

City’s recent games suggest they are indeed vulnerable and that they are going to struggle to chase down Arsenal in the title race unless they kick a worrying recent habit of surrendering leads.

    'Really struggling'

Guardiola didn’t want to read too much into the result nearly 48 hours later when he spoke before Tuesday’s trip to Fulham, but he certainly wasn’t hailing it as a positive shift in their mentality.

"It depends on Phil putting the ball in the net," he said in a dreary manner suggesting he was still not happy with how his team managed the second half. "I don't know that one win can define the mentality of the team. I don't believe in these kind of things."

Foden gave a more lengthy assessment of what happened, outlining what City did right and wrong: "We were in full control. They changed it around in the second half, changed the system and we couldn't seem to get going. We really struggled, to be honest. It was a frustrating half but when we had a short break, the manager got us together to adapt to their formation and we started playing again."

The England midfielder, who has six goals and three assists in all competitions this season, also warned his City team-mates that they cannot afford to play like they did in the second half on many more occasions.

"We have to work on things and get things better because when the opponents get better in the later stages of the season, we can't afford to come out like this because we're going to lose the league," Foden added. "We have to put things right and get better and just work hard on the training pitch.”

    Consistenly losing leads

Saturday marked the sixth time this season where City have surrendered a lead. They conceded twice in the final half-hour at Brighton to turn a 1-0 lead into a 2-1 defeat before letting in a 90th-minute equaliser from Gabriel Martinelli against Arsenal to draw 1-1. They were subsequently dominant in their Champions League outing against Monaco but twice lost their advantage, letting in their second equaliser in the 90th minute, while they conceded an equaliser against Bournemouth, when Gianluigi Donnarumma vented his fury for contact in the area, before eventually securing victory.

They also had poor second halves against both Villarreal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe, even though the scorelines – 2-0 and 4-1, respectively – suggested that they won both games comfortably.

  • AFP

    No longer invincible

City's struggles to build on the momentum of a good start is becoming more pressing when they are no longer dominating every opponent, as evidenced by their defeats against Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle in which they conceded the first goal.

City went into the game against Leeds on the back of consecutive defeats to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen, and Foden admitted that harmed their confidence: "Obviously, from our own performance, it wasn't good enough from start to finish. But sometimes it's like that when you come off the back of two defeats. For whatever reason, it's so much more difficult to get the three points when you come off the back of defeats."

"But today wasn't about the way we played or how we performed," he continued. "It was just for us about getting the win because we just wanted to feel how we used to feel with the three points."

That felt like an admission that something in City’s mentality has changed in the last year or so.

    Replacing relentless winners

Guardiola's side no longer go into every game believing that they are going to win, nor do they seem capable of ensuring they are going to win even when they get off to a good start. Perhaps that should not be surprising given the turnover in the squad, with seven key members of the squad that won the treble in 2023 and secured a record-breaking fourth Premier League title a year later have since left.

This is not say that City were wrong to move on from those players, several of whom were no longer at their physical peak as they approached their mid-30s, such as Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Kyle Walker and Ederson. Julian Alvarez, meanwhile, asked to leave so as to play more, while Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji were struggling with their fitness and form before being loaned out.

The insatiable winning mentality of the departed players, above all De Bruyne and Gundogan, has, however, proven very difficult to replace.

Spurs have another Kane in the making but he's likely to leave like Parrott

Tottenham Hotspur have levels still to reach under Thomas Frank’s management, but with such an exciting academy underbelly, there’s every reason for fans to be excited about the club’s long-term success.

There has been a real wave of youth investment in recent years, with Lucas Bergvall and Luka Vuskovic among the formative additions landed after showing signs of prodigious potential. However, the next superstar has yet to present himself.

Harry Kane is the most notable alumnus kicking a ball today, with the Three Lions captain in devastating form for club and country this season. Kane is one of the Londoners’ greatest players of all time, for sure.

How Frank must long for the 32-year-old’s qualities. He would be the icing on the cake down N17 this season. However, Kane isn’t the only one-time Spurs striker making headway at the moment, with Troy Parrott in the form of his life.

Parrott's record since leaving Spurs

Parrott left Tottenham for AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie in July 2024, completing a transfer worth around £7m. He had only featured four times for Spurs’ senior side and had completed five separate loan spells away, the last of which was a prolific year in Holland with Excelsior.

However, his 2024/25 campaign stood as the opus of his young career. The 23-year-old has been thriving with Alkmaar, and he has used that platform as a springboard toward new heights with the Irish national team too.

Indeed, after scoring 13 goals and supplying two assists across 14 matches in all competitions for his club this season, Parrott has headed out with his nation and dragged them to the World Cup qualifiers, scoring a brace in last week’s surprise victory over Portugal.

But it was the sublime hat-trick over Hungary on Sunday evening that consolidated Parrott’s new reputation as a hero in his homeland and one of the most talented up-and-coming strikers out there.

How Spurs must regret letting him leave, especially considering the current conundrum Frank is dealing with at number nine. That said, they do have a potential replacement in the wings who could be seen as the club’s new version of Kane.

Spurs' new version of Harry Kane

Dane Scarlett may have envisaged a bigger role at this stage of his career, but the 21-year-old Tottenham talent is undoubtedly still in with a shot of making it at the club.

Having been praised by former coach Jose Mourinho in the past for being a “diamond” of a prospect, Scarlett found a way back into the reckoning after a series of loan spells last season, and in this, he could emulate Kane and take a step forward where Parrott was unable to.

Curiously, Kane completed a series of loan spells away from Tottenham before establishing himself as one of the finest strikers of his generation. He was 21 when it all came together in London.

Scarlett must not be written off, not yet. The “fantastic finisher”, as he has been called by Frank, scored his first goal for the club in the Europa League last season, and while Frank has not yet unleashed him in the Premier League, the 5 foot 11 striker has made the bench five times across the club’s past seven matches.

TNT Sports pundit Peter Crouch said after that win over Elfborg last season that Scarlett reminded him of Kane back in his younger days, having displayed such resilience to kick on after a series of loan spells and become one of Tottenham’s greatest players.

While Parrott might have seen the chance for such success pass him by, it’s certainly not too late for Scarlett, and given the current attacking issues at the club, one golden chance may bloom into a prosperous future down N17.

However, given his record at senior level to date, it would not be a huge surprise if things ended in the same way it did for Parrott; a move elsewhere.

Immediate concern for Dyche at Nottingham Forest after Marinakis decision

Nottingham Forest have appointed Sean Dyche as their new head coach on a deal until summer 2027.

The 54-year-old has taken over at the City Ground following Ange Postecoglou’s sacking on Saturday. Dyche, who lives in Nottingham and was a trainee at the club, becomes the third first-team boss of the season and will be joined in the dugout by former Forest heroes Ian Woan and Steve Stone.

Dyche had been out of work since leaving Everton at the start of the year. Forest say that the former Burnley manager has “the perfect blend of character, tactical acumen and proven achievement”.

Forest and Evangelos Marinakis were also considering former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini and are known admirers of Fulham’s Marco Silva, but the prospect of getting the Portuguese out of Craven Cottage mid-season was deemed too challenging.

The recruitment process, led by global head of football, Edu Gaspar, landed on Dyche and his first game in charge will be Thursday’s Europa League tie with Porto at the City Ground.

Dyche told Nottingham Forest January kitty

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Dyche has been told to work with what he has at Nottingham Forest and won’t be given a big January transfer kitty.

The reporter has claimed from ‘sources that Dyche is unlikely to get a big transfer budget in the January transfer window, and will instead have to work with the players already at the club’.

Forest and Marinakis splashed the cash in the summer, spending just under £200m ahead of their Europa League campaign, so it is understandable to hear of the decision by the owner.

RCB opt bowl with Hazlewood back; Omarzai for Jansen in PBKS

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) welcomed back captain Rajat Patidar to full fitness, and Josh Hazlewood back into the XI. Patidar came out for the toss after playing the last two matches as non-captain, won the toss immediately, and opted to bowl. RCB were also the away team in Qualifier 1. They won all their seven away games in the league stage. However, they were still without Tim David, who seemed to have injured his hamstring during their penultimate league match.Punjab Kings (PBKS) were still without Yuzvendra Chahal, and they also lost Marco Jansen to the South Africa Test side. Azmatullah Omarzai came in for him. New Chandigarh was PBKS’ home ground during the league stage, but they didn’t have a great record at home. They won two, lost two, and their captain Shreyas Iyer scored just 25 runs in those four matches. This was RCB’s first top-two finish since 2016. PBKS made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. FIFA ready to BAN league games staged overseas after Barcelona and AC Milan both agreed to jet-setting domestic fixtures in USA and Australia

FIFA is redrafting its regulations concerning domestic league games played in foreign countries and seeking legal advice on potentially banning them outright, after UEFA reluctantly approved LaLiga and Serie A matches to be played overseas. The games to be played are Villarreal v Barcelona in Miami and AC Milan v Como in Perth.

  • Overseas angst from governing bodies

Amid growing controversy over domestic league matches being played abroad, FIFA is working on a more robust rulebook for early next year. The effort follows UEFA's approval of games abroad, for which it blamed the loopholes in the existing, outdated regulations. FIFA was reportedly frustrated as the 2014 rules do not grant it the power to stop such games, provided all necessary parties approve. The original idea for exporting domestic games, the Premier League's "39th game" proposal back in 2008, was met with fan outrage and shelved.

    UEFA regret at overseas agreement

Despite announcing their agreement to the matches, UEFA were quick to reveal their regret, saying: "Given that the relevant FIFA regulatory framework – currently under review – is not clear and detailed enough, the UEFA executive committee has reluctantly taken the decision to approve, on an exceptional basis, the two requests referred to it."

And UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, made clear that the matches agreed will not become the thin end of the wedge for more matches to move abroad. Ceferin said: "League matches should be played on home soil; anything else would disenfranchise loyal match-going fans and potentially introduce distortive elements in competitions. Our consultation confirmed the breadth of these concerns. While it is regrettable to have to let these two games go ahead, this decision is exceptional and shall not be seen as setting a precedent. Our commitment is clear: to protect the integrity of national leagues and ensure that football remains anchored in its home environment."

  • Are the matches confirmed?

The final decision now rests with the host federations, the US Soccer Federation (for a proposed Villarreal vs Barcelona match in Miami's Hard Rock Stadium) and Football Australia, along with their respective confederations, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation. US Soccer's approval for the Miami game is uncertain due to concerns that hosting European and potentially Mexican league matches could commercially harm Major League Soccer. And there was a lawsuit brought by Relevent Sports against US Soccer and FIFA, following a denied request for Barcelona to play Girona in Miami the previous year.

    Premier League juggernaut rolls on

Commercial revenue from overseas markets is a growing income stream for top clubs. While playing league matches abroad is controversial, it can generate revenue and reach new audiences and  pre-season tours overseas also help clubs connect with international fans and generate revenue. International earnings are a significant factor, with the Premier League generating more from international broadcast rights than the combined total of La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, and Ligue 1. The Premier League's international broadcast rights notably exceeded domestic income for 2022-2025, generating £5.3 billion globally. The league is broadcast in 188 countries.

And Premier League CEO Richard Masters has indicated the model for watching the Premier League is set to change again soon. Speaking earlier this year, he said: "If you think where football was 10 years ago, it's a sort of version of where we are today. But I hope the PL will still be in it's current position globally. I think obviously, things are going to change. Maybe the broadcast market. But I hope that we retain and maintain some of the great things about English football. The history and traditions of the game, the way the whole thing fits together with its sort of soap opera chaos thrown on the side but it maintains its current shape. And I'm very confident, in 10 years time, that the English football industry will continue to be the envy of the world."

'Wasn't really making that much sense' – Jamie Carragher slams Mikel Arteta as he tears apart Arsenal manager's bizarre speech

Jamie Carragher has poked holes in Mikel Arteta's claims that his Arsenal side are not playing with the "handbrake" on. The Gunners rescued a point in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the weekend, a result that saw them slip five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Although Arteta has talked up his team's offensive capabilities, Carragher isn't buying what he's selling.

  • Arteta hits back at 'handbrake off' criticism

After Arsenal's stalemate with City at the weekend, pundit Gary Neville took aim at Arteta's tactics, which yielded just three shots on target from a dominant 67 per cent possession.

The ex-Manchester United defender said on his self-titled podcast: "Does [Arteta] know how to get the players over the line throughout the season? Did the players know how to get over the line? That's the doubt I've got about Arsenal, and it isn't going to go away until someone proves me wrong. I like watching them play, but they've got to take the handbrake off."

In response, Arsenal manager Arteta said, "How can you be so dominant against such a team if you have the handbrake on? Dominance and handbrake are two different words. Look at the players we have, starting with the most attacking 'keeper in the league by far. When I watched the game back and saw the stats, I was surprised. Because it was impossible for somebody to predict such dominance from Arsenal throughout 96 minutes. It never happened in 17 years of Pep Guardiola as a manager."

    Carragher lays into Arteta

Following the victory, Carragher said Arsenal "wasted" 45 minutes after not really laying a glove on City; plus, they had to rely on a stoppage-time equaliser from Gabriel Martinelli to get something from the game. Now, he is suggesting that Arteta's response doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

He said on the podcast: "[Arteta] started with the goalkeeper, saying 'we've got the most attacking goalkeeper in the league'. Then he mentioned something about his full-backs and I thought 'that's not right', because his full-backs are centre-backs. I played in a back four under Gerard Houllier; it was four centre-backs. That's not far away from what Arsenal have got.

"He then mentions [Martin] Zubimendi, okay, a creative player in the No. 6. He then talked about a wide player playing centre forward last season. He was almost trying to argue against it, but wasn't really making that much sense.

"I can understand him defending himself and not listening to the pundits but I thought I hope he's not doubling down on what he's said there to his coaching staff and players. Because what he was actually saying, I'm not quite sure stacked up in proving they are a really offensive team. The team is there in front of you."

  • Pressure on Arsenal to deliver Premier League title

Few would argue that Arteta has not improved Arsenal during six years in charge, but they have spent around £1 billion ($1.33bn) on players since they last won a trophy – an FA Cup in 2020. Some believe he is copying Jose Mourinho's pragmatic blueprint to grind out wins rather than taking it to the opposition. After a hat-trick of Premier League runner-up finishes, the Spaniard is under pressure to end thissilverware drought and win the English top-flight for the first time since 2004. But with Liverpool flying high in the league, Arsenal cannot afford too many more slip-ups.

Arsenal risk falling away in title race

Arsenal sit second in the Premier League, behind Arne Slot's defending champions, and next up, they are preparing to face a foe that has bested them more often than not on their own patch.

Newcastle United lie in wait on Sunday at St James' Park, a ground the Gunners have not had much joy at in recent years. In fact, the Magpies have won four on the bounce in all competitions at home when facing the north London team, something Arteta will want to put right this weekend.

After that, they host Olympiacos in their second game of the league phase in the Champions League on Wednesday, before entertaining London neighbours West Ham on October 4. If Arsenal fail to win these next two league games, Liverpool could be out of sight before too long.

Gujarat Giants look to overcome bowling woes to break Mumbai Indians jinx

Who’s playing

Gujarat Giants (GG) vs Mumbai Indians (MI)
Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara, February 18, 2025, 7.30pm IST

What to expect: GG look to break MI jinx

The last time MI and GG met, Harmanpreet Kaur cracked 95 off 48 balls as MI pulled off a heist and booked a playoffs spot last moment. That meant MI have a 4-0 record against GG so far.Related

  • Zing-bail glitch prompts WPL rule change: Wicket broken only when bail fully dislodged

  • Run-out calls in MI-DC game turn focus on rules around LED stumps

But unlike the previous two seasons, GG have started WPL 2025 on a much stronger note. While it took them five attempts to win their first game in 2024, their first victory this time came in their second match, when they beat UP Warriorz (UPW) comfortably. But ineffective death bowling continues to be a concern for GG. RCB took them for 79 runs off the last 4.3 overs, while UPW smashed 26 runs off the final eight deliveries of their innings. With the bat, GG’s captain Ashleigh Gardner will be looking for more support from the top order, as their top three tallied only 22 runs between them against UPW.Meanwhile, MI started this season with a close loss against Delhi Capitals after three contentious run-out decisions. MI stuttered their way to 164 after Nat-Sciver Brunt (80*) and Harmanpreet (42) had given them a blazing start. Four of MI’s remaining top-seven batters fell for single-figure scores, and MI will hope things change against GG.

Team news and likely XIs

GG have played the same XI in both matches so far after handing out four debuts in the opener against RCB. But Sayali Satghare’s six overs across those two games cost 64 runs, and she struck only once. D Hemalatha, on the other hand, managed scores of only 4 and 0. So GG will hope they are back in form before it gets too late. Can Deandra Dottin help GG get their first win against MI?•BCCI

Gujarat Giants (probable): 1 Beth Mooney (wk), 2 Laura Wolvaardt, 3 D Hemalatha, 4 Ashleigh Gardner (capt), 5 Harleen Deol, 6 Deandra Dottin, 7 Simran Shaikh, 8 Tanuja Kanwar, 9 Sayali Satghare, 10 Priya Mishra, 11 Kashvee GautamMI have played only a solitary game so far this season, and are unlikely to panic despite their batters under-performing. But they will want Saika Ishaque, their second-highest wicket-taker in the WPL, to put behind a disappointing outing against RCB, as she leaked 43 runs in three overs.Mumbai Indians (probable): 1 Hayley Matthews, 2 Yastika Bhatia (wk), 3 Nat Sciver-Brunt, 4 Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), 5 Amelia Kerr, 6 S Sajana, 7 Amanjot Kaur, 8 Sanskriti Gupta, 9 Jintimani Kalita, 10 Shabnim Ismail, 11 Saika Ishaque

Players to watch

Deandra Dottin made her WPL debut only this year, but has already left a mark. She walked out to bat in the 12th over in both matches, and struck at a rapid pace, scoring 25 off 13 while batting first against RCB, and then an unbeaten 33* off 18 in a tricky chase against UPW to ensure GG hunted down 144 with two overs to spare. GG will hope Dottin’s run continues, and helps them break their MI jinx.Harmanpreet Kaur had played a massive role the last time these two teams met•BCCI

Nat-Sciver Brunt may not have scored a lot in the recent Ashes but she showed her class in MI’s opening game. Batting at No.3, her 80 off 59 balls, which included 13 fours, formed the bedrock of MI’s total. That is nearly half of the 172 runs she managed in nine innings last WPL, and her form will be a relief for MI, whose batting otherwise mainly rests on Harmanpreet’s shoulders in the middle order.

Key stats

  • Four of the top six wicket-takers in the WPL are from MI: Hayley Matthews (25 wickets), Ishaque (24), Amelia Kerr (24) and Sciver-Brunt (21).
  • Only four players have achieved the double of scoring at least 300 runs and taking 20 wickets in the WPL. Three of them are from MI (Sciver-Brunt, Matthews and Kerr), and one from GG (Gardner).
