Kevin Sinclair the latest casualty as Mark Wood steps up pursuit of 100mph

Ben Stokes believes Wood could reach three-figure mark after Windies allrounder brutally bounced out of the series at Trent Bridge

Ben Stokes believes Mark Wood could join Shoaib Akthar and Shaun Tait as the only Test bowlers to register a delivery at 100mph.Wood was electric throughout the second Test at Trent Bridge, his first appearance of the summer, beginning with a four-over opening burst on day two. He clocked a top speed of 97.1mph in his third over – the fastest delivery of his Test career – with none of his deliveries in that opening spell registering below 90.But it was a brutal delivery on Sunday that drew the most attention – and winces – fracturing the left forearm ofKevin Sinclair, West Indies’ offspinning allrounder, and ruling him out of the third and final Test at Edgbaston. He will be replaced by Gudakesh Motie.Sinclair, the sixth man out as West Indies were skittled for 143 in Nottingham on Sunday, wore a sickening blow while attempting to fend off a 92mph bumper from Wood. The ball ballooned up into the cordon, where it was taken by Zak Crawley. Sinclair reviewed the dismissal before dropping to one knee and calling for the physio. DRS showed impact with the sweatband of his left glove, upholding the on-field decision, as England moved closer to an eventual 241-run win, and a 2-0 series lead.Related

Though he did not reach 97 again, Wood maintained high speeds throughout the match. After striking Alick Athanaze on the head at the end of day two, first-innings centurion Kavem Hodge – who had earlier been dropped at slip by Root off Wood’s bowling – jokingly begging for mercy, saying: “Hey, I have a wife and kids at home!”Sinclair was not so lucky, though he had been more than willing to engage Wood on the field. The pair exchanged a few words, and, at one point, Sinclair gestured to Wood that his pace was down after negotiating a previous short delivery with relative ease. He soon discovered the hard way that this was not the case.Mark Wood clocked a top speed of 97.1mph in the second Test•Gareth Copley/Getty Images

Stokes, a close friend of Wood’s for almost 20 years as they rose through the Durham academy, reckons three figures cannot be ruled out altogether but is more than satisfied with the heat his fast bowler has been serving up to date.”He seems to be getting closer and closer to that,” said Stokes. “But I’m happy with what he’s doing right now to be honest.”Being able to sustain that pace is quite phenomenal. Look at his average speeds every time he plays a Test match – it’s always above 90mph. That says a lot about his fitness. It’s all fine and well trying to bowl one spell above 90. But every spell he bowls for England, he’s clocking over 90mph, and that’s a great thing to have as a captain.”I don’t know if he’s actually too bothered about it. One day, everything might click, or the speed gun might be wrong. We probably wouldn’t hear the end of it. Who knows? He’s got it in the tank. He’s been close a couple of times. Maybe one day.”Despite displaying a remarkable consistency of speed and accuracy across 28 overs in the match, Wood only returned one wicket in each innings. It was the continuation of a peculiar theme for the 34-year-old who, unlike most English pace bowlers, boasts better figures overseas than at home.Of his 110 career dismissals, 59 have come away from home at an average of 28.23, compared to 51 at 35.21 in England. His 5 for 34 against Australia at Headingley last summer was his first five-wicket haul on these shores, with one each in West Indies (2019), South Africa (2020) and Australia (2022).Nevertheless, the England management know just how valuable Wood is, and demonstrated as much by handing him a three-year central contract last October. Stokes believes this could well be the home summer Wood blows a batting line-up apart.”Even in his second or third spells, you have to hold your hands up and celebrate what we have there. He’s got the heart of a lion. He runs in spell after spell, ball after ball.”Although he didn’t get the rewards he wanted last week, he knows he affects the game in more than just wickets. That showed last week. I think someone will pay this summer, either West Indies this game or Sri Lanka.””The whole game changes. When his name gets read out, the whole crowd is up, then when the speeds are on the big screen, everyone gets going. Woody is always looking up at the screen as well to see what he’s clocking. That’s part of his place in the team. He knows he’s in the team to not only bowl skilfully, but also fast.”

Silva loves him: Fulham ready to open talks to sign £162k-p/w midfielder

As part of an ambitious overhaul which has received the green light from those upstairs at Craven Cottage, Fulham are now reportedly ready to open talks to sign a Champions League midfielder this summer.

Fulham working on fresh Marco Silva deal

When Tottenham Hotspur sacked Ange Postecoglou, there may have been some nerves around West London regarding Marco Silva’s Fulham future. Those nerves have since been eased courtesy of Thomas Frank, however, who is reportedly set to swap Brentford for the Lilywhites. Now, the Cottagers are reportedly keen to agree a fresh deal with their manager.

Fulham manager Marco Silva.

As things stand, the former Everton manager has just one year remaining on his Fulham contract, which will leave those in West London with a major problem this time next year unless anything changes.

Whilst concerns continue to grow over his contract situation, Silva has remained as calm as ever. When asked about whether he had rejected a new deal or whether negotiations were even underway, the Fulham boss told reporters: “No, not at all. We didn’t even start. I know there are some rumours around that I refused something but from my side, it’s not true at all.

“Our connection is very, very strong and it’s clear there are so many things for the club to be careful about with players’ contract situations, there are many important decisions ahead with the summer coming up after a great season where we improved like all the other years before.

Fulham now enter race to sign "strong" Premier League-winning midfielder

He’s set to leave his current club.

ByTom Cunningham Jun 6, 2025

“We managed to reach some great numbers again, the best Premier League points tally in our history and if you want to improve, you have to focus on the most important things. I’m not saying the manager’s situation is not important but I’m under contract with the club, I just wanted to clarify that the conversations didn’t start and that’s not for professional reasons but it was just not the moment.”

Whilst the Portuguese manager remains in charge too, Fulham could be well positioned to seal a shock deal to welcome back an impressive midfielder this summer.

Fulham ready to make Palhinha move

According to GiveMeSport, Fulham are now ready to open talks to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich if the Bundesliga champions are willing to show their midfielder the door in the coming months. His arrival would be part of an ambitious plot to overhaul Silva’s side with as many as five fresh faces this summer.

The Portugal international is, of course, a name well-known around Craven Cottage given that he swapped West London for Bayern just one year ago. After making just six Bundesliga starts, however, the 29-year-old could be on his way back to the Premier League already.

Bayern Munich's JoaoPalhinhalooks dejected as he walks off after receiving a red card

Silva is certainly likely to welcome Palhinha back with open arms too, having praised the midfielder during his time at the club. The Fulham boss told reporters in Palhinha’s final season at the club: “His attitude, his commitment, the way he leads the others around are things that are hard to find in football.”

There’s no doubt that the midfielder’s return would suit all parties, but that’s not to say negotiations would be easy. Palhinha currently reportedly earns around £162,000-a-week at Bayern Munich, which is unlikely to be matched by Fulham.

Fewer touches than Kinsky: Ange must drop Spurs flop who lost 75% duels

Tottenham Hotspur’s dismal Premier League campaign continued on Sunday when they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace in front of their own supporters.

A double from England international Eberechi Eze, who scored either side of half-time, wrapped up the three points for the away side, who could have had even more.

Ange Postecoglou did, however, make a host of changes to his starting line-up, possibly to rest players ahead of the Europa League final later this month, but not many of those coming in advanced their claims for more minutes.

There were plenty of players who failed to step up and are now in danger of losing their place in the team, or of not getting another chance to impress in the coming weeks.

On the flip side, however, one player who has improved his chances of breaking into the starting line-up moving forward is goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, after his impressive display against the Eagles.

Why Antonin Kinsky has created a problem for next season

The Czechia youth international was brought into the side to give the number one, Guglielmo Vicario, a rest ahead of the Europa League final.

Signed from Sparta Prague in January, the shot-stopper already knows that he will not be in the team that faces Manchester United because he was not included in the squad for the Europa League for the knockout stages.

However, his performance against Crystal Palace showed that he has the quality to create a problem for Postecoglou next season, because he is good enough to challenge for the number one position in the Premier League.

Kinsky made eight saves and prevented 1.32 xG in the defeat to Palace, which shows that he prevented an absolute drubbing by the Eagles, and the youngster may feel like he did enough to at least make the manager think about him moving forward.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old star kept the scoreline down with a string of important saves, whilst also coming out to deal with balls in behind and crosses into the box, without making any errors.

Whereas, Vicario has made two errors that have led to shots and one error that has led to a goal in his last five appearances in all competitions, which shows that he has not been a reliable presence between the sticks of late.

This suggests that Kinsky has done enough to at least create doubt in Postecoglou’s mind for that position, as he could turn out to be a more reliable goalkeeper than the Italian heading into next season, which means that he could seriously challenge for the number one role.

On the flip side of that, Rodrigo Bentancur, who took even fewer touches (17) than Kinsky, was hooked at half-time in the defeat to Palace, and he should be ruthlessly ditched from the team by the Australian head coach.

Why Rodrigo Bentancur should be dropped

The former Juventus star was named in the starting XI after being left as an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw with West Ham United in the last Premier League game, although he did feature from the start away at Bodo/Glimt.

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Bentancur, however, failed to strengthen his case for a starting berth against Manchester United in the Europa League final as he put in a dismal first-half display that might put some doubt in the manager’s mind when it comes to selecting that vital line-up.

As you can see in the table above, the Uruguay international lost 75% of his duels and only completed 71% of his passes, which shows that he was loose in his use of the ball and struggled to keep up with the pace and physicality of the game out of possession.

Postecoglou opted to withdraw him from the match at the break, replaced by Yves Bissouma, and it is hard to argue with that decision when you look at what Bentancur did, or did not, offer in the opening 45.

The former Serie A star should, now, be ruthlessly ditched by Postecoglou for the trip to Aston Villa next time out in the Premier League, which will be the last match before the Europa League final.

That would then provide Bissouma with an opportunity to prove to the manager that he deserves to be in the starting XI for the final ahead of Bentancur.

The Mali international completed 87% of his passes and won three of his seven duels in the second half against Palace, which shows that he offered more in and out of possession than his teammate did in the opening 45.

Bissouma has greater athleticism in comparison to Bentancur and has the mobility to cover more ground and win more duels in the final against United, which is why Postecoglou should be concerned by the Uruguayan losing 75% of his duels against Palace.

As you can see in the clip against Brentford above, the former Brighton ace can start attacks with his ability to make recovery runs to win possession back for his side.

As shown in the statistics above, Bissouma is better than Bentancur when it comes to being dominant in duels on the deck, as the ex-Juventus man has lost the majority of his ground duels in the Premier League.

It has also been an issue in the Europa League because Bentancur has been dribbled past 1.3 times per game on average, compared to Bissouma’s 0.3 times per match. This suggests that opposition midfielders find it harder to get by the Mali international, due to his strength in duels.

Rangers likely to sell £16k-a-week ace as billionaire-owned club eye deal

Rangers are reportedly likely to sell an “excellent” midfielder permanently at the end of the season, as a billionaire-owned club eye a summer move for him.

Rangers still searching for solution in the dugout

The Gers are still looking to nail their next manager ahead of next season, with Barry Ferguson in interim charge until the end of the current campaign. Former Borussia Dortmund boss Marco Rose is a name who has been mentioned as a possible option, with the 48-year-old most recently in charge of RB Leipzig until earlier this year. He is a two-time Austrian league champion, as well as winning one German Cup and German Super Cup apiece.

RB Leipzig coachMarcoRosebefore the match

Steven Gerrard has been seen as a front-runner for the Rangers job this summer, assuming Ferguson isn’t retained, having guided the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title back in 2020/21. He knows the club well, which could be a bonus, and he may feel he has unfinished business there.

In terms of potential signings this summer, young Hearts striker James Wilson has been linked with a summer switch to Ibrox, with the 18-year-old a player with a bright future in the game. Now, a Rangers exit update has emerged, with one player’s time at the club possibly nearing its conclusion.

"Excellent" Rangers player likely to leave for good this summer

According to a new update from The Daily Record, Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell is likely to leave the club once and for all this summer, with Birmingham City keen on signing him on a permanent basis. The 27-year-old is currently on loan at the League One side, who are owned by billionaire Tom Wagner, helping them cruise to the title this season, and it now looks like his stay there could be a long-term one.

Kieran Dowell

This does feel like the right time for Rangers to sell the £16,000-a-week Dowell, considering he was loaned out to Birmingham because he wasn’t considered a key part of the club’s plans. The Englishman is out of contract at Ibrox at the end of next season, meaning this summer is the last chance to get a good fee for him, rather than losing him on a free transfer in 2026.

Dowell has done well at Birmingham, scoring five goals and registering four assists in League One this season, and Blues manager Chris Davies has heaped praise on him.

“You can see that from the outside but what you don’t see is what the character is like. Does he work hard? Does he take information on? Whether he is a team player. You only get to see that when you work with someone and he is all that – he works for the team, runs, covers a lot of distance, very diligent. I have given him four, five defensive jobs – everyone he has been switched on to. For me, that is excellent because these are the type of players I want in the team.”

Rangers can revive Tavernier by hiring manager who's "a level above Gerrard"

As the 49ers continue their search to find a new Rangers manager, they should hire “one of the most promising coaches in world football”.

ByBen Gray May 2, 2025

A move to Birmingham feels like the perfect outcome for the League One side, Rangers and Dowell himself, and it will hopefully be sorted by the time next season gets underway.

New heroes emerge with Australia's one hand firmly on the Ashes

No Cummins, no Lyon, no Khawaja, no problem say Australia as Neser and Co rip through England

Andrew McGlashan07-Dec-2025

Australia are no strangers to being 2-0 up in a home Ashes series. It has been that way on the last three occasions. When a particularly animated Steven Smith pulled Gus Atkinson for a mighty six at the end of a feisty few minutes, they were at the 2-0 mark again. But this one has been a little different.Amid the celebrations for Smith’s unbelievable catch to remove Will Jacks, which broke England’s belated resistance on the fourth day, there was a reminder of some of what Australia were missing in this match. The drinks carriers had 871 Test wickets between them: the somewhat overqualified pair of Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon.To that, you can add the 295 of Josh Hazlewood, who faces a race to feature at all in this series. Then there’s the fact that an entirely new opening pair has been formed by accident due to the injury suffered by Usman Khawaja. Form debates for Khawaja aside, it required another divergence from Plan A.Related

From the moment Cummins was ruled out of the opening stages of the series, Australia have had to be adaptable. When Hazlewood went down as well (along with Sean Abbott), it really tested their pace-bowling depth. Then they turned up at the Gabba, thought long and hard for three days, and at the last moment, gave Lyon a tap on the shoulder that left him “absolutely filthy”.Midway through the fourth day, the man who replaced him, Michael Neser, was being cheered off his home ground by fans and team-mates. He had first opened the door the previous night with a brace of return catches, then ended their belated resistance to finish with 5 for 42.”It was tight,” Smith said of the selection call. “We could have gone a few different ways and it’s certainly nothing against Nathan. He’s a freak. We just thought, if we can get our sessions right in the way we play, and obviously the extra batting and the tail – the way they batted for 50 overs enabled us to do that. Those 35 overs we had last night really turned the game [with] those six wickets we took. It was [about] trying to line our sessions up as much as possible.”I think Michael offers something different. We can bring the ‘keeper up, we can bowl stump for stump, keep things tight and make you take risks when the ball’s probably not quite as quick or a little bit skiddy. We were happy with that. It’s nothing against Nathan, that’s for sure. He’s an unbelievable bowler and he’s done it for so long.”Brendan Doggett celebrates as Gus Atkinson falls into his trap•Cameron Spencer/Getty ImagesAustralia’s top score in a total of 511 came from their No. 9, with Mitchell Starc making 77 after he’d carried the bowling attack on the first day. It’s not to say Starc wouldn’t have dominated the way he has if Australia’s attack had been at full strength, but in the first two matches of this series, he has played one of the great leading roles when Smith needed it most.”Super proud,” Smith said. “I think everyone played their role throughout. Different roles, obviously Nes [Neser] up to the stumps, [Scott] Boland a little bit up to the stumps and changing things. Starcy did what he’s done forever. Doggett, I thought, bowled some nice spells and obviously created something different with some short stuff as well. It was quite a nice little balance we had there.”And I thought Greeny [Cameron Green] bowled really nicely today as well. He could have had Stokes out on a couple of occasions there; he was looking quite likely. I thought they all did their jobs together. It was pretty humid and hot out there. They kept coming back and did everything I asked of them. That’s what this team’s been doing for some time.”

“We play live, we adapt on the go instead of getting back in the sheds and going, we should have done this, we should have done this. We identify what we need to do at that present moment and adapt. We’ve done that well for a long period of time”Steven Smith

Australia’s fielding also played a vital role throughout. Alongside one of the finest displays of wicketkeeping by Alex Carey and Smith’s stunning grab, Josh Inglis produced a direct hit run out to remove Ben Stokes on the opening day and Marnus Labuschagne claimed a brilliant outfield catch to end England’s first innings. There have been times of late where Australia’s outfielding has not been the best; this game was exemplary. They have won by vast margins of ten wickets and eight wickets against an England side billed as being their greatest challenge on these shores since 2010-11. Elsewhere on these pages, it will be dissected how poor England have been. But while Australia have been handed some gifts, they have also seized the moment.”It was a huge win, obviously great to go 2-0 up,” Smith said. “It’s been a wonderful couple of weeks for the team. I think we’ve played some sensational cricket. We’ve identified moments in the game and made the most of them.”We play live, we adapt on the go instead of getting back in the sheds and going, we should have done this, we should have done this. We identify what we need to do at that present moment and adapt. We’ve done that well for a long period of time.”There was no better example of that than the way the lower-order batting on the third day, with the stand between Starc and Scott Boland enabling Australia to have the ideal bowling conditions. England had a glimpse of what could have been when Atkinson and Jofra Archer briefly got the ball to zip through during the small chase under lights. But by then the game was long gone and, with it, Australia had one hand firmly on the Ashes again.

How disciplined India attacked England's defence

For a while, Bazball was on show, and then the spinners came in, and then Jaiswal took it up a notch

Alagappan Muthu25-Jan-2024At the stroke of 30 minutes at the crease, Yashasvi Jaiswal jogged across for a single. He wouldn’t have known it in that moment but he had just become personally responsible for two of the four fastest fifties India have ever recorded as a team in Test cricket.A wave of applause swept the ground, made slightly eerie by how some of it seemed to be coming out of loudspeakers at the ground. England surprised by attacking intent of India openers – Duckett

Jaiswal struck the first ball of the innings for four and the first ball of spin for six. Ben Stokes had taken a gamble by having a debutant open the bowling. It backfired to the extent that in the UK, Simon Kerrigan, who was thrown into an Ashes Test match only to be mauled for 6.62 an over and never seen in Test cricket ever again, began trending.Tom Hartley’s day (9-0-63-0) made it clear that spinners aren’t guaranteed success even if conditions are in their favour. They have to put it in the right spot.India, themselves, needed a little time to come to terms with that.

The forward defensive in a cricket match is like the blue in the sky. It’s everywhere.England have recently been doing something to make it rare and for a little while they were having success here too.R Ashwin was bowling to a fresh-to-the-crease, battling-with-something-in-his-eye Jonny Bairstow with three men on the leg side boundary.Rohit Sharma was asking his best fielder Ravindra Jadeja to go as far back at point as he has ever gone in the first session of a Test match. The run-rate was hovering around five after the first 10 overs.Jonny Bairstow is bowled by Axar Patel•BCCIBazball had pushed India back.So India made Bazball come forward. And defend. Because the forward defensive on a spinning pitch is like a freshman at a college party. It can be a bit awkward.Ben Duckett played for spin and got lbw. Jonny Bairstow played for the straight ball and got bowled. Both times India dragged the batters onto the front foot but prevented them any other luxury. They couldn’t get to the pitch to smother the turn. They didn’t have room to free the arms. The stumps were in play so they couldn’t hit across the line without taking a risk. They also didn’t stray on the pads so the flick for single wasn’t on. And of course, no one could quite tell which way it was going to turn.None of this had anything to do with the pitch. It was just discipline taken to a whole other level.Ashwin and Axar Patel, in particular, were able to hold this in-between length for long enough that it triggered two England collapses, 3 for 5 and 3 for 16.

****

Hartley, Jack Leach and Rehan Ahmed all turn the ball into the left-hander. And only one of them has Test match experience of any consequence. So when they tried to bowl full and bring India forward, they went too full, and India could come forward with glorious abandon.Jaiswal seems to pick up an opportunity to attack quicker than most others. It was almost predatory the way he went after a spin bowling attack that was one part solid and two parts hope. Almost similar deliveries were being dispatched with a slog sweep over midwicket and with inside-out drives through cover. And as if that wasn’t enough, he began charging at them too.England might just be able to match India’s batting in this series but the difference in the quality of the bowling was stark. Hartley really had no one to lean on like Axar did when he come on to bowl.”[Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja] come and tell me, this is what is happening from this part of the wicket, and that becomes a plus point and I am aware of what I need to do,” Axar said. “We keep having these conversations during matches. I have a lot of fun bowling with them. They’ve been playing for so many years, so it’s a plus point.”It almost felt unfair.

Who has the most Test wickets without dismissing the same man twice?

Steven Lynch29-Mar-2022Kraigg Brathwaite now has 25 Test wickets, with each one being a different batter. Who has the most Test wickets without dismissing the same man twice? asked Lachlan McBeath from Australia

That’s a nice easy one, as those 25 different wickets by Kraigg Brathwaite is the Test record. Next comes Mohammad Ashraful, whose 21 wickets for Bangladesh were all different people. The Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Sajeewa de Silva follows him with 16, one more than the Surrey and England pair of Gareth Batty and Mark Butcher. In all international cricket, Ashraful took 47 wickets, again without ever dismissing the same batter twice. He’s well clear of a trio on 28 – Dillon Heyliger of Canada, Oman’s Fayyaz Butt, and Mark Jonkman of the Netherlands. When was the first-ever first-class match? asked Simon Duke from England

The match that the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians considers to be the inaugural first-class fixture was played 250 years ago this year: on Broadhalfpenny Down in Hambledon, Hampshire beat “England” by 53 runs in a two-day game that started on June 24, 1772. John Small, one of the game’s first notable batters, made 78 for Hampshire; the might of England managed only one run more between them in their second innings. Three years later, also at Hambledon, Small made what is now recognised as the maiden first-class century – 138 for Hampshire against Surrey. Both captains scored 150s in the Bridgetown Test – how rare is this? asked Ahson Atif from India

That double by Joe Root (153) and Kraigg Brathwaite (160) in the second Test in Bridgetown was the eighth time both captains had made a score of 150 or more in the same Test. The first such double was at Old Trafford in 1964, when Bob Simpson amassed 311 for Australia and Ted Dexter responded with 174 for England. The most recent instance before last week came in Abu Dhabi in March 2021, when Asghar Afghan made 164 for Afghanistan and Sean Williams 151 not out for Zimbabwe.Kumar Kushagra is the sixth youngest batter to score a first-class double-hundred•PTI Has there been an ODI innings in which all 11 players made it into double figures? asked Mahesh Siddique from India

Unlike in Tests (15 instances so far), there hasn’t yet been a one-day international innings in which everyone reached double figures. There are four cases of ten getting there. When West Indies made 246 against Australia in Bridgetown in 1990-91, everyone reached double figures except last man Courtney Walsh, who was out for 4. Pakistan’s 259 for 9 against West Indies in Dhaka in 1998-99 included ten double-figure scores, plus 4 from Shahid Afridi, who opened. When Zimbabwe scored 262 against India in Rajkot in 2000-01, last man Brian Murphy was out for 1. And Robin Uthappa also made 1 as India totalled 275 against Pakistan in Jaipur in 2007-08.There have also been two innings in men’s ODIs that included no double-figure scores at all. When Zimbabwe slipped to 35 all out against Sri Lanka in Harare in April 2004, the highest score was 7, by Dion Ebrahim and Mr Extras. (That was a record low for ODIs at the time, since equalled by the USA against Nepal in Kirtipur in February 2020; Xavier Marshall made 16 of those.) And when Canada slumped to 36 all out – the lowest World Cup total – against Sri Lanka in Paarl in 2003, the highest contributions were a pair of 9s, by opener Desmond Chumney and skipper Joe Harris.A couple more thoughts about that Ranji Trophy runfest between Jharkhand and Nagaland, that was mentioned in last week’s column. Kumar Kushagra, who is only 17, scored 266. And Sushant Mishra bagged a pair despite his team amassing more than a thousand runs. Were either of these records? asked Shreyal Bose and Divyanand Valsan from India

Both of these things were records, depending on how you define them. At 17, Kumar Kushagra was the sixth youngest to score a first-class double-century – Hasan Raza, whose age is disputed, was reportedly only 15 when he scored 204 not out for Karachi Whites against Bahawalpur in Karachi in 1997-98. The others were Ijaz Ahmed (16 in 1984-85), and 17-year-olds Reetinder Sodhi (1997-98), Ambati Rayudu (2002-03) and Johann Myburgh (1997-98). But none of those younger than Kushagra made it to 250, so he is the youngest to reach that particular milestone. The unfortunate Sushant Mishra collected a four-ball pair in the match in Kolkata, despite his side piling up 1297 runs in all. The only other man to bag a pair of ducks in a match in which his side scored more than 1000 runs did it in a Test: the Pakistan legspinner Danish Kaneria, while his side amassed 1078 runs against India in Faisalabad in 2005-06.Shiva Jayaraman of ESPNcricinfo’s stats team helped with some of the above answers.Use our feedback form, or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

New De Bruyne: Chelsea lead race for £25m star with “world-class potential”

Chelsea are suffering their typical wintry blues at the moment, having gone four games without a win since thrashing Barcelona in the Champions League.

There’s no question that Enzo Maresca has stabilised and advanced the BlueCo project at Stamford Bridge, but, with words from the horse’s mouth, “there are many, many things that I need to learn.”

A key theme this season has been the injury suffering of Cole Palmer, who has not scored in the Premier League since September.

Chelsea need a foil, and they are lining up the perfect up-and-coming talent to contest with the Three Lions star for a starting berth.

Chelsea lining up Palmer replacement

After Chelsea let Kevin De Bruyne go way back, the Belgian became one of the greatest players of his generation. In Palmer, they have landed a playmaker who could replace the former Manchester City man as the division’s staple.

However, the 23-year-old’s absence this term has been keenly felt, and Maresca and the Blues’ sporting directors recognise the need for an alternative option.

They have earmarked such a profile in AZ Alkmaar’s fast-rising star Kees Smit, with inews’ Mark Douglas suggesting that Chelsea are leading the race for the 19-year-old.

Liverpool and Newcastle have also been named as suitors, with the latter considering a January bid, but Chelsea are considered the favourites to land his signature, with a figure of £25m mooted.

Why Chelsea want Kees Smit

Smit may be at the start of his career, but already he has established himself as a talent with the capacity to thrive at one of Europe’s most prestigious outfits.

And given Chelsea’s talent ID when it comes to plucking out elite-level prospects, it could be a match made in heaven, also serving symbolically as rectification after that fumbled De Bruyne chapter.

Smit’s creativity and ability to play in deep-lying and advanced midfield berths have actually seen him likened to the 34-year-old, who left Man City and joined Napoli last summer.

Looking at the AZ starlet’s dynamism and high baseline when it comes to his playmaking, it’s not hard to see why that is.

Already, he is establishing himself against his peers, outstripping them. FBref data shows that the Dutchman ranks among the top 9% of Eredivisie midfielders this season for pass completion, the top 13% for shot-creating actions and the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90.

Smit will only get better. Analyst Ben Mattinson has already scouted out his “world-class potential”, and his growth over the past two years in his homeland has done little – if anything – to suggest the contrary.

The teenager’s strength and intelligence and technical skill all work in alliance, and he has already shown he has what it takes to stand out against Premier League opposition, shining against Crystal Palace in the Conference League this year.

Would Chelsea be wise to wait and see how this up-and-comer continues to develop? Perhaps, but with a host of suitors lining up, time is not on the west Londoners’ side; if they want to snap him up, they must do so in January, beating off the likes of Newcastle and landing a player who could become a leading member of Maresca’s project down the line.

Maresca was quizzed on Chelsea’s reliance on Palmer’s output last season, when the England superstar was going through fitness problems.

He relayed to reporters that the Stamford Bridge side needed to break away from that one-man team identity. They are doing so, and with Smit, that would only develop further.

Delap upgrade: Chelsea already have one of the "best strikers in Europe"

Sesko upgrade: Man Utd chase £44m move for "one of the best STs in Europe"

INEOS splashed the cash in the summer transfer window to provide Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim with more quality at both ends of the pitch.

Senne Lammens was brought in from Royal Antwerp, to replace Andre Onana, and has prevented 1.51 xG across five appearances in the Premier League so far this season, per Sofascore.

£62.5m was also spent on the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brazil international scored his first goal for the club last month in the 4-2 win against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bryan Mbeumo has arguably been the most successful addition to the squad. Since his £71m move from Brentford, the left-footed star has scored five goals and provided one assist in 11 Premier League games for the Red Devils.

Whilst Cunha and Mbeumo both arrived from other English clubs as known quantities, the club were also willing to splash the cash on more of a gamble, with Benjamin Sesko.

The Red Devils spent £66.4m to sign the Slovenia international from RB Leipzig in the summer to replace Rasmus Hojlund, and he has had a mixed start to life at Old Trafford.

Why Man Utd need to sign another centre-forward

Sesko has scored two goals in 11 appearances in the Premier League since his big-money move from Germany, and both of those goals came in his first seven outings.

The 22-year-old marksman scored his first goal for the club against Brentford in September, before netting his second goal against Sunderland in a 2-0 win at Old Trafford.

Sesko scored 13 goals in 33 matches in the Bundesliga in the 2024/25 campaign for Leipzig, per Sofascore, so it was always going to be a tough ask for the striker to hit the ground running as a goal machine in the Premier League.

The Slovenian forward, as shown in the graphic above, has missed more ‘big chances’ than he has managed goals scored, which suggests that he needs to improve his efficiency in front of goal if he wants to be the main number nine for Amorim.

As you can see in the table above, Sesko struggled in his last two appearances for United before the international break, losing the majority of his physical duels without offering any significant threat in the final third.

The former Leipzig star’s mixed start to his career at Old Trafford may explain why the club are reportedly looking to add another player in his position in the winter market.

Man Utd chasing deal for another Bundesliga striker

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United are one of a number of clubs chasing a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-forward Serhou

Guirassy.

The report claims that he has a release clause in his contract with the German side that will allow him to be sold for a fee of roughly £44m to a ‘select group of elite clubs’ in the January transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It adds that Arsenal, Manchester United, and PSG are all in the race to sign the Guinea international, but it remains unclear if any of those three teams fall into the group of clubs that can activate that release clause.

CaughtOffside reports that the Red Devils are ones to watch in the race to land the Bundesliga centre-forward because Amorim wants more experienced options in his frontline.

Sesko, 22, is still in the early stages of his development and Guirassy could be viewed as an experienced number nine who could offer a huge upgrade in the immediate term.

Why Man Utd should sign Serhou Guirassy

At the age of 29, the Dortmund centre-forward would arrive at Old Trafford as the experienced striker that Amorim wants to bolster his squad with, as he would be ready to come in and make an instant impact.

It can sometimes be the case with young players that they have the technical qualities and potential to be an incredible player in the future, but they do not have a tight grasp of the nuances that come with delivering consistently at the top level.

Guirassy, being 29 and having been around the block, has tightened up his game and is focused on output, scoring and assisting goals, which is reflected in his statistics compared to Sesko’s over the past 365 days.

His statistics when it comes to scoring goals and creating goals are far more impressive than the young Slovenian’s, which is understandable given the difference in experience between the two players.

The Dortmund striker was even described by German legend Lothar Matthaus as “one of the best strikers in Europe” back in March, which speaks to how much he has impressed in German football.

As you can see in the table above, the United transfer target scored eight more goals than Sesko in the Bundesliga during the 2024/25 campaign, despite playing three fewer matches.

The experienced centre-forward has also scored seven goals in 15 appearances in all competitions during the current season, per Sofascore, whilst the Red Devils marksman has only scored twice since his move from Leipzig.

Therefore, United could immediately improve their starting line-up by bringing the Dortmund striker in to be a huge upgrade on Sesko, given that their respective performances over the past 18 months suggest that he would offer significantly more as a goalscorer.

This is why INEOS should push to beat Arsenal and PSG to the signing of the Bundesliga star to add more goals to the team for the second half of the season, whilst also providing Sesko with an experienced mentor to help him improve in the long term.
